Black Bar Screen Error - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
So, I have had my M8 since around May and it's been perfectly fine up until July/August when I have two problems;
1. The first is that occasionally a black bar pops up on the phone and says hold the volume up and power button for 10 seconds to restart. I don't know why this keeps happening.
2. Secondly, when I'm using apps like Whatsapp and swyping on the keyboard, it'll just stop typing/go into the contacts profile/do other things with the phone when all I want to do is type.
Any ideas as to why? I asked HTC Support and they just said to clear the cache. I did that but to no avail.
Thanks,
Crazysah

using stock rom ? you can always try factory reset

Yes, am using stock. Always have been. Tried a soft reset and ever a hard reset.

It's this sort of thing: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/howto/465048.html - but it comes up occasionally and automatically in my case.

Nobody knows why this happens?

I was going to say maybe its a malfunction of the power button. But actually, if you hold the power button, the Phone Options (Power off, Airplane mode, Restart) dialogue appears first, and the Reset countdown appears a few seconds after that.
If this isn't happening for you, I suspect a software error or some sort.

Take no offence please, but 150 posts, and you don't know what a recovery is? Are you rooted? Do you have TWRP or CWM installed?

No, I know what recovery is, but how would that help exactly. I mean, I've already done factory reset, cleared cache, done all that customer support has told me to do besides give the phone in for repairs.

Sorry, my answer was a direct response to @PoweredTek 's reply
I really don't know the exact nature of your issue.
The black bar where and when?
Maybe a screen shot would help.
I would truly like to help you solve your problem.
Now that I realize the user who`s comments I was responding to (lol), please disregard my earlier reply.
I'm sure we can find a solution for you.

Like you know when you change the volume on your phone a black bar pops up? A bar like that pops up and says the phone will restart in ten seconds and then I just press the volume up button and it dissapears.
Like when you press the volume up + power button together, the bar that pops up? That comes automatically and often. I have no idea why.

I have no idea. It's very strange. Have you tried installing a different ROM?
Also, are you running a custom kernel perhaps?

Soft reset in htc desire

Hello, someone can tell me how to do a soft reset to htc desire, there is some key combination or there is some software to do it?.
Thanks
keep the power button pressed for a longer time. a menu will be shown. select power down (phone will now shut down), press power button again. et voila! you have 'rebooted' your phone!
thank you very much but I do not work or do not

Uuhh.. What?
So is it at all possible to have an app that reboots the handset essentially?
There was an app on the market called quick boot I think, never used it myself but you could try that, although it may need root and the desire will probably be too new to work with it, so maybe one to keep an eye on.
Sorry for such a noob question, but the reply above, is that not simply turning the device.off and on again as opposed to rebooting, or carrying out a soft reset? Coming from an iPhone and wm before that, i was led to believe there was a difference. Removing the battery with the device on was a soft reset, rebooting the iPhone was also slightly different from turning it off and on again. ?
I would also like to know if we could do a soft reset without having to take back cover off and remove battery?
Thanks
I have to take back cover of my Desire to reset it. Turning off doesn't work in my case. Simply - last time I was waiting 15 minutes and it still displaying 'shutting down'. I can't shutdown my phone.

I think you didn't catch what we are talkin about. Soft reset doesn't meen we would like to erase all data and revert back to factory settings.
My phone is not able to shut down even after one hour after pressing: power botton for a moment -> power off. Any clues?

Strange indeed soft reset works here fine but used it only a few times
Maybe a hard reset forces to reinstall the o/s correct and solves you're problem because it should work via the power button...
Do you get the pop-up menu with the different choices?

what the hell are you people talking about?
a soft reset is a way to restart the phone using an option in the phone, perhaps an app
so when there's the option to POWER OFF the phone, there is the option to RESTART the phone

Sorry, I think I got it wrong. D-fens - what you have done is fine, taking out the battery, judging by htc website
htc.com/europe/howto.aspx?id=721&type=1&p_id=312
but I don't know why wouldn't it shut down with power button, it works fine with my.
I think I know what your trying to get at, the problem is in your phone, unmount your SD card, I suspect its faulty. This will I suspect work. Try it and tell us how you get on. I'm assuming switching the phone off and on again is the same as rebooting or soft reset on Android.
Lol mega fail answers. I think currently there is no way to soft reset your phone without going the long way of turning it off and turning it on again. Quite annoying I know, but you should not have to soft reset your phone much at all, if you do then there is a prob with software etc. I have only soft reset my phone maybe 2-3 times in the few weeks I have had it for.
But again I believe the question is:
Is there an app or some special way to soft reset the desire, without removing battery or without pressing and holding power button and selecting turn off, as both these methods simply turn the device off and are not actually resetting the device...
Use quickboot or root boot. I personally use root boot. Works fine.

Well I've been in a situation where an app has crashed and no buttons worked including power. I had to remove battery but I'm sure this would have worked. You may need it one day. So be grateful.
Unfortunately, this completely skips the "silent boot" app on relaunch.
Great tip

this is NOT a factory reset? just a reboot? is that correct? could the users having the "phone won't shut down" issue just use this instead to reboot cleanly?

It's not a factory reset or hard reset. The key combination just does a soft reset. Give it a try; it won't hurt.

when i first got my hands on the desire after installing and deinstalling apps I got the error about a lack of space available when trying to install apps even though i only had 3/4 apps installed, so i got rid of the task manager and now i just reboot the phone after installing or deinstalling apps or if i have been on youtube or doing a lot of browsing, it seem to keep the phone running smoothly and havn't seen the out of memory error
ive not looked in to this so it is just a presumption, the phone runs a clean up on shut down and this is the reason why the phone seems to hang when shutting down as it is deleting unused files, I noticed that when you shutdown (power off the phone) after heavy use it would always take a lot longer shut down the first time, if you then done a power down for a second time shut down was quite quick.
or maybe im talking s********
ive tried the key combo and it seems like a forced reset rather than a reboot? anyone care to comment?

I know what you're talking about. That's what I thought too (ie, the phone does a clean-up at shutdown). But then why doesn't this happen on the HTC Legend? I have both devices and the Legend has no issues shutting down regardless of up-time.
Anyway, I've noticed that rebooting the phone will often recover chunks of internal memory. Presumably it's just freeing some from some sort of cache. I've not noticed whether it behaves the same if I reset via the key combination versus shutdown-and-then-power on.
Thanks for the tip!
I'm glad I found this out, When my phone gets to baggy to access a app killer or even to get the power off menu I use this, So much faster than removing silicon case then back then battery and then having to stick it all back together

Random power off - requires hard reset

This is a new phone and it's happened 1/2 a dozen times or more. With good battery life remaining, I'll check the phone to find it powered off (black screen). The power button will not turn it on. I need to remove the battery for a few seconds, reinstall the battery, then it boots fine. Been on ICS FI27 since I got the phone. I'm now rooted with the stock ROM, but this issue was happening prior to the root too. Any suggestions? I'm considering calling Samsung, perhaps I got a buggy phone? Thanks.
Re: Random power off - requires soft reset
Check the battery, take the battery out and spin it, if it spins you may need a new battery.
Also the power button is known to be non functional sometimes due to a number of reasons including software and hardware.
If you just got it try and exchange it. Good lock

Thanks for the tips. I really don't think it's the battery. I have another EP4GT that I use for work and I've swapped batteries. Had the same problem with either battery and never had the problem on the work phone at all. It happened again today. Really frustrating since it could happen in a emergency. I'll prolly holler at Samsung later this week if I get the time.
Found a thread on the Sprint Community Forums that discusses several variations of the reset issue quite extensively. I have a feeling it could be caused by my MicroSD card. I've formatted my MicroSD and will report back with my findings. Sorry I can't post links yet, but you can Google "samsung epic 4g randomly powers off"

Just a semantic clarification here. You are describing a hard-reset, not a soft-reset. A soft reset uses the power button (which uses the OS, i.e. "software") to reset, whereas a hard reset means forcing the phone to power off (by hardware manipulation - i.e. pulling the battery).
Hi Matt, thanks for the clarification. If I could go back and edit my title I would.
Since I've formatted the MicroSD I haven't had any more power off issues. I'll report back if I do. Thanks.

Thanks garwynn for the instructions - I did just that!
On another note, I had another lock up today, but this time different or at least something I have not noticed before. I got a message notification tone from the eBay app. I went to check it and the screen would not come on when pressing the power button, however the red LED was still blinking. I've never had the red LED in the past, just a black screen with no response. I had to remove the battery and reboot. Maybe just a fluke with the app this time? I read through some reviews of the eBay app and didn't really find anyone mention issues with the notifications. Oh well, I'll keep an eye on it and report anything else. Thanks.

I was able to pull logs using the terminal app on my AOSP build. The steps are just:
Code:
su
logcat
su for root permissions, and logcat to get the log.
You might have to find a terminal emulator to be able to do that though. I don't recall the TW ROMs having one installed by default.

Zenfone 2 Top Third Screen Unresponsive

Hi All
Noticed that the top inch or so of my screen becomes unresponsive from time to time. So I cannot pull down the notifications or menu. Also if I try to do anything else (call, text, access apps etc) it does not respond.
A restart seems to sort it out but none the less it is annoying and I would like to know if there is something I can do to sort it out?

Is there any type of screen protector installed? Please ensure the firmware is updated to the latest version. Please try booting in safe mode to see if possibly there is a 3rd party app causing the issue. Please see the following for safe boot http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1005163/ If problem still exists then we recommend performing a hardware reset including cache wipe partition. I do have a screen protector but I do not think it is that as it happens randomly and rebooting it fixes it.
When I tried to boot into recovery so that I can clear the cache I also get an error, basically the open droid on his back with the word error so I cannot even boot into recovery.

Thanks but that does not work. When I boot using power and volume up, I get the open droid and the boot options. I choose recovery and it boots but then I get an open droid with a red triangle with an '!' inside coming from his belly and the message 'Error!' underneath. From there the only thing that seems to work is holding the power button for about 10 seconds and that then turns the device off.

THERE YOU HAVE TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
Press Power + Volume up
And release only volume up while holding the power button. And once you see recovery, release power button too.
I find this occurs onmine sometimes too, the dead screen, not the unable to get to recovery. It has to be software as when you rotate the phone the problem still occurs on the top of the phone.
It is very occasional, generally after a reboot, and another reboot will fix it but just an annoyance.
Funny thing is, I have 2 Zenfone 2's one a 2.3ghz 64gb and a 1.8ghz(I'd love it if the transcribe error was right, 8.1ghz would kill anything and heat up the room like a fire) 32gb phone and the problem is present on both...

Hi Guys,
I dropped my zenfone2 in water yesterday.. Just for 2 seconds though.. I found the screen behaving weird,so switched off, removed all parts and kept to dry. There was some lag in the screen. At night again kept it in rice jar and also dried for sometime in sun.
1 problem i am facing is, since yesterday, the exact middle part(about 1 inch) of the screen has become unresponsive. Rest everything is working fine except this. Due to this facing issues with handling the phone.
Please if someone can help that would be great. Or do i need to visit the service centre?

Volume Dialog box not going away after MM update?

I got this bug after upgrading my stock G4 H815 Intl version to MM :
The volume pop-up box/notification(when you use the hardware volume buttons to change the volume)doesn't fade out unless you touch the screen, I timed it and if you don't touch the screen it takes 17sec to finally decide to go away.
It is annoying when the volume pop-up box is blocking something on the screen in an app/webpage etc and especially watching Youtube videos, touching the screen to make the Volume box go away makes Youtubes on screen controls pop up
I have attached a screenshot of exactly what I mean by volume pop-up box - the box at the top of the screen that shows the volume level slider.
Has anyone else encountered this bug or hopefully have a fix or perhaps some advice on something I can try?

Factory reset should work, I really don't want to do that though, will have to setup up everything again.
LG backup is pretty decent though, saves phone system settings, user apps(no data or settings though)

My variant is locked bootloader so no root or custom recovery.
Is not necessary to have unlocked bootloader for hard reset. Only power off your phone and hold volume down and power button when see the lg logo pull finger from power button for 1 sec and hold again and not move your to fingers only when appear the factory reset.

I'm not keen to factory reset and have to setup everything from scratch, phone is otherwise fine after MM update, just this volume box bug.

sometimes after an update is necessary to get a hard reset for getting phone more stable with new software. My phone is not rooted is official and not have this problem, upgrade to marshmallow and everything is ok but sometimes like your phone not everything is ok, in this case is to provide with hard reset. First you have to do a backup with lg backup app in your phone. One ? is better
Any tried a factory reset to sort this out yet?

So after a factory reset it seems that problem is solved. But we still dont know what causing it in the first place. And also its not like im gonna reset my phone everytime that problem comes up. We gotta find a solution without reseting the phone.

Agreed, even if you take it back to LG for them to look at it they'll just do a factory reset. Is there any other way to do a reset on a stock unrooted G4, like clear the dalvik cache etc?
