'System Update ' keeps popping up? - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I have noticed that my phone shows a "system updating" prompt pretty often. I would day or pops up once every hour or even more. Is any one else getting this or know what this is for? I disabled the "Check for updates automatically" in the system updates section of the settings, but this notification still keeps popping up. I'm feeling like this is the reason behind my subpar battery life.
Stock, unrooted

So no one else is getting this prompt?

Every one else is getting this prompt but it has been discussed a million times already.. Please search. If you don't know how, here is the answer. Use Titanium Backup to freeze Mobile Installer and Samsung DM Service

Sorry man. I have been on these forums every day since release, didn't occur to me that some skimmed past me.
Anywho, I searched and the threads all say they get the "System Update" after reboot, but I seem to be getting it regularly after every 1-2 hours, is that normal? I understand it checking for update regularly, but why every hour? like what??
Also, you said to freeze it. I'd have to root then, correct?

Defy Update

I presume everyone has seen this by now as it's also been posted on the Moto forum:
http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/MOTOR...news-for-our-loyal-DEFY-Community/td-p/693707
I haven't. Thanks. I just subscribed.
It's not Froyo, I think! And different with last one release
I just received this update OTA (3.6.360). It's for T- Mo phones (USA?) and has a link listing a number of "fixes". I have no issues with the supposed fixes except in on (T-MO USA) area: wifi calling. I had been experiencing some moments of voice loss on wifi calling. I did a reset which seemed to have cured it. Apparently this update stabilizes wifi calling and also makes "visual voice mail" now work over wifi. Let you know what happens.
I also just received it. Wow the screen scrolling is so silky smooth now. It was nice before, but it just glides now. Actually all selections are smoother. Homescreens, app drawer, widget scrolling. I also notice the touch sensitivity is better too. They greatly improved the overall feel of this phone's UI (not that it was anywhere near bad before). Very nice indeed!

Have been reading on this link about some wifi issues with the update: ie. cannot send text while wifi on, phone getting hot, battery life lower... you see any of those issues?
Thanks

Honestly I have never had an issue with any of those. The only thing I ever noticed was when I was on Wi-Fi, and I would text, I would see the icons for both Wi-Fi and 3G at the same time. Phone never gets hot, and battery life has been good (100% full charge with little use I can go 3 days. 100% charge with heavy use and I get a good day and a half). Since I just update today I will give a a little time, and post back if anything got worse or better.

One reason I ask is because I have terrible cell service and use wifi calling not only for calls but for sending text, which works fine now and would hate to update and discover I can't do this anymore.
OK DID IT... all seems to work as before. Somethings seem faster, sure I'll see a few new things as I go along.

I didn't sign up for anything... or do you just have to be a member of that forum? Otherwise, I presume they're rolling them out in batches?
Just downloaded it. Freed up about 70mb of RAM for me. Seems to be running smoother too. Booted twice which I was not prepared for. Still hoping for an official FroYo. After seeing the leaked release in the dev forum, I think it is a matter of time. If Samsung can release one for the Vibrant..... Yeah. But for now I can learn this like I learned my Win Mo.
EDIT: It appears that after this update I have lost root on my stock ROM. I cannot regain root through super1click nor z4root. Both fail to initialize. Super1 just locks up and z4 force closes. Not sure what could be the culprit. Did a factory data reset and am attempting to reinstall all apps including root.
EDIT: So yes it appears that indeed this has nullified my root access. Trying right now again with z4root and it is stuck in the attempting to apply root screen. Looks like Moto does not want their stuff messed with. Shoulda known better. Any ideas? I am really, really new to Android so I have been trying to avoid too much. Now that it force closed it looks like it will not let it do anything AND uninstalled it from my device. Will not let me install it again either. How nice. Glad I spent $ to be told what I can and can't do with my phone.
I have tried 3 times now to install this update, twice with the phone still rooted and once after unrooting and rebooting. Each time, I see the little Android guy next to an open box with a progress bar, which goes to about 1/3, then I get the triangle with ! inside next to the little Android guy. That isn't supposed to happen, right?
Judging by more recent posts about this update, it's just as well I can't install it.
10 characters!
I deleted the music downloading apps, but FamilyRoom is still there. And I'm finding that a factory reset doesn't restore all that junk, so I still can't install the update. Poop.

I've backed up all the bloatware onto another SD I removed with titanium, so I hope once putting those back on and unrooting will fix it.

I'm new to rooting and have the same problem, can't un-root, can't root after update. superoneclick stops at "reading OS version properties" when trying to root. Then says "super user not installed" when trying to un-root.
The worst part is the update reinstalled all that crap bloatware which is the reason I rooted in the first place. My bad for not un-rooting BEFORE I updated.

same here- anyone here knows how to fix this issue?
I finally got it figured out. My problem was that I deleted some "bloatware" files that, for some reason, are essential to have in order for the update to run. Assuming you did the same thing:
If you haven't already, use Z4Root to root your phone and then install the recovery app found in post 83 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875233&page=9 . Run that recovery app in Recovery Boot mode, select Backup, and let it create a nandroid backup of your phone. That backup will end up in /goapkrev/backup on your SD card.
You'll need to download the ROM from post #39 on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880813&page=4 Unrar it, then copy the folder containing 4 files into /goapkrev/backup on your card.
Run Recovery again, but this time select Backup & Restore - Advanced Restore. Select the folder you just copied to your card (2010-12-31.15.54.38), then select Restore System and let it run. That will leave your apps and data untouched. After the restore, select the option to reboot the phone.
Download and install the update, then reboot.
After rebooting, you can re-root using SuperOneClick found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913709 Don't forget to enable USB debugging first.
So far, so good

[Q] Need Help with OTA on a stock unrooted please

Hello all, This is my situation...I recently got a message from t-mob saying they have a new update..I don't trust any t-mob updates and as such, I clicked on postpone for 1 day. I then updated the phones firmware using kies. Problem is that after I updated through kies I still get that annoying message stating update postponed. I tried going to about phone in settings to uncheck the marks and all it does is say "congratulations t-mobile has sent you a new software update for your device" nothing else can be accessed when I click on software update. My phone is not rooted and is stock. How do I get rid of this annoyance and how do I stop device management from sending me these ota udates?
53 people have viewed this, isn't there anyone with knowledge on this that can help please?
unfortunately the best advice I can give you is to try a factory data reset or just wait...usually tmobile will push updates for a certain amount of time and then stop, from then on only manual updates so you can try and ride it out
Also I'm not sure if this will work as I have never tried it but you can go into settings and applications and disable device management

[Q] How to turn off pesky notification sound...started happening suddenly

I'm a long-time note 2 user and usually have no problem with settings. Out of
nowhere, my Note 2 started sounding a notification tone (first tone in the list)
and I haven't found a way to disable that notification. I think it's related to a secondary email
account... yahoo or Outlook perhaps. Tried the obvious options to turn notifications
off/on but nothing has worked. This thing is waking me up at all hours and disturbing
my lifestyle in general. The only way I've found to turn off the continuous sounding of the tone is to touch the top notification bar. Such a hassle. Any real suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.
This is bull$4!* I agree
This is bad enough to make me want to switch to an iPhone.

If only that were possible. With Android 4.3 the notification is for leaving and rejoining the 4Glte coverage area. For those of us that live on the edge of 4G lte coverage it makes for a long annoying night. I have emergency notifications that I DO need at night, but not the damn network change every 5 minutes.

UPDATE from SPRINT
I talked to Sprint. They have confirmed that many ppl are complaining about the constant "upbeep" and "downbeep" tones. I understand it is not just 4Glte/CDMS coverage change, but also Wifi and Bluetooth availability. They say Samsung is aware of the unpopularity of the issue and will have a patched version out very soon.
I have resorted to disabling 4Glte all the time and disabling WiFi and Bluetooth at night. this seems to be a reasonable short term work around.
Thanks for reading.
Sean
I've never had any notification tone for network/wifi mode changes. I'm not sure why the stock rooted MK4 ROM wouldn't have the same issue but it doesn't or this forum would be full of angry people. I assume you guys are on the stock unrooted MK4 Jellybean ROM? If so, I'm glad I told my wife not to allow the update on her Note 2. I'm currently on stock rooted MK4 ROM and have never had this type of notification. But I would hate it also.
With this all being said, time for you guys to visit the Note 2 Toolkit thread and get rooted! Just one more reason why people prefer to root their devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957155
Once rooted you will need to ask ROM devs for help in removing the network notifications. I'm sure there's an easy way to do this with Root Explorer file manager app but you must be rooted to gain access to the file system. This is my only advice because I'm pretty sure an update will not come soon enough for you guys. Updates come from Samsung then Sprint sits on it for testing etc, then Sprint pushes it OTA. You can root and fix the issue in a few minutes or wait and pray for an update.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. And Sean, thanks for talking to Sprint about this matter...I'm sure that all the suggestions here will help others with the same kind of issue I've been experiencing. For me, it's a wait and see kind of thing in that whatever the change in settings I make, it could take an entire day or even more to verify success in shutting down this maddening interruption.
There have been days when, because of a setting I changed, my phone would not ring at all when a call was coming in even though the ringer volume setting was at 100 percent loudness.
The good news for me is that as of this morning, I had an uninterrupted night's sleep last night which, obviously, could mean that I've finally stumbled into a solution. But I am reserving the 'Mission Accomplished' party for when I am absolutely sure my settings are the way they should be. I hate big let-downs, especially when they follow great expectations and celebrations of euphoria.
BTW, the latest changes I made were done inside Facebook's notifications preferences. It seems the Facebook crew are on a mission to keep its members fully involved in troubleshooting the 'traps' they set for us. Kinda reminds me of Hunger Games.
Fingers crossed now...maybe I'll have another full-night's sleep, but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.
Thanks again to all who pitched in their $000.02000. I'll update here any more results that might be helpful.

Have to admit that rooting is very tempting...thing is, I live in a new area and have no 'guru' type friends here and I'd be concerned that I'd get myself in a corner and not be able to get out. I just don't know enough about rooting to trust myself with doing it to my only smartphone. For instance, does rooting wipe all data completely? I'd have to back up everything I want to keep? And how would I do that backup. Will the memory be re-formatted? How do I know which apps work and which ones don't work on a rooted phone?
Yeah, you guessed it...I'm an old guy...66...and fairly savvy with being a PC/smartphone user...but I haven't studied coding since the mid-eighties and don't remember what I learned about it then. Still, I'm intrigued with rooting my Note 2. Maybe someday.

DrDubner, the Rooting Toolkit I linked to above is very simple and straight forward to use and it has very clear and easy to understand instructions within the user interface. Basically if you can read you can root your phone with ease. Also there is no need to backup anything on you phone or sd card (although it's always advisable just in case) because the root process does not change, delete, wipe, or alter anything other than enabling root permissions on your phone and flashing an insecure boot image & custom recovery in which you do not have to ever use and will not be visible upon normal day to day usage.
BUT with this being said, I would highly recommend that you do some more homework FIRST and find out exactly which app or system process/app that is triggering the notifications BEFORE rooting your phone. It may turn out to be something that can be fixed without rooting your phone and either way you go about this, you need to know the exact cause of the notifications before doing anything.
Hopefully you can get more specific info about your notifications and post them here for others to help you better. Like I said, I've never had the network notifications that you described... on any ROM stock or custom. Perhaps it's not network notifications and mabye it's a system app or user installed app that is triggering these notifications? Keep us posted so we can get to the bottom of this issue much faster than Samsung/Sprint patch update that may never come.
Yeah I've never heard of this problem. Stock 4.3 and my phone never beeps for coverage issues. Idk to me it sounds like there's an app set up to continue reminding you of an unread notification. Like the Messages app reminder feature. Plus he did say taping on the notification bar stops it so that means one of those notifications on the dropdown is the culprit and when you tap on the bar it resets your notification (no blinking or sounds). Maybe it's time for a factory reset.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
I agree. It does sond like a repeat notification. The notification pull down should give you a clear indication of which app is giving you the notification. Double check notification settings within each suspect app itself. If you can't find it that way then uninstall suspect apps one at a time until you find the culprit. Facebook and other social apps would be a good place to start. Also check Sprint visual voice mail and your messaging notification settings. You might be surprised at the simple cause of this.

Well, I didn't either until I flashed back to stock. The phone started throwing the nag before I re roooted. I dunno but the above solution worked.
The system update notification pops up on regularly on stock unrooted phones too. When me & my wife bought our Note 2's they both did this on every boot. My wife's phone is factory untouched and it does it on each boot. My phone is rooted and it also does it on each boot. It doesn't really bother me.
Mine only does it on boot. Which isn't too bad.
search xda for the fotakill apk. push it to system set permissions reboot enjoy.. I've tried freezing things to get rid of it but it caused more problems than it cured.. of course you have to be rooted to push to system
That is not a nag, it is a notification for Sprint users that the phone is downloading the updated PRL from the server. It will do this on every reboot or reset. The PRL is the Preferred Roaming List. It updates the PRL each time the phone boots or resets based on it's current location. The popup is just telling you that it is doing it.

It's not updating the PRL. I've had a custom PRL installed and it sticks after multiple reboots. Yet, I can manually update PRL and it will install the Sprint default. Me thinks it's just checking for a software update from Sammy.

Stuck on the activate your device screen (registering the device with the network)

So Yesterday I flashed a SM-G960U(SPR) with a SM-G960U(XAS). It fixed the problem where I have to see the damn Sprint Boot and Shutdown Animation but now I have this problem during setup wherein it says Activate Your Device and Registering the Device with the network after every reboot (Its freaking annoying). Its been stuck there for almost 9 hours already and still not progressing. In case anyone is asking, Yes I have the signal from my carrier (Globe, Im from the Philippines), Yes my phone can connect to the internet, and Yes I have tried everything from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sp...-to-remove-sprint-omadm-notification-t3636264 but I dont like force stopping the OMADM and Activate your device screen everytime I reboot. if there's anymore questions please feel free to ask. Please help a brother out. Thanks

I had this exact same thing happen on my Sprint S5, but in the S5 days you werent able to completely flash another carriers firmware. The only thing that would stop that is having root access and freezing the app in titanium backup pro while on a touchwiz based ROM. Anyways, there are some non-root methods out there to freeze apps, but im not sure if thell work for system apps. Worth a shot IMO if its bugging you that badly.
