Hey all. Starting about two weeks ago, I was starting to get constant FC's on my Camera application and all apps that use the camera.
When I tried restoring back to a nightly where the camera had worked, it opened to the front facing camera and as soon as I tried to switch it to the back camera, it froze, then FC'd and refused to open.
I did a completely clean wipe and installed CM7 Final and I am still having the same issue.
I have tried:
1. Fixing permissions
2. Clearing the data for the Camera App through settings->applications and also through Titanium Backup
3. Deleting the Camera App through Titanium and reinstalling CM7 Final
4. Installing a new kernel (SZ)
5. Switching back to a Sense ROM (camera was still FC'ing)
6. Un-rooting my phone AND hard resetting the stock ROM
and NOTHING has worked. I NEED my camera, it's one of the main reasons why I love my phone so much!
I'm on HW004 which I suspect has something to do with this all.
I took this into the Sprint store the last time this happened and they told me that they "replaced the camera application" but I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate.
I would normally take this into the Sprint store again but it's very difficult for me to get there (I'm a college student without a car) so I'd prefer to find a way of fixing it without having to bring it in.
Anyone have any ideas???

If you've wiped and flashed to a different rom, unrooted your phone and did a hard reset of the stock rom and THIS PROBLEM IS STILL PRESENT?.....Then I hate to tell you dude....you don't have a software problem! You need to find a way to the sprint store OR call customer service and go through the whole technical support crap and have them send you a replacement phone or something. It sounds to me like something messed up your camera to where it won't work any more.....maybe you dropped it or something...spilled O.J. on it or something.....Aliens messed around with your phone and are now laughing at you......SOMETHING WENT WRONG WITH YOUR CAMERA and it isn't anything involving software like the camera app!

GOOD LUCK!!
I ordered a new rear facing camera for my phone and installed the new one, but now when I go to the Camera app says the gallery has stopped, or comes up and says the camera is not detected then closes the app. The front facing camera works fine and the old camera module I had in it works still too. Do I need to wipe and reinstall my ROM, or is it just a bad module? I noticed that it has 120511 on the board and my original shows 120411 so maybe it's just not compatible? The reason I was replacing it is because the old camera has marks/spots that show up when you try and take pictures. I tried to clean it with a cotton swab and condensed air which I think helped a little but can't get it fully clear. :crying:
Could be a driver issue i suppose if it is in fact a different hardware version.
On searching this forum, I found a post entitled " [Q] Front Facing camera not working?" which pretty much describes the problem I am having with the back facing camera. I have had the phone for 6 months, used the camera a lot, and now find that I can not longer activate the camera. When I select the camera icon, I get the perimeter of the camera screen with all the camera buttons on the left and right sides of the screen. But in the center of the screen is a popup box that says: "Warning - Unknown error occurred."
The gallery still works, the front camera still works, but the camera on the back, which is the one I always use, gives this message.
I tried: powering off the phone, removing the SD and the sim cards, and removing the battery. I have tried accessing the camera from the gallery. And I cleared the cache on the camera. None of these things helped.
I am not a very tech savvy user so I am hesitant to start removing caches (some suggested clearing cache and even the data in storage media and gallery), and I really begin to sweat when anyone suggests that I do a "factory data reset", especially if it turns out that this is a hardware problem.
Based on my description, is it more likely that this is a hardware or software problem? Is there anything else I should try before I begin dumping cache, data, or a factory reset. Any particular order I should proceed with these options?
Would appreciate any and all help. My camera is the most important app on my phone and I use it constantly. I hate being without it!
Just install any other camera app from play store and confirm it's not hardware related.

hard reset?
My rear camera suddenly stopped working. My phone didn't get any hurt in nowhere, just suddenly it stopped working. I was takin photos since 10 minutes before, I locked the phone and I noticed that Torch tile disappeared. I thought it was a bug and I didn't care anymore. The day before I noticed that even rear camera stopped working, I was trying to take a photo but the "change camera" (from front to rear) disappeared in every camera app I was using, camera apps opened by default with front camera opened. I tried to reflash ROM thinking that it was a ROM problem (even if I was using the same rom since months ago and I've never had any kind of problem), no results. Reflashing everything starting from stock firmware, no results. As a last hope, I tried to replace the rear camera by buying a new one, but the problem it's still here. Could someone that experienced the same problem, tell me where the problem could be? Or maybe some possible fixes, every kind of help is appreciated. Thanks.
Same
I have the exact same problem. After wiping the cache the rear camera is recognised and I am able to take a picture with it (which is not saved into gallery) but about 5 minutes later the option to switch to rear camera has gone and all camera apps (including social media such as snapchat) is stuck on front camera. This leads me to think it's not a hardware problem but rather that of software with which I am running cm13 nightlies that I have updated every day for the past week in the hope it will be patched.
I have this exact same problem on my d855 too..!
Sooooo frustrating, I've been looking everywhere for a fix, tried full factory reset the other day (I'm running full regular stock with no root or anything), and sadly that didn't work either... I'm glad to read someone has tried changing the camera hardware, cos that was I step I've considered taking, but I now know would be a waste of time and money...
But still, the problem persists..!

I don't think that's a software problem simply for one reason: I'm on the same rom and kernel since months and camera worked fine. It stopped working suddenly with no reason.

Yeah now you made me understand why the camera worked for some minutes. I'll try clearing cache after installing new camera module. I'll report the result. Thanks anyway.
Edit: It's not working. At first boot, systemUI doesn't load well, when I reboot everything works fine but rear camera isn't working. Maybe late I'll try with phone's camera. Now I'm using the new one bought some days ago.
same here!!!!! I'm using LOS13.1 on my d855 and i can't fix it... any idea?
What OS are you guys running? Is everyone experiencing the issue on Cm13?
Also try cleaning the camera connections really well.
I have same problem. Although i expirienced it first time on Lineage OS 14.1. Now 30B, but it still not working. I was listening to music through external speakers, and suddenly it stopped working. Music app was "playing" but i couldnt hear anything and when i exit the app my phone just stops working and starts being laggy as hell. Later that day i found out my camera is not working. I tried reattaching cam connector but it did not work...idk if i should order a new camera or it might be a software fix or something
same problem
happened to me after upgrading to 6.0 , downgraded back to 5 with no luck , even opened my phone and released and reconnected the 3 cables inside with no luck at all . don't know what to do
It's "good" to see other people with the same problem as me.
I replaced the camera and it still won't work.
I'm afraid that it might the problem with our motherboard...How can software block our camera even tho all of us fully reinstalled ROMs/Modems etc? It would be awesome if dev would see this and tell us what is the actual cause of this
If you reinstalled the entire OS using a TOT method, no files are left behind. This is more likely a hardware issue.
The Camera module is extremely close to the problematic hot chip on the G3 so it's not impossible something got messed up.
I have a d852 in Canada that doesn't get hot and I'm having this problem too. Going to order a new camera since I know this is a hardware issue. Hopefully fixed the issue. Not cool having no rear camera or flashlight
It's impossible Every G3 gets hot...you either are not heavy user or idk...but every G3 that i've held had the issue of overheating at some point...and indeed it can ruin everything...imagine 120C on your processor...that kills everything around it...idk if my processor got that hot as i've seen in some cases it did on internet, but it did go up to 90ish...and that is too damn hot
FIX ISSUE be Done
Hi all .
Problem method for repair
Issue is easy buy new rear camera D855 or this same conector D820/D821/Nexus5 is this same and all works fine I'm tested on my D855 International
camera From D821 perfect fit and don't had any foult. Great work and my G3 alive rear again :good:
( !!! URGENT !!! Don't put any paper or any dirt this is short fix and maybe You can crack connector camera on motherboard !!!)
If U still like Your's G3 don't put any **** tourial with fix BUY NEW CAMERA couple $$ AND FIX very cheap and clean LG STILL ALIVE
(Camera had two IC chip and that is problem (burned or heat out)
Flash light it's well had same problem if U have problem camera,
In camea foult You cant turn on flashlight (software thinking camera all time working if camera is broke).
If u tru turn on flashlight he said (on broke camera) " Immpossible turn on flash light when camera work" !!!!!
I've got the "cannot connect to camera" issue since last summer, but I can still use the camera if I reset my phone once or twice. It became seriously day by day until now, I cannot activate my camera completely. "Flashlight" shows gray in top menu (but flashlight hardware is fine), Google Camera will FC after few seconds I open it.
I saw many threads in XDA and Chinese forums, tried safe mode, factory reset, wipe all data and even flash factory images, relock bootloader by following those instructions but nothing helps. I don't know why because I didn't do anything to my phone and it just naturally became like this. Except for the camera, all the hardwares and softwares as well as functions are working properly, no signs of getting worse.
I'm not sure the camera module or the motherboard has broken or not, anyone still have any ideas to fix this?
