Is anyone able to get 2K out even 1080 to work? Highest video quality I can select is 720, which is only a quarter resolution of the screen, and it shows.
You have to root your device and delete your recent YouTube app and install previous version to enable 1080p and 1440p

T-Mobile note4 couldn't install because it was already installed in the system .... So in my case I had to delete the app from inside the system ..... And uninstalled all updates .... And disable auto update from play store ....
I got it working with 5.10.1.5. Don't get why Google removed the option though. Are there any benefits to 5.9 over 5.10?

Yes true on the steps. I didn't have to remove the system app though. Just uninstalled the updates and it worked for me after unchecking auto updates in play store.

Thank you so much!!! I was incredibly disappointed that my brand new phone with a 2k screen could only get 720p youtube. Amazing clarity now.
So does anybody have a fix for hulu? On my HTC M7, there was an HD quality setting that was better than high. On this phone I can only get medium and high setting. Even high is pretty pixelated. Would love to see it in 1080p. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Yes the 1440 is very nice!. Had to uninstall updates, then install apk. And I'm running dalvik. Had a few issues with art and never saw a performance increase.
I'm running in ART mode, wondering if that is why I can't get 1080p or 1440p with the 5.9 version. Guess I'll switch back to Dalvik and see if that makes a difference.

Odd.. I had no problems. If I start up youtube again, it defaults lower, but when I switch it stays for that session.
Couldn't get 1080 or 1440 to work on 5.9. 5.10 works fine for me though. Occasionally I have to restart the video to get the setting to stick

Do you mean the 'High quality on mobile' setting in the General section? That just defaults the playback to HD when not connected through wifi. HD streaming on youtube can consume quite a bit of data if you are on a mobile network thats why its set by default to low def in the settings.

As mentioned if you enable 'High quality on mobile' in the general settings then you 'should' be able to watch 720p streams over 3g but it will consume alot of data.

For some odd reason, my YouTube app seems to be playing the wrong video all the time on Wi-Fi. Perhaps something to do with my ISP?

This does not work on my phone.
I have unlimited data on Three so I dont care about my Data Consumption however videos still play at something around 360p even with HQ on and the options ticked in the settings.
I have the same issue. HD over mobile checked in youtube, but still can't view videos in 720p. Any one got a solution?
I hooked my Galaxy Nexus up to my 50" plasma, and Youtube looked great on there. Netflix looked horrible.
I unrooted and went back to the stock 4.0.2 and videos are still not showing up in 720p while on 3g. The reason I tried that was because I vaguely remember that it worked when I first got my galaxy nexus. Anyway, going to go back to 4.0.1 and see if that helps.

The S4 can't play youtube videos in 720/1080p 60 fps. Is there a hack to allow us to watch in 60fps???
I used my dad's note 3, and he can watch youtube in 60fps, but not my s4. I can't watch certain videos in HD when they only allow 60fps for their 720/1080p videos. Sucks.
Example. Dawkins nba videos only uses 720/1080p 60fps. So I can only watch them in 480p. Gotta be an app that works around that.

go to the youtube app settings and change the limit data usage.
60fps youtube, download install root explorer, start app, accept root access, go to root directory, system, hold and press build.prop, open in text editor, find ro.product.model=SGH-M919, change the "SGH-M919" to "GT-I9505", save backout, go to app settings application manager, all, clear data for google play market and youtube, reboot.
You can have a 1080p60 option but it will freeze while sound play, so i choose gt-i9505 to only have the 72060fps option instead of frozen 108060fps, also i recon you have cm12.1 instead of touchwiz because cm12.1 is more updated and faster than touchwiz, 40fps for touchwiz and 60fps for cm12.1 with performance enabled in settings, so if you want a true 60fps playback from youtube then install cm12.1 with the instructions from above over it,
Just leave a thanks, ill appreciate.

Edit: It worked. Thank you.
A lot of videos start off glitched, and the screen is gray, but all you have to do is start the video back to 0:00, and it'll act right.
Gonna hold off on CM12.1. Never trust it with GPS and data and whatnot. I'm good with 40fps for now, maybe when I feel like experimenting a little, I'll try it out.
Edit #2: Now all videos start off with weird lines, unviewable and gray, but not the end of the world. Just have to start the video back to 0:00 and back to normal video. Not a huge deal.

I was on stock Metro PCS ROM and the highest quality I'd get was 480p rare to get 720p on videos just regular not 60fps. I flashed Albe's Lollirom and I get 720p and 1080p on every video I've watched that has that option and if the video has 720p60fps I get the option to use it too. I believe it's just an option on Lollipop because on KitKat I haven't seen it. If you want to flash Lollipop Touchwiz I recommend Lollirom or Osiris. Main difference is that Lollirom has lot S6 features and Osiris is more stock but with some features. Both are really good.
Ok this sucks. Yeah it "works", but now it glitches for every video and the playing it back at 0:00 doesn't work now. Changing back to sgh m919.

I'm only on wifi, with the speedtest.net app i tested my connection and it is around 90 mbps, so i don't think that that is the problem
Same problem here.
I'm also having the exact same issue. Both on LTE and Wi-Fi, complete stock not even rooted.
I cleared the YouTube app data and it seems to be working correctly now.
Correction, not all vids to be corrected. It seems like if the video is offered with 1080p and 60fps then we only get the option for 480p. No idea why.
I have the same annoying problem. All videos only show 480p option. I'm stock on OOS 3.1.2.
Edit: Tried watching a 4K video (I know our display is only 1080p) but in this video it gave me the option for 1080p but on videos that are in 1080p it only gives me the option for 480p wth?
Extremely frustrating. It doesn't make any sense at all.
