removing "bloat" in wm 6.5 and carrier software, mostly the latter

hi,
just got first winmo phone, have been avid computer user for years, but never had felt like getting a pda or smartphone, until now.
I want to find a whole new home-cooked ROM to flash, which is, obviously, good. have the htc imagio, and in searching have not found hardly anything, so may put that on back burner for now.
Meanwhile there is lots of stuff I don't want on the phone, namely all the carrier's software, it pops up at annoying times with an advertisement, and i'm not going to use it anyway, and it's taking up space, and possibly resources. I just saw, before I registered, a post including some info, but can't find it now. I've done a bunch of searches and come up with similar tasks, but on different phones and different os's. i've also come across the infamous "this is posted everywhere" post, but nevertheless I am not able to find anything specific to my phone. i want to remove stuff like touch flo, mobile email, visual voice mail, vznavigator, city id, and so on.
thanks for anyhelp,

[Q] Android and WiFi with redirects

Posted this in another forum, but you all are the experts. Impossible for me to access my work WiFi because of redirects (splash screen to accept use parameters).
Wondering if a custom ROM fixes it or if there is another solution.
Having an issue connecting to WiFi with Evo updated via official release of 2.2. I couldn't access it via 2.1 either. It's an odd network designation.
However, the iPhone can connect once I okay the error message.
Is there a work around that you may know about? Web search basically told me that the protocol is old and useless and that it should be changed. That is not possible.
Network designation is 1.1.1.1. I was unable to add links clarifying this because I am a new user.
Well Android can not connect to 1.1.1.1 addresses / networks / redirects. However the iPhone can. Is it inherent to the Android, or is there an app or tweak to get it to work.
This message ends by saying it will be fixed with Froyo.
Still can't post links to show what I mean.
Steamliver I just did a Google search for "Android 1.1.1.1" and this was the top result: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1597
I'm guessing this is the problem you are describing. Sounds frustrating and it has been going on for a long time. The newest post at the time I'm writing this recommends installing the Fennec browser (Firefox for Android, basically) and that worked for the poster.
If you have a laptop you could bring to work and tether via USB, I wonder if that would work? Just a temporary work around to use the phone to establish the wifi connection, then view the browser redirect on the laptop, accept, and then maybe you would be good to go?
Also, the simplest thing might be to call the IT department and ask them for help. Given Android's growing market share, one of them probably already have an Android phone and a fix for this problem. Good luck.
I have tried firefox and that did not solve the problem, does anyone have another ideas how to solve this.
It seems that 1.1.1.1 is locked in the android.

[Q] Transitioning from Palm Pre to Evo 4G

Posted in androidcentral and went no where this seems to be a better site for this sort of thing. Transitioning from the Palm Pre Sprint to the Evo. Saw some Pre to / Evo4G threads but none have the info I need. Couple of questions hopefully someone can answer. I already rooted the EVO with the AC rom also nandroid with cm6 (the Pre basically comes already rooted just enter konami code and reboot). Hopefully these answers can help others later on too.
It allows to to make/end calls, send sms, open apps, reboot, change wallpaper, turn GPS on and off, get phone coordinates, turn leds/vibrator on. In short basically every function the phone does can be triggered remotely via ssh.
Nothing that will let you mess with people on command line if your phone is lost or stolen but lookout and prey are good apps for locating your phone.
OpenSSH server?
There is an app in the market but the lack of libraries, optware and physicial keyboard really make this a bad phone to use the command line in. Tunneling in or out is also a lost cause a vpn would be the best bet for this.
DDNS?
There is an app which is pretty nice but haven't found a good http server like the Pre so there is really no need for it.
Http server? My pre had a webserver with php. When I went to a page the Pre called its location and displayed a google maps page. I would prefer if theres no app so if I lose my phone theres nothing that can be easily uninstalled or turned off. Also good for hosting files locally.
Haven't found a replacement for this.
You can do Ubuntu chroot on the Evo but with no xserver it lags and is not a good experience.
Is there a third party app for homebrew mods like preware or cydia? Android market is more open than apple or palms so every app you can find there no alternative needed. Although sometimes you can find apks in threads for apps that are not in the market yet just put them in your sd card and browse with a file manager to install these.
Is there a way to download your sms database file like the iphone or pre ? Haven't found out where they are saved but plenty of apps to backup texts to either sd or gmail so no need to go searching for them.
I do have the script that installs optware on the Pre I tried doing the commands manually but failed. Haven't given up yet just havent had time since after midterms it will be on top of the list. Is there anyone with alot of experience with android that might also want to try this. It is a shell (.sh) script but I changed the extension to txt so I could upload it.

bing maps almost got it right, any fix?

sounds ridiculous but i just updated my focus to mango on monday. for the longest time my home pc would not update it, kept giving different error codes each time. i had to replace my original phone with an ATT refurbished one and so i just assumed in the refurbishing process this "new" phone was FUBAR with updates. anyway someone recommended trying another PC, so i used my netbook to no avail and then my work laptop with great success. mango is awesome!
anyway, i love how bing maps will read directions through bluetooth in my car, but i am a little irritated that it won't continue to read the directions until i get to my destination? it will just read the direction i click on and the one after it, but then say "thank you, goodbye" and will stop giving directions. i have to manually go into bing maps again and click on the direction i want to be read to me. just curious if anyone has gotten it to read all the directions until you get to the new location without touching your phone? i notice you can go through a text message conversation without touching your phone via bluetooth, so it would be nice if you could do that with maps also.
Nope, that is the way it was designed to "work" (despite it being an illegal activity in many areas). There is nothing you can do about it, short of buying a real GPS nav system from the marketplace.
Question, Why wasn't this an issue with WM? As crapy as WM was the Maps app worked flawlessly and makes this new one look like crap. Just trying to understand I guess at to why it wasn't an issue before but it is now. It is kind of dangerous to have to tap and look at the screen to see where your going.

[Q] How to write an app

Ok its not note2 specific just that I have a note 2....
I need to create an app that can read a text, send a text, and read/write a file from an external usb stick, it sounds easy but.....
So I'm open to suggestions as to what IDE/toolchain I should be aiming at, I have wrote ''an app'' that does this, but its actually in picbasic and runs on a pic 18f2550 with a serial modem and internal flash
I want to do away with the pic/modem and just an android phone.
One other thing, the file on the usb stick, the usb stick isnt, its actually a controller for other hw devices, i just make the controller appear to usb as mass storage as that makes a simple text file an easy way for it to communicate, if its possible...I'd sooner make the controller appear as a serial coms device like the 9600 8n1 standard but I dont know if i could get away with that via OTG where as I know OTG can read write a text file..
I haven't started playing with it yet, but you might find Intellij Idea to be a tool you can learn to use.
For Open Source Projects it's free.

Thanks, I'm not too bothered what I write it in anything from C to zx81basic would do the job, its just getting it into a form the phone can execute
..
Just wondering if you tried using google for your question.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

If I were you, I would check out Tasker on the play store. Theres a huge following with tons of available and customizeable profiles.
If you haven't heard of it, it's an extremely powerful app that allows you to write (or apply) various profiles to automate almost anything, whether youre a beginner or advanced user.

I half agree, but for a generic question like this, it's much more effective to ask in a community of mobile enthusiasts who might have a little more insight. Imo.

Thanks guys, I just had a look at app inventor and it made me want to cry...
I'm used to c/basic/asm (dare I say cobol, well i am 46....) so anything drag and drop I find infuriating/restrictive/non intuative, even tough there supposed to simple to use, I find them not...
you will no doubt be aware of such apps as prey, find my droid, wavesecure, they all can read an incoming text for a keyword and if present perform an action, thats similar to what i am trying to achive, well its part of it etc
easiest way to simplify this is imagine a lighthouse for boats, I need to be able to send a message to my phone at the top of a lighthouse, to turn the light on. I also need to be able to query the light status.
now doing this with a arduino/pic and a bag of relays was no biggy, what was the issue was the phone was connected via its connector running serial data at 9600 and modem AT protocols from the 1970's....
this all worked fine, 100% working, but the phones had the issue that after a random amount of days they would stop responding to commands, but would say 'ok' to every command given...
so replaced with a modem module and a seperate 2 line lcd, this worked fine, but put the cost up....
so decided that as old android phones with damaged screens are often very cheap, and most support OTG, the way is open to try doing this once again, using the phone to receive a text, reply to the text, and control the light by writing out a txt file to the ''usb mass storage stick'' thats simply light.txt and is a txt file containing the word 'on' 'off' or 'status'
The pic controller which is happy to pretend to be USB storage, and look for this file, and take the required action, if it sees 'on' or 'off' it simply toggles a pin to on or off, if its 'status' it sense the light, and creates a file of answer.txt with 'yes' or 'no' as content
the app can look for the answer.txt, and depending on it being 'yes' or 'no', send a replay text with 'ok' or 'bring a spare bulb'
of course I dont have a lighthouse, but you see what i'm trying to achive with an android phone over the old working but unreliable T68i (I have a few of them about a dozen left I think, all have same firmware bug)
Wow. I hope you're not making anything dangerous. SMS text `cancel'. SMS text `bang'.
Seriously though, I'm 44. So respect to any middle-aged dudes in the house. :good:

Lol no its a replacement for a circuit that of all things originally started with a motorola startac and a relay across button '5' to dial help
I dont want to be too open about the 'final design' as I want to present it to the forum as a working prototype that others can copy/use and dont want beating to the finish etc.
I've put many years of work into this on and off, even bought 20 2nd hand phones for the 'beta test' which then 'cancelled' due to the phones not being able to be left on 24/7 without locking up, and i killed a few making them 'battery free' and some more making a reboot circuit that just pulled power which they didnt like happening too often, so I abandoned it till now, I now think I'm onto a winner with the new 'design'
