Opinions and thoughts on the screen?

So I'm wondering if the screen on the phone is actually nice? I've read mixed reviews but I'm just wondering if its exaggerated or if the screen is actually nice. How would current owners of the device rate it? Is it on par with the retina display? Are pixels actually noticeable? Any info would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

I have spent around an hour with it and screen is CRAP compared to iPhone 4. Very very dark even on max brightness and AUTO off. There is no white shade, just grey. If you look closer, you can see individual pixels even they call it HD screen. Very dissapointed, such an amazing design with fresh Android, but terrible screen. Not even SAMLOED+.
iPhone 4 screen is unbeatable.

Really? In a way this wouldn't surprise me, though. My 4 and 4S have always been crisper than the other phones I see. I would've hoped the GN would be better though.
Can you comfortably load a desktop web page and see all the text without zooming?

Funny, since usually people complain that AMOLED screens are too ****ing bright.

Crank the brightness up a bit and the GN is a decent screen, certainly better than my NS. Now I also have an iPhone 4s (work made me do it!) and I'd say the colours are a little more realistic on the iPhone. In the end the screen size is of greater benefit to me and fairly soon
Supercurio will have worked his voodoo magic and we will be able to choose whatever colour temperature we want.
Edit... the screen isn't dull in comparison with the iPhone, that's complete crap (sorry). And there are no pixels when zooming in on web pages.

Take iPhone 4 and put next to Samsung(max brightness) and you will see HOW dark is sammy`s display and how "white" is white colour - just terrible. Samsung should have used some really premium display in their flagship superphone instead of this crap. I`m so used to superbright retina screen, looking at sammy`s screen felt like its $50 phone.

I had Sensation and its screen was pretty bright, I would say more brighter than GN.
All of you who are saying GN screen is woow/amazing - you haven`t seen iPhone 4 screen. Put both side to side and you`ll see yourself. If you had $20 Nokia, then of course it will be "mind blowing" screen for you.

There are some funny people out there.
IMHO the screen is fantastic. Side by side with the GS2 it blows it out of the water. Sharper, clearer AND bigger. The GS2 looks distinctly low res.
Sure the iphone screen is pretty but its tiny.
Im sure people will disagree with me but thats the great thing about opinions

Can anyone do a side by side screen comparison and post pictures?

I have seen iPhone 4 screen.
I still prefer the Galaxy Nexus screen.
opinion is subjective. you cannot tell me that I am wrong for liking the Galaxy Nexus screen compared to the iPhone 4. you can only disagree with me.

Kind of YES it is - because its huge and high res(it has to be, otherwise pixels will jump into your face)

I had so much hope for GN screen, now its out and I`m struggling to make a decision, but I need larger screen.

It's not really surprising that the iPhone has a "better"screen. It uses a high density IPS panel. IPS is well known for its superior brightness, color accuracy, and viewing angles. There's a reason IPS monitors are so wildly popular in photo/graphic editing fields.
Some will disagree because of their ridiculous iPhone animosity, but they don't really matter.
That said, the GSII screen (the SAMOLED+) is not "junk". Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

Just google/youtube, quite few. But it doesn`t reflect real life situation because its recorded by camera and it does change colours etc. Go to mobile phone shop, take both and put side by side.

That's funny, I've owned every iPhone iteration except for this latest (4S) and I currently own a Galaxy S II. I took my S II to my friend, who imported a Galaxy Nexus, and is replacing his iPhone 4S (doesn't like it). We cranked the brightness to max on all 3 devices, and then to minimum on all 3.
The Galaxy Nexus had, arguably, the best screen of the bunch. We asked multiple people (5 or 6 of our friends were over) and they all agreed. Watching videos and looking at pictures shows a *WORLD* of difference. The screen on the iPhone is brilliant, but compared to the size and resolution of the Galaxy Nexus...you're kidding yourself if you think it's crap.
Disclaimer: The whites *are* more pure white on the iPhone, and the colors are more true to life; however, that's a common difference betwixt SUPERAMOLED screens and the screen in the iPhone. Some people prefer the higher contrast and color saturation in the AMOLED screens...and I'm starting to agree. After owning every iPhone I used to love them, but now I'm blown away every time I turn on my phone because of the way the colors pop.
Your opinion might be that the screen on the iPhone is better...but to say that the screen on the Galaxy Nexus is crap kind of tells me you've either never seen it in the same conditions as the iPhone or you're expressing your opinion through exaggeration.

Ok.... the screen did make me go wow ! As it has most people ive shown it to.
I dont agree with the apple corporate way of working so an iphone was never an optiom.
IMHO the GN is the best android screen ive seen.

Yes I have. I owned an iPhone 4 before this phone. I prefer the blacks and colours on the GN - much deeper blacks, much more vivid colours.
Whites/light greys, however, are a different story. On high brightness the GN wins, but anything lower and yes, they're grainy, bandy and greyey. Very poor, but I believe it's a symtom of Pentile displays unfortunately.
Those blacks though. Those blacks!

When I use my friends iPhones or any 720p phones they look very grainy to me. Is it just me or is it because I have gotten used to the QHD display on my G3? I used to think the iPhone screen size was ok...now when I use it it's like a toy, and I have a hard time navigating the screen ?
Also whenever I use the S4 it definitely feels a little more grainy after you get used to the QHD panel. Is anyone else seeing those sideffects. I think my perception quality expectations is out of the roof now...makes me wonder how people claim that a iPhone PPI is more than enough ?

Same here, every smartphone I am looking at looks kinda grainy, it's hard to describe...
The display of my mother in laws Galaxy core something with it's 800x480 4,3" display looks like a crossword puzzle ☺

Frankly even some 720P phones make the iPhone look grainy, the iPhone is one of the lowest DPI phones you can still buy, it doesn't qualify as HD by any definition.

Yup my other phone is iphone 5 and its sh*t compered to g3 my mother huawei g300 that is just ridiculous

Agreed, even the 1080 phones look quite quite grainy. The sharpening and variable quality screens ruin the G3 display though.

I know it makes me think what the hell are the iPhone fans thinking when they say that 300 PPI is more than enough or 1080p is unnecessary. Even the New iPhone 6 4.7 and 5.5 inch models won't have FHD. Totally will look grainy for sure.

Lol I could spot every pixel on my vibrant with ease. It has a 800×480 resolution too and it's super amoled to make it worse lol

Well yeah, I'm just talking about graininess

Not just you, I also have a Moto X and that screen just screams of pixelation.

I'm starting to see old image assets showing their true low definition in apps, live wallpapers, games ect. Luckyily this isnt a 4k phone or it might be more noticable, as is things will only improve for 2k and 4k as time progresses. I can really tell text has lost the jagged edges it had with my old 720p phone which is nice.
Wanted to add it will be strange seeing mobile devices pushing uhd more than most, remember the image quality android and ois started with?

You sure you're not looking at the S4 with one of those plastic screen protectors on?

I use tempered glass. So does my other friend. The pentile matrix makes it more noticible.

Yeah they look perfectly fine bro.
Now what has me tripping is how can LG put a qhd resolution on the LG Stylus. That is such a 2010 resolution. I can't imagine what kind of PPi and grainy experience one would have.

When I say they look okay, I mean they look okay... Not fantastic or anything. I personally like the lg g3 display. It doesn't have that saturated look that Apple pushes with almost all of their displays.
It's more like a Eizo or Ben-q monitor. I guess you just have to work on them for period of time to appreciate it..
Some folks will dislike the output and some will make the necessary color adjustments to the device. I have colleagues who have looked at footage or hi res pictures on my device and they like the output..

The S4 and G2 displays are sti some very nice displays buddy. R2member they are still 1080p display.
With the galaxy s series phones you can calibrate the screen really good. On my issue is screen burn in.

The g2 to me is an okay display. The s4,wasn't something I cared for display wise. I still have my G2. I never noticed screen burn in with my g2
I tried using my calibrator on my g2 and I failed!!
When the new devices drop, it will be the same issues. The iPhone will have glue issues like they always. People will complain about the note 4 display until a few updates come out, and people will talk about the moto's radio more than anything else. The N6 will be buttery smooth , and that will be the sticking point for most with each particular device..
Power consumption concerning the higher end displays will be interesting with these devices..

LCD displays do in fact cure over time. They just like everything else typically take time to burn in.

Display comparison: OP3 vs. Note 4

I've been seen a lot of bashing going on regarding the OP3'd display, which is getting rather annoying.
I've put together a side-by-side comparing my OP3 to my Note 4.
Notes: The OP3 is using the screen protector out of the box, which is admittedly pretty garbage. The Note 4 also has a screen protector (plastic), but it's a premium brand.
Settings: The OP3 is at full brightness with the color temperature slider all the way to the right. The Note 4 is using AMOLED photo mode at full brightness. I took this photo with a Canon G7X and locked the color balance using a grey card. These photos are untouched, other than cropping and resizing slightly.
Can you tell which is which? Does one have more detail over the other?
OP3: Left
Samsung Galaxy Note 4: Right
I'd suggest looking at this photo on a calibrated monitor for better accuracy.
(I've included the original file to compare to).

I'd also like to add that critics are calling the OP3 display as the "worst display", while the Note 4 has one of the best in recent years.

Awesome man, thanks for this. The exaggerations of the media (one way or another) drive me nuts. This puts to rest my only concern.

The colors on the oneplus are way too over saturated. The skin tones look orange. This is nitpicking obviously. Oneplus said they're releasing an update anyways to address this issue so it won't be a problem. The note 4 has a better display doesn't change anything .
There's also a blue cast on the oneplus screen.

That screen banding in the blue sky on the OP3, is it something that came up in the photo or can you actually see it? Because colours slightly off I can take, but that is a big no

That's actually because of the screen protector. It also smears fingerprints really bad despite me cleaning it.

It may have been bias to yellow/orange/red because I had the color temperature cranked all the way to the right. Also, if you are viewing that image from a monitor that is not calibrated it will look bad (or at least much worse than in real life).
I asked my wife which looked better and she immediately picked the OP3. Ironically, citing it was sharper/more detailed and the colors are more natural.

While neither is very accurate, if I had to choose between the two then it'd be the OP3 for sure.
While over-saturated, the colors look more natural in comparison to the blueish tint that the Note 4 has which is particularly obvious on the whites.
As for the "worst screen" comment, all that bull started from the (admittedly honest) Anandtech review and a rather poor choice of words, especially as "worst" is actually a rather inaccurate word seeing as what they meant was that the calibration was the furthest off from "true-to-life" than any other screen.
To their credit, they were quick to mention that this was obviously BY DESIGN as in, OnePlus actually CHOSE to steer away from color accuracy in favor of more pleasing colors and also mentioned that OnePlus apparently targeted the NTSC color gamut instead of the more natural-looking sRGB.
That's also the part where they mentioned that OnePlus will be adding an sRGB option in the next OTA, at which point they'll re-evaluate that part of the review.
IMHO it is sad that an honest account of a critical reviewer was taken out of context and used from people that never even saw the phone up close to bash it.

I can understand why OnePlus calibrated this AMOLED display the way they did. Coming from the OnePlus 2's IPS LCD, they wanted to flex a bit with the OnePlus 3 and wow us in a similar manner as Samsung is always wowing users with their screens. Could you trade a Honda for a Lexus and not open her up a bit on the highway on the way home?
There are inevitably going to be people who like the punchy, poppy colors of the OnePlus 3 display and those who would prefer it to be more subdued and true-to-life. The admirable thing is that OnePlus is working on an update that will allow users to choose which they prefer. I think that's truly commendable.

Note 4 was a good display but not the best these days. I have Note 3,4,Nexus 6/6P, S7Edge. I find the OP3 is the closest to Note 3, it has same resolution. The colors are better on the OP3, the brightness better on Note3. I think some areas the OP3 is a bit washed out in the reds compare to Note 4. The Nexus 6p most neutral. S7Edge colors are bold. So I don't think OP3 has a bad display, it's better than Nexus 6, a bit better than Note 3 can't say it's better or worse really. So perhaps there are bad screens out there but I am lucky that mine is good overall.

I had a deep look at my coworker's OP3, after he updated to 3.2.1 with sRGB feature added.
Well, I think it is a very good display and I like it a lot better when in sRGB mode: much more natural colors, less "neon glow" effect.
That said, my colleague prefers the native color calibration so again it all comes down to personal preferences.

Note 4 has one of the best in recent years?
hell no. Both of them have yellowish tone and too over saturated. For me, high quality IPS is the best, for ex : sony Z4

It was rated as the most accurate display of it's time. This is not using Samsung display modes btw.

Do you happen to have an older phone by the way? Please compare it to that too and then convince us with your results that based on your comparison you came to the conclusion that this display is great. Jokes aside, compare it to a recent flagship not to something that was made 3 ywars ago.

Sure sure in your dreams may be. Nobody uses srgb mode anyways because whites are so yellow. But if you are that shallow person to just go by what a review said then go ahead stick to srgb lol

So what exactly are you doubting? That the sRGB mode on the OP3 isn't as accurate as professional equipment says it is, or that your eyes know what "real white" looks like?
I happen to calibrate multiple monitors using high end equipment, and to most people white looks "warm". The sRGB mode on the OP3 looks as accurate as any monitor I work on, so what's the problem?
And fortunately, professionals don't use eyes to determine color accuracy and white points, so this argument really is silly.

Professionals my arse. I don't care what "professionals" call white inside a lab. This is real life, not lab life. If you think those yellow whites are the real whites then you are due for an eyes appointment really soon. We are talking display quality here, not calibration quality. If you want to talk about display quality then compare it to 2016 devices, not to 2013 devices. Your Note 4 is too old, sorry.

So instruments which measure display color accuracy aren't to be trusted? In "real life" we generally don't allow subjective preference to override objective measurements.
I can't understand why anyone would be upset about this. If you don't prefer accurate whites then go with a display that gives cool whites instead.

5t screen resolution compared to today's flagships. Is it good enough?

Hello everyone.
In considering the Oneplus 5t as a replacement to my good old Samsung note 4, especially for the price compared to today's flashships.
One of the main factors when I chose any device is the screen quality. I understand the 5t scores really high in this sector, but I'm worried about the resolution and screen DPI.
My note 4 and all today's flagships have higher resolutions, and I'm wondering if anyone has compared the 5t screen with other devices and can notice any real difference in daily life, mainly while browsing pictures were pixels become more evident.
I considered the Note 8 and LG v30, but I really can't stand those curved edges, and I don't need a pen since I don't use the one on my note 4.

I upgraded from the Note 4 to the OP3T and then the 5T. My decision was based on easy root and Dev community. I cannot notice a significant difference in screen resolution (if you look at TV resolution guides you'll see that you need to be insanely close to the screen to notice on something as small as a phone). OnePlus allows you to manually adjust the DPI to suit your preference so you can have tiny icons and such. I love this phone compared to my Note 4. Way snappier and no slow down from TW.
I personally have never thought "this screen would be better if it was 4k". But Samsung's infinity display is definitely a better display if that is your only concern.

Since you had a note 4, how would you compare the screen with the 5t one? Would you consider the 5t an upgrade in terms of quality, color accuracy, brightness, watching angles etc?
Also, is the 5t camera overall an upgrade compared to the note 4?

Full disclosure I didn't use the camera on the Note 4 all that much, but looking through the pictures that I took with it the OP5T seems to take much better pictures. The portrait mode is also great to have.
As for the screen, I personally don't notice a difference in quality. Small text still has clearly defined edges that I can see. I don't use my phone for VR so I can't comment there. I really like the colors on the display and didn't notice any significant color difference between the two, but this is subjective. It is plenty bright and I think that might be an upgrade from the Note 4 as I seem to recall having to manually adjust the brightness to actually see it whenever I stepped outside and still having some issues. Viewing angles are also great with this phone. I don't have any color shift unless it's a pretty extreme angle.
The one thing the screen has going for it is it's size and lack of bezels, which I really love. Other than that I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a significant difference between the two unless you looked really closely or had special equipment. So not really an upgrade in screen quality, but definitely not a downgrade. The rest of the phone is a huge improvement though. Way faster to use and a much better update schedule.

Thanks . Such a reply is much better than any review on the net, as you gave real life experience.
I'm really satisfied with the Note 4 display, and if this isn't a downgrade, that's grade. Being with much less bezels and overall lighter is a huge plus too.

I'm a Note 4 to 3T and now 5T convert.
Updates aren't an issue with OP, they're doing a fine job now. If I had to complain, and I don't need to, it's the security updates are always behind.
I don't have the issues that a lot of others are having. I also don't have a lot of crap apps on my phone. 100% stock with dark theme, BT always on, brightness between half and 3/4 and I'm averaging 1.25 day of battery and 8hrs of SOT.
In regards to the screen, it's made by Samsung. I'm surprised at how easy it was to adjust to. Choose your preset or customize it and run with it.
Camera, hmm, it's good but not as good as the Note 4 in low lighting. Once you get to know how to use the camera, other pics come out quite nicely. Most of the pics I take are of circuit boards and car parts.
Audio, unfortunately I'm hearing impaired so I try not to comment on it. I will say that it seems like every other update the volume output changes either up or down. I notice this when I'm connected via BT to my cars radio.
I can't walk and chew gum so I'm not a VR user.

Hellz yeah it is. It's excellent and it's even better than some QHD displays out there like the G6.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the screen resolution, it's fine, honest. On the plus side, the HD+ screen means the GPU has less pixels to push around.
My best advice would be to compare it side by side with other devices in the flesh if you can, that way you can see if you like the colour tone of the screen. I've spent several years using a succession of cheap devices bought directly from China. All of them have had LCD screens rather than AMOLED. I'm finding it very hard to get used to the screen because it looks so yellow whenever looking at anything white. If you want accurate colours (reds and blues accurate) you need to have the screen set to sRGB or DCI P3 and with either of those options whites look very yellow indeed. I've compared my phone to two other 5ts now and they have all been the same. I think I'm gradually getting used to it, but I've had to set the screen colour to 'custom' and as cool possible to get anywhere close to acceptable whites. The downside of this is it comes with very oversaturated reds. When comparing the 5t to the panels on the S8+ and Note, they seem whiter and generally a better panel.
Having said all this, I'm happy with the device in most ways and the resolution is basically fine for me.

I actually find that the Samsung panels that I've been looking at (S8/Note 8/S7) have been generally the same as the 5T as far as whites go (very good), but the S8/Note 8 tends to have reddish whites and the S7 had a greenish white. The 5T was much better.

That's interesting, I wonder if the type of lighting makes a difference? In the shop where I compared them my eyes honestly thought the Samsungs had more pop AND better colours. Their whites were closest to the LCD screen on my old Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. I also felt that the middle range Samsung's had all the same 'issues' as my 5t, i.e. a bit yellow when displaying white backgrounds, and very over saturated reds that look almost scarlet or florescent. I guess it must come down to what each person is used to and how they perceive colour? I'm gradually getting used to the 5t and I really like how it looks when playing a game. Doom 3 looks really lovely on it

I think there are a lot of factors going on. Lighting, personal perception, etc.

I went from the original Oneplus One to the Nexus 6P and now to the 5T. At first, I was also a bit worried that the display on the 5T would be less sharp compared to the 6P, due to the difference in DPI. But when I got the 5T, I could hardly tell the difference. The display was just as good and even brighter and vivid.

Although OP5T screen is beautiful perfect, But if screen is still a concern, LG V30 is a way to go.
I guess only difference is resolution...Pixel counts.

Uhm, no.
The V30 has one of the worst screens of all current (flagship) phones.
The one in the 5T is way, way better.

In direct comparison with the S8 I can tell the difference. But its not to great. Colors and everything else are really similar. Unless you use it for VR its very ok in my opinion.

Can confirm. Had a pixel 2 xl for a few weeks (same LG POLED panel). Brightness uniformity is horrible and whites are very grainy. Don't miss anything about that display.

S20( /+/Ultra) OLED - bad uniformity, too bright dark grays, green tint

The attached picture of my display was made by zooming into the (uniform) 5% gray picture in a dark room with 25% brightness using an S10+. It is rather horrible and badly visible in normal usage.
Is anybody here expierencing the same issue? Please feel free to head over there, also, if it is not an Ultra.

I have this problem too. I'm on my second S20+ now and it has problems too. I'll return both. It sucks.

That is really unfortunate. Thinking about trying another S20+ - but I think we should probably wait for later batches. I am also hoping for software optimizations, as it is better at 60Hz - but usually, nothing can be done about it.

How do you test for this ?

For me, I did not need to test for it, as I noticed it right away the first time using it in a dark environment.

I also had a bad uneven grey on my 512GB Ultra. Swapped for the S20+ and it's basically perfect. Good luck on the OLED lottery.

Mine does not have this problem. Is related to where the phone is marked for distribution? I'm on a US/Verizon handset.

Mine is also a US version. On ATT. Its just an OLED panel thing. Samsung used to have this issue a lot back in the S6 through S8. From S9 and Note 7 and on screens were great. I think with the new 120HZ screens the uniformity issues came back.

I think so too. S8 was really bad. S9 and S10 were great. S20 is bad again.

Exactly. Gotta be the 120hz thing.
If anyone has a really bad grey screenor not uniform. Return and reorder. Samsung customer care won't understand the issue so might as well just order a new one and hope you get a better one like I did.

should I be worried if my whole screen is green when showing this 5% picture in dark room? upper part of the screen seems to be slightly brighter green - it is my first samsung and I cannot find anywhere how ''good'' oled 5% should look like...

My opinion: Of you need the picture to see it and do not notice it or if it does not bug you, you are fine. If the display is uniform, whatever it is like, I think it is ok.

I have the same issue, S20+ 5G Exynos

So how do you test this again? Using a dark grey picture with the brightness set to 5%?
ETA: NM, I read that wrong. I downloaded the image and tried it at 25% brightness. I'm not seeing the same thing? Is it meant to be dramatic to be able to notice if it's a bad panel? I'm seeing a normal display?

On number 5 I can say that it is finally bearable. It was manufactured on the second of march. I did not check with the rest. I only opened them, handled them delicately and checked them. All were terrible.
