HTC to switch from AMOLED to STFT due to shortages

this could be a rumour but if true, I'm going to be a lot more careful with my desire.

I heard this as well. How will this affect battery life and do they look anywhere near as good?

LCDs these days are almost as good as AMOLED. Note that I said almost. I don't think anything can compare to an AMOLED or SuperAMOLED in regular inside environments, but when you get outside and the sun is shining, it's almost as if the screen isn't on. I have to put the brightness all of the way up to see the screen. LCDs don't have that problem. So If you don't know which you have in a new phone, you probably wont be able to tell unless you're outside! muahaha.

Hmm. I'm glad I already have the Desire...
As far as I know, AMOLED gives better viewing angles, has better colors and is better for battery life (which is a pain on Android phones).

Also, an AMOLED is better than LCD for showing true black or darker shades due to the lack of a backlight which is in LCD screens

Maybe this will finally prevent the pinkish issue on some HTC AMOLED devices.

Well, Sony's TFTs shouldn't have PenTile, which should make text sharper and really ought to get rid of the pink tint. It's a trade-off; personally I'd rather have TFT with RGB subpixels, but it seems to be a minority opinion.

according to engadget, they say the Iphone 4 screen is better then the Galaxy S Super ALMOLED.
Even though I hate Iphone I must admit, the screen does look good.

The screen could be good, but i don't understand why apple did't made the screen bigger.

Iphone 4 screen is awesome, nice colours & perfectly viewable from a variety of angles. Pin sharp & very very clear. But its a bit too small for my liking.

Doesn't the iphone use ips technology or is that the same as super lcd (because this is the first time i hear of super lcd)

Agree 100% (love AMOLED, but hate PenTile). If someone ever offer me to change my Desire to normal LCD Desire i would be over the moon. I hope HTC will make ones. Maybe, just one for me

What the Engadget article really showed was that in NORMAL use there was no discernible advantage to the iPhone 4 screen.
Being the Apple shills that they are they resorted to the retarded microscope comparisons. IF you have to show what the pixels look like under a microscope to get what the difference is then there's no difference.

The color white...

Has anyone else noticed that the ET4G's screen isn't that great when it comes to the color white?
When compared to my Evo4G,
pictures and video - ET4G wins - main colors are "colors"
websites with white backgrounds, pdfs etc - Evo4G wins
To me it looks like the white just isn't as bright, kind of like how the Evo's black isn't as black as the ET4G's black... if that makes any sense.
Is it just my eyes or my device?
ps I love this thing, not trolling, just trying to figure out if this is just me

Par for the course on SAMOLED screens. On SAMOLED vs. LCD, blacks are better but whites are worse, generally speaking.

I only notice it with my brightness turned down. Looks better at dull brightness (of course)

That is kinda a thing, yes. Though I have seen some very abused (S)AMOLED(+) screens and a couple unlucky new ones where the white isn't white and just sucks. That's what you call a bad screen.
the "O" in SAMOLED+ stands for "organic" and over time these organics do degrade faster than your average LCD. They have a type of compensation built into the circuitry to accommodate for this, but, in the limited amount of time most people have a phone they shouldn't notice it...though there are also bad screens that deteriorate rapidly and some that even burn in.
So, yes, AMOLED technology isn't known for having the whitest whites but they should still be bright white, if not you may either have a bad screen or a fantastic eye....hope for a bad screen cuz you can replace that, but a very good eye for these things may drive you fncking crazy.

samoled screens are like that.... yellowish tint for whites but the blacks are BLACK.

I'll see if I can get a good picture comparing it to the Evo. The site I really noticed it on was slashdot. Looks like crap on the epic compared to the evo

Then something might be wrong. Slashdot is my homepage and I've been going there since...I can't even remember when, over 10 years...12?
Either way, I know that color scheme like the back of my hand. I see it in my sleep. It has been my homepage for 10 years now. I've seen it on everything from a smart phone to projected on the side of my neighbors white house....Slashdot should look normal.
I'd investigate further if I were you.

The whites are fine. I believe your eyes are playing tricks on you. The blacks being so deep give it somewhat a darker tint to the whites, but in truth, it's there.

The whites are good on the SAMOLED+ screens. Just because they a brighter on another screen doesn't mean anything. Personally, super strong white would bug my eyes after a while.

I have a 'Mel Gibson' type "Conspiracy Theory" about this whole issue....
I think that Samsung, though they use exactly the same sourcecode as all the other manufacturers, might simply insert a piece of code that inverts the colors that they want, at a certain time.
For example:
Every other phone on the planet has no problem producing a vibrant "white" color....
Every other phone on the planet has a REAL problem producing a vibrant "black" color.
Samsung basically 'flip-flops" this, and I wonder if it's not just a well-placed piece of "inversion" code....
The results would be incredible blacks, and so-so whites...
Does anyone understand what I'm getting at, and care to comment?

Sht I thought that I was only one on xda that has yellow tint problem.
Its not just our Epics,tmobile gs2 and nexus prime have same problem.
And no-they are not supposed to be like that!
I looked at epic touch at sprint store and their epic was cool temperature white not like mine which is straight yellowish-orange.
I bought mine on amazon and im on my second return.My second phone was litle better but still orange-yellow compared to one at sprint store or my old Epic 1.
To sum this up:
Whoever has yellow tint on their epic touch or other galaxy s2 variants-they have defective phone.And its gonna get worse because in amoled screens blue colors deteriorate quicker than reast,so if your phone is yellowish now it will be red in a year or two,lol.
Its better to get a phone with bluish tint because overtime it will go away,while yellow will only get worse.

What's the contrast ratio of our phones? I did a search but all that was said is that "it's high", didn't give exact numbers.
That being said is there a color calibration app, much like one's for tv's & pc monitors, that can be used on our smartphones?

Yeah there is an app in market check my other thread for the name.It want fix yellow tint issue but will make it better.

I know others won't agree with me here but, this is a $650+tax phone.
A phone of this price deserves a perfect screen.
Look at iphone 4 / 4s. Sure the screens are small but there are NO ISSUES WHAT SO EVER. The IPS they use is basically perfect.
Ever since I got my Galaxy Nexus, I have had concerns regarding the screen:
1) It kills too much battery. Battery settings show it killing 50 - 70% of the battery WITH AUTO BRIGHTNESS ON.
2) There are LINES EVERYWHERE. The whole screen is very grainy unless the brightness is very high. But then it's too bright (especially for low light reading) and it will probably kill 80%+ of the battery....
3) Pentile matrix. Sorry to say but it's very noticeable. This is especially true for text that is white or red.

However, the lines / grainy textures everywhere is just unacceptable. I could even live with the grainy texture but there are a few vertical lines that are VERY noticeable.
Should I get mine exchanged ?? I'm just afraid that the replacement may be worse....

they are all kinda like this. Some worse than others. I just don't mind it as much. What is killing me is the camera...it is so bad...

Honestly, I don't see the graininess,even with this antiglare screen protector I have on.

Just about every new phone has the same two complaints... Battery and screen. Not that you don't have a valid complaint, I've noticed it too. I just don't think you are going to find that perfect balance in a phone.

I'm using the SGP oleophobic atm.
What really bothers me is the Vertical lines...
Try this. Set your background as a solid dark grey color. I guarantee you will see the imperfections.

The definition of 720p is based on pixel arrangement, NOT subpixel arrangement. it is a 1280x720 screen. By your definition, a 720p/1080p screen is only true if it is an RGB subpixel arrangement. So you would also say that the Sharp Aquos Quattron TVs that have a yellow subpixel are more than 1080p.
If you expected the equivalent of a current generation plasma screen shrunk down to a 4.65" screen in a phone, that's just unreasonable. Its the first iteration of this tech. Lines and grainy screens are AMOLED's version of lasting burn-in and high power consumption on plasma.
Also, everyone references the iPhone. Why? The colors are inaccurate and undersaturated, and the contrast is too high. It is NOT a calibrated IPS panel. Name-dropping IPS technology means nothing.

They are all like that.. it's a flaw of the pentile matrix that they used to build the screen.
auto-brightness makes it worse.
What's the point in setting up a scenario to expose the flaws that exist in every (gnex) screen?
Most people's use-cases won't involve that scenario and they'll be able to enjoy the screen without a problem except for battery life, but battery life is always going to be a problem for a display larger than 4".
In my day to day use of looking at things other than dark gray backgrounds and solid color fields, the screen looks fantastic and has one of the highest pixel densities of any phone display out there. (Nitro HD, Rezound, LG's 720p screen phone and iPhone 4/4S have slightly higher pixel densities.. but they're all a cut above most other phones available)

ok the wife and i upgraded at the same time...........i chose the GN she chose the iphone 4s.
and honestly i would be gutted if i had chosen the 4s !!! ive worked a lot with the sg2 and for me the screen is too 'in your face' colours are vivid...the GN screen has a great balance.........and well going from the from the GN to the 4s ..........jeez the 4s is tiny

That first point drives me crazy. It's a percentage of battery use, do you get that? It means that if the phone uses almost no power except a little when the screen is on, then the display will be using most of the battery.
What you WANT is that. The worst is when cell standby eats up all the battery. That means it's draining just sitting on the table.

OK fair enough.

People have been *****ing and complaining about this phone not coming out fast enough for months now. Now that it's out people are logging in here to ***** about it not being perfect.
All I can say is that some people are creating a lot of needless suffering for themselves. At least keep it to yourself if you are going to go through life with that kind of an attitude.
If 14 year old me could have seen this phone in 1991 his head would have exploded.

I'm not an expert, but I just sold my Bionic and got the G. Nexus. The pentile on the Bionic drove me NUTS, but I LOVE this screen. I don't see ANY screen door effect, and I have loaded a few HD Videos on it and watching them is GORGEOUS. The colors are amazing and blacks are better then my 55" Samsung LED with an 8 million:1 contrast ratio. My roommate has the iPhone 4, and his draw dropped at this screen, and we held it right next to the iPhone 4. Only complaint is video recording is shaky, glad they are adding video stabilization in 4.0.3. OH, and I looked at my battery usage and the display is 68%. I bought the 2100mAh battery (for 25 bux, and barely any size change why not) and am getting a good 8-9 hours with a lot of use out of it which is about what I got on my Bionic with the 2760mAh extended battery. So maybe the screen is just by far, the most power intensive component, hence the high percentage of battery use. Anyway, this phone, like all others, could use improvements in some areas, but I absolutely LOVE it. And am SO GLAD to be rid of my Bionic (GOOD RIDDANCE)

I never complained about it not being out lol. Hell I didn't even line up, just pre-ordered online and waited patiently....
It's just that: THE VERTICAL LINES...It's worse than the graininess part. These lines should not be here on a $650 phone is really my biggest complaint.
Honestly, it's just a matter of quality control. Some phones are worse than others ??? Well that just proves that it's the QC.
I hope Samsung ups their quality control so people don't get stuck with these visible lines on their $650 phones.

If you can notice anything to do with pentile matrix then you definitely have magnifying lenses for eyes.

Which is why I call this thread bullcrap. I'm not trying to be some android shrill, but telltale signs like "iPhone is perfect" and "I can tell its pentile" stand out.
No, you can't tell it's pentile (no one has been able to and I doubt he's placed his screen under a microscope).
Maybe you should have bought the iPhone 4 instead.

I thought it was obvious this person is an apple troll. C'mon. Iphone being better with it's 3.5" screen being compared to a true hd amoled that is first gen. Makes the iphone better? Please. Also, you knew you were buying into an early adoption on all kinds of fronts. Get a blackberry and be done with it.

The camera on this Nexus is crazy amazing compared to my previous Thunderbolt! The quality of the pictures is about the same but I can now snap pictures, with flash, almost as fast as I can press the button. On the Thunderbolt it is one picture every 5 seconds or so. Amazing!

Pentile Display ?

it is said that the galaxy nexus uses the pentile display .. and all we know that pentile isn't really good .. so i am going to buy a nexus tonight and i would to ask you if the screen good or bad .. do you like it or not ?

I've had numerous phones, GS2, iPhone 4...this is the best screen I've seen yet.
The Pentile discussion is kind of ridiculous.

I've had four phones this year
- Vibrant
- My touch
- Nexus S
- Evo 3d
When compared to everything else including my friends' iPhone this is the best display I have ever used.

Its crazy good, by far the best screen on any device I've ever seen, blacks are so black u can't tell where the phone ends and the screen begins without looking really close. Also u can load up pretty much any page in portrait view with far away zoom and STILL read the really really fine text just fine.

Pixelation is noticeable on text. While that is all true the screen isn't that bad, passable at least while playing games or watching videos. Is it the BEST screen ever? I would say no.

Sweetheart, you do know that the screen cannot have blue tinge and linen yellow whites at the same time right? Light cannot work like that. And pixelation is noticable on text? Are you insane? Have you seen the screen?

Calm down there Nexus fan boy/girl! I'm just stating these are things people have seen. Obviously not saying the blue tinge along w/ the yellow whites occur at the same time. Yes I have seen the screen numerous times, and a co-worker was the one to tell me about the yellowish whites.

Pentile on the original SGS/NexusS wasn't nearly what it is on this Galaxy Nexus. Last night I spent about an hour comparing and contrasting between his iPhone4s and my brand new Galaxy Nexus. When it came down to it, the Galaxy Nexus had the same readability as the vaunted Retina display, but with deeper blacks, and generally more vibrant (ermm, oversaturated) colors. Looks great to me, but people have different preferences.

i've had the moto droid, moto atrix, htc thunderbolt, iphone4, and this is by far the nicest screen ive ever had.

Pixelation is noticeable on text. While that is all true the screen isn't that bad, passable at least while playing games or watching videos. Is it the BEST screen ever? I would say no.

Are you just quoting other posts or do you actually have a GN? If so does the screen look yellow, blue, or pixelated to you? If it does I would return it ASAP because it shouldn't. Mine and the ones I've played with in the store do not.

Pentile? What Pentile?
In my experience, the pentile isn't an issue. The screen is (theoretically) gorgeous, however (and maybe I'm an exception), I've seen that only about 1 in 3 GNexi have a screen that truly looks like it's supposed to. I'm on my third GNex, two of the three have had different screen issues, and the third had a great display but a blown earpiece
That being said, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one, just be sure to THOROUGHLY inspect it before you leave the store. I'm going back for my fourth today.

My co-workers device's screen white's looked yellow. I went into the store to mess around w/ the device and did notice the same on those units. There have been others stating there is a blue tinge, which is supposedly a normal thing, as to preserve the blue pixel. The screen has minor pixelation but it's not too noticeable like the Moto devices.

You must have microscope eyes then. I can't see any pixelation holding device from one palm far from my eyes.

I do have very good vision yes.

No pixelation that I can see, and I use a lot of different types of high res screens for work. I'm really not sure how anyone can say they see pixelation on such a high density display. Take a look at the 'unlock' circle on the lock screen. You have to look realllly hard to see the jagidness - and this is a circle drawn with square pixels
Colours are slightly over saturated which makes them pop more, however they are not technically accurate - if you care. Eg. look at a photograph from a SLR camera on the gn vs a high quality computer screen.
The only real issue I see is the artefacts (grey 'dirty' look of white backgrounds) on the 2 or 3 lowest brightness settings. This is slightly annoying because you need to leave auto brightness on to preserve battery. You can however use a custom rom to change the lowest limit of brightness.
Trust me, when you turn it on, you'll think the 'google' logo that comes up is actually a sticker on the screen, and when the startup animation starts you'll fall off your chair

I will say that I can notice some pixelization of text, primarily on colored text (reds, blues, purples, etc. are the worst offenders), although that's not to say it's terribly pixelated, but it is noticeable if you know what you're looking for. Certainly nothing to dismiss the phone for, but to say it's not visible is untrue.

i can see it's pentile (having had a nexus one I know how it looks) but it's not much of a problem, the resolution is high enough. Sure it would be nicer if it was RGB, but it's good enough for me, at least (and I hated my N1's screen)

Agreed. To each their own when it comes to displays! I'm not bashing on the display at all, just stating what I have seen.

I agree. Overall I like the display better than my iphone 4, but it does have flaws, and I think the sharpness of the apple retina is better. Still, the blacks are to die for, and I like a little more punch to my colors since I'm not going to be doing any color-sensitive work on a phone. Plus, the size on the GN is juuuuust right.
Though I have to disagree with the poster that said the opening animation looks incredible. I was actually severely disappointed that they chose such a low res animation to "showcase" the HD super amoled display. It should be in native res, but it obviously isn't. That said, it would probably slow down the boot process considerably if that were the case, so it's just fine the way it is.

PenTile, yes. Excellent quality, also yes.
Unless you are a photographer, the colours shouldn't matter that much to you - white is still pretty white, and black is very black, and everything inbetween is pretty damn good too.
Those complaining about pixelation on the screen...well, to be honest, I can see pixels on my PC monitor, and it's a fancy-shmancy 1080p 120Hz 3D monster. I can see pixels on a Retina display. Pixels are everywhere.

Samsung & PenTile Displays

So I see lots of threads/posts about PenTile. Found this to be interesting, sharing it. It's mainly in regards to Samsung Galaxy S3 but as we know, Galaxy Nexus uses PenTile as well. So it would apply for our phones as well.
Samsung's Philip Berne explained to me that the blue subpixels on AMOLED displays actually degrade the fastest - quicker than the red or green subpixels. With a PenTile layout, the subpixels are arranged RGBG (red, green, blue, green), so they feature more green subpixels and fewer red or blue subpixels than an RGB stripe layout with the same resolution. Because of this, AMOLED displays that have the PenTile layout tend to have a longer lifespan than those with RGB layouts. Since Samsung is selling its phones to users that usually keep them for 18 months or longer, it has to be sure that the display will still offer peak performance at that time. According to the company, PenTile AMOLED displays have proven to be more reliable than those with RGB layouts.

Thanks. Saw a few links to this. I don't really see what the issue is with PenTile. In normal use, its next to impossibile to see.
I think what people have bigger issues with are banding/discoloring/streaking, not necessarily the PenTile arrangement. Its just a nice 1-word "catch all" for not liking a display.

Motorola gave PenTile a bad name using rbgw arrangements. Now everyone assumes they will get screendoor effects.

The RAZR coming out ~same time as the Nexus with that god-awful display definitely gave a negative connotation to "PenTile".

Pentile was somewhat noticeable on the first SAMOLED display that they had in the SGS lineup, but only when it was text on a solid background. With SAMOLED HD, the pixel density is so high that I have yet to be able to see a jagged edge on text anywhere. I wonder what people would think if Apple used a Pentile matrix on an iProduct. Probably be the best thing in display technology rather than the most hated if it happened.

I love my galaxy nexus and my friend got a htc one x and it does look really good but I prefer my nexus maybe cause I like dark colors

Yeah I agree with Motorola giving PenTile a bad name. When I first saw the Galaxy Nexus screen, I didn't even notice any differences. I don't know the technical terms on why it's different but compared to my previous phones, Nexus S / Galaxy S1 (Vibrant).. I don't really see any difference, in fact the GN looks even better but that might just be Super AMOLED HD. But whatever it is, it looks amazing.
The people criticizing about PenTile without even looking at the phone or trying it for a week or two need to re-evaluate themselves.

Ya, but Samsung still has not found a good enough manufacturing process to make regular "Super AMOLED+ HD" Screens at 4.6inch+ (hence the pen tile). That's why the screen's pen tile.

Y'know, I always thought that PenTile would bother me too much to ever use a phone. I'd seen some devices that used older or low-end versions of it, and they looked terrible.
I was apprehensive at best of getting the Galaxy Nexus. PenTile and the lack of an SD card slot bothered me, to say the least. Over time, I've grown to love the phone. Much of that is because while there are some issues with the PenTile display, such as some banding and purplish greys at very low or lowest brightness settings, these issues aren't noticed even at a slightly raised brightness settings. Otherwise, the display is one of the best performing displays I've ever had the pleasure of using. The colors are bright and vibrant, the blacks are black, there are no light bleeds common with backlit displays and the outdoor performance, while not the best, is still excellent.
Super AMOLED HD isn't perfect, but it's certainly a good step forward in the evolution of display technology.

When I was looking at new phones, Pentile bugged the hell out of me every time I saw it. I swore I'd never buy a phone that used it. After Google started selling the Galaxy Nexus, I took a look at the VZW model just for kicks, and I honestly couldn't tell the difference unless I held it point-blank.

Owning both devices, I actually prefer the one X screen over the nexus. Not by
a drastic margin though. Pentile displays are pretty atrocious on smaller resolution
screens (qhD or below).
It's a non-issue on the nexus.

I can tell occasionally but the high Res far outweighs the small nuance of seeing it in certain situations and being HD it still looks great. :thumbup::thumbup: for HD rgbg pen tile.

I thought the issues of the blue sub-pixels degrading faster than the red and green ones had been, basically, sorted - at least in as much that the degradation, whilst still faster than the other sub-pixels, was now slow enough that it was not particularly perceptible over the lifespan of the device (at least for the likes of phones, which are replaced much quicker than most consumer electronics devices).
I mean, according to Wikipedia the typical time for blue sub-pixels to degrade to half their original brightness is 14,000 hours - or 8 hours a day for 5 years.
Now I don't know about the rest of you but I don't have my handset's screen on for anywhere near 8 hours a day nor do I expect to still be using it in 5 years time.
And on top of that, it talks about 'experimental' blue OLED panels which can sustain 400 cd/m2 for over 62,000 hours - and that was in 2007.

Wrong. Galaxy tab 7.7 . If Samsung put samoled HD plus in sgs3 the price for the phone would be too damn high and the difference between screens quality is not that big as people who haven't even used it or used sgs1 with small resolution are trying to tell.

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is using a SAMOLED+ screen that is ~7". It is not a SAMOLED HD screen despite having an HD resolution. At least they do not advertise it as SAMOLED HD, it is listed as an HD resolution SAMOLED+ display.

When the g nex first came out all I say was the horrible screen. So I bought the t mo gs2 which had the ugliest screen resolution ever so I got a nexus. The screen on the phone is awesome dark blacks deep colors this is a great screen. The super LCD 2 is nice but I prefer this

Bingo. I think Samsung is just trying to get the most value out of their current process-level.
The panel in my (oft mentioned) ET4G SGS2 is roughly the same exact dimensions as the GNex screen....though if you multiply 800x640x12 (subpixels) you come up with the same exact number you would if you multiplied 1280x720x5 .....and that 5 is where the damning "Pentile" moniker comes from.
So, that means these two (oft compared) panels have the same amount of subpixels arranged in the same amount of space in a slightly (or vastly, depending on how you looked at it) configuration.
So, for solid colors--aside from calibration differences and luminance (brightness) differences--the panels are effectively identical. I know I simplified a lot of the dynamics away with those qualifications, but, in this scenario we have the same amount of subpixels in the same exact density making the same exact color...
Before I decided to swap up to the GNex I marched down to the Sprint store and did the nerdiest side-by-side comparison I could and there wasn't a single moment where I had any question which screen I'd rather be looking at all the time....It's the GNex. The only thing I noticed was that it wasn't as cornea scarringly bright....big deal....after 30 seconds of screen-on maxed out the SGS2 screen turns itself down to prevent damage or something.....and then it's dimmer than the GNex anyway.

Apple is anal. They do alot more testing than Samsung because people will actually use + buy there phones well past its 18 month life span.
