[Q] Questions regarding nh7 modem/radio - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I've been reading around lately and it seems that there is a new modem/radio (excuse my improper use of the terminology) released called NH7. I believe I am running NB4 and apparently NH7 is more stable and improves signal related issues. My questions are: how do I flash the modem/radio, should I flash the modem/radio, and if I do flash the modem is there any way to restore it back to my old one if anything goes wrong?

If rooted you install new modem and if you don't like it you can go back to your old modem while using Odin on your PC.
Pp.

Remember the modem is actually two parts. The gsm modem (modem.bin) can be flashed in Odin and if you don't like it you can flash the old one back. The LTE modem ( non-hlos.bin) is tied to the boot loader and once you update you can't go back. Mismatched boot loader and LTE modem causes assorted sound/WiFi etc woes.

mdl update

hi guys. my question is should my baseband be MDL for a MDL rom? I never did the tmo software update to MDL but rooted and started flashing right out of the box. For the most part I've had pretty good luck flashing roms but I see most roms are MDL which Im still on the original MDB baseband even after flashing several MDL roms. My baseband stays the same. Off topic I noticed my system settings about phone does not show what modem I'm on. I'm confused if I were to flash (haven't looked into in yet) a new modem. How would I know which modem I'm on? I feel like I should be on a MDL baseband but am skeptical about the difficulties regarding root. Anyways is it possible to flash a new baseband like I would a modem or kernel? Or should I just odin a MDL stock rom with root injected? Then start from there? I had trouble getting root and a recovery on my friends phone that had the update so I used odin to go back to MDB because that was the easiest solution for me at the time. Silly question but is the modem and baseband related in any way? I guess what I'm asking is what do you guys recommend? Are you still on MDB like me? Or is MDL a must?

If you started flashing custom stuff back when MDB was the latest update; and you haven't manually updated your baseband... then no, you should still be on the previous baseband. Also, your modem should be what your baseband is.. MDB. I know that if you flash ROMs in CWM/TWRP you aren't getting the modem/baseband. If you just want to flash a new baseband/modem, check this thread out. I will say though, unless you are experiencing problems with the MDB modems, there's no real reason to go changing it.

Will flashing 4.1.2 Stock Rom on N7105 mess the IMEI?

Hi all,
I'm planning to flash my phone back to 4.1.1 via Odin and then to to 4.1.2 firmware, found on Sammobile to carry out the unlock method.
However, I am on the DMF2 baseband, and have heard that flashing a new modem over this will mess up the IMEI.
Will this happen if I'm only flashing a stock rom over it?
Thanks in advance!
I used to flash 4.1.1 stock ROMs onto my N7100 from 4.1.2
I would go into a bootloop after flashing it but booting to recovery and wiping data and cache solved my problem. Just backup your EFS to be on the safe side though

flashing new modem will not mess up IMEI.
but to be safe, back up your EFS before you do.
Normally IMEI will be messed up if EFS corrupted during the flashing.
Most of the time, it will happened if you change ROM with different base version (and normally happened when you never read the instructions of the OP very well).
So, when you want to downgrade, please do backup your EFS first (especially if you are coming from 4.3, due to different bootloader/partition of internal storage).

Upgrading SGH-T999 from 4.1.2 to 4.3 advice

SpellingHello,
I rooted my 4.1.2 SGH-T999 by CWM , then unlocked it by downgrading the modem , unlocking and then upgrading to 4.1.2 .
When I checked for OTA updates the phone says" my device has been modified. software updates are not available. "
How can I get back the option of getting the OTA updates? If so, will I lose root? And also while I am on 4.1.2 is there any things else I can do that are simpler to do than when on 4.3?
Thank you.
May I suggest first reading up on the serious issues caused by accepting OTA updates. If you still really wish to go down that path, then use Odin to go back to stock before accepting OTA.
Flash the stockmod rom.

I guess since the phone is out of warranty and kind of old, it probably won't get that many updates in the future. In that case, I can leave everything as is.
With the configuration I have now: Unlocked at 4.1.2 , CWM 5.5.0.4, how do I update the phone to the latest one available on this site? Do I use odin ( PDA and which flags ) , or load it in SD card and run it from recovery? Doing either one, do I lose root or not, and how to get it rooted again, same way I did it the first time.?
Thank you guys for your assistance , this is the first time ever I am making changes to a phone.
StockMod Rom comes as a Zip. Put it on SD card and Flash via CWM. That's not CWM's latest version.
So if you keep getting errors (Status 7) while trying to flash, then you will need to update CWM.
Latest is 6.0.4.5 over here. Alternately, get Rom Manager to update as well.

Would I lose unlocked if I flash the modem and use Stockmod or Stockmod Custom ROMs?
Do these ROMs come with WiFi tethering?
I am slowly learning, Installed ROM manager from AP store, and updated the CWM to the latest..
I have to flash the modem first, should I reboot then Flash Stockmod or do both one after the other?
Thanks.
I believe StockMod will support WiFi Calling. You will have to try and find out. As to the Modem, you can flash both one after the other and that's fine. When it comes to modems, I personally reboot after a modem flash to see how the signal is like.
Sometimes, some of the modem don't work well in my geographical area. If the modem is a precursor to the Rom, then I'd flash the modem, then check and then flash the rom. After Rom is up and running, I may go back to original modem.

The reason I asked is because on the development page where the Stockmod is , it says to " Flash T999UVUEMJC Modem
Flash ROM , Reboot and Enjoy "
My other question was about sim unlocked. I downgraded modem, did the unlocked routine, upgraded back to 4.1.2 modem. Now if I flash modem and ROM, would the SIM Unlocked status stay or I have to unlock all over. The whole reason I got here was to unlock and root for WiFi hotspot.
Thank you again for walking me through this.
The phone will stay unlocked despite change of modem or Rom. You can try flashing the rom directly without the modem. I don't think there may be issues. Of course you can flash modem if it didn't work. Put the modem on your external sd when you download Rom.

It doesn't matter.. But you do need the new modem or you won't pick up signal on 4.3

[Modem][Baseband]4.4.2 Modems for I747/I747M

WARNING!!!!
Do not flash a 4.4.2 modem if you are running 4.3 firmware (bootloaders)!!!!
This will cause a permanent hard-brick!!! There is no fix!!!
The only reason anyone should need to flash one of these is if they had flashed a 4.3 or earlier modem for whatever reason. Once updated to 4.4.2 firmware, ONLY that matching modem will work. Flashing anything else will result in no signal and most likely an "Unknown" baseband and IMEI. If you flashed an older modem, you will need to flash back to the 4.4.2 one and these will all come back.
This has happened a number of times already, and continues to happen still. So I figured I would put them in a separate thread to make them easier to find.
Flash from the recovery of your choice, or Mobile Odin. The updater-script for these includes an assert that should prevent flashing on anything that does not have the correct bootloader.
Full Disclosure: I do not have an I747 or I747M, and as such, I am unable to test any of these. I have full confidence they will work as expected though. (I have been doing the modems for the T999 for a couple of years now). Still, you should know they are currently untested.

These modems will only work if you have updated to the latest 4.4.2 base firmware and bootloaders. The ROM you are running is irrelevant. If everything is currently working, you have no need for these.
I need this files to repair Unknow baseband and IMEI null in my I747M VLUFNE6 4.4.2
Another link please.. this link dont work..
when i try to unlock the phone with NSPro, Unknow baseband and IMEI null in my I747M VLUFNE6 4.4.2.. i nedd moden firmware of my version but i can´t donload..

Which one? There are 3 NE6 modems posted. (Any would probably work seeing as they appear to be identical)
And did you try any of the afh mirrors?
OP Updated!!!
OP Updated!
As requested, I have added the latest I747M, NH2 modems for the Canadian carriers that received this update.
Hello Doc, I have an issue trying to upload the modem on my sgh i747 because when I downloaded the CWM modem gives me Error 7 and dont let me upload the modem actually I have I747UCUEMJB and 4.4.4 slimkat, but my bigger problem is the imei, baseband null. helpme please all the night I wastryng many solutions and I am so tired now.. thanks
You probably never updated your firmware to 4.4.2.
To know for sure open terminal emulator and enter this.
getprop ro.bootloader
If it says MJB, you haven't updated your firmware yet and flashing this modem would permanently break your phone. If it is MJB, flash the same firmware via Odin and factory reset. That often fixes the imei problem. If it does not, pm me for further help with it. Can't post those instructions here.

Thanks for keeping the support for this phone going. I have the latest bootloader ..uemk5 for my Rogers sghI747m.
I tried to flash this and got a status 7.
I have been using the ..UEND3 Modem up till now.
You need to update first or this modem would permanently brick your device. MK5 is a 4.3 build. I think the latest Rogers is NF2. You cannot flash this modem unless you've already updated. And then you won't need this. I released these because some mistakenly flash the older 4.3 modems after updating and find it won't work, so they needed a way back.

No Cell data after root and new rom and recovery.
Hi,
This is a repost from the S3 help forum as the OP here seems very knowledgeable about modems and bootloaders. Excuse the redundancy.
I was given a used ATT I747 s3 which had stock 4.3 , modem/bootloader mjb, and knox. I rooted, removed knox and installed slim 4.4.4 rom, lean 4.4.4 kernel and latest philz recovery. All running ok
including cell calls to/from phone, mms, apps and wifi data. Same modem/bootloader (MJB), IMEI accurate after upgrade. However ATT cellular data will not connect and or transmit and/or receive using att, phone or lte APN.
Any help/thoughts appreciated?
Could be the rom. I've been hearing about a lot of connection issues on cm/aosp based roms lately. Try flashing back to stock to see if it works.

Nevermind I re read. Did it work before you installed lean kernel?
Sent from my SGH-I747M using XDA Free mobile app
In my upgrade process, the first thing I did, after the recovery had been updated to Philz, was install slim rom and lean kernel together and at the same time. That was when the problems began. They went away when I reinstalled slim rom only (without lean kernel). Everything now ok. Hope that helps.
I'll start by saying I'm very much a noob but read and read as much as I can and have been following quite closely a lot of the s3 development so anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
It seems in the past few months a lot has changed with kernels and compatibility has broken numerous times. If the dates of the releases of kernel and Rom aren't quite close then some commits in the rom could break data, wifi, etc. If your running the latest nightly Rom make sure your using a recent kernel. Always just make a backup before flashing custom kernel and then you can revert right back if the kernel breaks anything.
Hope that helps...

Explanation needed for baseband

Hello experts,
I need an explanation for the following issue:
- M919 flashed via Odin with NK2 stock firmware
- flashed TWRP via heimdall
- flashed Mokee firmware via TWRP
- baseband is changed to M919UVUFNB4
Now I flashed my wife's M919 which is on M919UVUEMK2 with Mokee but the baseband stays at MK2. Why?
Do I need to flash her phone to NK2 and then flash Mokee to get the M919UVUFNB4 baseband?
Why would you want NB4 baseband?
You may have had mismatched baseband /bootloader on your phone to begin with.
You should always have the latest modem running NH7 or NK2, even if you downgrade bootloader.
Pp.
The point is why was the baseband downgraded when I flashed Mokee on my phone but not upgraded when I flashed Mokee on my wife's phone?
Mokee roms will not install modem or change firmware, these are not included in the rom.
Your baseband must have been at NB4 before you flashed mokee.
Its possible that when you flashed the stock firmware the modem didn't stick and stayed NB4.
Your wife's phone had the matching baseband /firmware already, so it stayed the same.
All you have to do is flash the nk2 modem on your phone using Odin and you'll be all set.
Pp.
@PanchoPlanet: Yes you are right. While flashing the stock ROM NK2 the modem didn't stick. I had to flash it 3 times on my phone and 2 times on my wife's phone. Now they are both on NK2 baseband. But unfortunately that didn't solve the low WiFi signal on my wife's phone...
If you can see a side by side comparison of both phones on the same wifi network and one has more signal than the other, you may be having a hardware issue with your wife's phone.
Hardware related could be the physical radio on m/b or the antenna wire.
Find a wifi analysis app in the play store and run it on both phones and check your readings.
If they match it could just be that the displayed value could be off.
Pp.
