[Modem][Baseband]4.4.2 Modems for I747/I747M - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

WARNING!!!!
Do not flash a 4.4.2 modem if you are running 4.3 firmware (bootloaders)!!!!
This will cause a permanent hard-brick!!! There is no fix!!!
The only reason anyone should need to flash one of these is if they had flashed a 4.3 or earlier modem for whatever reason. Once updated to 4.4.2 firmware, ONLY that matching modem will work. Flashing anything else will result in no signal and most likely an "Unknown" baseband and IMEI. If you flashed an older modem, you will need to flash back to the 4.4.2 one and these will all come back.
This has happened a number of times already, and continues to happen still. So I figured I would put them in a separate thread to make them easier to find.
Flash from the recovery of your choice, or Mobile Odin. The updater-script for these includes an assert that should prevent flashing on anything that does not have the correct bootloader.
Full Disclosure: I do not have an I747 or I747M, and as such, I am unable to test any of these. I have full confidence they will work as expected though. (I have been doing the modems for the T999 for a couple of years now). Still, you should know they are currently untested.

These modems will only work if you have updated to the latest 4.4.2 base firmware and bootloaders. The ROM you are running is irrelevant. If everything is currently working, you have no need for these.

I need this files to repair Unknow baseband and IMEI null in my I747M VLUFNE6 4.4.2
Another link please.. this link dont work..
when i try to unlock the phone with NSPro, Unknow baseband and IMEI null in my I747M VLUFNE6 4.4.2.. i nedd moden firmware of my version but i can´t donload..

Which one? There are 3 NE6 modems posted. (Any would probably work seeing as they appear to be identical)

And did you try any of the afh mirrors?

OP Updated!!!
OP Updated!
As requested, I have added the latest I747M, NH2 modems for the Canadian carriers that received this update.

Hello Doc, I have an issue trying to upload the modem on my sgh i747 because when I downloaded the CWM modem gives me Error 7 and dont let me upload the modem actually I have I747UCUEMJB and 4.4.4 slimkat, but my bigger problem is the imei, baseband null. helpme please all the night I wastryng many solutions and I am so tired now.. thanks

You probably never updated your firmware to 4.4.2.
To know for sure open terminal emulator and enter this.
getprop ro.bootloader
If it says MJB, you haven't updated your firmware yet and flashing this modem would permanently break your phone. If it is MJB, flash the same firmware via Odin and factory reset. That often fixes the imei problem. If it does not, pm me for further help with it. Can't post those instructions here.

Thanks for keeping the support for this phone going. I have the latest bootloader ..uemk5 for my Rogers sghI747m.
I tried to flash this and got a status 7.
I have been using the ..UEND3 Modem up till now.

You need to update first or this modem would permanently brick your device. MK5 is a 4.3 build. I think the latest Rogers is NF2. You cannot flash this modem unless you've already updated. And then you won't need this. I released these because some mistakenly flash the older 4.3 modems after updating and find it won't work, so they needed a way back.

No Cell data after root and new rom and recovery.
Hi,
This is a repost from the S3 help forum as the OP here seems very knowledgeable about modems and bootloaders. Excuse the redundancy.
I was given a used ATT I747 s3 which had stock 4.3 , modem/bootloader mjb, and knox. I rooted, removed knox and installed slim 4.4.4 rom, lean 4.4.4 kernel and latest philz recovery. All running ok
including cell calls to/from phone, mms, apps and wifi data. Same modem/bootloader (MJB), IMEI accurate after upgrade. However ATT cellular data will not connect and or transmit and/or receive using att, phone or lte APN.
Any help/thoughts appreciated?

Could be the rom. I've been hearing about a lot of connection issues on cm/aosp based roms lately. Try flashing back to stock to see if it works.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk

Nevermind I re read. Did it work before you installed lean kernel?
Sent from my SGH-I747M using XDA Free mobile app

In my upgrade process, the first thing I did, after the recovery had been updated to Philz, was install slim rom and lean kernel together and at the same time. That was when the problems began. They went away when I reinstalled slim rom only (without lean kernel). Everything now ok. Hope that helps.

I'll start by saying I'm very much a noob but read and read as much as I can and have been following quite closely a lot of the s3 development so anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
It seems in the past few months a lot has changed with kernels and compatibility has broken numerous times. If the dates of the releases of kernel and Rom aren't quite close then some commits in the rom could break data, wifi, etc. If your running the latest nightly Rom make sure your using a recent kernel. Always just make a backup before flashing custom kernel and then you can revert right back if the kernel breaks anything.
Hope that helps...

How to manually update I747 to 4.4.2

Hey guys,
I got a I747 I want to give to my mother as a gift.
I downgraded 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 and ran the secret menu unlock to unlock the sim card, that worked perfectly.
Now I want to update this out of 4.1.1 to 4.4.2 but I cannot find a stock firmware to run on odin anywhere.
Do I need to go to 4.3 first? Is there a stock firmware for that?
SamMobile stops at 4.1.2... OTA obviously doesn't work.
How Can I get this done..

You can just flash stock 4.1.2 firmware from sammobile and then run OTA updates.
I also found this on sammobile: Canada (Bell Mobile) (Black Edition), Version: Android 4.4.2, PDA: I747MVLUFNE6
CSC: I747MOYCFNE6, MODEM: I747MVLUFNE6

Will it work though.
I have it already on my pc, I updated my wife's with it.
If I update to 4.1.2 will OTA come? Even with the I747(not the I747m) on the Bell network?

I have a Motorola Atrix from Bell. I flashed it with stock ATT firmware and received OTA updates from ATT over wi-fi.
Since you have the i747, start with stock pre-rooted ATT 4.1.1. This will flash the stock recovery, radio, and bootloader. Run triangle away, flash a stock unrooted ATT stock 4.1.1 ROM, and take the OTA updates.

I have 4.1.1 stock firmware on my att 1747. It has never been rooted.
I run the Ota and I got an error, now it tells me "Your software is up to date".
Can I flash a bell i747m 4.4.2 image onto this i747 or will it brick?

You can flash i747m firmware on your phone but DO NOT flash the radios or bootloader from an i747m to an i747 and vice versa. Bricking is a really possibility if you do that.
Do you have a custom recovery? If you do, you will need to install a stock recovery.
Try resetting the phone (wiping cache, data) in recovery or through the ROM itself.

Alright, I have the stock recovery. How do I not flash the radio and boatloads when using the firmware from sammobile?
You cant. You cannot flash another devices firmware. Odin wont let it happen and if it did youd end up hard bricked due to mixed firmware. For example your sbl1, modemst and param partitions (plus others) would be i747 and youd be flashing sbl2, sbl3, rpm, etc from an I747M.
The only thing you could use are the system partition and kernel, nothing else. There are two ways to accomplish this, one is to build a rom from the firmware and flash that. The other is to flash with mobile odin, but that requires root and youd still have to be very careful.
Another priblem I see you encountering is you cannot run 4.4.2 without 4.3 or newer firmware. It will not boot otherwise.
You need to go to the General section and follow one of enewman17's tutorials to get to either 4.3 or 4.4.2. Personally, I dont see any other way you will be able to accomplish it.

Alright, based on Doc holiday, and others they say It cannot be done and from my experience I beleive them.
Thank you,
It's very difficult to do this when others are giving bad advice.
So for the record, cannot flash i747m firmware to i747.
Thanks!
The annoying part here is I can do it with my m7, I just flashed the Dev edition onto my Bell m7 with no problems.
All devices are different in many ways. What is perfectly safe to do with one brand or model can brick another.
And I wouldnt call it "bad" advice... I've seen audit13 and others helping lots of folks with very good advice. We all make mistakes and we all have more we can learn about these devices. No one knows everything about this stuff and shouldnt let that prevent them from trying to help.
Those who are trying to help are doing so with the best of intentions and tell people what they think could be the best way to solve a given problem. In cases like this one, its easy to see how anyone would think its ok to flash different firmware between similar models based on being able to do so on other devices they are familiar with. (If I had gone into those forums I wouldve been telling people the opposite and ended up being wrong there.)
All I can say is chalk it up as a new lesson on a different device, and I hope you still appreciate that someone was trying to help.
@audit13 I hope none of this discourages you from helping. Ive seen plenty of threads where your advice was sound and appreciated, and I am glad you have been around to help so many people out!
Now, back on the problem at hand... if you want to be running the latest 4.4.2 kk, you will have the option to use the OS (/system and kernel) from either the I747 or I747M firmware. But first you must fully update to a minimum of the 4.3 MJB firmware for the I747. Once you have this running for your base firmware/bootloader, you can then run the Bell or AT&T (4.3 or 4.4.2) system. (I hope this is making sense!)
So first, update the full 4.3, MJB, firmware via Odin. (Theres a thread in General with the file, ill post the link in a min).
If you want to update to 4.4.2 firmware, you can then follow enewman17's tutorial to do so via OTA.
You can then either stay with that, or use Mobile Odin to flash ONLY the system and kernel from the Bell firmware.
Let me know if any of that needs better clarification! Also let us know what your ultimate goal is. From the options you have, where do you want to end up?

After updating with the 4.3 firmware, you can first try using the official ota to update. Then, if that fails you can go to enewman17's thread and try his method.

[Q] Trouble to upgrade bootloader from MK5 to MJB to NE4

I've been serching for an answer for a while and can't seem to find a proper one that makes sure that I won't brick my phone. I've been flashing roms since 2011 and know pretty much the drill but lately I've been flashing at a couple months interval CM11 m builds and since I don't follow the threads like I used to, I feel like I'm missing out on how to do the right procedure.
So this is my phone:
Rogers i747 SG3
Cm11 4.4.4
Bootloader: I747MVLUEMK5
Baseband: I747MUMUEND3
I've installed these about a month and a half ago and since I've lost LTE networking but I didn't care to try to fix since I don't use it that much and left it like that.
This morning, I tried flashing MJB bootloader and modem zip in recovery but it gives me the classic error 7
Any Idea how to get out of this impasse? I've been searching all morning and can't find what I'm looking for...
I see you're in Montreal. Do you have the AT&T version of the s3; i.e. i747?
Your bootloader (MJB - 4.3 AT&T) and modem (ND3 - Telcel) appear to be mismatched. Maybe this is causing the loss of LTE connections.
What recovery are you using? Is it up to date?

I use Clockworkmod recovery 6.0.4.7 The latest version and Its an at&t i747 phone but with Rogers(same thing).
Is there other basebands or bootloaders I can maybe update with?
Sorry, I made a mistake. Your bootloader matches the modem for am i747m from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898
Boot into download mode and look at the model number at the top.
Cool yeah it is a i747m you're right.
Once I install the latest (canadian) firmware, does that give me the possibility to flash mjb and the Ne4 to have access to the latest cm roms without any trouble? Not sure if i understand everything here...
Do not flash any firmware not specifically designed for the i747m. The mjb bootloader is for the i747 and flashing that on your phone would probably brick it.

Well thanks for the link. I updated my firmware and played with the apn and now the LTE works again and hitting an 80 mb download... pretty crazy.
So are you saying that a i747m would not be able to flash cm12(lollipop) which states in the nightly thread that it needs a NE4 bootloader/modem?!
You can determine which bootloaders are supported by CM12 by downloading CM12 and looking at the updater script in Notepad. The first few lines will list the supported bootloaders.
The latest stock firmware for the i747m can be found at sammobile.com. This firmware is flashable in Odin and would include the bootloader, modem, and the dreaded Knox.

Bell/Virgin i747m to nj1 question

Hey, I'd like to use CM12.1 official nightlies but I have a bell(well, virgin) phone with the ne6 bootloader and I'd like to be able to upgrade to nj1 but I've searched and no one has written anything about it, only the American version. Can anyone please explain clearly how I go from NE6 to NJ1 to get my phone or equivalent to run CM12.1?
The nj1 is for the i747 (AT&T version), not the i747m. Flashing the nj1 bootloader to an i747m will brick it.
The NE6 bootloader and modem, from what I have read, should work with 12.1. But, if you want something newer go to sammobile: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-I747M/BMC/ . You have several options; NH2, NK2 or the newest being OB1 (That last is the Jedi master of ROMs. )
Thanks so much, I'll try a clean flash and see how it turns out, time to back up.

[SOLVED] I think my i747M may be soft bricked?

Hey all. I am fairly inexperienced when it comes to rooting, though I have done a few succesfully in the past. I currently have the newest version of TWRP installed on my Samsung I747M. The I747M I have is not from one of the major carriers, but as far as I am aware, the phone is factory network unlocked. Carrier is GCI, in Alaska.
I currently have a 4.4.2 Touchwiz Rom installed and started having problems after I attempted to flash the ROM Dandroid, which is 4.3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121506). I had created a backup using TWRP before flashing the ROM and reverted back once I noticed the problem.
The main issue I am experiencing at this time is the Baseband Version, IMEI, and other information related to the modem is showing "Unknown" and features such as wifi will not toggle on.
I had also attempted to flash the most current version of the modem that I was able to find thru Odin. Odin showed the flash as successful. The version I flashed to the phone was I747MUMUEND3: modem_CWM_I747MUMUEND3.zip - 18.80 MB - April 3rd, 2014 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898)
At this point, I can still get into recovery, download modem and I am able to boot up the phone and access most all functions. The next step I was going to try was going to be to flash back to stock firmware from sammobile's website (Was using to use the Roger's version of 4.4.2), though I don't want to cause more issues than I can handle or resolve thru software.
Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated or even just how to get the modem/wifi features functional again would be helpful. I'm just as happy staying on my current ROM at this point if I can get the phone fully functional again.
It's possible that the rom is not compatible with the kk modem and bootloader.

Forgot to mention, this is something I did try. I attempted to flash Cyanogen Mod 12.1 (Download: cm-12.1-20151017-NIGHTLY-d2att.zip (286.76 MB) ) and most recent nightly build & the most recent stable release (CM11) (Download: cm-11-20140210-SNAPSHOT-M3-d2att.zip (194.37 MB) ). When flashing these, I transferred the downloaded ZIP file to the internal storage of the phone in the root directory and attempted to run an install from TWRP. Both installs failed.
Since the phone is an i747m, I recommend flashing back to stock using Odin 3.07 and stock ROM file from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-I747M/
The i747m versions are interchangeable between Rogers, Telus, and Bell.
After flashing back to stock, install TWRP using Odin 3007 from here: https://dl.twrp.me/d2att/twrp-2.8.7.0-d2att.img.tar
Create a nandroid backup using TWRP and then try to flash a custom ROM again.

I'll give that a shot when I get home. Stock firmware was one of my next thoughts. I have it downloading at the measly 15 Kbps offered for free from sammobile so hopefully should be done by the time I get home & update this thread with any progress.
Another possibility is a custom kernel, if you are wishing to stay with TouchWiz and not wanting to upgrade your bootloader and modem past 4.3.
Some of the 4.4.2 TW roms will run on 4.3 bootloader and modems using one of ibuddler's kernels or ktoonsez's TW kernel. This was discussed most in the Likewise ROM thread and links to the various versions of ibuddler's kernel may be found there. It may have also been discussed in TMS3KK thread. The ktoonsez kernel can be found in its own thread.
But, you may really want to consider a newer ROM in order to change to something with the stagefright fixes. I think any of these may require the latest 4.4.2 bootloader and modem. (What say you @audit13?)

I'm not opposed to any of this. Mostly just trying to slim down this phone to the basics as much as I can and am quite open to any recommendations. Main thing I want to maximize is battery life & simplicity since this is for my wife and those are her major wants in a phone. I figure any kind of ROM that just covers the basics should cover my bases & would prefer one with a darker/black skin to maximize battery life w/ the OLED screen. I am in the process of flashing to the Roger's stock ROM as I type this w/ my fingers crossed.
Just to add, no over clocking or anything of that nature is desired. If I remember correctly I ended up putting the ktoonsez kernel on one of my handsets, either this Galaxy S3 or my Galaxy S5, though I can't recall which since it was so long ago.
Alright! So progress! Wifi, Baseband version, IMEI and all other missing information restored & now works w/ stock rom flash. In process of reflashing TWRP now.
Let us know what happens.
Still all good with TWRP installed. Have not flashed back on a custom ROM yet. After reviewing some of the above recommendations, I am kind of liking the looks & features of TMS3KK (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2725750) and feel it would suit my needs.
I factory reset, cleared cache, and cleared Dalvik thru TWRP & then made a back up. Prior to this, I confirmed everything was still working normally w/ phone fully loaded after TWRP was installed.
One of the things mentioned on the installation instructions for that ROM is the following:
---
Do not mix and match 4.3 firmware (bootloaders/modem) with the new 4.4.2 ones. You will hard brick and I warned you. This works the same as any 4.3 or ND8port ROM with 4.3 firmware and it can use the new 4.4.2 ones also.
Link to recovery flashable i747 and i747M 4.4.2 bootloader and modem packages: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...hable-t2856914

How would I go about confirming my current bootloader/modem versions to make sure they are both 4.4.2 before flashing this ROM? At the link provided, those files/links to the files were removed because they were causing some bricked devices per a note at the top of that thread. Here's a link to the thread I am referencing since the above link looks to be broken. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...mware-ne4-ne6-nf2-recovery-flashable-t2856914)
If you flashed the latest stock rom, you are running the latest 4.4.2 bootoader and modem.
You can download and run the Samsung phone info app from the play store to confirm this.
You should be good to flash any d2lte or d2att rom.
I recommend not flashing any modem or bootoader from this point forward unless the bootoader and modem are newer than the currently installed botloader and modem. Also, the botloader and modem must be matched to each other.

I guess I never realized that the bootloader & modem were installed w/ the stock rom as I always have flashed those separately through Odin when needed. Definitely good information to have and not easy information to find. I have successfully got my custom ROM on there and am now fine-tuning it for the wife.

Glad to hear the phone is running well.
I've heard it said "Happy wife, Happy life."

[SOLVED] i747 GPS Issue On Kitkat ROMs And Above

I have an ATT S3 which had 4.1.1 firmware before I rooted, flashed a ROM, etc. I'm having a GPS issue, but this doesn't seem to be the usual GPS issue S3 users encounter. From my research, I've seen S3 users stating that GPS works for them, they flash a certain ROM, and all of a sudden it doesn't work at all on any ROM (until they either tighten the screws in the phone, or reflash stock firmware in ODIN, or something like that). GPS works fine for me--I get a satellite signal fairly quickly, and the signal is strong enough to be accurate... but only on Jellybean ROMs. If I flash any sort of Kitkat ROM or newer, GPS can never get a signal. However, once I flash back to any ROM that is Android 4.3.1 or below, it starts working fine again.
I'm thinking this is related to the 4.1.1 firmware I had on here before flashing ROMs. I had a very similar issue with radios and getting cellular signal. With the 4.1.1 radios, I was able to get signal just fine on 4.3.1 ROMs and below, but Kitkat or anything above would not be able to find a signal. I flashed a newer radio in TWRP and signal-finding now works fine on all ROMs. [Side note that potentially is related, my i747 is unlocked and I'm using it with a T-Mobile SIM] Would flashing 4.3 stock firmware, which would perhaps give my phone "newer GPS radios" for lack of a better term, fix this issue? I don't want to leave 4.1.1 firmware if I don't have to, since apparently 4.1.1 firmware is more desirable, and once you go to 4.3 you can't come back down.
I think you have summarized it well. I have seen others comment about running newer ROMs on older firmware and modems with issues related to bluetooth, gps, and wifi. Firmware and modem upgrades fixed there problems.
You have already taken care of the greatest reason I have seen regarding having the 4.1.1 firmware, sim/carrier unlocking the device. From all I have read, that unlock is permanent no matter what rom changes and wipes you may do in the future. I guess a jtag or mobo swap would remove the unlock.
The drawbacks with the official 4.3 release (MJB) are Knox and the inability to downgrade. Knox seems to be in the official ROM and not in the firmware. I say this because the custom TW roms, 4.3 or 4.4.2, come without Knox. enewman17 has even removed Knox from some of his stock rom images. The same holds true for the three official Kitkat releases, NE4, NJ1, and NJ2: Knox and no downgrade. There is an extra kicker with the 4.4.2 releases, the modems will brick the phone if their version does not match the firmware version.
There is one thing you could do if you did not want to commit to MJB. Prior to MJB being released there was a leaked 4.3 stock rom with firmware and modem. Several custom TW roms were developed from it and you can still get the firmware and modem files in some of the threads. The short code for that release was MJ2. The great thing about the firmware with this release is that you can still downgrade it. You can also run the MJ2 firmware, (firmware = bootloader in the way I use the terms) with the MJB modem (modem = baseband = radio). The MJ2/MJB combination is downgradeable. This bootloader/modem combination file can be found in the OP of some of the ROM threads by loserskater and others. Even better, there are several custom TouchWiz based KitKat ROMs that will run on this MJ2/MJB combination, as long as you use one of two custom kernels; one is by ibuddler and the other is by ktoonsez. Ktoonsez has his own thread, just be certain to grab the correct kernel. He has downloads for TW and CM/AOSP kernels for several android versions. Links to ibuddler's kernel can be found in the Likewise ROM thread, IIRC. I know these kernels worked with NE4 TW ROMS and the MJ2/MJB combo. I haven't seen mention of if they will work with NJ1 or NJ2 based ROMS.
It could be that Ktoonsez' CM/AOSP 4.3 kernels will provide the same functionality with current CM/AOSP roms. At one point CM/AOSP roms based on Kitkat stopped working with the 4.3 bootloader, it was either November of 2014 or 2013. I have never seen mention of LP or MM roms working with the 4.3 bootloader, regardless of the kernel.
A reason to consider running a newer ROM is the Stagefright fixes to be found in them, incomplete as that may be. I haven't seen the fixes mentioned as incorporated into any of the TW based ROMs other than enewman's stock image. CM11 does have the fixes but seems to require a 4.4.2 bootloader and modem.
Something else that can be used to fix gps problems is an app called GPS Test. After an update or flash, many people have encountered gps issues, and often all you have to do is open the app and let it find all the satellites it can. Then open maps and it should get a quick location fix. (You may or may not have to clear data on maps or other gps related apps first). You can Uninstall the app afterwards as it only needs to be done once.
This doesn't always work, but it has enough to be a worthwhile alternative to try before flashing.
Also, I've noticed on more recent builds, gps/maps just can't seem to get a location fix. If you're in a bind, just leave it running for a bit and sometimes it'll start working after a while. Again, this isn't always the case, but it's worth knowing/trying if you find yourself lost or in a bind and cant do any real work/troubleshooting.

Thanks for the help from both of you! I tried the GPS fix app and unfortunately it didn't work. I'll give MJ2 firmware a go.
Just to confirm before I flash...MJ2 provides all MJB 4.3 radios and such, while retaining the ability to downgrade to 4.1.1 if I wish? I just want to be 100% sure before I flash this.

Yes, I did this myself. No bad side effects observed.

Well, actually, I used the flashable zip that contained the MJ2 bootloader and the MJB modem. I downgraded both back to 4.1.1 to do the free unlock. I downgraded, confirmed downgrade, performed the unlock, and then went back up to MJ2 bootloader and MJB modem. I have since upgraded to NE4 for bootloader and modem.

I'm confused once again, and I know I shouldn't be...
I did the free unlock in 4.1.1, so will going to this MJ2 un-do the unlock with the new radio?

Sorry about creating confusion.
Your Unlock, free or otherwise, is permanent - or so I have read. Going to MJ2 or any of the newer bootloader and modems should not change your unlock status.
I meant that I was already on MG2 (4.1.2) before learning of the free unlock. From MG2 I was able to downgrade to 4.1.1, do the unlock and then upgrade to the MJ2 bootloader and MJB modem. Months after that I again downgraded to 4.1.1 with no issues. I upgraded that same day to MJB and then to NE4 in order to install CM11.

No problem at all. It's not you, its me XD
I'll flash MJ2 when I get home later tonight. I appreciate the help given by you (and others). This S3 forum is definitely one of the more friendly forums I've come across--much more patient with noobs like myself. Thanks for the help!

I found a page on galaxys3root.com with links to 3 files... Stock 4.3 MJ2 with root (and I think no KNOX as well), MJ2 modem, and Insecure 4.3 kernel. Since these are all separate files I have to reboot to recovery and flash each one individually. I'm assuming this is what I'm looking for. If it isn't, then feel free to chime in and tell me to stop, since the downloads are probably going to take a very long time to complete (on my Windows XP netbook from 2011).

I recall seeing that page before I first rooted my S3, but I didn't use it.
Since you have TWRP you could flash the MJ2/MJ2 bootloader and modem or the MJ2/MJB bootloader and modem and not lose the ability to downgrade. There are download links in several ROM thread OPs, the ROMs I recall offhand in S3RX by loserskater and TMS3 (don't recall the dev). You could root by flashing the SuperSu.zip from TWRP. The link is in the OP of the stable thread.
I think this is what I did: custom recovery and then SuperSu.zip while still on stock. Later I went to the TMS3 4.3 rom while on MJ2/MJB. I regained root with the same method after the downgrade and subsequent upgrades I mentioned above.
Problem solved. Can now acquire GPS signal through Waze on 4.4.4 Quantum 5 ROM. I appreciate the help.
EDIT: Also working in CM12.1
