mdl update - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

hi guys. my question is should my baseband be MDL for a MDL rom? I never did the tmo software update to MDL but rooted and started flashing right out of the box. For the most part I've had pretty good luck flashing roms but I see most roms are MDL which Im still on the original MDB baseband even after flashing several MDL roms. My baseband stays the same. Off topic I noticed my system settings about phone does not show what modem I'm on. I'm confused if I were to flash (haven't looked into in yet) a new modem. How would I know which modem I'm on? I feel like I should be on a MDL baseband but am skeptical about the difficulties regarding root. Anyways is it possible to flash a new baseband like I would a modem or kernel? Or should I just odin a MDL stock rom with root injected? Then start from there? I had trouble getting root and a recovery on my friends phone that had the update so I used odin to go back to MDB because that was the easiest solution for me at the time. Silly question but is the modem and baseband related in any way? I guess what I'm asking is what do you guys recommend? Are you still on MDB like me? Or is MDL a must?

If you started flashing custom stuff back when MDB was the latest update; and you haven't manually updated your baseband... then no, you should still be on the previous baseband. Also, your modem should be what your baseband is.. MDB. I know that if you flash ROMs in CWM/TWRP you aren't getting the modem/baseband. If you just want to flash a new baseband/modem, check this thread out. I will say though, unless you are experiencing problems with the MDB modems, there's no real reason to go changing it.

[Q] From TW JB 4.3 to KK 4.4 about modem

So I'm currently using Sultan ROM, and I wanted to try a 4.4 KitKat ROM. I had to flash the MJ4 (using MJ4 ATM) or MJC modem available to flash the Sultan ROM, but was curious if I could flash the 4.4 KK ROM even though I have one of those modems.
Is it safe to downgrade a modem from a zip? (From DocHoliday77's thread)
Would I need to ODIN back to an older firmware instead?
SGH T-999 using TWRP 2.6.3.1
You can downgrade Modems using Doc's thread just fine. You don't have to Odin previous firmware if you don't want to.
As far as trying Kitkat rom is concerned, I do not believe its related to the Modem as such. So long you have UVDLJC baseband or newer, you should be all set.
If you open a terminal app and type
Code:
su
getprop ro.bootloader
It will spit out what firmware you are on. Like Perseus said above, LJC or newer.
Myself, I am on MD5 bootloader but I run LI7 modem. I have tried MJ4 and MJC (if that are the newest one's names) and I have had issues with latency on both in my area. So I went back to LI7 that was a JB leak about 7 months ago. lol.
Firmware =/= Modem

Feeling safe now. Thanked for the post and thanks for the reply
Note of Caution. Do not flash the most newest firmware UVUEMJC that includes the Bootloader called UVUEMJC. There are very serious consequences if you do. You follow Woody's steps to identify your bootloader.
However, the Modem from that firmware, which Doc has posted on this thread is quiet safe to use. Just flash it in your Custom Recovery TWRP or CWM.
(Yeah I know, having both the things named the same is confusing.)

I'll check out my firmware I'm on in a bit. I'll try out the different modems to see which one I'm getting best connections with too then. Thanks for the useful info!

Yeah, it was confusing until you two showed up and came to the rescue I've heard of those serious consequences and won't be flashing the newest firmware for my own safety. I've had a history of a couple hard bricked devices (still bricked, sadly) and wouldn't want to risk any bricks again without reading and understanding the information correctly hahaha. Thanks for the warning :good:

How To Update and Root to 4.4.4

Hi, sorry this is probably a noob question but I've been reading through the forums and got confused how to update my rooted s4. Normally I would just install the custom rom with the update but it seems like this isnt the case right now.
I'm currently on 4.2.2, rooted, and have wicked as my rom. How would I update to 4.4.4? From what I understand there is a new modem and firmware... something to do with NH7? Can someone explain to me what NH7 does. Thanks for all your help!
NH7 is the newest firmware based on 4.4.4 and it is recommended if you plan of using 4.4.4 tw roms. To update it just download the NH7 firmware from general thread and flash it with Odin, after that you can use cf-auto root to root, or if you're just planning to flash a ROM then just flash recovery and then flash ROM.. If you care about tripping your Knox counter then just know that flashing recovery or rooting will trip it

You mention that you want to update and that under normal circumstances you would simply flash the an updated custom ROM... yet you say you've read it isn't that simple, right?
You are correct, it isn't THAT simple, but it is ALMOST that simple. Being as that you are still on the old 4.2.2 pre-KNOX bootloader and all, you can flash and flash and flash all day long and a single use of Triangle Away is all you'd need to still be able to revert your device back to 100% stock, both firmware AND flash counters if you ever needed to for some reason. If you use Odin, Kies, or take an OTA update you will lose that ability. Anything you flash once you go through official channels to update will trip your KNOX counter... and that cannot be reset. The problems you've read about simply flashing an updated custom ROM is that you will have problems with data.
The data drops can be avoided by flashing the newest modem, which would be NH7. Understand though, that method only updates your GSM modem; your LTE modem would be unaffected. This would only be a problem though if you are having trouble receiving LTE where others with the same carrier can get it with no problem. If you aren't having any problems with LTE, then I would recommend to simply update your GSM modem and use the custom recovery of your choice (ClockWorkMod, Philz Touch, or TWRP) to flash any of the ROMs in the T-Mobile GS4 Android Development section.
To update your GSM modem, follow the instructions in this thread. That thread is for updating to the 4.4.2 NB4 modem, which that modem would actually be all you need; but if you wish to have the NH7 modem, just use the modem.bin ONLY file from this post instead of the modem package included in the tutorial thread. After that little bit of work, you can flash any Android version you want; from 4.2.2 all the way up to 4.4.4... AOSP, TouchWiz, or the Google Play Edition ROMs.
So from what I understand...
1. Update the modem not firmware
2. Flash ROM
So I don't need to re-root?
You are correct.
No need to re-root.

Need help - still on 4.3 MDL bootloader, I want to grade to 4.4.4

Hi.
I'm really out of the loop for flashing to the latest rom. I'm still on 4.3 Darthstalker Version X1. I want to upgrade to the latest 4.4.4. I've try flashing a few roms but I couldn't get the wifi to turn on so I want to know what I'm doing wrong.
I've flashed the NH7 modem.bin from Shinnyside's thread. I didn't flash the non-HLOS file because after flashing just the modem.bin file I can see the NH4 modem is sticking and everything still work on 4.3. I then flashed a few different rom but I couldn't get the wifi to turn on. Is it that I'm getting this problem is because I didn't flash the non-HLOS modem? If I flash the non-NLOS file, will it solve the wifi problem I'm having?
I also read some post that I need to update to the NH7 bootloader (i'm still on the mk2 bootloader) for some 4.4.4 feature to work. How do I do that?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Either try a different kernel or update to NH7 firmware, then flash ROM
Hi serio22,

Any custom kernel like ktoonsez or alucard for example.. Also make sure you update your modem if you don't want to update to the latest firmware

[Q] What Exactly Can I Flash? [Rom(s)]

I have an AT&T S3 running stock 4.4.2 on the NE4 Modem AND Baseband. (purchased this way). Not being new to rooting, I find myself a bit nervous to flash any custom roms with this modem and baseband. Since I am already on the NE4 modem and baseband, can I or can I not flash a custom rom with the same thing? Be it AOSP, AOKP or TW? Any non-smart-alec comments would be greatly appreciated. I've google and read the forums but most of the post I've seen has been stating not to flash unless coming from another baseband and you are upgrading. I understand the fact you can't downgrade.
You can flash any rom designed for the d2lte as long as the rom supports the bootloader.

[Q] No Sound after updating to 4.4.4 NK2

Hello all, I need some help. I bought a used S4 from a local person here. It was on an old update, Version 4.3.
I rooted it, did not take the OTA. installed custom recovery and flashed latest NK2 via philz touch, at first the WiFi wasnt working, so I installed the wifi fix/NON-HLOS.bin via odin. I also installed Modem.bin to upgrade to the latest baseband of NK2 also. This is when the trouble started, I probably messed up.
Currently both baseband and build are now NK2
I've downloaded NK2 TAR and flashed them back to t-mobile stock in an effort to fix, I used triangle away, cleared the counters, flashed stock NK2 in odin. Still no sound through the speakerphone. It was working before I did all this so I don't think its a hardware issue, Anyone have any ideas? Best I can tell is its probably the NON-HLOS.bin I flashed. Is there a correct one I can do, or anyway I can fix this? I've tried all I know with my limited knowledge of this phone. I had first flashed modem.bin i found here on xda, but i think my mistake was flashing the LTE/NON-HLOS.bin. probably is an older one for my bootloader im on? not really sure. I have also tried these with no success. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55373341&postcount=22
Any help is appreciated! Thanks so much!
You only need the modem bin if you are staying on an older bootloader, that was your mistake. Check what bootloader you have right now and you need to match your NON-HLOS to whatever bootloader you currently have

I will try this, I guess I'm confused exactly how to find out what bootloader im on, and where to find the matching NON-HLOS.bin file for it?
EDIT: used Phone info app from play store,
bootloader is MK2
baseband says NH7
PDA is NK2
CSC is NK2
Anyway to just update to the latest? Or whats reccomended version to stay on here?

Well you can re-flash NK2 firmware. Sometimes you have to flash a couple times for it to fully update everything

Ok I Odin'd NK2 several times, still no joy so I ended up using Fenny's guide to return to complete official stock on 4.4.2, then took tmobile's OTA updates and got back to 4.4.4 NK2 official, now bootloader says official samsung, status says official.
Bootloader: M919UVUFNK2
Baseband: M919UVUFNK2
PDA : M919UVUFNK2
CSC : M919TMBFNK2
EDIT: FIXED! Ended up a terrible coincidence, I took off and reseated the speaker on the back and it worked! Thank you so much for your help and pointing me in the right direction serio22 its much appreciated, I hit thanks for ya!
Still no sound, As far I read there are only 2 bootloaders for this device, so Im pretty sure I'm on the new one since it mentions knox on it.
I suppose its possible the hardware happen to fail at same time as all this? Seems like a crappy coincidence, but I dont know what else to try. Any other ideas? Everything is stock/official non rooted and up to date at this point.
Cool thanks posting what worked for you
