Hello All,
I am used to flashing my HTC Touch Pro 2 and other windows mobile devices, but i have just moved onto a desire and am having a nightmare.
I bought the Desire on PAYG from 3 in the UK as they were up to a point supplying unbranded phones, but just my luck I had to have one from the new batch which is branded and cost me £18 to get an unlock code to use the phone on T-Mobile.
So as I stand I have an Sim Unlocked Desire thats branded to 3 UK.
The Rom version is 1.22.771.1 and Hboot 0.80 which I believe is an issue with rooting so that I can use other Roms.
To be honest I am quite happy with 1.22.771.1, but have a strange issue that on some occassions when someone calls me the ringtone starts, but then cuts out and there is no further sound, although they are still calling and I can answer the call.
So I really want to root and then switch roms.
I have read and read and read, and I believe my best chance is unrevoked, as I have seen a couple of posts which say it works with 1.22.771.1, can anyone confirm this?
Also if I flash to a custom rooted Froyo 2.2 rom, will I still be able to return to 1.2x roms should I not like it? As I have also read that unrevoked, does not work with 2.2, or is this just if you use the OTA roms?
If anyone out there can give me a do this 123 guide to get myself sorted I would really apparciate it.
Thanks
Stephen.
Hi
The issue with the ring tone is due to a setting,
Setting > sound > quiet on pick up
In check this option
sent from my C64
SeArch for a guide, its easy.
But you can return to any Rom you like, as long as your rooted.
I mention this due to if download the new ota you will lose root, and I don't think a method has been found to root the new 2.2 Rom yet.
sent from my C64
Sorry on my desire, but if you install a 2.2 Rom from xda you won't lose root.
But if download via ota and install you will lose root.
sent from my C64
So are you confirming I can root 1.22.771.1 with unevoked? Then install a rooted 2.2 rom?
Regards the Setting > sound > quiet on pick up should that be on or off? to cure the sound issue as i have that set as off.
thanks stephen.

I can confirm that you can't, and I wouldn't recommend that you try. The clockwork recovery image that unrevoked uses never loads, so the phone can't be updated in any way.
What I tried was slightly more extreme. I attempted to downgrade the HBOOT version, so I could flash a lower version generic RUU ROM. Unfortunately, whilst this worked as far as I can tell, the screen simply stopped working. I could actually receive phone calls, but nothing would come up on the screen.
The bad news is that even after flashing back to the original Three RUU ROM, the screen remained blank. The good news for me is that I'm due to get a replacement phone under warranty.
Personally, I can't even tell if this is a software issue or a hardware issue unique to me (I think it might be hardware as I should at least be able to boot into the bootloader), although this time I'll wait for Three to push the update, as I'm not prepared to take the risk of not being able to use my phone again.

I had Hboot 0.80 on my Desire with 1.21.405.2 and I used the Unrevocked3 method to root. But mine was unbranded from Three.
I now have 2.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775) with 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 Radio.
All works great.
Help, I had a quick look about and couldn't find a similar thread, apologies if the is one tho as there is a lot to look through here and may have missed it.
Story is, I brought my desire z about a month ago not sure what software version it had but I preceded to flash it with a downgraded version ( 1.34.405.5 ) with a .executive RUU utility on my Windows 7 pc. Just to get used to things, I have flashed many phones before no problem.
Now tho I found what I believe to be the latest official ROM from here:
But everytime I run the thing I get error 132 signature update problem or something.
I have tried it while the phone is temp rooted, permanently rooted all the Ian drivers are fine I tried different versions of Windows. I just want to get back to the latest version and be able to update over the air from now on, thanks for reading.
What RUU are you trying to flash ? If it is the new Egypt version, please don't do it, and see the thread in the dev section for reasons why.
My DZ came with 1.34.405.5 and I have successfully flashed the RUU of this version from this forum, no problems.
It would be useful to find out what the current version is on your phone. It will tell you in Menu->Settings->About Phone.
Also it would be useful to check which HBOOT version to have, and whether you are S-OFF. Put the phone into hboot by having it powered off, then hold Volume Down and hold Power till it comes up with a white screen with skateboarding Androids.
It is possible to downgrade a ROM if you go through the procedure in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832503
Helo thanks for reply.
Im pretty sure the version i had on the phone phone was newer than the one i flashed on as i just wanted to have a trial run with a rom that definatly worked fine before trying custom ones ect.
Currently it is S-On HBOOT version is 0:85:0009 and software version is 1.34.405.5 (the one i flashed over the stock)
I cant link to the RUU i am trying to use but it says it is a WWE world/europe one and i also tryed 3 others just incase, all give the same error.
Version is 2.29.405.2 that im trying to get on my phone as i think thats the latest official one??
Your phone sounds like it is stock so far, so it'll probably only let you flash a ROM designed for your very specific model of phone. So if the phone was from a particular country, it will probably only let you flash a ROM from that country, not just any old WWE ROM.
So is 1.34.405.5 on there properly now, up and running ? If so then you could always root it and run gfree to get SuperCID etc, which will then let you flash whichever official ROMs you want (but be careful if it's a very new ROM that might not yet be rootable etc).
I'm not familiar with any ROMs starting with version number 2 though ?
A quick google for 2.29.405.2 brings up Desire & Desire HD links.
BE CAREFUL DUDE!!!!
Yeah phone is running fine, slightly less reliable than it was before i flashed tho but im putting that down to it being a slightly older version than the one that was on here before maby.
Im up for just sticking an official desire z ROM back on here and leaving it alone for now. If you could point me in the direction of a suitable ROM download that would be great, or is there someplace i can go and put my specific phones model in and get the factory shipped ROM back cus that would be even better.
That 2.29.405.2 update is for the standard desire and desire HD? Damn that could have turned out bad had it flashed to my phone.
These smart phones seem a bit more tricky to flash than the older phones im used to doing, is there a decent step by step guide you can link me to for help with flashing as i have come accross 3 different ways already.
If your phone doesn't have S-OFF etc, then you're only going to be able to flash very specific ROMs to your phone. Since we don't really know what original ROM your phone came with, I recommend that you root your phone (using the "rage" method) and get full S-OFF via "gfree". Guides to these two are below, along with a link to a guide to get adb working on your PC :
adb - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
rage - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228
gfree - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855764
Also check out this handy guide, which has a lot of useful info - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835777
You will come across a method of rooting called "Visionary". This is in theory an almost one-click method of rooting. However, I personally wouldn't recommend it, because whilst it works faultlessly for some, it goes wrong for others, and when it goes wrong it quite often goes very badly wrong indeed.
If you don't understand some of the stuff in those guides, then please post up in that thread on it, and I'm sure someone will be able to help you out. Best to ask questions first rather than try some stuff out and realise you don't know what you're doing.
Hey all, new here to posting although use this site alot for the quick fix answers ive had in the past.
How ever decided i would try rooting my desire z as i was looking for that extra control over everything and to loose some of that bloatware just like many of you.
Only thing im having trouble with is actually getting a successful root, im not one to just ask without looking of course but in actual fact ive been at this since 11ish this morning (8hours ago) with no luck. Ive tried about 5 different methods (from xda users such as 'Aegishua' and 'gtrab' guides to a random google searchs also) to no luck at all. Had quite a fair few errors pop up during the process of trying but so far my DZ is still intact and working fine but with S-ON still.
Im not here to ask for someone to explain a fool proof way to root my phone i was just hoping that someone may b able to point me in the right direction of a guide that should hopefully bring some success.
I have an unbranded Desire Z running 2.2.1 (originally 2.2) on Vodafone UK. i could list software details but im hoping someone could either tell me i can't root it since the new security update in 2.2.1 or could pass on a link to a guide that may work for me.
Sorry to sound long winded but its been a day full of "wtf's" amungst other phrases so im just a little lost and confused
Thanks in advance
Matt
if you have adb working and are comfortable with it, use the wiki method..
do you know what firmware version you are? if you are 1.72 or above, you need to downgrade to 1.34 before you will be able to root successfully.
Check in dev section, there is something bout debranding and rooting for DZ and shows what newly one has issue, also you could try the xda wiki methond gfreev.05

Before trying to root you need to follow the step above. This is mainly the mistake people make when they try to root the Desire Z if your a new comer, this is words from the wise. Lol
Your firmware is probably 1.85 or something higher than 1.72 by the looks of things which just means you need to downgrade. But the complicated part is actually getting the downgrade to recognize your vodafone branded Desire Z's unique CID. That's where a goldcard comes in handy because it bypasses the CID check.
Anyways, all you need to do is make a goldcard to downgrade. If you get any errors then post the exact errors word for word if possible.
Hi, and thanks in advance for anyone who can help.
I have a desire hd phone, witch I love anyways I had it rooted a few months ago by a local phone shop, but I didn’t really see the benefit from it, in fact it caused problems so I performed a full factory reset within a few days, and thought that was the end of it.
Anyways my phone received the option to update to the 2.3 gingerbread on Monday, it downloads fine, and then when the install starts it freezes at about 20% of the way thorough.
I have contacted HTC several times about it, they say the phone will not update if it’s been rooted and I have to send it back to them to have it re-flashed, one person said it would cost £30, another said £200 so I would rather not send it to them. the last guy I spoke to was very helpful, he said it was possible for me to reflash the phone to its original ''shipped'' state, and if I joined a help forum I could possibly get some help, but he was unable to advise me on this., so here I am!!!
I received the phone new in January and it has had no updates until the one on Moday, and it was rooted using visionary a few months ago, I have performed several factory restores since then.
Current software is:
android version 2.2
baseband version 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_m
build number 1.37.771.3 CL290190
software number 1.37.771.3
im in the uk, and on the 3 network
Many thanks,

Hey dude, this link should help. I'm currently downloading it so that I can help you further when you get it also.
I would think twice about reverting everything back to stock though. You are now in the right place, the shop you went to, to get your phone rooted was the wrong place! We are a friendly bunch for the most part so do some reading in the desire HD general section and you'll find some nice ROMs that are close to stock firmware but perform better. If they're not for you then feel free to flash the official ROM from your provider that I have linked to above.
Oh yeah, Welcome to XDA!
Thanks for that, How do i go about installing it, and will it completely revert the phone back to its original state so i can use the ota update and get the 2.3 gingerbread?
And thanks again for your help
Damnit, what I've linked to is actually someones backup of a stock 3 ROM so it won't be quite back to factory fresh. Let me do some digging, I'll be back.
EDIT: What exactly did the shop do, other than use visionary? You could try AMT tools from here and query the device info, that should at least let us know what they have and haven't done to the phone. I suspect that they have set a super CID hence why the update won't go through. Try AMT and report back.
Thankyou very much your help is appreciated.
Should i try the link you posted earlier??
Just use AMT tools that I linked to above in one of my edits and check the CID, If it is just the CID that has been altered, then you can use this tool to reflash a 3UK CID which is H3G__001
when i use AMT it says AMT is designed for use with Desire HD and Dsire z / G2 ONLY But i have a desire HD ????
Strange, is there an option to click OK or ignore?
EDIT: Weird, I just booted into windows and I get the same thing with AMT tools. Now I'm really confused. Try using the other tool that I linked to and see what that displays.
EDIT 2: Just had a thought. Pull your battery then put it back in. Hold 'down' on the volume rocker then press the power button. Your phone should start in the bootloader and we should be able to get some more info. Once you've done this, list everything that it says in the bootloader screen.
Sorry, my brain is a bit slow today for some reason.
Ok ill do that now, i have also just rooted my phone again using visionary (i followed the link in your earlier message. so its rooted again now. cant believe i paid £20-00 to have that done, it took me less than 5 minutes to do it

OK, so it would seem as though all they did was root it and leave most things intact, I think they must have changed your CID though probably using the jkoljo's radio S-OFF tool.
Run that tool and try to change your CID to whatever it was that I said before H3G__001 I think it was, or you could equally use that tool to get radio s-off super-CID and sim-unlock, then install ROM manager from the market, flash Clockwork Mod Recovery and then flash a custom ROM after making a backup of course.
The world is your lobster at this point and flashing new ROMs can be fun. I might have to re-flash my current ROM myself as I think I've screwed something up with it from messing around too much earlier today
i dont understand the open "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe'' where is that??
Please remember i am a complete noob when it comes to this, lol
i had to download the visionary app using my phone as my laptop kept saying it had a virus.
i have downloaded the premium rom manager app, can you recomend and good roms, or where i can get a list of them? also could you explain in noob terms how to change my phone so i can get the 2.3 update? the cid bit!!!
Thank you, you have been very helpfull.

I'm gonna point you to this thread as it has everything you could possibly want or need to know in it. There is a link there to a thread all about how to flash a ROM, what tools you need on your PC etc..
With regards to how to get 2.3 onto your phone pretty much every ROM you'll find in the DEV section is based on 2.3. That thread I've linked also has links to pretty much every ROM currently available for the DHD and everything is explained far better than I would be able to explain things.
The tool to get Super-CID, which really only helps when it comes to flashing Radio's (which is something I would avoid until you've found your feet a little, however it's worth doing now, as it is simple and relatively worry free) is at the bottom of this post.
Happy reading and just remember that as long as you read all the instructions for something before starting it and you feel comfortable with what the instructions are explaining, then you will succeed with your end goal.

You should extract them into one folder, then from there you should be able to double click the only thing that looks like a program icon. If nothing is happening it would suggest that you need to update your .NET framework. Do that by running windows update or going here.
Honestly....... the best thing to do would be to go here and read the basic setup bit so that your PC is ready for everything, and then read the rest of that little guide and it should hold your hand through the whole process.
im going to attempt a custom rom form the link you gave me (everything desire hd) do you have any recomendations??
Cyanogenmod is interesting as it more like stock Android, MIUI is similar to iOS and then you have the sense ROMs with tweaks and whatnot. Have a look at the options available in the screenshots and see what you like the look of, it's a very subjective thing as some like one thing and others like something else.
the link you gave me for the rado code was missing the important bit!
i managed to find it somewhere else

do you have to go through the root procedure every time you use the radio tool, or will it work every time after the phone is rooted. the reason i ask is that i just tried to do it and it said ''operation failed, probably connection'' ill try it again now

It usually fails the first time, I don't know why. After a reboot it worked for me, keep your phone screen on though as the package will request superuser permission.
That link is definitely not missing anything as I've downloaded and run it from that link several times, but maybe your download got corrupted.
Glad all seems well now anyway.
Hi all,
I love this forum as it's got so much useful info so have just joined as I'm a little unsure of a few things and would really appreciate any help/advice.
Firstly, the big question, can I downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1 on a T-Mobile UK branded device without risking losing the warranty (only got the phone in March - just in case any hardware defects as I had the camera break a month after I got the phone!). I have read numerous guides and they seem to be associated with rooting and what confuses me is the stock roms I'm finding are for 1.14 not 2.1?
The reason is because (there may be an answer to this somewhere but have searched loads and can't find it) the Webkit browser on 2.2 seems to constantly crash. I didn't have the issue on 2.1 and have had the phone repaired twice, the issue occurs straight after a factory reset and is definitely an issue with 2.2 on T-Mobile UK branded firmware at least. T-Mobile UK assured me it was fixed but it certainly isn't as it crashed twice (just disappeared) within 5 minutes of browsing and later in the evening came up with the 'force close' error when browsing.
I loved using the stock provided browser over Opera/Skyfire etc and it was fine on 2.1...
So I am wondering whether T-Mobile UK have just bodged the firmware and whether rooting/debranding would give me a very stable version of webkit?
I had this with my first Wildfire after upgrading in December 2010, after two repairs they couldn't fix it so swapped for a new phone in March. The new phone was fine on 2.1 and this issue occurred again straight after the OTA update of 2.2 last night.
I'm really hoping someone can help with the above?
Many thanks in advance
1.14 is the ROM version number, and, is actually Android 2.1. But, you will not be able to downgrade without root. (Atleast easily).
If you wish to take the complex way out to downgrading to 2.1 without rooting and stuff, you can refer this guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921752
Excellent, many thanks 3xeno. I'll have a go at that. I am tempted to try unbranded 2.2 firmware as by the sounds of it the browser crashing issue might be specific to T-Mobile UK. I can't find other people reporting this issue anywhere and its happened to me with two phones, after 2 repairs with ota updates twice and after multiple factory resets.
Do you use webkit and get any crashes at all? I've tried other browsers but prefer the webkit one when it works, would be great if it played flash content like YouTube etc but I'll do some more research on that...
try dolphin browser HD(has many add-on's) or opera Mobile ,these are the best in the line & opera min for more data saving efficiency
Thanks all, I am having a lot of trouble with the SuperOneClick part though.
I have S-ON on boot and the boot loader that ends in 001 does that affect the ability of SuperOneClick to do Temp Root?

Do I need to do S-OFF using Unrevoke or similar?
It shouldn't, since the procedure was performed on an official Froyo release on HBoot 1.01.0001. BTW, You have to press 'Shell Root', not 'Temp Root'. Further make sure USB Debugging and all is on, as the author states.
Hi 3xeno,
I can confirm debugging is on and it is Shell Root I am trying but it just seems to stick on that last stage for ages.
I have the goldcard in, does that matter?
I have also tried unmounting the SD Card as mentioned on another thread?
It shouldn't matter. But, I think this should help you out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16634853&postcount=139
If you check the 2 posts above it, the user was experiencing similar problems as yours. So, I believe that solution should help.
(That guide is to downgrade to a WWE (Non Branded ROM) with HBoot 1.01.0001, and the 1st step is essentially the same as what you are attempting to do - Downgrade Misc Partition and flash an 'older' ROM)
Good Luck
Thanks 3xeno, I ended up doing the revolutionary thing in those steps and it says S-OFF now with Revolutionary at the top.
I was then able to use a stock RUU and install 2.1 on the phone but it looks different in that the clock widget and icons on the main screen weren't there? It's supposed to be the T-Mobile UK v2.1 firmware I thought?
I thought I might as well use unrEVOKed to root it anyway but I wondered if it was possible to revert it back to the way it was using the factory RUU if I needed any warranty repairs? Would reverting back then change the bootloader screen or is that permanently changed by Revolutionary?

Revolutionary introduces a new userspace issue. It can be fixed by flashing this (Needs Clockworkmod, I hope you had selected Yes to installing Clockworkmod to Revolutionary) -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156713
To change your bootloader from the Revolutionary one, you will need the HBoot.nb0 file from your TMobile Eclair RUU. Once you obtain that, you will need to follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160251
So, essentially, once you perform this, you are back to factory stock, on a T-Mobile 2.1 ROM. (Essentially summing up my first post, its far easier to root and downgrade. )
Oh, and dont touch Unrevoked. Its not needed at all.
Many thanks 3xeno, really appreciate your help and such quick responses
I actually ended up with root (I think) as the super user icon is in there and I was able to do a nandroid backup on bootup.
Nice to be back to 2.1 though, I might leave it how it is at the moment and keep this info in mind to revert if needed for a warranty claim (fingers crossed it won't be a screen fault!).
One thing I'm really pleased about so far is that it doesn't seem to sync up immediately with my google account and fill my people list with a load of random e-mail addresses which is something I didn't like before.
So far so good, I'll have some fun playing with root now...
Thanks again
Cheers mate.
BTW, You can go to People > Menu Key > View > Check 'Only show Contacts with Phone Numbers'. It may not have synced immediately, but, it will, sooner or later.
EDIT: Did you flash the Sense Fix? If not, then, HTC Setup Wizard (The startup guide which greets you first thing when you boot up after a factory reset) will not work, implying that your Google Account is not setup on the phone. (Or, you'll have to do it manually.) Probably, that's why, its not syncing.
