Can anyone help me put original ROM back on my DHD - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, and thanks in advance for anyone who can help.
I have a desire hd phone, witch I love anyways I had it rooted a few months ago by a local phone shop, but I didn’t really see the benefit from it, in fact it caused problems so I performed a full factory reset within a few days, and thought that was the end of it.
Anyways my phone received the option to update to the 2.3 gingerbread on Monday, it downloads fine, and then when the install starts it freezes at about 20% of the way thorough.
I have contacted HTC several times about it, they say the phone will not update if it’s been rooted and I have to send it back to them to have it re-flashed, one person said it would cost £30, another said £200 so I would rather not send it to them. the last guy I spoke to was very helpful, he said it was possible for me to reflash the phone to its original ''shipped'' state, and if I joined a help forum I could possibly get some help, but he was unable to advise me on this., so here I am!!!
I received the phone new in January and it has had no updates until the one on Moday, and it was rooted using visionary a few months ago, I have performed several factory restores since then.
Current software is:
android version 2.2
baseband version 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_m
build number 1.37.771.3 CL290190
software number 1.37.771.3
im in the uk, and on the 3 network
Many thanks,
Jamie

Hey dude, this link should help. I'm currently downloading it so that I can help you further when you get it also.
I would think twice about reverting everything back to stock though. You are now in the right place, the shop you went to, to get your phone rooted was the wrong place! We are a friendly bunch for the most part so do some reading in the desire HD general section and you'll find some nice ROMs that are close to stock firmware but perform better. If they're not for you then feel free to flash the official ROM from your provider that I have linked to above.
Oh yeah, Welcome to XDA!

Thanks for that, How do i go about installing it, and will it completely revert the phone back to its original state so i can use the ota update and get the 2.3 gingerbread?
And thanks again for your help

Damnit, what I've linked to is actually someones backup of a stock 3 ROM so it won't be quite back to factory fresh. Let me do some digging, I'll be back.
EDIT: What exactly did the shop do, other than use visionary? You could try AMT tools from here and query the device info, that should at least let us know what they have and haven't done to the phone. I suspect that they have set a super CID hence why the update won't go through. Try AMT and report back.

Thankyou very much your help is appreciated.

Should i try the link you posted earlier??

Just use AMT tools that I linked to above in one of my edits and check the CID, If it is just the CID that has been altered, then you can use this tool to reflash a 3UK CID which is H3G__001

when i use AMT it says AMT is designed for use with Desire HD and Dsire z / G2 ONLY But i have a desire HD ????

Strange, is there an option to click OK or ignore?
EDIT: Weird, I just booted into windows and I get the same thing with AMT tools. Now I'm really confused. Try using the other tool that I linked to and see what that displays.
EDIT 2: Just had a thought. Pull your battery then put it back in. Hold 'down' on the volume rocker then press the power button. Your phone should start in the bootloader and we should be able to get some more info. Once you've done this, list everything that it says in the bootloader screen.
Sorry, my brain is a bit slow today for some reason.

Ok ill do that now, i have also just rooted my phone again using visionary (i followed the link in your earlier message. so its rooted again now. cant believe i paid £20-00 to have that done, it took me less than 5 minutes to do it

OK, so it would seem as though all they did was root it and leave most things intact, I think they must have changed your CID though probably using the jkoljo's radio S-OFF tool.
Run that tool and try to change your CID to whatever it was that I said before H3G__001 I think it was, or you could equally use that tool to get radio s-off super-CID and sim-unlock, then install ROM manager from the market, flash Clockwork Mod Recovery and then flash a custom ROM after making a backup of course.
The world is your lobster at this point and flashing new ROMs can be fun. I might have to re-flash my current ROM myself as I think I've screwed something up with it from messing around too much earlier today

i dont understand the open "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe'' where is that??
Please remember i am a complete noob when it comes to this, lol
i had to download the visionary app using my phone as my laptop kept saying it had a virus.
i have downloaded the premium rom manager app, can you recomend and good roms, or where i can get a list of them? also could you explain in noob terms how to change my phone so i can get the 2.3 update? the cid bit!!!
Thank you, you have been very helpfull.

I'm gonna point you to this thread as it has everything you could possibly want or need to know in it. There is a link there to a thread all about how to flash a ROM, what tools you need on your PC etc..
With regards to how to get 2.3 onto your phone pretty much every ROM you'll find in the DEV section is based on 2.3. That thread I've linked also has links to pretty much every ROM currently available for the DHD and everything is explained far better than I would be able to explain things.
The tool to get Super-CID, which really only helps when it comes to flashing Radio's (which is something I would avoid until you've found your feet a little, however it's worth doing now, as it is simple and relatively worry free) is at the bottom of this post.
Happy reading and just remember that as long as you read all the instructions for something before starting it and you feel comfortable with what the instructions are explaining, then you will succeed with your end goal.

You should extract them into one folder, then from there you should be able to double click the only thing that looks like a program icon. If nothing is happening it would suggest that you need to update your .NET framework. Do that by running windows update or going here.
Honestly....... the best thing to do would be to go here and read the basic setup bit so that your PC is ready for everything, and then read the rest of that little guide and it should hold your hand through the whole process.

im going to attempt a custom rom form the link you gave me (everything desire hd) do you have any recomendations??

Cyanogenmod is interesting as it more like stock Android, MIUI is similar to iOS and then you have the sense ROMs with tweaks and whatnot. Have a look at the options available in the screenshots and see what you like the look of, it's a very subjective thing as some like one thing and others like something else.

the link you gave me for the rado code was missing the important bit!
i managed to find it somewhere else

do you have to go through the root procedure every time you use the radio tool, or will it work every time after the phone is rooted. the reason i ask is that i just tried to do it and it said ''operation failed, probably connection'' ill try it again now

It usually fails the first time, I don't know why. After a reboot it worked for me, keep your phone screen on though as the package will request superuser permission.
That link is definitely not missing anything as I've downloaded and run it from that link several times, but maybe your download got corrupted.
Glad all seems well now anyway.

AAARRRRHHHH HELP! I'm going to cry...

(RESOLVED!!)
Ok, so keeping it as short as possible. Brand new HTC desire on Orange UK. Full of all that Orange junk. Unrevoked root on it, all dandy. Spend at least an hour trying to figure out (I know google is my friend) why all the E:Can't nonsense was happening any time I tried making a back-up or flashing a ROM.
I moved onto alpha rev S-off solution at this point. Ran it, worked fine till part 3 then got the 'failed but don't worry it's not bricked'. Turn it back on and I've got a white HTC screen with black lines on normal startup, but POWER + VOL D works ok, but still S-on and and all the "E:Can't..." nonsense.
At this point I'm sitting in my onesie with a massive headache having not moved since about 1800 04/12/10, and now 12 hours later I've finally learnt my lesson, research as much as I can (thankyou google) and then ask any questions you cant find answers for before I plunge/stumble into another barbed and bear trapped solution.
So question is if I follow the recovery method used by Bubach28 and a few others, using .zips of the ROM the desire shipped with will it all go grand? My concern is that I didn't unbrand my desire. It's rooted but I didn't bother unbranding it. So now will I be able to use any old stock ROM or am I scuppered because I cant find an Orange specific zip or an Orange RUU?
I blame Oranges stupid 2.****e F-yo(u) version of Sense and my own stupidity equally on this one. Help and advice MUCH appreciated, otherwise I have a nice shiny new alternative for the spork I've always wanted.
Sorry for double posting this. I thought I'd make a new post as the one I had it in is quite off the original topic after 150 pages, and this being specific to orange based folks like me it wouldn't be of much use to many others.
(RESOLVED and happy as a pig in ****e for it!!)
Well as you said your phone is branded, therefore if you intend to run a non-orange RUU you will have to use a goldcard, then you can literally flash any ruu you want and you wont have any problems ... so for instance you could flash a WWE RUU and then start the rooting process again.
(Search the forum abit for how to create a goldcard)
The Orange RUU has never been released but I know someone who might be about to change all that...its a harsh lesson but it's another example of needing to research before jumping blindly into something they don't understand
Sleep... finally!

Not as harsh a reply as my bear head thought it was when i first read it. Lol. Only just awake. 7 hours sleep is very refreshing. Unfortunately I didn't read far enough ahead to realised that S-off worked on only very specific PVT4 Desires. Ah well. At least I'm not all lost. Let the Goldcard research commence! I'll post back when I sort it out.
Thanks RaymondErasmus and EddyOS.
Out of curiousity EddyOS, who could change that? And is it already available or a work in progress? I'm going to go down the goldcard route regardless as I don't want to be staring at Oranges bloaty demo and charged apps all the time, but somebody migght find it useful yet.

Ok, so I took it a bit easier today. Slept well and nursed my flu ridden fiancee, but pottered away over the day at goldcard etc. So from what i've been able to gather so far is that on orange the only thing I can really start with is an early version of the standard sense ROM, anything with 1.15 on it because anything later causes major hassle with the radio bit.
I've searched around and again Bubach28 has had the same issue so her entries have helped alot. Problem is now I can't get a decent .zip with an early ROM on it. Bubach28 used one off shipped-roms .com but the only one I'm able to download is a much later release from early november, and even when I do try and flash it as the PB99IMG.zip it comes back with the error...
CID incorrect!

Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No
... and every other one wont complete the download. They all time out or freeze. It's probably my internet connection but anyway. Does anyone have any files that are stable and useable? The CID error made me think I'd messed up the goldcard bit but I redid it a few times and on a few different cards, including the one that came in the Desire (which most people said was the only one that worked for them, although i read other posts that said that micro sdhc didn't work at all so that was confusing too as the one you get is a samsung 4gb micro sdhc) and besides based on the tutorial on the unlockr it should be fine.
So anyway, does anybody have a torrent or an upload on rapidshare of something like PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.0
6.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip or something earlier? Should I be using a specific md5 checksum for downloading these .zip files? Or equally is there anyway to run the RUU.exe whilst limited to bootloader and recovery? I've tried a few different ways and searched a fair bit for solutions but I can't quite find the answer.
Idea? I'm sorry if the answer is staring me in the face or if I've missed that one thread in my flicking between them too quickly.
Ive recently flashed the following WWE RUU successfully.
This was done after the latest Orange OTA upset my rooted phone.
Run the RUU with the phone in the fastboot menu.

Enter fastboot in hboot ... the computer should be able to pick up the device and then you will be able to run the normal RUU.exe or you could do the PB99IMG flash method. It doesnt really matter ... use the method that you feel more comfortable with!
As far as trying to go as far back as 1.21 ... this isnt really necessary and might even cause problems ... you can load the latest WWE 2.29 ... As a RUU flashes Radio, Kernal everything. (Seeing as you say you have a working goldcard i see no real reason why you cant do this )
Ta-da!
Right, so I'm all done and dusted and very happy.
I honestly couldn't tell you where I went wrong so many times with the gold card business but here's how I did it in the end.
After trying the unlockr method and various others (all using the Android SDK) I found a very useful program called GoldCardTool (find it at hxxp://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/)
Tried with a 2gb sandisk but couldn't get it going, so like many people have said I just went for the stock samsung 4gb sdhc that came with the phone, and it worked first time. I opted for the PB99IMG.zip (I can't for the life of me remember where I got the .zip and it's renamed now but the .txt file tells me it's a 2.29.405.2 rom) method as opposed to running the RUU.exe as I had been having trouble with that before it ever got to a point where it mattered if my goldcard was done right or not.
Also, anyone worrying about Orange radio bit making your phone lock, i've not had any problems yet, so as RaymondErasmus said, just go for the latest one.
Very happy to be free of all the orange bloatware.
Thanks to RaymondErasmus, EddyOS and mikep99. Legends!
Excellent. Make sure you keep hold of the PB99.img file for in the future. You never know when it might come in handy.

[Q] A few questions before rooting

Hey guys, first time poster here and a bit of a newb to rooting, Android and smart-phones in general.
I've been hanging on these forums the past 3 months researching the rooting process for a Desire and all the relevant stuff that goes along with it. So please go easy on me. I've also read all the 'similar threads' suggested to me at post-time.
I'm almost ready to begin the process but there's a few bits of information that's got me pretty scared before I go ahead. I wasn't able to find much of a concrete answer/s to these questions, from Googling around.
Well without further ado.
What is the difference between GSM & CDMA and do I need to know which my phone is before proceeding?
If I DO need to know, how do I find this out?
My phone is branded (Orange splash-screen at boot) and locked to Orange network (Newly recieved contract phone).
I've heard that I may need a goldcard to proceed with the Unrevoked process due to the branding. Is this correct?
Another guide on the net (can provide link if necessary), mentions upgrading the radio on Orange phones can permanently break the wifi OR permanently simlock your phone.
Will I need to worry about this during the Unrevoked rooting process? And will this be avoidable after installing a custom rom. (If I get that far )
I read somewhere on these forums (I forgot where exactly), something about the newest Orange OTA update causing problems with the rooting process. Is this still the case or has Unrevoked been updated to avoid that now? Also, how can I check if I have that update?
I can provide all the information about my Hboot, radio and kernel versions etc, if you need it (I guess you will), but for some reason, I keep getting a spam warning as this is my first post. I can only assume the version numbers are being interpreted as IPs...
Well sorry for the wall of text, but I greatly appreciate any help I can get regarding these issues. I'm so scared of bricking my Desire and not being able to return it, if bricking does occur.
Yours a worried root newb!
1. We use GSM phones in the UK as we use SIM cards. CDMA phones don't use SIM cards and are locked/released to one network
2. You don't need a gold card to root, no. As there isn't an Orange RUU available to go back to stock for warranty you will need one to flash a non-Orange RUU. Best to make one before starting
3. This was the case a while back but I'd wait for confirmation before changing it
4. No as the radio isn't flashed during a ROM (unless stated in the ROM thread that it does)
5. Shouldn't be an issue, just get the latest version of unrEVOked from their website before starting
Great, that's most of my questions/concerns answered. Although the below answer has brought a new question to the front

then how can I do this? Or am I totally misunderstanding you?
Do I somehow use an application without root permission to perform a procedure similar to hdd ghosting?
Basically, if you wanted to return to stock for any reason you wouldn't be able to go back to the Orange ROM as the RUU doesn't exist so you'd have to go to a generic ROM. To flash any ROM other than the originally on the phone you need a gold card
It's the same for me, if (for some strange reason) I'd want to flash a branded ROM on my Desire I'd need a gold card. Thankfully, I have an unbranded handset so I can get the stock RUU and use it without a gold card

So basically if I were to screw it up, which I hopefully won't, I'm buggered as far as getting my phone fixed cos they'll see the Orange rom is no longer installed? Not too fussed about that, as I'm super-careful with my phone.
I guess my next issue would be, after rooting using Unrevoked, I'd need to gain S-OFF right? Which I understand is done via AlphaRev. Only issue there would be related to this
"Please revert to a rooted stock ROM if possible. Your /data partition is used for temporary storage of important files." If I'm reverting to a stock rom, while gaining S-OFF presumably there's a high chance that'd upgrade my radio - a potentially very bad thing.
THEN I go about choosing a rom to flash. Then Nandroid backup. Then flash the rom, hopefully love it and voila?
Also, what would you suggest as a good rom for someone like me just starting out with a fully rooted phone? I was thinking one of the official builds to lose all the crap, but then the above issue of the radio creeps up again...
I have been flashing ROM's since I got my phone rooted last year and I have never bothered to S-OFF. It's not a requirement.
I have tried a number of ROM's (it becomes a bit addictive!) there is not normally a need to flash a new radio, just leave it be. If you are worried about it and the ROM requires a new radio don't flash it. There are plenty to choose from.
As for recommendations, everyone has their own tastes and likes. That's the beauty of modding. Just flash a few ROM's and see which you like. I have tried most of them, stuck with MIUI for ages, but am now on Cyanogenmod 7 Nightly's.
There is nothing to really worry about. There is a remote chance of bricking your phone for a start, like 0.0000000001% chance. Only way of doing it is disconnecting during say an S-Off.
As for the Orange issue. I had a locked, Orange Desire with 2.2 on it (the first update) and when I rooted and S-Off'd I had no problems. I also have updated my radio to 5.14.05.17 and have no issues at all. To be honest, I found issues to do with signals and Wi-Fi are to do with the ROM you install and the kernel as well which can be frustrating but fun as well.
As for choosing a ROM, choose one, flash it then see what it's like. It's purely down to what you like most about each ROM. I've been through so many ROMs in the past few months but now I am sort of staying with 1 ROM. I will say that when I installed a custom ROM, I had to pay to unlock my sim because it was being gay and Orange wanted £20 of my hard earned cash to unlock it and send it off. So be prepared.

Don't bother about S-OFF at the moment, you don't need it. Just get rooted and then look into custom ROMs for now
Ok I've taken a tiny step further forward. I'm at the point of making a goldcard but one thing concerns me... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6710085&postcount=3 According to that it won't work with the 2.2 OTA update from HTC.
I know, I have 2.2 installed but this was already on the phone when I received it, so I've no idea if this was an OTA or not... So I guess I need a different method to make a goldcard now?
Use this:
http://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/
Probably need to register to get the file, though
Hmmm tried using that tool and no joy... Get my img file downloaded, but then the tool refuses to recognise my phone, despite doing the appropriate change over to 'disk drive'. I tried re-plugging the un-mounting and re-plugging the usb cable. Still no joy.
I'm beginning to lose hope here... That tool won't work and the tutorial here says it's incompatible with 2.2...
**edit**
Been Googling around a fair bit and I can't find any information at all on downgrading a branded 2.2. Only information on people with branded handsets wanting to update to 2.2.
After a bit more searching, I found someone else with the exact same issue as me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10370443&postcount=977
Only one difference though. He doesn't mention if he managed to flash a custom rom after his root. I'm guessing he probably wouldn't have been able to going by your post:

A gold card is only needed to flash a STOCK ROM different from your original - it's not needed to flash a custom ROM. The gold card isn't even needed to root. It's just handy to have in your case as you'd need it to go back to stock due to the lack of an Orange RUU
I'm out of ideas I'm afraid, never had to deal with a gold card as I'm unbranded
Use this:

Does that work a lot better then?
I used the method posted by thetasigma3 and I can't get OTA 2.29.405.5 but I can get 2.29.405.2. To get round the problem I installed the 2.29.405.5 RUU and rooted
Anyone who's debranded will need to use the RUU as the OTA won't go through

I will say that when I installed a custom ROM, I had to pay to unlock my sim because it was being gay and Orange wanted £20 of my hard earned cash to unlock it and send it off. So be prepared.

Call me crazy, but why the heck would flashing a custom rom require you to unlock and send off? Presumably the sending off thing would've been for Orange to perform the unlock procedure?
Anyway, back to my main issue, I know I've probably tread the same ground a few times now, but I really don't wanna end up bricking, cos I overlooked a tiny element, or something.
Could someone confirm I have these points all correct please?
Goldcard NOT needed for rooting.
Goldcard NOT needed if/when I flash a custom rom.
Goldcard needed if I wanted to go back to a STOCK rom.
Only reason to flash a STOCK rom is if I need to send back to Orange for repairs etc.
Oh and thanks for the clarification on your earlier post EddyOS. About goldcards not being needed for custom roms as opposed to stock etc.
Think I'm ready to go ahead with the process now, but if I go ahead and something goes wrong, what's my safety net, so to speak? Presumably my battery would die on me long before I get a response here
What you have there is correct (point 2-5)
The unlocking issue was down to some radios causing Orange handsets to become SIM locked. If you're using an Orange SIM this isn't an issue but others who got an Orange handset but use a different SIM card found they wouldn't work.
This was earlier in the Desire's life and I don't think it's applicable now
Try using "GoldCard Helper" app from Android Market, in case you want to try and make a goldcard (as the other methods did not work for you).
As mentioned as EddyOS, all your points from 2 - 5 are correct.
Ok finally got the guts together to go ahead and run unRevoked. (Already had done the driver steps etc).
I've checked with an app from the Android Market, called 'Root Check' to verify root access. That's saying I do have it and it also asked for Root permissions on start-up, which it never did before root. So I assume that's a good sign. I also checked for the 'Superuser Permissions' app in my apps menu. Found it was present and clicked it. Started without any problems. So I guess that's another good sign.
So I guess my next set of questions are reasonable simple.
Does this seem like my phone is now 100% rooted? I think it is, but I could be wrong.
Do I need to install Busybox? Root Checker seems to like seeing it there.
Does it matter if I use Titanium Backup Pro or free? I'm guessing it won't but I'd like to be certain.
If I backup my current Orange rom with Titanium Backup will I be able to go back to that without a goldcard? My guess is no. I didn't make or use one for the root process.
1. Yes
2. For Titanium Backup, yes
3. No
4. You don't backup the ROM with TB, you boot into Recovery and do it there

Hey man, I downloaded that app and found a fairly easy looking guide on the Unlockr http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/ . Just wanted to check, if I use that app plus this guide. I skip steps 1-6 right?
Ok gone ahead and done that now. Just having some trouble finding instructions on backing up my Orange rom.
Oh and now that the forum won't grumble at my phone info, here it is. Hopefully that'll shed some more light on my situation, if I need further help.

Confirm that I bricked my phone please?

... before i shell out for another phone because I'm an idiot.
Anyway, I'd been doing some reading and had a thin history of rooting with my G1 which went rather well.(in that I never bricked it)
I did the same with my phone now, the G2. I got it when it first came out, got comfortable with it and finally decided to root it. I guess I didn't do enough research because I used Visionary to root and I believe I am now bricked. I have been up and down the forums for a solution or even a confirmation that I'm bricked for the last 4 hours. I kid you not. I even went into different phone sections in case I found something that could help but zilch.
So yell at me for not doing enough research and reading before i started rooting, but don't yell about this same question being asked over and over again.
Anyways, I can only get to the first white "HTC" screen and freezes.
I can get to HBOOT and that says:
Vision PVT SHIP S-ON
H-Boot-0.02.0000
Microp-0425
Radio-26.03.02.26_M
cMMC-boot
HBOOT
If I try to go to recovery it goes to that little black phone with the red traingle.
If I try to go to factory reset it goes to a green circle with a load bar that just looks like it's working but then it goes back to the white HTC screen and stays.
I have SDK and even though my computer recognizes that an Android 1.0 device is attached, when I "adb devices", nothing is listed.
So what's my diagnoses pros?
Thanks for any help or any response at all in advance.
Dea.
Its not looking good my friend, what exactly have you done to your phone so far?
If it is stuck in a boot loop and you have S-on the only possible thing you can to do fix it is flash the stock PC10IMG, but this will only work if you had the pre-OTA rom on your phone 1.19 and I really doubt that you did. If you had the wifi calling app you had the OTA 1.22 rom not the 1.19 rom. Trying to flash the stock PC10IMG onto your phone if it had the OTA rom 1.22 will cause it to do exactly what is happening now.
There's a file called "pc10img.zip" (the default firmware) that can be placed in the root of your SD, and should automatically be detected and offer to start flashing. I think this is how I recovered my phone which was in a similar state. Someone here could probably link you to the proper file (I'm sure there's different versions for DZ and G2). Good luck...I think you can probably save it.
I'm pretty sure mine was doing the same thing yours is, and I'm happily rockin' CM7 now, and loving it more than ever.
@joemm, Well I had 1.22 on there since I remember having wifi calling. I know you advised me not to but I might look into the PC10img.zip just because it can't get much worse than this honestly.
@hexapus, thanks for the advise. I'll have to look for my sdcard adapter first though. can't seem to find it at the mo'.
And when it does its sd card check on HBOOT, by the way, it says that all the files it wants to load, it says "No image!"

Thats because its looking for the file named PC10IMG.zip, this is the only file name it will load and it must be on the root of your sdcard.
Check your PM i will message you right now.
This is a link to a page containing instructions for a manual update to 1.22 and a link to the update.zip. Maybe this will work if all else fails by applying the OTA update again.
http://www.talkandroid.com/20232-tutorial-manually-update-t-mobile-g2-remove-google-goggles/
You might be able to hex edit the pc10img.zip so it thinks its version 1.22.

I also had this same issue, in that I tried visionary and had the same issue. I took mine to the tmobile store and let try to fix it, which they couldn't, and when they asked me what happened I said I was uninstalling an app that was a live screen because it was acting werid. Because I was still under warrenty they help me get a new one sent to me.
Worked out for me, now I read and read and read more. I am rooted via rage and gfree but still run stock.
Good luck

Well, everyone, after further button pushing, it looks like I can get into stock recovery. Should I do a wipe and flash a manual update of 1.22? The only reason I ask at this point is that if I try to do this, fail and then try to get it replaced, they might see that I tried to root and not replace it. (I have insurance as well btw.)

It won't let you apply the 1.22 update zip because it is not a full rom, people have tried before and it doesn't work, but I guess like you said what have you got to lose.

joe, check out the second part of that link I provided above. The part about those with the google goggles fix. Do you think that would be a good second choice? I don't know if the OP knows how to do a fastboot flash, but it seems like it is more comprehensive. Do you think that it would reverse the effects of the Visionary perm root attempt?

At this point for him I don't see how its gonna hurt to try, but in my experiences in this forum I have not seen anyone able to flash the update 1.22 .zip after being stuck in a S-On Bootloop. Its either gonna work or it wont let him flash it at all, so I really cant see how it could hurt to try. As far as the 1.19 rom it wont let him flash it because it will give a error that the main version is older.

[Q] Desire Z first time root questions, please help

Hi, I am have just got my HTC Desire Z/Vision and I am very new to rooting.
I checked on a lot of thread on how to root, s-off the phone before I can install custom ROM.
Some of the tread mention that I need to do firmware downgrade if my device has firmware version higher than 1.34, but I am not sure on my version and therefore I include my information below.
What is the easier way to root my phone?
If I use gfree, do I need to downgrade my firmware? Is there any side effect when I downgrade my firmware?
If I use VISIONary, do I need to downgrade my firmware?
Do I need to do S-Off in order to install custom ROM? or is rooting enough?
Hell a lot of question but I hope you guys can help me out with it.

First, welcome to the boards, it's always nice to welcome people into the world of rooting and flashing (the android kind!).
To start, you will have to get ADB installed and working. To do this, download the Android SDK from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html . make sure you have the Java SDK and JDK installed as well as the Android SDK requires that as a requirement.
Based on your information, you have the 1.82 system software and will need to downgrade. I am not 100% sure if this guide will be applicable to you since it was written for the 1.72, but look at this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
The above guide will help you in downgrading to 1.34, gaining root with gfree/rage, SIM-Unlock and S-OFF, installing ClockWordMod (a.k.a CWM) and flashing a new and shiny ROM for you.
I can completely understand how confusing alot of these guides can be, I spent about 3 hours trying to do the same thing as you a month ago. A year ago, I did the same thing with my old HTC Hero! So if you have any questions, just ask away. XDA is a great community.
Have fun
Thank you for your reply. It does help me to go through the right direction.
Understood that I need to downgrade my build to 1.34, but is there any major difference between my current build and the older build?
After following the guide to downgrade and install CWM, will it also allow me to backup my current official ROM?
As I love HTC Sense too much such a pity that I need to let it go. I am thinking of flashing back to the official ROM when I have the need to.
XDA is indeed to a great community. Great helps from great people

There are alot of fixes and improvements that HTC made between the 1.34 version and the newest 1.84 version. Those would be found with HTC in their changelogs. Also, each of these upgrades breaks the root access that the devs have created. Similar to that of iOS breaking each jailbreak method with each new version of iOS that is released (you will understand this analogy if you have an iPod Touch or something along those lines).
After gaining root, SIM-Unlock and S-OFF, installing CWM would allow you to perform a NANDroid backup (an EXACT image of your current installed ROM) so that you can go back to it at a later time.
If you are like myself (and seems that you are) you love how HTC's Sense overlay works and it just gets you. Keeps things simple while being infinitely customizable. When you do get around to flashing, I would recommend Virtuous as your ROM of choice. It is what I am running right now with no ill effects. The link to Virtuous is in my signature below.
If this is your first time flashing a custom ROM on an Android device, I can promise you that you will NEVER have a reason to go back to the stock ROM unless your phone is damaged physically and needs warranty repair. Even then, it is sometimes cheaper and easier for you to order the parts online and DIY your repairs (did it for my brother's BB Storm when he broke the screen).
Going back to my Hero, I have the stock Android 1.5 image saved somewhere, but I have never had to go back to it. Always found another newer/better custom ROM to flash. With my current DZ, I was fortunate enough to have stumbled onto Virtuous.
Have fun!
Yes, you're right. I like HTC Sense so I don't know if I will get used to the custom ROM without it.
I have checked on the Virtuous ROM previously and I will give it a try.
Yes, I saw plenty of decent ROM, they have nice UI but as you know first time rooting does give me goosebumps.
Will try it and I hope everything goes smooth.
Thanks a lot for your kind explanation, it does save me time in putting up all the pieces together
I bumped into a problem as I try to downgrade my firmware.
I followed the guide on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 and I encountered error on step 11, when the phone goes into bootloader mode and tries to scan PC10IMG.zip file that I copied into the SDCard.
It said 'CID' incorrect!, Update Fail!
Anybody knows why I might have this issue? Is this because of the firmware difference as mentioned by Athrun88?

As stated in the thread you are using to downgrade, your CID must be one of the following:
g4rb4g3 said:
If your INFOCID is NOT one of these you need to make a goldcard to downgrade!

IF its not in the above list you must make a gold card first then use the thread that you listed to downgrade. To check your CID run the following commands:

There is a link in the thread you listed on how to make a gold card. The method you are trying is comfirmed to also work with 1.82. So the reason you are having problems is NOT because your on 1.82 firmware, more than likely your CID is not listed above. Solution = GOLDCARD.
Thank you for the reply.
I have looked into the Goldcard method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832503) and actually spent my time trying to accomplish the result.
Part 1 and part 2 are pretty straightforward but now I bumped into another problem when I tried to do part 3 as it requires me to have root access to execute the command.
I have tried to get the root access by following methods from different threads such as using rage (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228).
For this method, I tried to do temp root and I am stucked on step 5. After launching 'Terminal Emulator' and running 'rage'. I can't seem to run the 'Terminal Emulator' again. When I launched it, it Force Closes. Tried to launch it again, my phone just displayed black screen and keys doesn't seem to be responding not till I off and on the phone (not reboot).
I also tried to use Visionary too but doesn't seem to have any luck.
Is there any other method I can try to get the root access?
Another question is after I followed Part 1 of the steps in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832503, when I boot up my computer, I can't seem to go to Windows. I am sure I selected physical disk instead of logical disk but I don't know why this happen. Anybody encounter the same problem?
I'm currently in the situation of wanting to root and S-off my Desire Z in order to update, either to official or (more likely) Virtuous ROM.
However before I do so I have a couple of questions.
1) How do I back up everything on my phone? I know my contacts and calendar will be fine as they are from my google account, also my email will be ok as that is also my google account. Photos etc I can just copy to my PC but what about all the apps I've installed, and my progress in them, my pair bluetooth devices, my wifi access points, my mesage apn settings etc etc?
I have tried Titanium Backup but not having paid for the full version, the info it gives you is a little limited so i'm not sure what it's backed up etc?
2) I currently have root via using Visionary, do I need to unroot and then go through the process with all the adb stuff? Also, will i need to uninstall the SuperUser I have installed?
3) I think my ADB is setup as I managed to get it to boot the phone into the bootloader, but when Itried to check my INFOCID using
Code:
fastboot oem boot
I got an error message saying that fastboot was not a recognised function (or something similar to that) Is this a problem?
ANy help really really appreciated as I am a total newb with Android but would love to move to a more up-to-date software version as I am currently on 1.34.
Thanks in advance.

You could wait until HTC releases a OTA update for your phone. Or as a alternative and avoiding being impatient, you could do a lot of reading and learning on this site to apply a custom rom. It is not that difficult at all, but do not expect a step by step walking trough the minute you ask for something here.

Wow, thanks for your helpful post...
I've done loads of reading on the forum and have gone rather round in circles. I think I know what I'm doing but seeing as someone else who is new to it had posted a thread I thought I'd also ask a couple of questions that I had which were pertinent to the discussion, to firstly find out for myself and secondly to help anyone else that might be finding the thread otherwise useful.
I think I have sorted the abd problem I was having, it seems that various tools have moved to different folders in the latest version of the android sdk so when I was trying the "fastboot" line it was nt findint fastboot.exe as it was in a different folder.
Secondly I'm fairly happy to give the gfre stuff a whirl but before I do I just wanted a little confirmation about backing everything up...not a huge ask really and fairly essential I would say!

You can use Astro File Explorer to back up your apps, Call Logs Backup and SMS backup will backup the sms threads and call logs or if you want to spend a couple of bucks Root explorer works well for me also. Once you have CWM you can make a Nandroid backup and will have an exact image of you phone at that point in time that you can go back to. I am waiting for my DZ to arrive and currently using an Inspire and 2 Captivates that other than minor differences in the procedures the backup maintenance is the same. The problem is that if you downgrade to a rom that allows CWM you cant back up the existing newer one. There are copies of it out there though. Just be careful if trying to go back to it and read carefully as I understand there are possible problems going back if the correct procedures are not followed. Good luck to you and as the previous poster stated about educating yourself, I fully agree. Read until you understand then read again to make sure you are not missing something. Follow directions EXACTLY and it usually avoids problems.
Sorry I see you are on 1.34 which I think means that once you get S-Off and root you can download rom manager from the market, install clockworkmod and you will be good to go with Nandroid backups.

I'm comfortable manipulating adb, I haven't been able to find and adb push guide that works though, and my understanding is I need S-OFF to accomplish anything of the sort. The only root method I've been able to find so far is Unrevoked, and no matter what I do, it's not working. Help, please?

Hmmm. Seems legit. Implementing now, will check back shortly.
Good luck, cmlusco is very good with the technical aspects so post any troubles in that thread and I'm sure someone will assist you.
I feel like a mad scientist. It's ALIVE!! Seriously, exactly what I needed. Thank you very much!
More than happy to point you in the right direction!
Another question. I'm trying to flash the OTA cleaned up update to see if I want to try to deal with that or just go to CM 7 and now the phone crashes HBOOT if I do anything but try to boot. Any idea what could cause this, or how I can flash HBOOT and CW Recovery? I try to select Factory Reset, Clear Data, Recovery, doesn't matter, I get the white HTC Incredible screen, a black bar appears somewhere on the screen, it moves around from one try to another, then black screen with two thin white bars on either side. I'm lost...
I think the ruu can restore hboot
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
Hmmm.
Update: Tried that. Can't get anything in HBOOT to function long enough to re-flash the RUU, much less another ROM. Any other ideas?

The saga... continues. So I got the "new" dinc rooted, finally, after MUCH help and much thanks from the fantastic community here.
Fast forward to yesterday. Been having some issues with the touch screen. Randomly, without me actually touching the buttons, the home, search or back buttons would hit... themselves. It was weird and yesterday I decided I'd had enough. Call up Big Red, explain the issues, get a warranty replacement for my warranty replacement... Just got it in. Try to root. Same issues as before. Unrevoked says the firmware is too new. So, I refer back to this wonderful thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258 Only to hit a brick wall in HTC's dev site. Their unlock bootloader portion is displaying "We are sorry, but this section of site is temporarily closed." So I just got off the phone with HTC America and the very nice lady said she would find out what was going on and call me back.
In the meantime... Any OTHER ideas how I can get root, since the two methods I was familiar with previously are now a no go? Because, let's be serious here, this phone is just about useless to me unless I can get it rooted. I can't live with all this bloatware on my phone I tell you!
You cant get root untill you get the bootloader unlocked.
Well, crappola.
Htc dev site seems to be working fine now, i just checked.
Nope. http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ still displays- We are sorry, but this section of site is temporarily closed.
edit: if this is different for you, PLEASE let me know! I'll try my home IP, use a proxy out of California, hell, a proxy out of Russia if I can get it working!

Working great for me, it let me go all the way to the part where you paste the code you get from the phone, wich is the seccond to last step.
