It's due to Kitkat's new security or whatever. This is a known occurrence. You have to just use the internal SD unfortunately because no one has released a recovery for our phone that can bypass this security thing.

Personally, I've used those two recoveries and I still cant use external sd with Kitkat... not sure why. I had access with Jellybean though. And I have fixed Kitkat permissions using SDfix too.
Also with Kitkat, they are notorious for getting you stuck in recovery bootloops, where no matter what, your phone only boots into recovery. Thats why the Kitkat recovery was released (the one that installs via its own apk. Not the Freegee version), but it doesnt give access to the external sd.
Anyway, to the OP, feel free to try the Madmack and Philz recoveries, but if you get stuck in a recovery bootloop, supposedly the fix is to reflash the recovery.
EDIT; You know what? Those two recoveries COULD have been updated without my knowledge. I ladt tried them within 2 weeks of KK being released for the e980. After that, I settled on the "Kitkat recovery" and lived with the internal sd. Once I got my phone set up the way I wanted, I havent really used recovery much. It's been months now.

I tried to install madmack and philz recovery using twrp recovery by free gee and it failed. Also tried using the adb using the easy twrp.zip and it didn't work either for twrp and philz recovery. IS there any working method for KK to flash them. The above mentioned methods worked for Jb for me not for KK...

As I stated before, the recovery I am using right now works with KK, but doesn't have external SD support. I have never been able to get external SD to work with KK.

Philz Touch recovery for E980, 986, 988
Yes, you are right. Twrp did not see my card 64Gb on my E988 20b CIS and I installed PhilZ touch recovery from here https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/e980 and I can see my SD Card from this recovery. It's the best recovery to my mind. It is better than GPRORecovery_6.0.4.4.apk. But you can get to bootloop to recovery after it flashing. You must use this instruction http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55779143&postcount=186 and everything will be o'key.
myself shashank purohit
I have also same prblm
but now I have find a way 100% working
just open ur twrp and connect ur phone via usb to computer
u can see ur internal storage there
believe me
put the custom om in it
and u can install it on twrp

I used newest FreeGee , Installed TWRP & Now im stuck in recovery mode. I flashed gummy rom first time & It worked. Ran into problem after I installed the Google apps so I did a factory reset, wiped everything to try again to install gummy rom. Now I'm stuck in TWRP. I also used ADB sideload commands to push the rom to phone & It did push it, except now. When I try to install the rom, It keeps saying FAILED. Can someone tell me what im doing wrong?
newgeek- I don't know if the AT&T version of this is very different to my F240 version but I am familiar with that 3rd screen you posted with the "secure booting error" or something like that.
What about just pulling that battery out and doing factory reset and start over from the beginning ?

Try to push another ROM via adb, I read in the general Section that there were some Gummy files that weren't the right size, just download CM11 and try to flash it, TWRP is saying that the flash failed, that's why you are stuck in recovery.
Erik
The phone currently has no OS , I also tried to mount my 64gb sd card to install off of that & It gives me a mounting error for SD CARD. I have tried several other roms & No luck , Keeps giving me FAILED. Is this because of the secure boot perhaps? I'm totally clueless why it's not taking it. I'm running my nexus 4 with the gummy rom without a hitch.
Why not try a different SD card ? If that SD card was in the phone when all this happened maybe something is on the card that's bad ?
LL13-
I borrowed a 2GB SD CARD & It mounts but same thing as before FAILED. Tried both gummy & CM 10.2

It looks like an error with the updater script, maybe something twrp isnt reading or executing? try a different rom.
At worst try a different Recovery.
ADDED:2/4/2014: I would avoid twrp on freegee, i've heard others have issues and it may have something to do with your situation.
Also, I noticed your twrp says 2.6.1.0, am I mistaken or is the newest teamwin 2.6.3.1? That number don't look right.
If possible try to flash madmacks twrp or cwm 6.0.4.6.
1.Try to Flash a ROM via sideload
2. you can end the recovery boot loop by using adb commands, there are two methods try them
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49370751&postcount=70
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48136185&postcount=268
I had the same issue seems like the are some problems with TWRP on this particular phone I flashed the regular clockworkmod and it works perfect.I tried on another phone with same results.
Right now
Flash stock rom
root
use freegee to install regular cwm I tried rom manage but recovery did not installed
the flash another rom if thats what you really want but copy rom directly to sd card instead
Its not just twrp apparently the new update of freegee installs the wrong bootloader/image on our phone. It bootloops anyone that uses it.

Madmack's TWRP is reliable when you want to have no bootloops into your recovery. But i have the problem, that i cannot flash any other roms and it shows, that my LG E986 isnt recognized as a suitable device for the rom and it aborts the procedure. Although on the other recoveries it worked fine...
Is there something what i have to do except switching recoveries to my phone's death?
I used ADB to push the stock rom back to device & It took it's sweet time but it worked. I sold the phone to a friend of mine LOL! They wont know the difference.
I'm running Dirty Unicorn 4.3.1 and MK4 and want to root to 4.4 kit kat and load some new roms.
I have tried just wiping and flashing, but I get no data unless i'm on wifi.
Is there a step by step to get the update?? I also read about some knox crap also. Don't know what that is.
Please advise.......
Thanks in advance

Well if you read most of the 4.4 rom threads you will see you need to use cwm recovery or philz recovery. Since you are using twrp you wont get data to work without going through a few hoops.

I did download rom manager and Philz. I just wasn't sure how to get them to override TWRP. Do I just flash Philz??
Thanks so much for chiming in. I've been rooted for several years, but this update flew right by me.
Keep talking......
Yeah just flash it through ROM manager then reboot into recovery. If it is not philz recovery (although it should be) then you can just flash it in recovery.

I downloaded rom manager, but it doesn't seem to override TWRP. I also tried to flash Philz (which I preferred), but I could only try to flash it with TWRP, and of course, it failed.

Like you, I could not get TWRP to leave my device (no matter what I tried). Only thing that finally worked was this flasher utility to get CWM:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools
Granted I didn't try to Odin PhilZ or CWM but that was about the only thing left I hadn't tried.
I had twrp for a recovery. When I installed DU 4.4.2, I downloaded cwm 6.0.4.3 because I guess twrp and 4.4 roms don't play nice. I actually downloaded the cwm recovery, saved it on my external sd, and booted into twrp recovery, flashed the recovery file for cwm, and it rebooted. I boot back into recovery with cwm on board, and then downloaded whatever 4.4 roms and gapps package that was necessary. It works fine for me.
I am sorry about the noobness but i cant seem to find a proper thread for recovery setup.
I installed ROM Manager and then the CWM recovery from there.
But if i try to root into recovery I get a " android with a exclamation mark" - so assumes i messed something up ?
only way is to power cycle the device .
Can anyone here please help how i install CWM as i want to flas CM 11

How were you able to make flashing custom roms work using freegee? I successfully rooted my Optimus G Pro and used freegee to install CWM recovery 6.0.4.7, but everytime I try to flash a custom rom - the phone would reboot after 10 -15 seconds. I followed and installed the custom roms accordingly to the instructions. Can you help me?

There are two different versions of Freegee on the Playstore. One is the free version and One is the paid version. I used the free version and when I open the app to install CWM recovery I don't see the "unlock" option, so I think the "unlock" option is only available in the paid version. Also, when I used the free version of Freegee to install CWM recovery, I can make and restore my nandroid backup. Maybe I need to buy the paid version of Freegee??
no u don't need paid.
also I didn't have the unlock option and I was able to flash.
I would say try twrp.

Check in CWM recovery, before you flash any of the ROM's that LOKI support is enabled, I think you can find it under Advanced and it says something like "Toggle LOKI support"

do I enable Loki after the flash or before the flash? Because I enable loki in the advance option of CWM recovery after I flash a custom rom and the phone still reboots 10-15 seconds. I did all the normal wipes and stuff too. I'm thinking maybe its because of I'm the software version that I'm on which is E98010g.
He said "check before you flash any rom, that LOKI support is enabled"... You should carefully read instructions before you do anything or you will end with bricked device...

I'm having the same trouble with recovery. I was on SlimBean for several months and decided to flash a ROM from RadeonMaya, but it wouldn't boot, so I tried to restore my backup of Slim from CWM. It looked like it restored properly, but it wouldn't boot either. I finally reverted back to stock and rooted again, downloaded Freegee and tried to flash CWM. I booted into recovery to flash my Slim backup, but I got an "error loki-ifying the boot image". I tried Phil's recovery, but couldn't boot back into recovery from CWM
Since then, I have not been able to flash anything, and have reverted back to stock probably a dozen times. I've tried TWRP, but can't flash a version that works on 4.1.2. I'm beyond frustrated at this point. I had fun flashing on this phone until these problems showed up, now I'm just going to try to like the stock ROM and hope we get an update to KitKat.
Just a quick question guys. What does freegee's "unlock" feature do? I ask because I don't get that option in Freegee either. Is it supposed to network unlock your phone or? Also, what is the need for the unlock?
can't flash a CWM recovery on my wife's E980 using Freegee....Mine is the white one and I had no loki issues with it...everytime you flsays:
"checking if loki-ifying is needed/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc. /by-name/boot needs lokifying. [-] Failed to find function to patch.
Error loki-ifying the boot image. "
yes I did use Freegee already and install CWM. When I booted it gave me this...I can't install any ROMS. yet my other G Pro (white) is fine and hasn't given me any issues. RIght now I'm stuck with it booting into clockwork by itself. And I would like to use TWRP but the version that comes with Freegee doesn't work right on the damn screen. If it's not bootlooping into Clockwork then it gets frozen at the LG screen with something about security crap. and the funny part is...I used Freegee both times.
EDIT: used LGFlashTool to bring it back..but she wants a custom ROM and every recovery I flash to it either
1. used this recovery. tried flashing using a CWM recovery that I used from Freegee http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552611
freezes at the LG screen with a SECURITY ERROR on the left corner of the screen (flashtools will fix)
2. When I do successfully flash a recovery using Freegee and I get it to boot into CWM it won't come back out of CWM it will boot automatically into it (LGflashtools will fix)
3. the freegee TWRP in won't work right with the touch screen.
Yes I saw that there are 2 topics similar to this, but they are G2's. Mine is an AT&T E980 that i'm having issues with.
I had exactly this same problem. I'm also on AT&T E980 and could not find a fix anywhere for this phone. I flashed back to stock so many times that I was ready to just get rid of it. What I finally noticed was that, if I flashed back to stock and took the update to E98010P, I could flash TWRP through FreeGee and the touch would work. I also used VooDoo OTA to preserve root through the update. I don't know if it was necessary, but it didn't cause me any problems and everything worked.
I have no idea why CWM stopped working and I could not use Phil's recovery either, but the whole experience has been maddening and I have never had so many problems with a phone before. Hope this helps.
