Hey, new to the mod scene. I got a HTC M8 recently with that's rooted, unlocked bootloader and S-On.
Currently running Elix-R 1.21, a GPE ROM. Was browsing some other custom ROMs and some recommend a firmware upgrade.
My question is, how do I check what firmware I have, and can I upgrade my firmware if I recover back to stock and use OTA ? I tried googling the answer, checking the FAQ thread here and searched for a few pages with the keyword firmware but couldn't find the answer. (I have found the thread on how to flash firmware though)
History:
- Had stock for a while, updated through OTA around...August? I think? I can't remember which update

Check the below thread, has step by step guide on how to check firmware version in fastboot. There are other threads/guides on how to return to stock to update firmware, just have to search.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
Thanks! I tried that but I think because I'm on a modified ROM, it doesn't actually show my firmware where it's supposed to be.
However, if that's the only way, then when I think I need to upgrade my firmware I'll flash stock and check it first.
Boot into fastboot. It's somewhere on the text if i'm not mistaken

Firmware doesn't really have a "number". We often refer to the software OS version (1.x, 2.x) the firmware deployed with for lack of anything better to go by. By checking main or software number, its just telling you the version of the ROM. You need to look at the hboot and radio baseband numbers.
If you are on hboot 3.18 and baseband 1.19x, you are on the 2.x base firmware. If those numbers are lower, you are on 1.x firmware.
Also be aware that Android 4.4.4 (software 3.x) is starting to roll out now. So you may want to return to stock ROM and recovery to get this OTA and the absolute newest firmware, anyway.

I am new to the anrdoid scene(One X is my first Android after years of BB and iOS devices) and have a few questions. My One X is currently on OTA 1.28.720.10 I see that most of the roms are 1.29.401.11 based. Will i need to update to those versions before rooting and flashing those ROMs. I would've updatedto 1.29.401.11 if i could but when I checked for new updates on the phone I was told that no new updates were available(i am guessing this has something to do with my region, which is india)
complete noob here, i wanted to not be such a Pain in the A** but i searched the forum to no avail....

no you do not need to update to latest firmware for you to be able to flash the latest custom roms. just backup your current rom and flash the one that you like and that is it follow the guide on how to install the rom which should be on the OP of the rom of your choice and your good to go

Thats is what i thought, but i was reading through a couple of threads over in the HOX android dev section and ran into this post by JDR0ID(whose Exodized rom I plan to flash) -
Ok, i think i know why i have so much battery drain lol!!! im 1.26 firmware (0.43 HBOOT) on a 1.29 rom lol!?!?! I have never updated firmware and ive just noticed.!!!! im going to have to revert to stock to update right?

They then proceed to talk about HBOOT version, and i have no idea what that is. So does that mean that if I dont update to 1.29 based rom I will not get the latest HBOOT version and I will have issues with his rom?

right say you are on 1.28 firmware and you want to flash 1.29 custom rom you will not be fully updated. you can do that by RUU or wait for an OTA update from your carrier. i was on 1.28 firmware but still flashed the latest custom roms. why you ask. cause i just love the roms..you do not get fully updated due to the s-off issues but i never had issues so i do not see why you should either
all honesty i do not see any difference having an old HBOOT or an old one. what i know is that when changing roms you do get the latest radio. if you go into settings and about phone and check baseband version you will see you will be on the latest one.. that is the most important bit for me. hope that clears things up
EDIT: what i normally do is this. before i flashed a custom rom i backed up my stock rom. then whenever there was an update i just restored my backup rom and installed the OTA. once i done that and was updated i flashed the custom rom again ..and that is it..i had the latest hboot and all was rosy. you can flash an RUU but i never tried that so i can not help on that..but there are a few threads in the development section were you can read about
I there people,
I have my device s-on mode but it run ICS and now i want to update to the new android version but mine isnĀ“t s-off and now i when i try to put any rom (already test with Insertcoin and Viper rom) get always some issues in wi-fi and stuff like that. Is there any way to install lollipop rom without s-off or is there a simple way to do it?
Regards
This phone never had ICS (Android 4.0), it released with KitKat (Android 4.4), is that what you mean? You have an M8, right (not another phone)?
If you do have the M8, depending which carrier/region version, most can be returned to stock ROM, stock recovery, than you can OTA to update your firmware (which will then allow current custom ROMs to work correctly). Or some variants have RUU, so you can relock the bootloader and RUU to Lollipop to update the firmware.
Hi there,
Sorry, is the Kitka version that i mean. i was using the Insertcoin 4.4 and now install the viper version of lollipop and get issues in wi-fi....

And you will encounter that issue on every single Sense Lollipop ROM until you update your firmware by one of the methods I suggested in my previous post.
hi eeveryone, I have the xtc one m8 branded 3 UK, unlocked, and wanted to know if the official Lollipop update is out yet from 3, as for a technical reason (s-off), I have to wait for the official firmware update to 4.xx before updating (if I remember now I'm at 3.xx)
because i have on board an unofficial ROM, I don't want to risk to go back to official just to find out that 3 UK has not yet released the update. Technical help on the 3 UK website is basically useless...
many thanks

Should have posted this in Q&A ...
To answer your question, yes .. 3 UK already on lollipop with version no. 4.20.771.2
hi again, long time since.
i would like to upgrade my phone to latest lollypop as it is starting to playing up a bit and need a bit of help. been reading on various threads but i'm a bit rusty on how to do it. just done a nandroid and titanium backup of current rom if things go wrong.
at the moment this is what i have
CID H3G___001 (three uk)
- custom rom android revolution hd 22.1
- android 4.4.4
- baseband 1.22.2133xxxxx
- build n. 3.28.401.9
i found this nadroid backup for my phone,
2.22.771.5_ckpv5.zip
would it be alright to just flash this in recovery, then get official fw update OTA and then, when on the latest fw, reflash the latest custom rom?
or should i flash
One_M8_3.28.401.9_odexed
thanks for your help

What is your hboot number?
Does it say anything after OS on the bootloader screen?
You need the stock nandroid that matches your firmware (hboot, etc.). Then after you restore that, install the corresponding stock recovery in order to OTA. After OTA, install TWRP again, and the desired LP custom ROM.

This won't help you. Its the unbranded Euro stock ROM. You need the 771 stock ROM, to match your CID in order to OTA.
Hi all, I have an SGH-i747 with ver 4.0.4 which has been rooted. I will like to update my version systematically with the original updates i believe there where from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 then 4.1.2. then 4.3, 4.4.2 etcc.. its there a place where i can find the original ups, my phone will not take the original firmware updates on its own. Reason is once i try to flash any ROM pass 4.1.1 i loose the Mobile Data getting the no sim inserted msg and no signal, forcing me to go back the original state in order to work. seems there is a problem with the modem once i go pass 4.1.1. .. thank you.
What bootloader version is on the phone? Where did you get the firmware to flash? You're using desktop Odin to flash?
Are ota updates an option for you? If they are you can unroot and flash the stock recovery; it might be easiest just to Odin back to stock.
Otherwise enewman has posted firmware updates to xda. They are bootloader + modem zips you can flash in custom recovery. You have to flash them incrementally, mjb then ne4 then nj1. Search the forum here and you'll find them. Just be careful and read read read those threads. Messing with bootloaders is the best way to hard brick this phone.
I'm in a similar situation - I've been on a custom version of the Stock ROM for 4.1.2 - never bothered to update the bootloader because I had the soft unlock done, didn't want to lose it. Now I'm bored with it. I'd love to get up to 4.4, or even a 5.0 ROM... but not sure the steps needed to do so. I'm vaguely aware that I have to update the bootloader/kernel, etc... but it seems like I'm 4 years behind the curve with all the ROMs and threads about bootloaders, and I've lost my touch.
That thread with the list of bootloaders sounds good though, I'll go looking for it to start I guess.

Thanks! I'll give it a look, down a couple of shots of liquid courage, and give it a go this weekend.
EDIT: Yikes, didn't take long for that to fizzle out. I'm using a i747M. Noticed that my current baseband version isn't listed anywhere on that thread. Hmmm. Oh well, guess I'll do some more digging later...
With an i747m, you can flash the latest 4.4.2 using firmware from sammobile.com and desktop Odin.
Do I need to do them in sequence, or can I jump to the latest? I'm assuming once I've flashed the stock firmware, I can load any current custom ROM?
@gfinockio, is your phone sim unlocked? If not and you don't see any mention of the warranty bit in download mode, you could flash back to stock 4.1.1, use the free method to sim unlock, and then run OTA updates until you are running the latest ROM. OTA updates are the safest route to upgrade the phone.
If you phone is sim unlocked already, you could flash directly to the latest ROM; however, you will not be able to downgrade the bootloader as any attempts to downgrade the bootloader could hard brick you phone.

I used the "free unlock" in 4.1.2 (so it's unlocked) but I thought when you upgraded the bootloader you lost that lock. Now that I believe that isn't the case (and I've used a different tool to unlock as well), I may just try the OTA updates. I was with MTS (Manitoba), but now I'm with Rogers, so I guess I would just use the Rogers OTA images to upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.4? Do I use Odin or whatever to do that? Once I upgrade to a "stock" image, won't the updater just prompt me to upgrade again and again until I'm "up to date"?
Unlocking the phone via code or the free method is permanent even after upgrading the ROM, bootloader, and modem.
The carrier ROMs for the i747m are pretty much identical but I always recommend sticking with the original carrier's ROM. If you download the stock image from sammobile.com, use Odin to flash the ROM.
OTA updates will not work with a rooted stock ROM too.
When i search for the stock firmware on sammobile for the i747m, it doesn't have any listings. Are you able to find it on there? I don't see it.
Search for the sgh-i747m.

Want to change my android 4.4.3 to 6.
What about firmwere?Does it come together with a new rom. Think I want Wolla or LeeDroid.
Please help!
Take your time and read..
Every rom has instruction on what minimum firmware is required.
Leeroid is great, you wil need to be on 6.xxx firmware for best results..

No, firmware is never flashed with a ROM. And 4.4.3 firmware is too old to run any of the current ROMs. So you need to update firmware.
It would have been best to update firmware while still stock, as you will need to go back stock in order to OTA and update firmware. That is, unless there is an RUU for your version M8, in which case you still need to relock bootloader RUU to update, then unlock again, and flash TWRP again.
