[Q] 4.2.2 vs 4.3 rooting and getting OTA updates - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi,
Recently I got a T-Mobile Galaxy S4 which has 4.2.2. It has been nagging me with an OTA update to 4.3.
- I heard it's really hard to root once you move to 4.3. Is that true?
Although I don't need to root right now, I would like to keep my options open for future.
- If I root, can I still get OTA updates without manually loading ROMs?
- Does this remove the root?
- Anyway to keep the root and still get OTA updates from T-Mobile (phone is a t-mobile branded one, but I'm using a PTel SIM)
Thanks in advance.
PS: I read some thread regarding this and I have some rough idea, but wanted to confirm it

The big concern is that firmware 4.3 has Knox boot loader. U can still root and flash custom Roms but most likely ull trip the Knox security and if never wanna go back to stock ull be involve in more risk then u weren't to update. Like u said keep ur opinion open and stay at MDL boot loader ,Root and flash ROM and ull have latest version of android!!
[emoji3] hope this helps !

So if I root (the 4.2.2) and then accept the OTA what would happen?

If u root it won't let u receive OTA it will give u a message about your phone being modified

[Q] Root De La Vega on T-Mobile Note 3 question.

Hello,
Seeing how future updates to the Note 3 supposedly causes the knox warranty void flag to be tripped for rooting with RDLV... Is it a good idea to root our devices now while we can? As in, rooting before one of these updates will both keep root on the device and have knox warranty flag 0x0 after updating to kitkat?
Bumping! I suppose it would be easy for Samsung to release an update that triggers knox counter if root is detected... I've never rooted a device though. So my question is do phones keep root when you receive an android update?
If you are rooted, you normally don't want an update over the air. There so far have been no updates to the T-Mobile version of the note 3 though.
Well I was wondering about that as well. I keep reading that the Tmo Note 3's bootloader is unlocked. If it is truly unlocked would it not matter to take updates as we should be able to continue to root and put a custom recovery back on the phone? I mean i personally would wait to know if it is safe to take an OTA before actually taking it. I came from the VZW S4 which had that crazy locked down bootloader after the 1st OTA (I luckily never took an OTA and it's on the original FW). I mean I guess they can always lock down a bootloader on any OTA but why would they if it came already unlocked?
All the ota does is download via wifi or data for the update...that is the only difference... it doesn't do any extra checking or anything like that. The only thing that will happen is after the update has been downloaded it will flash your phone and then it will erase root because it will be flashing the phone back to a stock new firmware. You then would have to root your phone again.

If you are rooted and you accept an OTA or KIES update or if you Odin flash official
stock firmwareyou will lose root but you can root the phone again if you want.
Fortunately all the cwm/twrp flashable custom roms found here in XDA
all come pre-rooted and if you flash one of those you will not lose root.
Either way you will trigger the KNOX if you flash kernels, custom roms or custom recoveries.
The only two things that KNOX does is it prevents you from downgrading to an older version
of the rom and or firmware as well as the possibility of voiding your warrany if you have one.
Good luck!

[Q] Bootloader. Locked or Unlocked?

So my family is about to switch to AT&T from Boost Mobile. And I think I am getting a Galaxy S3 from them. And I would love to root and install CM in it. But I have been hearing reports of AT&T's locked bootloader policy and such. Should I worry about it for the S3? Or does it still have an unlocked bootloader? If it doesn't, should. I unlock it first, then root? Or root first? Please reply, and if you do, thanks,

if your phone firmware is higher then 4.1.2 then
check if your phone is locked or not Dial *#7465625# into your phone, a screen will pop up telling you what is on.
if Network lock is ON that mean your phone is locked and for now there is no way to unlock your phone for free (you have to pay for unlocking)
if your phone firmware version is 4.1.2 or lower then that then
go this link and find how to unlock your phone for free http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529200

The bootloader issues should not be insurmountable. Being a new phone I expect it will come with the 4.3 version of Jelly Bean installed. This will be the first thing to check once you have the phone. If it has 4.3, it will have Knox installed and this will need to be turned off to install a custom ROM. All I have seen regarding removing Knox is either after or at the same time you are rooting. To root, the CF-Auto-Root method works for many. Both the CF-Auto-Root and a second method are here This thread also links to a script which will remove Knox, if needed.
You will need to decide which version of CM you wish to install, probably 10.2 or 11. At this time the 4.3 bootloader will work with both. I would recommend reading about all of this, and having a fair understanding, before doing anything to your phone. I won't hurt to run it on stock for a week or two.
Some things to bear in mind: The phone may come with the 4.1.2 version of Jelly Bean, but I doubt it. If it does you will have to update the bootloader before proceeding, more reading because there is an option involved - the official 4.3 bootloader (MJB) or the leaked 4.3 bootloader (MJ2). There is a bit of a chance the phone could come with Android 4.4, KitKat. It all depends on the timing of when you get your phone, when AT&T rolls out the update, and if the store personnel update the phone giving that 4.4 is available. If it does come with 4.4, DO NOT change anything until those on here that do the good things for our phones understand how it behaves.
Remember all of the warnings about anything you do being your responsibility.

[Q] Does Rooting LG G3 Disables OTA Updates?

Hello guys,
I'm sorry I created a new thread to ask some questions but nobody responded when I asked on an existing thread. Also, I think you should keep this thread for new users who what to know everything about rooting their LG G3.
So, my questions are the following:
I just bought the LG G3 (D855, runs Lollipop out of the box) and I want to root to it (I've rooted many devices before) but will I be able to receive OTA updates? Does LG has any security feature like Samsung's Knox that is triggered by the rooting process and marks my device? Is there any danger in general?
If later on I decide to flash TWRP and custom ROMs will I have to unlock the bootloader?
Thank you for your time, and again, sorry for the new tread.
I am not sure about the Lollipop version but when I was running KitKat I was notified of OTA updates but when I've tried to run it I got a pop up that update couldn't be applied because my phone was rooted. had to get rid of root than I could update it.

From what I heard a simple unroot from SuperSu app was not even enough, because the stock fw has a counter that is incremented in case you root, and therefore even if you remove root the counter will still prevent you from applying the OTA.

I've flashed a stock firmware and updated. There may have been a simpler way, but I am not an expert.
Again I am not sure if things got easier or harder with Lollipop but to be very honest in the last few firmware updates I did not see anything life changing from LG that would worth the hassle. I think being rooted is much more valuable than the latest firmware updates were.
For me personally anyways

Thank you guys for the answers! :good:
So, LG indeed has a "security" feature that messes with your device. Can someone confirm it?
If the counter is software can't we alter/erase it? Or is it hw-based like Samsung's Knox Warranty Void? If it is hw-based we cannot do something.

How to root?!?

Im on 5.1.1 G925TUVU3DOJ7. Is it possible to root 5.1.1 without tripping knox right now? Or can i downgrade to 5.0.2 by flashing stock 5.0.2 with odin then root with ping pong without tripping knox?
Also what are the best roms, kernals & other cool tweaks you recommend? Just got this phone so i would really appreciate the help, thanks have a good one.
I don't think there's a way to root without tripping KNOX right now. There was an engineering bootloader that allowed flashing without tripping KNOX, but I don't know if it still works (it might). However, this bootloader breaks the fingerprint scanner. There is no way to have an un-tripped KNOX and working fingerprint scanner at the moment, I know that for sure.

PingPong used to work, it doesn't anymore. I agree with what the other poster said about the engineering bootloader however this file was requested to be removed by samsung (sboot.bin) so good luck finding it. I think you might be onto something downgrading to a previous release, I'm not too sure but the OH6 I think is the one that I used PingPong on to gain root but I don't know if the new bootloader will let u. It should though, if it replaces the sboot.bin it should let u downgrade. I'm just not sure, this new update has caused a lot of stuff to not want to flash for me, I'm waiting on my new internet to arrive before I start messing with it anymore because my phone is my only link to the outside world. if you find out please let us know? I'm very interested in the answer.
I've heard Hacker Kernel is a really good one, people seem to love it.

If I remember correctly, PingPong only worked on 5.0.X, and once you update to 5.1.X, you are no longer able to downgrade back to 5.0.X. I think if OP is on 5.1.1 his options for root are VERY limited if he wants an in-tact KNOX, especially since you are indeed correct, and the engineering bootloader seems to have been removed.
S6 Edge frozen on G925TUVU3DOJ7
guys i need help , after flashing the rom G925TUVU3DOJ7 on my S6 Edge 925T its stuck on galaxy logo and not booting , i've trying to use unikernal but its not work i get like flashing is locked !!!
Rooting is a risky business since last update, make sure you have a good download or download again from Samsung website and try again.
Pp.
Really why is everyone so concerned about knox? All it does is make it so you can't use Samsung Pay. So use Android Pay. Set it up before you root then back it up after you root. Restore it whenever you flash a new rom and it will work. I rooted the day I got my S6 Edge which was before the Plus came out and I have never had any problems. Everyone worried about knox this and knox that has a messed up phone.
HI,,I updated firmware 5.1.1 to a rooted G925T using Smart Switch (no errors etc) now the phone is stuck on android Samsung logo so I tried to reflash the firmware many times using Odin3 the only frimware it took with no errors was (G925TUVS3DOJC) which is the last one but still the same thing stuck at Samsung logo so i searched it online and it says something wrong with EFS and has Bad Root Key it know as DRK (DEV Root Key) and don't know how to fix that. anyone can hepl plz.

OTA updates after rooting and unlocking bootloader

If I unlock my bootloader, root with magisk and install twrp, the what is step by step process to get official OTA updates when one gets released.
I don't have problem setting up my device from square 1.
But I want to avoid bootloops and bricking my device

Theres no way to do all things at once.
Unlocked bootlooder and rooting it means youll not get updates anymore as security has been broken. Youll have to flash manually or leave it as it is.

So if I flash stock rom via odin, will it be possible to get OTA updates.
Of course I will loose my unlocked bootloader and root and twrp. Wouldn't I?

Someone correct me if im wrong. My previous root experience was a year ago already with my s6 edge.
You'll still get OTA updates provided youre on official firmware and your bootloader is locked.
But a tripped knox will never return. You will never be able to use samsung pay and other features requiring knox.
Its up to you what you like. OTA updates or full feature of a rooted phone.

Yes I know about knox. Currently using rooted Samsung note 4 and all knox related apps removed.got Samsung health working by changing tima.
I dont care about knox tripping and not being able to use Samsung pay.
But since Samsung A70 is a new phone and unlike my note 4 still bound to get Ota updates and security patches, I would like to have this option.
I am seeing on forums to not lock the bootloader after rooting as it can cause bootloops. Something to do with magisk changing firmware of your phone.
I guess the only option is manual firmware download and flashing and then redoing rooting and patching.
Or stay on current firmware
