I just got my M8 yesterday after running over my previous phone, and immediately started looking into s-off and root. Am I screwed with the 4.4.3 update when it comes to s-off, because it seems like firewater won't work. Is there a different exploit that works? I couldn't find anything searching. My apologizes about the noobness, I'm always like this when I first get a new device. Many thanks in advance, sorry for any errors grammar-wise, I'm on my phone.

You need to use Sunshine. It costs $25 and not transferrable to a different phone, but it is worth it IMHO.

I did, then I must have done something wrong. had a pretty constant reboot problem. Ended up buying S-Off and flashing GPE ruu.

Sweet, thank you very much. I'm just a bit tight after buying this phone and having a 1k mile road trip this week. Good to know I can get my root on.
I just did the same thing I love it no more sense or HTC preventing me from running the latest software

Correct, but I preferred to get S-off with sunshine then root and unlock the bootloader without having to get the HTC developer unlock. This way HTC doesn't have any record of the bootloader being unlocked.

im guessing they patched the exploit and will have to wait for a new one if you went back to locked, or s-on status.

Never S-OFF'd or unlocked it.
Never perm-rooted it. Didn't even have custom recovery.
It was 100%, just rooted. It is a work-only phone so I am not overly concerned with it. But it would still be nice to be able to.

i guess i should say that HTC phones seem to be easier to root, well from the outside looking in that is. i have no clue how hard it really is to find an exploit.

Nah, just a learning exercise!!
Was locked and S-0ff and took the 0TA to check it out. Including Weaksauce.
Easily flashed an unencrypted older RUU, then unlocked the bootloader with Scotty's recipe posted earlier.
Made firmware newest with SantoD's no-boot firmware and we're back at the races!

If s-off there's no need to lock to get an OTA.
Also, keep this so you don't need to flash back to an older RUU.

I've been looking around trying to get my botched gpe edition back to sense. Haven't been able to s-off. Thus can't get supercid. But I remember seeing a lot of people that the reason for sense roms not working on a gpe phone, is because the partitioning in the memory. So my question is: Can partitioning be changed manually to possibly support sense roms? And what exactly changes the partitioning in the first place?

L won't be any good to me since I can't even get stock GPE to work. And SD+GPE4.4.4 ota updater isn't working for me. I just want to go back to sense so I can finally get s-off and finally benefit from it.

That's the million dollar question right there. I have no idea how, but I converted it. At first the gpe worked, but after an OTA things took a turn for the worse, I forgot what I did. But now I can't get the stock gpe ruu to work, and only the SD GPE works and aosp roms. And I know it's because of the partitioning.

Nope, apparently can't change your cid unless you are s-off. And both firewater and sunshine said they were incompatible with my rom or whatever. If only I could wipe everything and start over again from scratch.

PM me.
I am a noob to the htc side of things and am learning about s-off and bootloader unlocking. I have a verizon m7 and it is on the latest update so after trying for 2hrs to get rumrunner working I read that the only s-off method that works for this version is Sunshine. Now I am only going to be using this phone for a few weeks until I can get my hands on a nexus 6 and it has a cracked screen so I just can't justify spending to unlock the bootloader. Is there any way possible to unlock the 5.28.605.2 version for free? And if not that version specifically is there a way to downgrade? I want this so I can run an AOSP rom but if there is no way without paying I might as well just rock stock sense. Also no disrespect to the sunshine devs they have done great work I just can't afford it right now. Thanks!
Edit: Also is there a way to get root without S-off/bootloader unlock so that I can atleast use Xposed? Again sorry for the noob questions im so used to having a nexus that all these things are new to me.
Being locked and s-on, any way you would get root would be temporary and any changes to system would be reset upon reboot. Only way for permanent root is s-off or unlock. (This means xposed will not work.
Only software to s-off and unlock for recent ota is sunshine. You can look at java card or jtag services, but they are more expensive than sunshine.
You cannot downgrade without s-off.

Curious, are you turned off from S-OFF because you are happy stock, or you don't want to pay the $25 for S-OFF.

Trying to get some feedback on the payment for sunshine and if people are turned off by it.

I really would love to run paranoid android on this phone but its not so much the price its the fact that I'm not going to use this phone for too long im just waiting for the nexus 6. That being said if it were closer to $10 i probably would have done it. Also sense 6 is way more tolerable than older versions I've used.
Hi Everyone! I have a HTC One M7 with Verizon and am looking to unlock bootloader, S-OFF, as well as root mainly. I have tried Sunshine which tells me I have to root first. I have also tried, Kingroot, Moonshiner and most of all of the other programs.Upon looking up this I found I need to unlock my bootloader. To do this I need to S-OFF. I didn't catch HTCDEV in time to unlock the bootloader since Verizon blocked it so I would appreciate anyone who could help me root, unlock the bootloader and S-OFF. Thanks! I forgot to add, I am running HBOOT 1.6.1.

If you're on lollipop, pretty much only things I can think of that have worked are Kingroot (You have to try it MULTIPLE MULTIPLE TIMES) , N if that doesn't work on the latest version, try older versions (I remember old versions working for a few ppl, I believe it was like version 4.5 or 4.50.-something). The way kingroot works, u have to run it like sometimes 10-20-30 times of it saying failed, and eventually it works. I successfully did it on 2 of my friends m7's... (Not my own, I Sunshined back on 4.4.2)
Then, when/if u get kingroot to work, run sunshine...
Alright I'll keep trying kingroot

Only other way for a vZw m7 is to find somebody who has a Java card, and make arrangements to ship / drive your phone to them, and they'll b able to S-off, bootloader unlock, & root it within 5 mins. Java cards from what I understand r VERY expensive, but over in the vzw M9 thread, there's a whole thread that's just/only for the topic of arranging to get your phone unlocked with a Java card owner, as Sunshine still to this day has never worked for the VZW variant of the M9. I know there are some VERY reputable and well known devs over there who would be willing to hook u up and have been doing it for others on xda for over a year now, (for quite cheap I understand) -although I highly recommend tossing em a donation at least for their troubles.... Maybe @dottat can point u in the right direction

Danngg.. I wonder if this is a result of Google's continuous security updates? When I ran Kingroot to temp root before running Sunshine, it rooted on like... the first or second try... this was also after I'd foolishly tried every single root exploit that were designed in the days of Android 1.x and Gingerbread, which might have weakened some security if it didn't break it completely.. The binaries are called psneuter and gingerbreak, if you wanna give it a shot. There's also Rumrush, Firewater, Towelroot... probably others that I can't think of. None of them are likely to give you root, but if you use all of them and then use Kingroot, maybe Kingroot will work. I would personally do that sooner than running Kingroot and having my phone reboot 300 times...
So, I guess all you can do is keep trying.

Kinguser

I did it as follows. I used KingRoot and obtained its form of root. Then I ran Sunshine, which requires that you first are rooted. Sunshine reboots mid-process, losing root. So I ran KingRoot again, obtaining root. Then I ran Sunshine and it took up where it had rebooted, and got s-off. Then I found a script to eliminate the KingRoot temporary root. It did not exactly fit my file system, so I by hand made all of the changes indicated in the script (some of the changes in the script were not really important, some referred to files I did not have, etc., but I was able to change the important ones.) When I rebooted, I got the SuperSu pop-up to update, which I did, and ended up with a Verizon M7 with unlocked bootloader, s-off, and rooted.

Here are two sites I had left in my bookmarks:
http://zidroid.com/how-to-get-ride-and-replace-kinguser-with-supersu-app/
https://androidmtk.com/replace-kinguser-with-supersu
You could probably find more.
The only way this worked for me was to read the script and figure out what the critical replacements are. You should note that the critical steps involve files that have the immutable bit set, and the scripts show a two step process of first changing the immutable bit, and then deleting the file. I did these by hand, since some of the files that needed replacing were not in the sub-folders indicated in the scripts.
HI, fellow m7vzw user here. Let me share my experience. Around mid 2015 last year HTC released an update for lollipop that patched kingroot to be used to root its device. But all hope is not lost as you can doengrade back to the version of lollipop that is vulnerable to Kingroot exploit. I discussed this method last year around October with some other htc one m7 vzw owners. One of them pointed out that as a failsafe in case something went wrong with htc's firmware, it can be downgraded back ONE version to avoid that faulty firmware. For example if they release a version in January, February and March (March firmware being faulty as example). You can downgtade back to the previous firmware using fastboot and the required firmware files. We never tried to downgtafe again from Febraury to January because when we were already rooted and s-off after one downgrade ???.All files on links for the files are located on the Verzion HTC one forum..... i'll try to find the post containing proof for you.

Hello all,
I am trying to change my girlfriends ATT edition m8 into a Google Play Edition. Shes been having a lot of problems lately and just a nice clean stock android I feel would really just revive the phone. Im not looking to pay $25 for a 2 year old phone that has hardware issue just to get s-off so if anyone has a method to get s-off i would appreciate it. I have unlocked the bootloader so thats all set.
When I attempt to flash the RUU.zip I have I am constantly getting an error 99 return.
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks guys.
You can't convert with a ruu while S-ON. And there is no other S-OFF tool than sunshine. At least not under 25$.

You need S-Off to convert the device to GPE but you don't need to convert to GPE to experience GPE.
While on S-On, you can install the Flashable Stock GPe ROM instead of using GPe RUU.
See : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708589
and there are a few other GPE flashable ROMs in Development thread that you don't need conversion to GPE.
(e.g. the one that linked in my signature but that's not updated to the latest and running this without GPE coversion)

There is no free s-off method. sunshine is your only option, unless you have a friend with a javacard and knows how to use it (otherwise, that costs even more money).
I agree with ckpv5 above, just flash a GPE ROM to get GPE experience. The only things that would be missing are OTA updates, and the GPE partition scheme.

Its a special MicroSD card that will s-off the device. They cost $300 or so. You might be able to find a local service that has a javacard for the M8, but by the time you find one, and pay them to s-off, you probably could have just used sunshine.

Sunshine is an app, its not complicated. I think by "complicated" you mean expensive.
On the other hand, S-off is certainly complicated for the developers, that have spend hundreds of hours finding these exploits, and bricked several devices developing sunshine. Sunshine is by the same devs that did firewater (for free) and a ton of other contributions to XDA, before deciding to make sunshine a paid app.
Java card is somewhat of a obscure thing. But nothing completely new. Older HTC devices had "gold cards" with a similar concept.
Whether you decide to pay for s-off or not, is completely up to your personal discretion. S-off isn't needed for most people; as its not needed to flash ROMs, root, and a great many other things.
