Ok, I got a kindle fire for my daughter a couple years back. I flashed a custom ROM onto it, and put a bunch of kid apps on it.
Well, we thought we lost it, and it turned up the other day after about a year.
I slapped it on the charger, and later that day booted it up. It works fine. It has a old ROM on it, and I'd prefer to try to get something close to 4.4 if there is one.
I'm also not 100% sure which version of the Kindle Fire this is. (Pretty sure its the original one, not a KF2, or KFHD)

You have an Otter(1), which is the Kindle Fire(1)
There has been an Fork in the Development
OtterX Roms: require converting to the Otter X Project see my [How To][Video] Convert to OtterX ROM/TWRP/Bootloader [ROM 2014-05-08] and Hashcodes' thread OtterX ROM/TWRP/Bootloader [TWRP 2.7.1 2014-06-08]
Otter roms: use stock partitions (otter/blaze)
to upgrade to Android 4.4/KitKat/CM11 Otter Roms you need to upgrade TWRP to 2.6.3.0 or better newest is 2.8.0.1
Download zip-openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.1-blaze.zip place on Kindles internal sd card, and install in whatever recovery is currently installed, reboot
then install a KitKat rom from [INDEX] Kindle Fire Development
Just dont just a rom with otterx in the name, many of the devs have dropped the stock otter, and just build otterX.
Official Cm11 or otter are here http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=otter and because of the smaller partition sizes of the Kindle use the PA Mini or Micro GApps the fulls Google Apps are 291MB now.
You sir, are made of awesome.
I'll get right on this.
Two questions. First, Does it matter that this says Blaze instead of Otter or OtterX?

Is there a KitKat rom for OtterX that feels exactly like KitKat on say, a Nexus 7? Also, do I HAVE to use the Mini GApps?

Ah, ok cool.
I got it working with the bootloader, and TWRP 2.7.1.0
I'm looking at Slimkat which had links to their own GApps. I think I'm going to install that one...
Haven't gotten the ROM installed yet because after the TWRP install, my PC no longer recognizes the device.
I've tried reboots etc, but right now, I just have a device with OtterX and TWRP on it... and nothing else.

otterX is the new partition system, not a file
You mean otterX rom?
did you follow the convert to OtterX instruction?
could be drivers
open device manager, uninstall any drivers for the kindle fire, maybe listed as something else, and may need to disconnect it a couple of time to figure it out.
Download Kindle Fire Utility, extract files, run install.drivers.bat
after fighting with it for a while, I got it going.
It's booting into SlimKAT now
Thanks again for the help!

I liked this. Any chance you'll be doing a 6.2.2 version?
Sure, the pack will be updated to reflect new Kindle Fire Firmware
download link
The link is dead...just keeps loading for me, on Pc and kindle.
Im doing reupload, looks like multiupload deleted it :/
+1 for 6.2.2 please.
Thanks
Link updaed
I can't seem to download, the link shows up as:
"%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A%2A/5ZBzf"
Link Fixed
Thanks mate
I got fed up of no flash support on ICS rom so i flashed my backup of original rom and installed this, its really slick and smooth, thanks.
So when can we expect the 6.2.2 update?
Sent from my phone.
I will try to release it tomorrrow or at monday, currently im moving my websites to new datacenter and it takes a time after that im all yours ;D
No rush. Thanks.
Sent from my phone.
I have experience with other Android devices, but this is my first time with a Kindle and I'm having a problem.
I installed TWRP recovery using the Kindle Fire Utility and after doing a Cache and Dalvik wipe I tried to install STOCKPLUS_TunePack_vol_1_BLAZE_6.2.1_user_3103920_ 1326318900.zip. The problem is that after the reboot the Kindle is freezed at the kindle fire logo.
It's a 6.2.2 Kindle and this TunePack is for 6.2.1 so that might be the problem. But how can I unblock the device now?
I still can turn it off/on and run TWRP, so I tried a Factory Reset, but it still stays at kindle fire after that.
Any hints? Thanks in advance!
This does not work on 6.2.2 yet. Have to reflash to stock.

Hi everybody.
First of all, i must be honest and tell you all that a lot of time is passed since the last time i've flashed a ROM on my kindle. I need to say this because probably the cause of my problem is something i'm not able to consider.
Anyway, like the title say, everytime i flash a 4.4.2 based ROM, after the flash, my kindle get stucked on logo. Don't worry, thanks to the unbrick tool i'm able to restore it, but that's not the point.
Does anybody knows where's the problem? I precise that i've got the latest twrp version and that i've tried these two rom:

A little more info would be great......
What version of fff are you using??
What version of TWRP recovery are you using??
Posting a logcat would be helpful also...
Let me know if you have any questions... Thx as always lj
The twrp version is the latest, which means the 2.6.3.1. It cames to me in automatic with the kindle fire utility tool.
For what regards the firefirefire's version, sorry man but i'm not able to help you. I think it's the latest also in this case because i've selected "install the latest version of firefirefire" in the kindle fire utility tool, but i don't know where i can check it.
For what concerns the logcat on booting i don't know how to do it because if i flash one of these ROM adb does not recognize the device.

You are having trouble downloading or installing? If you're having trouble downloading, just try on a different computer.
If you're having trouble installing, you'll have to say more before anyone can help you.

I tried to install a zip .I hit install and says error flashing zip.
Any kitkat rom requires twrp 2.6.3.1. Either upgrade twrp or just flash jellybean.
Is this ^^^ the problem? If so, download the newest TWRP, move it to the same folder as the other TWRP is in, in the kfu folder, rename it to recovery.zip or whatever TWRP ifs originally named, then remove the old one.
Launch kfu, and choose to install recovery. If that doesn't work, post back. Cheers, and good luck!

when you boot to recovery it will have version on top line, should be v2.6.3.1

The gray Amazon logo at the start is associated with the Kernel and can only be replaced by modifying the kernel in some way. However the fire Logo which is located in the Fire's root accesible partion should indeed be replaced(CM 12.1)/ theoretically replaced(Fire OS 5).
BTW try the CM, it really makes this $50 tablet much faster.

No. It requires you to modify the system partition, which obviously isn't possible without root access.
this works when flashed through twrp, but not through flashfire. Can you make it work thru flashfire?
