[Q] Flashing ROM only soft bricks phone? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA, recently bought a m8 that had cyanogenmod on it. As CM wouldnt unlock the phone (unlock code doesn't work so i figured i'd need a Sense based ROM for it to work). Any of the roms i try to install dont work. If you guys could look at my process on flashing roms and tell me what im doing wrong that'd be awesome.
-Get backup of system using recovery
-Move the ROM's zip to external SD (in the m8)
-use TWRP manager to find zip, flush Dalvik cache, flash now
-Takes me back to recovery, from which i install the specified rom from the SD card
-Install partially sucessful (Insert coin has error 7 and Android revolution says some features not installed)
-When the system reboots, Insert coin in bootloop and Android revolution just black screen..
What could be the error? Im a total noob with little time to research and would greatly appreciate it if you guys could help.
Some contributing factors include:
-S-on (firewater doesnt work and sunshine needs a sense based rom)

Hi there,
I would try the following:
1) find out which CID/MID and version-main I'm on
2) download TWRP Backup for my phone an restore it to be back on stock
3) proceed with S-Off and everything else I would like to do with my phone.
Regarding my above mentioned points:
1) Are you familiar with adb/fastboot an got it installed on your PC?
2) Boot into bootloader and prior to everything else, tell me HBoot Version as well as OS Entry.

Hey, regarding your questions;
1) Somewhat, used it during my firewater try
2) Hboot-3.16.0.0000
OS-1.55.631.4

Ok, sounds as if it is a ROGER001 CID, but to make sure in bootloader perform the following command:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot getvar all
Past the results here (WITHOUT YOUR IMEI AND SERIAL NUMBER).

Hi,
ok I would say you should usr this Rogers Backup to restore and after this try to S-Off with firewater. If firewater doesnt work though you'd just have a chance trying SunShine and thus paying 25$ for it.
The corresponding stock recovery - if need be - can be found here.
Thanks go to @Mr Hofs for collecting them in his thread COLLECTION of Stock backup's

Thanks for the help!! while waiting i tried a different solution and it sent me down a deeper hole :C was wondering if you could help with that problem too. Used ADB to lock the bootloader, but instead of just relocking it soft bricked again with the ***security warning***, any idea how that can be unlocked again?

Read the second post of my thread. You must unpack the nandroid backup. You can not flash it as a zip like a custom rom. But it's all explained there so i suggest you take a look again
And PLEASE stay in ONE thread !!! That is so awesomely confusing !

Screwed Up Need Help URGENT

Hi. My phone has had issues with not being able to be mount backups on TWRP and have tried everything to fix the problem with no luck. I read somewhere on a post that the only way I can fix my problem is to relock my bootloader and flash a RUU which I'm in the process of doing now. This all started when I accidentally deleted my system files (which was stupid) in TWRP. Have I screwed up and will I be able to flash the RUU onto my phone.
NEVER do anything until you got the correct files. Who says there is a RUU ? we need info.....
Post the outcome of :
Fastboot getvar all (and del the IMEI & SERIAL)
Can you enter the bootloader and the recovery ?

Thanks for the quick response, it's really late right now but hopefully I can post those details tomorrow morn. I can enter bootloader/hboot which my computer recognizes. Though I have relocked the bootloader which I can easily unlock, it's status is relocked. My recovery (TWRP) was killing me though as every time I pushed a file through adb which was received the bloody program spat out an error every time about being unmountable to the system and cache. I know I shouldn't have rooted my device if I didn't know what I was doing and what did you mean about not having the correct files? I did have a cm11 stable backup but that wouldn't "mount to disk" either. From what I have heard I think this is a soft brick which would mean it is repairable? Or is it just a lost cause?
Also if this helps, I am s-on and wiped my dalvik, cache, data and accidents the system. I also have a 32 gb sd card installed on the device.
Cool. The easiest way is to unlock the bootloader, load a rom.zip (preferably) a sense 6 (close to stock rom like arhd or maximus) and perform a full wipe in the recovery and install the rom.zip via the recovery (external sd)
See if there are any errors in this process

Tried this, if I try to load a rom onto my m8 it will automatically fail. The rom is not able to be mounted to anything. I also tried flashing a boot.img to try to get it to startup but it also failed from the same reasons as flashing a sense base rom and cm11. Also before I cleared the system partition I had a gpe rom installed if that helps.
Was it a complete gpe or just a Rom? Also if Roms are failing to install get the sdcard from the phone and use a card reader...then put the zip on it and flash it..normally a boot.img fastboot should be flashed without problems
Read this thread carefully, it has info about not mounting issues !

LOL People rely on having a ruu to much. Good luck in finding one for him. Since he is s-on it has to match his official main too because downgrading is not an option (with a ruu)
1 ruu for the AT&T....does it work on a Sprint device ? Does it work on a international carrier branded device ?

GOD YES!, i've somehow managed to get the bloody device to boot up but now its stuck in a bootloop. I think i opened up a custom rom extracted the boot.img file and flashed it to something (not sure what). Does this mean i have to manually replace each partition (data, cache, system ect.) with a part of a rom?
I would install a fresh rom via the sdcard.
And you "think" you opened a rom.zip and flashed a boot.img ? Seriously .....

I really don't know how i've gotten to this point, should I just take my phone back to the manufacturer for repair?

No you need to PM the guy with the mkfs file and fix that first.
ok just pm'ed him, hope he can respond soon. As for the state of my phone, is it soft or hard bricked? I just can't tell the difference because other people in the same situation as me have given up.
Its soft......as long as you can reach the bootloader it could be fixed.

[Q] HTC M8 Wifi problems on several Roms -HELP!

I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I have.
My htc M8 was rooted and insertcoin was flashed onto it however the wifi button greyed out and wouldnt turn on in order to s-off it. I tried several different roms and they all have the same problem. I am currently running skydragon v5. I have been trying to sort this phone out for a week and I am getting absolutely nowhere so any help would be appreciated. It's on ORANG001 and is s-on.
Thanks
You have old firmware. You need to have 4.19.61.2 on ORANG001 in order to have wifi on these ROM.
And you post this in wrong section.

Apologies, new to the forum it's been moved now!
Yeah .. requested it to be moved to correct section.
So .. you need to restore your stock ROM and do OTA up to 4.19.61.2
What's your current firmware version .. 3.33.61.9 or 2.26.61.1 ? Or even lower ?
Check what's written on bootloader - hboot 3.16 or 3.18 .. you need 3.19

That's a very low version ... you need to restore to stock backup 1.54.61.5
But I deleted my TWRP backup for most 1.xx.xxx.x only keep 2.x; 3x & 4x
There is someone else backup made with Philz recovery so you need to download Philz recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703223
then download the backup : https://mega.co.nz/#!WhwRmSoJ!QJxmI0gYj7t_0Hc4fMKx0XLYQ2n45S3OfrEcDRS3C-s
restore that backup with the stock recovery (included in that backup if I'm not wrong)

This is usually an issue on the computer's side (PC?). Try to re-install HTC drivers, try another USB port, or another cable. Also, if you have USB 3.0, this is known to cause issues with adb connectivity (apparently, you can disable this).
Also, you need to be booted into OS or in recovery for adb to work (does not work in bootloader) and you need to have USB debugging activated in Settings.
And when you say "firmware" I think you mean a nandroid backup, based on the instructions previously given to you? Be careful using the term "firmware" here, as most folks use that term to specifically mean the firmware.zip that contains hboot, radio etc. (but not ROM).

Don't you have a MicroSD ? Put the extracted nandroid on MicroSD at the right location clockworkmod\backups\ is easier than doing that ADB push.
Okay finally got the nandroid backup installed. Then when i tried to install the OTA update it took me to CWM and failed. So i then relocked and tried again to update OTA and it took me to the bootloader with a ***Relocked*** and *** Security Warning*** any ideas ?
You need to re-install the stock recovery in order to OTA. Bootloader lock has nothing to do with it (will OTA with unlocked bootloader).

Stock ROM backup and stock recovery are two different things.
You need to fastboot flash recovery recovery.img to replace the CWM that you have now. Inside the backup zip, there is a recovery.img .. take this out and fastboot flash it.
You need to unlock bootloader to flash it.
when using the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" using the recovery.img from the unzipped nandroid folder the process runs and it says okay with no errors then when i try go into recovery the red triangle and exclamation mark appear again

Yes that's stock recovery. Perform the ota now
Because that is stock recovery. You don't need to get into recovery.
Just reboot, check OTA, download then select install.
Let the system do the installation on its own

Was the phone purchased used or refurbished? If so, its possible someone unlocked the bootloader, SuperCID, and also S-off in order to make the bootloader LOCKED again, than s-on.
I don't think I've ever heard of an HTC device come from the factory with SuperCID. Although I suppose its in the realm of possibility; since SuperCID exists in the first place, HTC must use it at some point.
Yes, refurbished from aliexpress. As far as i know they come directly from HTC with the box and everything and they look like new.
So what do you suggest? There is anyway of backup the currect recovery ?

After unlocking the bootloader (and before flashing TWRP) you should be able to boot TWRP remotely without actually flashing it with command:
fastboot boot recovery.img
(where "recovery.img" is the actual file name of the desire TWRP version).
Once booted into TWRP, you can then backup the stock recovery. After that, flash TWRP and root and apply whatever mods you like.
Alternately, you can get the .401 stock recovery from the following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376

So in this instance (boot TWRP before flashing it) you are actually running TWRP on the phone remotely, where the TWRP file is still on your computer, and the stock recovery is still on the phone.

I'm not that familiar with that particular app, but I'm aware of others that do similar (Flashify). You can use it if you like. But I personally don't recommend such flashing apps; since they just are doing the same things you can do "manually" with fastboot/adb. Plus, such apps just add a unnecessary layer of complexity or additional point of failure. I've seen instances where folks have had issues performing a task with an app or toolkit; only to have it fun perfectly when they do it with fastboot; so pretty clear to me that the problem was the app/toolkit.
Plus, fastboot and adb are good tools to know (if you don't already) as they can be very useful when your phone doesn't boot into OS (something an app can't do).

This issue still exists. You can get the apk's for the apps in question on this forum, and install them after you root.

Nope. Read more carefully what I typed:

Thank you for replying
1. How can i boot TWRP remotely?
2. oh ****,which apk's get lost in the process? if i will not have the same exact apk's i would not be able to make OTA updates
3. Firewater is no longer active? the only way of doing S-OFF is by paying 25$?

1) I already described this in Posst #5 above.
2) Only the system partition is checked during OTA install. Since (as you mentioned) the "missing" apps aren't on the system partition, it won't prevent OTA.
3) Correct. Firewater was an online service. So it doesn't work even if you have the binary (if you were wondering). Sunshine is the only way.

I don't know off hand, and may differ from one carrier version to another, anyway.
There is a thread about it, so just search. I don't have a link off hand.

I think you can actually boot TWRP as I've described(instead of flash TWRP) then use TWRP to root.
Never done this myself and not sure it works; but I'm pretty sure another member here said it can be done this way.
Also keep in mind, its easy to swap back and forth between stock and custom recovery. You could have already done so in the time you took to ask the question and wait for an answer.

I will search for it.
I know that's an easy thing and i have done that to my friend about 6 months ago. Unlocked his m8, flashed recovery and made root then flashed original back to get OTA.
The thing is that i don't have CID so i can't download anything from the thread... Last time i have checked his cid so i knew which stock recovery i should download but now i don't know because my cid is 111111
As for the apps i am download a system dump of the rom, i hope the apks will be there.
That's really a shame that the only way to S-off is by paying 25$

You want the 4.16.401.10 stock recovery that corresponds with your main version.
Your MID of 0P6B10000, which corresponds to Europe, also would indicate that the .401 recovery is what you want.
Mr. Hofs Helped me before with this boot recovery so here's what I did
1. unlock bootloader
2. fastboot boot recovery.img
2.a flash supersu on recovery (now Im rooted with stock recovery intact)
3. Install flashify to back up my stock recovery (keep it very important)
4. now flash the TWRP by fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
5. go to your TWRP back up your stock rom (keep it again)
6. flash custom rom
7. enjoy

HTC M8 OS will not start (Stuck on "Android is starting" - "starting apps")
Hi,
I'm brand new to development on android, but reasonably tech savvy and tried fixing my HTC M8 (EU) Bootup freeze problem following general forum / google advice but with no success yet.
1 - Hard/Soft Reset
2 - Wipe Cache
3 - Factory Reset
4 - Unlocked Bootloader, Flashed Recovery with TWRP, and followed the advice on this useful page to restore Nandroid backup:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
The phone seems to accept the Android stock recovery with no errors (restored using TWRP from the phone) (I checked carefully to use the correct version - 6.13.771.4), but when I reboot after restoring the stock recovery, the phone is still hangs at the "Android is starting" black screen with the subheading of "Starting Apps". This is the bit that appear after the apps have each loaded up (So no improvement )
Can anybody suggest what to do/try next?!
Perhaps there is a hardware issue preventing a software fix?...I did carefully replace the Micro USB board a few weeks ago but was very careful and took handling precautions to prevent any ESD damage so would be surprised if this caused an issue...
Bootloader is unlocked, S-ON...
Prior to trying to fix this issue the phone had never been tampered with (with the exception of my micro usb replacement!)

Help!
Hi everyone,
I desperately need some help! Any ideas?!
Thanks,
Have you tried flashing a rom from the rom section via twrp? Any rom, not a backup? Something like ARHD or Leedroid or better yet, a MM based AOSP rom?
Also, are you installing anything else with it or just the straight nandroid?

I've just tried flashing the straight backup (RUU 6.13.771.4) so far. It seems to work (no errors reported on phone) but after reboot from TWRP recovery, it just hangs still at the loading android apps screen.

I've not tried installing anything else yet. I am S-ON at the moment, and haven't researched how to set S-OFF yet to allow me to flash a custom ROM & root the phone. I think I'll need to do that first?
Maybe I'll have a go at flashing a MM AOSP ROM next if it could might make the difference. Would this prevent future OTA updates?
Thanks for your input!

Yes, it will break OTA, but it will let you know if its an OS issue. You can always restore as previous to go back to how you were.

OK, I'll give that a go.
Interesting, when I select CHECK SMARTSD from bootloader, the phone freezes at the HTC One (white) Logo screen. I don't know if this indicates a hardware issue with the internal SD?
I'll research the forum for how to flash a custom ROM with S-ON (or turn S-OFF) and try that then post result....

Ok -So I picked the Google Play Edition (GPe) first (It seemed a nice and simple safe ROM to start with!) from:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708589
I initiated the install with TWRP (no need to get S-OFF). The load file (AROMA) built into the ROM initiated on my phone and asked how I wanted to install the ROM. I opted for "NON ROOT" again to keep everything simple and minimse any change/impact to my device at this point. (Though I might root for fun later...)
And FANTASTIC! - the OS booted up straight up! (it did take about 10 minutes to load for the first time)
So, great news, the boot freeze has been broken and I have a working phone again!
I'll probably keep tinkering and trying different ROM's now that I am starting to get the hang of things.
Thanks very much for the help. Hopefully others might find this thread and learn something from it too

Your post is really unclear, making it impossible to help without further info.
Did you have the issue of no SIM before, causing you to try to fix it? Or were you playing around with ROMs, and broke the baseband/SIM? In other words, what was the exact sequence of events that led to the current condition.
Do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).
Also, is the bootloader locked, unlocked or relocked?
Do you have TWRP installed? If so, what version number?

That is a RUU not flashable rom zip, you can't install RUU in twrp.
You installed GPE ROM in twrp ? So I guess you didn't install GPE RUU.
Try any other Sense ROM like ICE, if can boot but no baseband & imei, install firmware as I said above.
Another thing.. your bootloader is white and not black, right ?

please can u help, what's the rom i may install can u give me all tutoriel
I never say any backup to try, only the firmware.
No need to relock bootloader to install RUU and no need to change to S-On (same for installing firmware too)
Install again GPE rom as you said you can install and working but no baseband
Then after install firmware, fw_6.15.720.2.zip only
then tell if baseband is fixed or not.

What format is the RUU, is it zip or exe?
If it got stuck, what was the specific error message? Only telling us it "had some errors" is not useful. I shouldn't have to be telling you this again. Provide as much detail as possible, if you expect us to help.
You don't need to relock the bootloader to RUU when you have s-off.
Relocking the bootloader does not make the device s-on. Never seen it. It just makes the bootloader RELOCKED, which restricts a lot of other things (can't flash TWRP, etc.).

Firmware and recovery nor two different things. I'm skeptical if you flashed the right thing, or did it properly.
Did you get the file, and follow the instructions exactly as listed in the link that ckpv5 gave your for the firmware?
Did you flash it twice, as the instructions say?
Do fastboot getvar all, again, and post (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

Are you sure? I can't find error code 179.
Maybe you mean Error 170, which is USB connection error. Which often just means you need to put the phone in fastboot mode. Or try another USB cable, another USB port on the PC, or re-install the HTC drivers.

Any of the ROMs from the M8 development section should work. You will need to unlock the bootloader again, and flash TWRP to the device again (suggest current TWRP version 3.1.1-0). This is due to the fact that firmware over-wrote TWRP with stock recovery.
Most of the "ROMs" you were trying to flash before were RUUs, not TWRP-flashable ROMs. So hopefully, you won't have any issue flashing ROMs now.

I don't personally do "best ROM" recommendations for 2 main reasons:
1) There is no such thing as a "best ROM" for everyone. Each user has drastically different preferences and usage patterns. What is "best" for me, may not even be any good for you. You need to decide for yourself what is "best". If you want some ROM suggestions, there are plenty (IMO, too many) of existing threads with such discussions.
2) The notion of a "best ROM(s)" is insulting to the developers, most of whom do all this work for no compensation. If everyone kept recommending the "best" ROM(s), what point would there ever be for devs to introduce new ROMs or ideas? The variety/choice in ROMs is a good thing. Don't rob yourself of the potential "hidden gems" by being a sheep and doing what everyone else does, or just doing what a stranger tells you is "best".
You won't do anything to the phone by flashing ROMs, that isn't recoverable. We all occasionally run into bad ROM flashes, no boot situations, and other bugs. It's just part of the game. If you flash ROMs, root, or otherwise mod these phones; you have to live with the fact that sometimes things go wrong, and you have to know how to recover from those things.
If you stick with the M8 development section, and look for Sense ROMs, you will find what you seek. Don't flash any RUUs or firmware, unless you know what you are doing.
