[Q] HTC M8 Wifi problems on several Roms -HELP! - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I have.
My htc M8 was rooted and insertcoin was flashed onto it however the wifi button greyed out and wouldnt turn on in order to s-off it. I tried several different roms and they all have the same problem. I am currently running skydragon v5. I have been trying to sort this phone out for a week and I am getting absolutely nowhere so any help would be appreciated. It's on ORANG001 and is s-on.
Thanks

You have old firmware. You need to have 4.19.61.2 on ORANG001 in order to have wifi on these ROM.
And you post this in wrong section.

Apologies, new to the forum it's been moved now!

Yeah .. requested it to be moved to correct section.
So .. you need to restore your stock ROM and do OTA up to 4.19.61.2
What's your current firmware version .. 3.33.61.9 or 2.26.61.1 ? Or even lower ?
Check what's written on bootloader - hboot 3.16 or 3.18 .. you need 3.19

That's a very low version ... you need to restore to stock backup 1.54.61.5
But I deleted my TWRP backup for most 1.xx.xxx.x only keep 2.x; 3x & 4x
There is someone else backup made with Philz recovery so you need to download Philz recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703223
then download the backup : https://mega.co.nz/#!WhwRmSoJ!QJxmI0gYj7t_0Hc4fMKx0XLYQ2n45S3OfrEcDRS3C-s
restore that backup with the stock recovery (included in that backup if I'm not wrong)
then do multiple OTA

Okay cheers for your help!

I was trying to adb push the firmware to my phone to then install it on Recovery but when im typing "adb devices" it says list of devices attached then it is blank. I have been trying to search for solutions but I cant seem to fix it. If you have any advice it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Has anyone got an idea?

This is usually an issue on the computer's side (PC?). Try to re-install HTC drivers, try another USB port, or another cable. Also, if you have USB 3.0, this is known to cause issues with adb connectivity (apparently, you can disable this).
Also, you need to be booted into OS or in recovery for adb to work (does not work in bootloader) and you need to have USB debugging activated in Settings.
And when you say "firmware" I think you mean a nandroid backup, based on the instructions previously given to you? Be careful using the term "firmware" here, as most folks use that term to specifically mean the firmware.zip that contains hboot, radio etc. (but not ROM).

Don't you have a MicroSD ? Put the extracted nandroid on MicroSD at the right location clockworkmod\backups\ is easier than doing that ADB push.

Okay finally got the nandroid backup installed. Then when i tried to install the OTA update it took me to CWM and failed. So i then relocked and tried again to update OTA and it took me to the bootloader with a ***Relocked*** and *** Security Warning*** any ideas ?

You need to re-install the stock recovery in order to OTA. Bootloader lock has nothing to do with it (will OTA with unlocked bootloader).

I have installed the Nandroid backup mentioned above to stock i believe. Is this the correct step or is this still not stock ? it was 1.54.61.5

Stock ROM backup and stock recovery are two different things.
You need to fastboot flash recovery recovery.img to replace the CWM that you have now. Inside the backup zip, there is a recovery.img .. take this out and fastboot flash it.
You need to unlock bootloader to flash it.

when using the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" using the recovery.img from the unzipped nandroid folder the process runs and it says okay with no errors then when i try go into recovery the red triangle and exclamation mark appear again

Yes that's stock recovery. Perform the ota now

Because that is stock recovery. You don't need to get into recovery.
Just reboot, check OTA, download then select install.
Let the system do the installation on its own

What sense version do you want in result: 4+ or 5?
Did you update your phone via OTA earlier?
Post bootloader error here, please. Looks like your bootloader is updated and do not match requirements to flash RUU from Hutchison.
1.- i dont know what is better, if 4+ or 5.
2.- in fact the phone was updated by other person, i don't know what he did :/
3.- let me flash ruu again and post bootloader error.
if it's usefull, it has Team Win Recovery Project v2.4.1.0 installed.
thanks for reply

Well, looks like firmware\hboot was updated and latest RUU for your CID requires older firmware\hboot.
So, you can't use old RUU to go back to stock.
You need to flash stock ROM for 1.39 hboot from recovery
Try to find ROM like this one, but older: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546970&highlight=*stock*
I guess you need to search 3.18 or 3.20 version, don't remember wwich one will work with 1.39
ok, i'll search it.
thank you sir, i'll let you know the results.
one more question, can i use this method posted here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927048
exactly this:
Nand for H3G__106 - thanks to Jackster88
Part 1
Part 2
Quote:
Instructions:
***For this nand to work you need HBOOT 1.39 and cwm***
1) go into fastboot and enter "fastboot oem lock" - the device will reboot
2) go into fastboot again and enter "fastboot oem rebootRUU" - there will be a black screen with a silverish HTC logo
3) enter "fastboot flash zip firmware.zip" (you need the firmware.zip from page 1 for this)
3a) enter the same again, the green bar under the logo should go to 100% (either after the first or second time)
4) enter "fastboot reboot-bootloader" to go back to your fastboot
5) unlock your device again with the unlock code ("fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin")
6) Restore your old boot.img (fastboot flash boot name_of_boot_file.img) and recovery (fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery_file.img), make sure you copied them from the nandroid backup folder we created earlier into the folder that contains the fastboot.exe you're using.
7) Reboot and you should now have Hboot 1.39 with your old boot and recovery.
(8) If it won't work we still have the backup ready to restore the old system, Hboot isn't changeable right now on S-ON devices outside of the RUU routine - so even if you restore your nandroid you should still have Hboot 1.39 now)
Confirmed working with H3G__001, H3G__003, H3g__G04

Problems during restoring phone

Hi everyone,
I'm stuck, I am trying to restore my HTC One X to stock as I am sending off for repair, however its not working. I've read many tutorials but I'm still not getting anywhere.
I've locked the phone, replaced the recovery.img and replaced the boot.img however the RUU won't install.
My phone is from Australia, Virgin and has the CID of: CID_023
My original Nandroid back-up is gone, so I can't use that.
Can anyone give me some advice on what I might be doing wrong and what information you require to help me?

You must to restore nandroid backup no RRU for nwer base more then 3.14. NOW
1. Install this recovery with command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
2. download this Nandroid Backup
3. go in recovery mount the sd card and unrar the nandroid backup to your computer after this paste on your SD card in folder Backup
4. flash the boot.img, erase cache, and restor nandroid from recovery.
5. You must to install stock recovery and you are full stock and you can receive OTA

Thank you for your help, so the problem for me was the 3.14 update I had applied. I can't download the file at work, I'll try at home later.
Thant, I want to thank you for your assistance with this problem. Your solution worked, I was able to install the OTA update.
The guides I was following used the RUU as the solution to those without a working Nandroid back up of their own, I wasn't aware that 3.14 or newer could be a problem for that. It is a shame out of date guides are not removed or updated.
I had seen people upload nandroid backups, but I didn't trust those. I decided to take a chance with yours and it worked for me.

Okay I'm going crazy SuperSU is on my phone and I can't get rid of it. I couldn't uninstall it, so I re-rooted the phone, installed custom recovery, installed SuperSU binaries then tried to uninstall. But every reboot reinstalls the application. Argh!!!
Any help with this?
Okay fixed the SuperSU problem, unfortunately the Nadroid backup supplied was not a stock image, still worked though when I did a factory reset, restored nandroid backup, install SU binaries, uninstalled SuperSU from OS, restored recovery, locked OEM, downloaded OTA and installed it.
So it all looks good except the recovery option comes up with an image of a phone and a large red exclamation mark, I assume this means the recovery.img doesn't match. Is there a way to fix this as I'd like my phone repaired?
Thank you
-EDIT-
Okay, I've done some more reading and learnt a little more, which is great.
I believe I need recovery.img for 4.19.728.3, so that will match the software on my phone. I've tried stock recovery for 4.19.707.3 but that didn't work.
I wonder if I should downgrade everything. Say downgrade HBOOT to 1.39, then install stock software of 4.18 and removing SuperSU, then flash stock recovery, lock the phone and attempt a OTA update to update everything. I'm assuming an OTA update would update HBOOT to 1.73, the software to 4.19 and the recovery will also be updated to work. Is this a good solution perhaps?

[Q] Get back to stock M8 VODAP110 - Having massive problems

Good morning guys.
I am wondering if anyone is able to help me before i go completely nuts trying to work this out. (I also hope its ok to make a new thread)
A few weeks ago i rooted my M8 following the steps on this website (htconeroot. - how-to-root-htc-one-m8/) with no issues at all. Unlocked the boot loader and also there is the software tag saying modified (my understanding is this is normal). Installed the custom recovery with no drama.
A couple of days ago i got the OTA notification that i can now download 5.0.1 (Happy days) however this is where i seem to be running into problems. I know that i need to revert to the stock recovery from TWRP and then from here need to relock the boot loader to install the OTA update. I think my main problem is that i don't know what version of the stock rom i need to install. I have tried a few but none of them will boot into recovery from the boot loader.
So this is where i am.
Boot loader works fine and will run fast boot and boot to custom recovery - does state that the OS - (Blank)

I have a swisscom locked phone (VODAP110) the software version is (3.29.166.9 from phone) however the main-version is blank, another website said i need a stock recovery (x.xx.166.x - Vodafone CH-DE (Switzerland - Germany))
The last stock recovery that i put on the phone was (3.29.161.5 recovery.img) this then would allow me to start the phone and run the OTA update. From here the phone will restart and start the update but after about 20/25% the phone will crash displaying a picture of the phone with a red triangle and upside down exclamation mark. I read somewhere that if this problem happens to erase the cache and it should fix the problem but it didn't.
Could anyone please point me in the correct direction or help me solve the problem i am having.
Do i need to ?????
1) install the correct stock recovery (if so could someone please help me find the correct version)
2) Flash the stock rom from HTCDev (no clue how to do this with fast boot and if it will restore the recovery)
3) Give up on OTA and look for a custom 5.0.1 flash and use TWRP to flash from recovery.
Thanks so much for any help.

Maybe this one works? This is the 3.29.161.9 recovery. It's from my VODAPE17 cid
1: download the ota, take out the firmware.zip and in that zip is a recovery.img. that is your correct stock recovery that you need.
2: go to the general section - collection of backups and firmwares. Have a read there and look for your cid in the list with backups.
Please do not relock the bootloader that is not needed for an ota !
And delete your serial !
I was forgotten to paste the url: https://mega.co.nz/#!nZkCWZAL!djqZnzAlVfHslzWJxUxvW5cLKHdI9BIhr_uxzjFxbng
I also have this Problem with my M8 (3.29.166.9). I also flashed the new recovery from the OTA, but when i flashed the OTA, the recovery wrote Status 7 error ...
New download of the OTA doesn't worked..
Any Idea ?
Sorted

Back to stock problem
Hello,i have a similar problem. I did everthing as you, rooted, custom recovery and unlock bootloader on htcdev, all to try out custom roms like arhd and so on. But i didn't do a nandroid backup, because i'm a fool and didn't know what i was doing. When i wanted to go back to stock i tried flashing 3.29.161.9 as it's similar to our stock rom but had no luck, still no updates. When i go to fastboot my os says os-3.29.166.9,so clearly there lies i problem. i need i stock 3.29.166.9 nandroid backup so i can go to stock. i've downloaded the recovery you uploaded and put it in 3.29.161.9 rom but no luck. So can you please upload a 3.29.166.9 nandrod backup. Thanks in advance. And mister Petert87 and Mr Hofs if you have any idea how to solve my problem please tell can you tell me. Cheers guys

Are you running a rooted stock ROM when your phone now not working ? If yes, can you install TWRP recovery and make backup of the system part only. Then upload it for me, I'll try to fix it. I've done this many times with other rare ROM like WIND, Taiwan version, Optus, Telstra and many more.
If possible, just PM me the link.. this is the only way that I can help you and @dexterts

No. I don't have because I can't find any version nandroid for x.xx.166.x anywhere out of XDA
That's why I'm asking these guys to help them
And if that @raynordg guy respond to notification ... he can help too. He was scared about his data on nandroid backup ... system partition has no user data.

Yes ... change CID and flash EU WWE RUU if you want it on .401
If only firmware, you can restore a EU WWE backup and do OTA .. but for now only lollipop the latest and there's already lollipop RUU, you can check EddyOS thread for RUU method : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235

H3G__001 stock lollipop nandroid

Hi im trying to update to lollipop on my 3 UK branded m8 but im having serious issues upgrading to 4.4.4 eye experience version 3.32.771.3 was wondering if anyone has or could get a nandroid of the stock 4.20.771.2 ROM. I can see an OTA in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376 but I have no idea how to use those OTA files. Any help would be appreciated.
Post your fastboot getvar all result (minus serial no. & imei no.)
then we know which backup that you really need.
No point to give you 4.20.771.2 backup for now.

cool thanks. I tried your nandroid backup and it starts up fine but I cant connect to my wifi network. It sees the network but it wont connect. It does allow me to connect to another open network I can see but not my own. This happened on one of the stock updates I did too. Any ideas why this might be? or how it might be fixed?

There are two options :
1. Restore 3.32.771.10 backup and its stock recovery image then do OTA to 4.20.771.2
You can have all the needed files here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55322461&postcount=1897
Or
2. Reflashed the untouched 4.20.771.2 firmware that linked here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58781201&postcount=4598
but you need to relock bootloader in order to do that.
a. put your device in bootloader/fastboot mode
b. relock bootloader - fastboot oem lock
c. run these commands
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip 4.20.771.2_firmware.zip
fastboot flash zip 4.20.771.2_firmware.zip .....( again for the 2nd time)
fastboot reboot
d. check your wifi
For me .. 1st option is a better choice

so I tried option 2 first and that didnt work Then I tried option 1. Flashing 3.32.... worked ok wifi working etc. I then did the OTA that popped up. That flashed and it boots up but system ui force closes and wifi doesnt turn on at all Is there anyway to flash your OTA update specifically and avoid downloading and flashing the one that pops up on screen?

You can't flash OTA manually because your device is S-On.
When you have system ui force close and wifi doesn't turn on at all ... that's a good sign.
What you need to do now is unlock bootloader again with unlock_code.bin that you received from HTC. Then install TWRP 2.8.5.0. Boot to TWRP recovery, select mount - advance - format data - yes
Reboot - check your wifi again - system ui should work and wifi should work too.
Then restore my 4.20.771.2 backup (reason is when re-unlock bootloader and format data .. all data files such as calculator & flashlight & etc are removed)
EDIT : before you do the above, please try boot to recovery where you see the red triangle .. press & hold volume up & press power once.
In stock recovery, select factory reset/wipe data ... reboot

before I saw your message I did a factory rest from stock recovery as you suggested in your edit and system ui force close was fixed and wifi does turn on... but im back to the problem of not being able to connect to my wifi network. I've managed to connect to 2 separate open (public) networks fine but cant connect to mine for some reason. I cant understand why this might be happening.
Thanks for all the help by the way really appreciate it!
That's something I'm not familiar with as I never have that problem before. I read a few thread of this kind of wifi problem .. there are a few suggestions such as reset the router, try change wifi password and a few more like 2.4GHz & 5.0 GHz problem
Maybe someone else more familiar with this kind of problem will step in.

Lost RUU backup
Hi I to am trying to revert back to stock on my HTC one M8 (Three UK H3g__00)1 but I have lost my original backups do to an hdd fail the RUU files you posted on here I believe I could have used but the links no longer work
My phone is in a bad way at the moment it is softbricked with the latest version of CWRM on and no OS currently installed, is this why my version main appears blank?
My phone has ended up in this state after trying to install the latest android revolution rom (5.0.1). The rom seemed to install ok booted and setup fine but my Wifi wouldn't turn ON at all. After I rebooted the phone for the first time it got stuck in a boot loop.
I deally would like to get lollipop on the phone and doing some reading I believe with the situation I'm in I have to go back to stock and do the OTA updates to raise my hboot version to 3.18 or above, that way I could install cyanogen 12.1

Hi ckpv5, thanks I will give this a try now, I did try to flash TWRP 2.8.7.0 recently but when I tried to enter the recovery it just hung and I never figured out why. I will give 2.8.1.0 a go now.
Last night, just to get my phone working I flashed on cm-11-20141112-SNAPSHOT-M12-m8 with open_gapps-arm-4.4-mini-20151203. It all seemed to be working fine and I liked the look and feel of the KitKat cyanogenmod but after I received my first phone call my phone speaker went crazy and gave some nasty distortion out, I rebooted the phone to stop it and now I have the noise on everything if I turn my volume up to mid/high, I'm worried my speakers are damaged. I followed a couple of threads to install the viperapp but with no success, any ideas on this one?
Cheers,
Thanks
CHeers ckpv5 Ifollowed the guide used the files and its all sorted now.
Looks like CM11 has damaged my bottom speaker though i have ordered a replacement.
I do have 1 last question, after all the updating i have now put cm12.1 on and it seems to be running ok however when im booted into the OS my SD card is not being detected. If i drop back into TWRP recovery it does recognise the SD card, any ideas? im searching for a solution now.
I can't comment anything on CM as I never use one .. no experience on CM .. sorry.

so far i have downloaded the ota update within stock sense, however as soon as i go to update it, it takes me straight to the twrp recovery. making it unable to install the update. and i know that i must revert to the stock recovery to do so.
To fully revert my HTC m8 i have 2 options
1. find a RUU compatible with my device.
2. find a stock recovery image.
So far i have had no luck with finding a working RUU, and the closest i have gotten was flashing a ruu.zip that matched my software number and kernal with the hasoon 2000 v2 toolkit, however i received: signature verify failed
is anyone able to find me a RUU that is compatible with my device and tell me the steps to running/installing this RUU, or are you able to find me a stock recovery image that is compatible with my device.
p.s. if i am to install the wrong stock recovery is there anyway to fix it? as i do not want to run into a brick.
(extra information: I am living in New Zealand, Using Vodafone as my carrier)
Thanks.

Thanks you for you quick response, I am pretty sure I understand but just to clarify a little. Am I meant to restore to that 1.12.710.17 VIA TWRP restore.
Also even though this stock recovery should be correct, would flashing the wrong stock recovery lead to problems ?
Thanks.
Tom.

Use Philz touch recovery to restore the backup and the flash the stock recovery.
Those files won't work for your device that has a higher version hboot 3.19.0000 and S-On.
You'll get stuck when applying OTA.
You said that you have stock ROM running. What you need is stock recovery image.
Get your stock recovery image 3.32.710.9 here :

Ok Thanks. But are you able to provide me with the direct link to the download I need as I am abit confused by that post.
Also to answer my other question. What is to happen if you install the wrong stock recovery or something goes wrong in the installation process of the stock recovery?
Thanks.
Tom.
Click on the numbers, for your case click on 3.32.710.9 then you get the link.
If you install a wrong stock recovery, your OTA installation will fail. That's all.
If your installation fails due to ROM not stock enough, make a request for the stock backup in that thread then I'll update with link to download stock ROM backup.

Hi Tom Hyde,
I am glad to see you solved a problem I am experiencing...
I want to update from 4.4.4 to lollipop, I need the VODAP021, 3.32.710.9 stock recovery
Can you please tell me how your extracted the stock recovery from that link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-...-twrp-t3086860)? I downloaded the whole file (1.4GB) as a zip file, but once open I cant find the stock recovery.img file that I need. How did you do it?
Many Thanks

Hi ckpv5,
I dowloaded the stock recovery I needed and it worked. I update from 4.4.4 kitkat to 5.0.1 Lollipop. Now my phone software number is 4.20.710.5
But after the update I run through some problems:
1. Right after the update, I got a notification for another system update 4.20.710.7. So I hit the download and install. But the install didn't complete, it stopped with that red triangle. So I rebooted back to 4.20.710.5
2. My phone shows that I have coverage and data connections, but I cant use internet for some reason. It works fine on Wi-fi though
3. Using ES file explorer, I cant detect my external sdcard. Can't play music on my external sdcard
Would you know how to solve the above issues?
Many Thanks
1. When you have that red triangle, you hold and press volume up button and tap power button once. This will take you to the recovery page where you can read what error tha you have. Usually unexpected content of some system files
2. Check what OS is written on bootloader - is it 4.20.710.5 or 4.20.710.7
I believe the update failed and you still have 4.20.710.5 written on bootloader
3. No idea about that. What you can do is restore a non-rooted stock 4.20.710.5 backup (system part is enough). You can get the backup in my thread. Then redo OTA.

Thanks again for your reply.
1.I pressed the volume up and power buttons, and I got this message:
Fiinding update package...
OPening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
L50QCT.01.101.009
Package expects build fingerprint of Htc/htc_asia_aus/htc_m8:5.0.1/LRX22C/463267.5:user/release-keys or htc/htc_asia_aus/htc_m8:5.0.1/LRX22C/463267.7:user/release-keys; this device has htc/htc_asia_aus/htc_m8:4.4.4/KTU84P/397296.9:user/release-keys
Installation aborted
Write host_mode: 0 done
2. Yes bootloader is still 4.20.710.5
3.When I used the non-rooted 3.32.710.9 stock to update to 4.20.710.5. Does it mean my stock recovery is also updated or it remains the 4.4.4 one?
Hopefully I am making sense
1. The error shows that wrong recovery is used for OTA.
It expects 4.20.710.5 or 4.20.710.7 recovery but your device has 3.32.710.9 recovery installed.
2. As expected
3. The recovery should get updated with OTA and it's weird that you have the old recovery intact.
Like it's weird that the latest AUS OTA has funny file in it - a z01 file or something that some people say it's some video file.
You can try again the OTA. Install 4.20.710.5 recovery and see how it goes.
Issue!! (SOLVED)

I was having this same issue when trying to process the OTA update.
i was on stock recovery 3.32.710.9 (device had stock rom yet was rooted). each time i tried to process the OTA update it got halfway and then displayed the red triangle.
i followed your idea and flashed the other stock recovery (4.20.710.5) i then proceeded to install the OTA update. The update seemed to work, however now the phone boots and gets stuck at the HTC one screen (second htc one screen) i am now lost for what to do, any idea?
EDIT: i managed to get to the bootloader by holding power and volume up and then switching to volume down after the screen turns black. what procedure should i undertake once i am at the bootloader (remember: i have recovery 4.20.710.5 and i had just done the update)
extra info: i can use fastboot commands from pc and i receive the following information
C:\Users\Tom\Desktop\Toms Backup\ssd items\Stuff_for_Android_Phone\returning to stock recovery and sense\fastboot\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>fastboot oem readcid

SECOND EDIT: sorry for another edit but i have fixed the problem
i tried all three recoveries or 3.32.710.9, 4.20.710.5 and 4.20.710.7 however they all resorted in a bootloop. i finally decided to flash the twrp recovery and luckily i had a stock 4.4.4 android backup on my sd card. i restored to this backup via twrp and the phone boots up normally.
i will now go bout flashing the stock recovery and trying to update from there, without rooting.
sorry for wasting your time reading this.

It was mentioned before, you can't do OTA with a rooted ROM.
Actually you can use 4.20.710.5 backup that I have in my thread, then you need to do 2 OTAs only 4.20.710.7 and 4.20.710.9
If the 4.4.4 backup is good then it's good.
If it fails or you get stuck you can try 4.20.710.5 or just wait I update the link for 4.20.710.7 when I'm home on Sunday.
