[Q] First Time Rooting - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've never rooted a phone before but I want to start.
I bought this old Droid Incredible from ebay and am trying to get basically the most up to date version of Android on it. I'm doing some app development so something that is as up to date as possible is nice.
I've been reading all the different posts and whatnot on how to do this. However it seems that half the links are dead because the posts are 2 years old.
So if anyone can help me with just some steps on how to root my phone and put one of the most updated ROMS on it I would quite appreciate it.

Here's an excellent guide for rooting the Droid Incredible:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600904
You only need steps 1 through 3 of that guide to get root and be able to flash custom roms, though if you want to go the whole way and disable the secure boot flag on the radio, you can follow the guide to the end, it works.
The latest stock rom is Gingerbread. There are newer custom roms, the newest one being this one, which is kitkat:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2579031
This build of Jelly Bean was pretty good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050930
Finally, if you run into dead links in your search for a particular file for the Droid Incredible, scour this site:

Hope that helps. Have fun!

[Q]is it possible to root/install custom roms safely to a desire z 2.3 ota from htc?

Can i safely root/install custom roms in a desire z that was upgraded to gingerbread?
I am completely new to rooting/installing custom roms to any android phone. i held out doing so because my original plan was to wait for the 2.3 update from htc. using the official update is a nightmare. i always have lags in messaging and the sense always restarts when i go back to the home screen. can i safely root and install custom roms in my phone? can anyone point me to a very easy to follow guide to do so? thank you very much.
tsk tsk tsk
dude... first of all: USE SEARCH FUNCTION!!! XDA mods have hard time maintaining the community and thousands (hundreds of) posts as is so any unnecessary posts should really be avoided.. back to thread..
Is it possible? YES! Is it safe??? No way!!!
As you can probably see in every single rooting/custom ROM flashing tutorial/guide - there's no such thing as "safe rooting/installation of custom ROM" and nobody will give you any guarantees there. ppl share their experiences but those don't necessarily relate to your (or any) other device in general.
if you mess with your phone - you must be mentally prepared for the worst, otherwise - don't do it.
there's a thread which already covers this topic

also - WIKI is your friend!!! cheerz!

Just give the search a chance
thank you very much for your answers alcak4ever and QSchachi. i followed the link above and did it.so far im think i got it. the only problem is the download for the rom is slow.hehe. thanks again!
"Safe" is a relative term. Almost any phone modding carries some risk of damaging your device (brick, soft brick, etc.). But if you read up BEFORE you start, and follow the instructions carefully, the risk is pretty small. Just do the research, and understand the risks, and you should be fine.

I don't have any opinions on 1 or 2. As for 3, you do have some choices. A few of the options are, a leaked official AT&T ICS for the Nitro, nightly or RC2 for CM9, and now we even have an early preview of CM10 (Jelly Bean). Best thing to do is check out the Development sub-forum and see what you might like.
i came from a galaxy s vibrant recently to this phone.
to be honest, I was kind of disappointed at first with the battery life and lag, but that all went away once I rooted, flashed CM9 (the recent nightlies are faaaaaast) The battery life got better over time once I recalibrated it also, but now I went to the hyperion extended battery and battery life seems to be a lot better.
The HD screen is <3 When you look at a device without the HD display you'll be wondering why are the words so pixelated
I think I'm going to install CM10 preview soon too once I get my SD card.. 2gb is not enough. A CWM backup takes up almost 1 gig ._.
i was reading HO!NO! P930 UDT v18f 04112012-CWM-Flashable! thread. whats this unbricking people are talking about?

unbricking is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488 It's the only way to flash stock firmware in case of trouble.
And where is the tread about CM10 you're speaking? I can't find, eager to flash preview

It's in the development thread. If you want stable, go with cm9 first. Then you can compare to CM10.

1. Coming from the Samsung Galaxy S, I love this phone! The HD screen is great and it has everything I want/need in my phone: LTE, performance, and hackability/dev support.
2. Like people have stated there are a few good ones. I'm currently running CM9 RC1 (planning to flash to HO!NO!'s Full throttle soon) and haven't had any problems so far. At first it was a little rough but after a few days it settled and it's been pretty smooth since, no issues. I tried flashing full throttle but had some issues installing it (it would bootloop). I would say Full Throttle would be a little more work to get working but from I've read once it's working it's fantastic. HO!NO! is putting a lot of work into it though and has frequent releases and improvements, and he usually incorporates the latest CM9 updates.
I haven't tried any others but I've heard the ICS leak runs very well and would probably make a good daily driver, just be prepared to unbrick your phone should you want a different ROM in the future. If you don't want to flash ROMs that often, I'd say go with a CM9 RC or the ICS leak. If you don't mind flashing ROMs then try out some of the other ROMs (Andasa's CM9 Hybrid, HO!NO!'s Full Throttle, CM9 Nightly, CM10) and see what you like.
3. I believe this has been answered
Hot damn! i just got the phone and im loving it! but im a total noob at this phone.
I need help pointing me in the right direction of rooting/installing cwm/Flashing a rom

It depends what firmware your device came with as some of them aren't rootable. For me I used SuperOneClick (v2.2 I think). You might need to attempt it a few times, (i think I had to disconnect and reconnect at one point as well to get it to finish).
You could also started out by following the unbricking guide to unbrick the phone (and follow the Easy CWM unbrick guide to make unbricking easier in the future). This would give you complete freedom to try any ROM (like the ICS leak with CWM) and from what I've read, fix some problems with the sdcard as well
p.s. Check the development section for rooting guides. I believe the v10j firmware is the rootable one.

The version we are talking about would be under baseband version in about phone (settings)
It should say P930 followed by something then V two numbers and a letter, this is your version.
P930-*********-V11a (for example. The V11a version here is the one I have and is root able)

Best thing if you want Stock ROM is Android Revolution HD, BEST stock based ROM (Sense 3.0, 2.3.5 Gingerbread)
Although you might like to experiment with other Android versions, like AOSP (exactly as Google intended it), AOKP (slightly modified), CyanogenMod (Different thing altogether) or even MIUI (if you like the iPhone's simplicity)

[Q] Simple KitKat 4.4 help requested

Hello there! Im here with a request if someone can help with unlocking, rooting, clockwork mod and custom rom stuff.
Im using Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GSM) Maguro running on the lastest android 4.3 and since 4.4 is out from 2 weeks or so i really wanna get it on my phone even when Google wont update our gnexus with their latest os. I know the current state of the KitKat 4.4 AOSP versions is not 100% stable and mainly those gfx issues when rotating and stuff but ill be okay.
I know there are alot of guides out there but all i need is a simplified one with intel from where to start to where to end it.
There are many stuff on the internet ive already searched but somehow i dont do it because of all the info inside it.
I know to read and before my galaxy nexus i had the Sony X8 using custom rom GDX+ and it worked well everything was easy. But with my nexus now i think there are more things to do now.
All im asking is the easiest way to get it ready to flash the package and the GAPPS. (i already picked the one from here and i have the gapps on my pc) Now i need info on how to unlock and everything with clockworkmod and backup my current os.
Thanks in advance!
No offense, but if you can't follow the guides in here on how too unlock/custom recovery/root then no one in the world can.
The methods showed here are simplest as it gets!!
As a last alternative, try the GNEX TOOLKIT V11.1.0
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Hi I second this. I would also like a stable, stock, deodexed, rooted and busyboxed kitkat rom for my gsm gnexus with instructions on flashing and installing gapps. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hey ADDOriN, what's up?
First of all, I found the same problem as you... I spent some hours trying to understand the whole process and honestly didn't reach my goal... The tutorial pointed out by the friend t1.8matt is great and easy, but if you don't feel confartable yet, you can try to follow the steps on youtube video called "How To Root Android 4.3 On the galaxy nexus" made by Manley (sorry, but as a noob, I can't post the link)
Some considerations about:
- the tutorial uses CWM but depending on the version of 4.4, you should use TWRP... The process to apply the image file is the same, differing only in root step
- if your bootloader is locked, in the moment you unlock it, all your data will be erased, so a backup is highly recommended
The GNex Toolkit 11.1.0 quoted by the friend wysefreakz is easier than made everything by hand, but honestly, I didn't find an information if it is or isn't compatible with 4.3 version, so I chose to the "hand-made" method.
Just to say, I used custom firmwares on my old Defy and made the same for a Galaxy S, but I found some doubts to gnexus (even had converted it from yakjuvs to yakju in the past)
I hope I can help you
I would not use a toolkit, as pointed out by many experienced users, they can do more harm than good. Not always the case but it is possible. I you get the android SDK setup on your computer, its actually not hard using adb and fastboot once you learn the commands. There are plenty of tutorials out there to help you with getting it setup and learning about adb and fastboot.
@leocasarin, @t1.8matt, @wisefreakz Thank you guys!
Actually there is no problem for me is to follow slowly the tutorials here and there. I made this thread to ask if there is something i didnt found my rolling on the forums or the internet as general. @t1.8matt yes the tutorial you give me is maybe the one ill follow. @leocasarin i will follow the ideas you said to me and im really thankful.
NINJA EDIT: I just used the video tutorial posted from @leocasarin and i completed everything and i now have KitKat 4.4! KUDOS FOR YOU MATE <3

[Q] Droid Incredible Root and other questions

I recently purchased an HTC Droid Incredible at a yardsale, For get ready for this... $0.50 USD. The lady said it was her sons and he upgraded it to another phone, then lost it... then they found it and now selling it.
I basically just want to use it for music and occasional internet. So I'd like to ROOT it and find maybe a custom ROM that is stripped out and lightweight on resources.
The bastard thing did system updates on it's own, so I don't know if it can be rooted or not now.... And if so; how and what ROM would be recommended?
follow the guide somewhere on this forum or google it. you have to unlock the bootloader via the HTC website and using ADB. This is the way to unlock your device permanently;. None of the old exploit methods really work anymore.
Once you unlock it, you can install custom recovery and alternate roms. it;s a process but the instructions are pretty cut and dried. The Dinc is one of the most documented Android devices out there.

Hi! The only hard part is finding ROM links that are still good. Here are some that I liked back in the day:
Gingerbread: http://d-h.st/N11
Jellybean: https://goo.im/devs/tiny4579/inc/cm10.1/cm-10.1-20130504-TINY-inc.zip
Kitkat: http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=5951#downloads
Keep in mind that Gingerbread is the last officially supported Android version for this device, anything newer will have some bugs, mainly with the camera.
