Best fitness band as an alarm? - General Accessories

I'm looking for a fitness band which I'm primarily going to use as an silent alarm and secondary to track my steps. It should also be able to sync with Android.
I've heard that some fitness bands are really bad at waking one up as the vibration is too weak, thus I'm looking for some recommendations on fitness bands that does a great job waking one up!
Thanks!

I don't know if it's the "BEST" but I have some runner friends who have FitBits and I've heard them talking about this before. I didn't pay close attention to hear which fitness band they said was a weak alarm, but I know they've said the FitBit works well as an alarm. I don't know if you're close to a store that has these things to try on, but if you are, ask the associate if you can try them out and feel which is the most jolting.

Thanks for your input!
The thing is, I would probably have to fall asleep with one to actually know if it could easily wake me up from the vibration. That's why I thought it would help asking people who might be experienced with one.

Yeah I hear you. Trying them on in a store is one thing but napping on the couch is another matter altogether. I even tried to do a bit of searching on google for this but came up short. Best bet might be to check some running blogs or the one particular reviewer I always used to recommend to people:

Note that you don't necessarily have to get the fitbit force or the fitbit flex to use as an alarm. The fitbit one also comes with a wrist strap for night time use. In fact, I would recommend getting the fitbit one instead of the strap versions unless if you specifically want a strap version because both the Force and Flex are known to have issues.

Thanks for the heads up! I specifically want a strap because of its convenience, maybe I should stay out of fitbit then? I'm leaning towards Jawbone as of now, still undecided. If anyone have a suggestion of another forum created for outdoors people, feel free to share them.
Edit: so I orded the Jawbone Up24, gonna pick it up tomorrow and see if it will work.

@QNBT
Hi I'm curious about this as well, my gf is traumatized by my alarm clock and I wanted to try out some silent alarms. Can you share your experience with the jawbone? Was looking at the zband but I'm having second thoughts..

If you're ONLY going to use it as an alarm clock/sleep tracker, then you should consider this product. You're able to check your infographics on the app easily and they're summarized pretty neatly. You can also opt for a weekly recap which will be sent to your inbox (see attached image).
With the new software update you're able to get "up to 14 days" battery. Since I kinda only used it for sleep tracking/alarm it does surpass at least 10 days. I've only used it for about 2 weeks myself, and I recharged it before the battery went out, thus I'm not able to confirm 14 days of usage without recharge. I still think 10 - 12 days is good, previously the battery was marketed as only lasting 7 days (again, not able to confirm as I updated my device on the second day), it takes really really fast to recharge anyways.
However, a lot of things outside that scope is broken. Reminder alarms (used for bedtime reminder etc.) will still go off if you go to bed earlier, even with "sleep mode" (sleep tracking mode) set to on, which is kinda ironic as it will wake you up instead. The step counter out of the box is insanely inaccurate, it even counts your steps when you're asleep, sometimes I got over 300 steps after waking up. You are able to calibrate it, but since I don't care too much for it I haven't done that yet. As for food tracking, according to the forum people seem to think it lacks functionalities, or maybe they're just greedy (haven't used this function at all).
People have also been asking for vibration(patterns) upon receiving notifications for over a year. While the forum admin has responded that it was a "great idea" (paraphrased), there has been no more news on that.
To recap, great battery life, work great as an alarm/sleep tracker, the rest of its feature is "ok".
You can check out other screenshots on their website, but since they don't show off the weekly recap I though I'd include a screenshot of it:

Thank you for your prompt reply. Indeed I only intend to use it as a silent alarm clock. Another question though, would you say you are a deep sleeper? How strong is the vibration and is it able to wake you up gently as opposed to abruptly?

I'm no longer deep sleeper now that I'm omw of reverting my sleeping routines to normal hours. During the course of using this product I've been woken during times when I'm about to wake up and during snoozes (those times when I wake up before the alarm). I'd say it wakes you up pretty gently, the vibration isn't too strong but it won't stop vibrating unless you press the button.

Does anybody have one? What are your thoughts? Does it work well with the Evo?
i read some feedback from people in europe who have them already as well as people who bought from europe and had em shipped here (wasn't on this forum) and unfortunately all the feedback was negative..people said the device has all kinds of issues right now with not staying paired with bluetooth and other random stuff...
kind of a bummer because i really wanted one until i read the reviews...hopefully they make it better with future updates and hopefully when they do that they'll release it in the US...the device looks like it has so much potential, would be a shame if it went to waste..

I have the device, and although it has a lot of potential, SE f*cked up. Connections are unstable and without a stable connection the device is useless. The firmware can't be updated, so thats, that.
the firmware can't be updated? are u sure?
that blows! gg SE
I've got one now boxed up and ready to go back. Problems... won't stay paired, locks up, battery only last a day, not a true touch screen, no built in clock, easily falls off wrist band, not firmwear updateable....
Great idea, terrible implementation
I also have their older traditional bluetooth watch which is solid as a rock and looks "normal".
i heard an update was suppose to come out in january.. any better after the update?
I did the latest firmware update and I would say that 90% of problems are fixed. My device stays connected and now has up to 30plugins instead of just 5 - lol!
It is my daily watch and it really inst sensitive to water as i have accidentally done dishes with it on!
It is very useful for business or prosumer crowd. People who get a lot of emails, calls, etc but do not want to be rude and constantly having a hand on the phone or Bluetooth in their ear.
Go for it, best watch for the money IMO!
Hi, just got one, charging it now - can you tell me best apps?
cheers.

Question, for the people that have this. what ROM are you using? i'm using it with mikFroyo v4.6 and i have a hard time keeping the bluetooth connection going. i have to constantly turn off bluetooth and turn it back on. I already removed liveview manager which caused other problems, and i did update the liveview to the latest version.
thanks

Same issue even after the update on CM7. So I don't use it much
It looks cool but I would rather just mess with my phone instead. I think it would be just as rude to be checking your watch every so often as it would be to check your phone......just saying
Genuinely pissed off with sony
So TODAY. I pop the watch off of the band like normal and a PIECE OF PLASTIC popped clean off. I calmly explained and sent several pictures of what it was. there is no other damage (not even scratches) to the Device. I explain how it is a cleave in the plastic because it was not properly tempered and mixed, just something that happens because of factory defects. I also explain a bit of how I know this and some good common examples.
Here is the picture that shows the damage the best:
Now companies like HTC, Motorola, and Apple recognize mechanical defects and fix them. If this was purposeful damage, more would be damaged and something would be every scratched instead of a piece of plastic with a clean cleave.
This is the quoted response from Sony-Ericsson:

This "damage" is a materials defect. Honestly I cannot wait to hear how they justify this and sent them another email. 3 months of use popping it on and off to charge only. Screw Sony at this point. The whole Geohot thing, their lawsuits have been everywhere, phones come out a year or two too late, have terrible software support, and quality has gone extremely wayside. Sorry, just when you think they are going to do something worthy of the Sony from 20 years ago you quickly find out that it is the same cheap Chinese crap with a japanese label they switched to 18 years ago.
Maybe we should all fill out their survey. Even though a couple XDA members are working on fixes, I'm still PO'd about the display and battery in my MBW-150 and SE's refusal to repair or even provide part numbers.
Just a toy
I brought it from ebay just for $20 bucks only. It is not a good practice since you will find at least 5 defectives after using it for 2 hours.
However, it is a good try and I believe a real smart watch is coming very soon later this year.
This thing is awesome! And sony just opened up dev. And a solar watch strap will keep it running forever.

[Q] Wearing the Moto 360 while driving is a pain

Please excuse this post, if something similar has already been created, I haven't found one yet. But has anyone noticed that wearing the Moto 360 while driving is a problem, especially at night? Maybe there is a setting that I don't know about that you can turn on, but the other night, I was driving home in the dark, and every little movement with my wrist, the screen would light up, it became quite distracting, I ended up having to take the watch off. Has this happened to anyone else? Have you found a way around this? Any solutions are welcome!

I drive with mine quite a bit and don't experience this. I believe if you turn Ambient Screen off in settings, the watch is less likely to light up with small movement. It takes more of a 'look at your watch' move to make it turn on.

Since day 1, I have had Ambient Screen off, I think it's more driving at night than during the day. I was wearing a t-shirt, so the watch wasn't covered, so I noticed the screen light up often enough that it was annoying and some what dangerous. I wish they would create a driving mode, or even a mode past the 2 they have now, where the screen only lights up for notifications or if you click the crown.
This is why I don't drive with 1 arm over the top of the wheel leaning to the side.
At 10 & 2 there isn't that much of the face turning on. But I do notice it occasionally. I adjusted my arm position to stop it though
I experience exactly what you are describing. It's very annoying and I think it's a huge drain on battery.

Same here. I now take off my watch while driving. I used to with a normal watch anyway. Microsoft sync on my car handles all my notifications and med is controls while I am driving anyway so the watch is redundant.
Glad to hear I'm not the only person who experiences this. It would be really great if they would incorporate more than 2 screen functions, like always off except for notifications. That would also help a ton with battery life for some people.
9 and 5 with a black watchface. No issues.
What I do is flip the watch over to my wrist. Helps a little.

NOW this thread makes sense
I noticed this myself right away my first day. It hasn't been distracting for me fortunately, Android Wear definitely needs a car mode.
Oh man, that is dangerous! I mean driving with bright light coming on your left side? Google needs to be notified of this. You should email Android blog site, like Android Central.

That is exactly how I drive.
It activates itself every now and then, mostly when turning. I don't really care though, at the end of the day, it impacts the battery by maybe 5%.

Can't tell if you're joking or not.. but driving at night with little street light (some freeways in the CA are like that) and have a full-blast white light coming suddenly is a distraction.
I had Llama on my Note 3 and configured it incorrectly and one time, it put the brightness at 100% (suppose to be 10% at night) and it's quite blinding when it happened suddenly at 75 Mph.
Of course, I don't have the watch yet (coming this week!), so I don't know how bright this is.
I just drove 1 hour on a road so twisty that it is impossible to go the posted 45 mph limit. At 4am, It's so dark you could see the milkyway clearly...my 360 turned on 3 times and two of them were when making 90 degree right hand turns. I wasn't bothered, but ymmv.

Yes and it is annoying. Everytime you turn the wheel it lights up. There doesn't appear to be a setting to change its behavior (though if you mute it at least notifications don't pop up at you).

Vibration motor issues?

Anyone having the same issues with the motor like in this review? It sounds terrible. I rely on haptic feedback for typing and if it sounds like this while typing or even getting phone calls that's going to suck.

I've been using two unit and both of them has crappy call notification as MKBHD review, but haptic feedback seems really normal.
Just verified on the two phones I have, no crazy vibrating broken-rattle sound.
The vibration even when just typing sounds pretty crappy on my razer and extremely off when compared to every other phone I've ever used. Other than that though the only complaint I have is the Android system seems to be using up way more battery than expected even when not doing anything like just over night it went from ~60% to around 40% just on standby.

I'm betting ya got a bad unit.

Yeah I have the latest update and it's like the haptic almost squeaks while typing. Ugh, I was hoping I wouldn't have to deal with sending it back if it just happened to be the norm.
Also are you using Bluetooth because I have it connected to my Moto 360 2 which might be the difference in battery life

Updated mine with the update and not the 2nd phone. Haptic feedback still operational but no noises other than the slight hum you hear with holding anything with a vibration mode. (normal)
Certainly don't hear anything that might be described as squeaks or rattles. :/
Don't sweat it though. If ya rma it they're pretty fair, though I wouldn't let them talk you into any extended responses to allow them passed the 15 day return window. I'm a firm believer that return windows should be 1-2 months. There's just no way to fully vet a piece of hardware in 15 days unless that's all you're doing. (but most people have a job to go to)
Also with the rma they pay for shipping. I myself though turned my rma into a return for the speaker crackle and am just going to buy it from amazon. It's here in the US already and prime allows for more. Assurant is offering extended warranties as well for 162$ and 99 deductible. (though I think Upsie is cheaper; not familiar with either experience in the event of a warranty claim unfortunately)
And I have not used enough bluetooth yet on the device to be a good response for ya. Sorry. Only connected to a headset and keyboard/mouse the other to test connectivity, so I've yet to discover how it does with lengthy connection sessions.
I passed on the feedback on the vibration pattern software tuning.
I'll see what we can do about it.
I wasn't the only person who thought haptic feedback sounded weird on my phone so I went ahead and sent an email to support. I guess we'll see how that goes.
Motor on mine sounds awful for calls or notifications (just like in the video). Haptic feedback for typing seems fine though.
Got my third phone and it's fine, no loud rattles or such.
Yeah they for sure have QC line issues. I bet some units didn't have the motor taped down.

screen always on huawei gt.

Hi,
i have huawei gt.
is the any way to put the screen always on and not only 5 minutes
No, that option It’s not available
then you’ll complain about battery life.
Isnt any hack to make this work? Thanks
Honestly an always on display on a watch is highly uneeded. you do not look at the screen ALL DAY. My Watch gets 12-14 days of battery and i absolutely love it. I have 0 issues with it compared to the Fossil/OG huawei watch i had. Wear OS needs alot of improvement. The huawei os could easily use improvements, especially in the notifications and the apps that send them, give spotify integration and ill be happy. A watch should be used as a breif notification tool not a phone imho
Thats Your opinion. I think have the choice to decide that os highly needed
I'll tell you why always on display is useful - I have amazfit pace with transreflective lcd - I can't count how many times per day I just do a quick look at the watch on the wrist of the hand e.g. lying on the desk while I'm working - without AoD I would have to lift up my hand and turn it with watch up or press the button with the other hand. Thanks but no.
Ok but i like this option. I just Im asking for that option. You dont understand what i am saying.
For the watch to be perfect, it just need to have an AOD mode and be open custom watch faces designing, it's silly they didn't implement those two from the beginning. What, instead of 12 days we got about a week's worth of battery? c'mon that's still best in class!!!

There're no other watches with same characteristics, this is the only watch to have this crazy battery life. I had the original huawei watch and having AOD with a custom watchface tuned for AOD having >95% of the screen in black, kind of like the watchface "GrayPlating", but without the seconds hand, it didn't really hurt battery life as much thanks to the screen being amoled, like the one in the Watch GT. So, I don't know what they are waiting for. Also, there should be an option to tune the sensitivity of wrist rise detection, because mine is lighting the screen with very casual movements all the time! and that's hurting battery life as much as having a AOD with a tuned watchface, so implementing that would get us AOD almost for free!

Firmware version 1.0.8.34 just installed, and they implemented some kind of AOD!!! it was a pretty obvious move. Basic AOD with just an option for a digial watchface, or an analog one. On the plus side I love the analog one, it's quite sleek and clean, I wish I could set it as a regular watchface too! if you set AOD the wrist movement to wake is disabled... instead that makes the screen go from the lowest brightness setting, to the pre-set amount -or auto-. They also added a double-tap on the screen to wake. Cool to see they are rolling stuff little by little.
They should really open watchfaces design via a phone/desktop app or some sort of converter from watchmaker. I would pay for that, it'd make this watch perfect.
This watch became usable now.
I will be curious how will it impact on the battery life. Hopefully not a lot.
What I've noticed though, after update and with AOD on raise to wake doesn't work I have to press the button. Is it meant to be like that?

Yeah, I guess the logic behind it was, if it's going to have an AOD watchface, and still wake up with random/casual wrist movements -false positives-, the impact on battery life would be even higher. You can double tap the screen to wake it up though.

Mine's going down at about 20% per day, with continuous heartbeat monitoring and TruSleep tracking on. I also do about 3-4hrs of exercise/week, so if it last for 5 days under this kind of usage it's all fine with me.
BTW it's also confirmed that they are going to publish an SDK for third-party development of watchfaces. Can't wait for that, hope it's full fledged, or even better, directly compatible with watchmaker's.
Someone can post a picture of the watch in this new AOD mode ?

Here you go, imho the digital one could do without the lines, and the numbers could be a bit thinner to reduce the number of pixels lit. Hope the upcoming sdk let us design AOD faces.

I think this will speak to your particular brand of crazy!

I'd sure hate to think about the radiation resulting from your phone, house, car, literally every piece of electronics, and oh yeah, the sun. Take off the tinfoil hat and enjoy the world, it's a lot more tolerable when you decide to stop being so paranoid.

You are probably right but I would still like to know if it would be possible to disable bluetooth
I don't understand why so many grown people can't answer a simple question? I have the same problem. I bought this watch to monitor my partners heart during the night because she has a condition.. But she sleeps very close to our 2 kids and we don't want them eating unnecessary radiation so we had to get another watch and the gt2 is
Rotting away in a drawer. Can anybody help in this thread?
Thanks

News regarding an appeal written to the WHO in 2015 picked up last week, noting the potential health risks associated with exposure to the radiation emitted from Bluetooth and wireless devices. Although some suspect chronic use of Bluetooth and wireless headphones could cause cancer, it’s still...

Again, if you're concerned with radiation from a watch, run in fear of the radiation from your phone that you keep next to your face at night. And next to your crotch during the day. And the sun, which pumps out more radiation than a piddly barely active bluetooth connection. Stop reading news for crazies.
Hi, phone is closed at night and I use a sun screan and I know, just checked last night with my phone there were other 5 blutooyhe sources around me and countless wifi's but that considered I still would love to know if there is anybody up the task here. Thanks for your interaction anyway..
So nobody is up to it? Let's wait for Huawei to wake up on this.

No, because you're literally the only one that wants this option. Why? Because it's asinine for all the reasons I've already given. Just use your watch the way it's meant to be used.
How do you close your phone at night? You shut it off? You toss it in a faraday cage? You have a flip phone for some ungodly reason?

I am not the only one. I need it because my partner owner of the watch has a heart condition that needs to be monitored. And because she is also breastfeeding 2 new-borns we wouldn't like to have them absorb radiations. So shutting off the device, throwing it in a faraday cage or throwing it out of the window wouldn't help would it? On radiations there is still a lot we don't know do not understand. And then, if you are not one of the people capable to help why do you even take the time to answer?

Because I'm genuinely curious. You say you want to stop your babies from absorbing radiation, but surely that can't mean from a bluetooth signal in a watch. BEcause that's quackery. To claim there's a lot we don't understand is also false. bluetooth "radiation" as you call it will not affect you, your partner, nor your babies. Don't drink the Kool Aid bro

Red pill blue pill dipends on what you want to believe. I have just read many of research on the subject and have picked on which side
To stand. We don't have WiFi at home, close the cell phones at night use sunscreen ect ect.. Maybe it's also just an instinct of trying to protect your kids don't know. What I do know that I like the watch. Would like to hold on to it put on the condition that I can find a good soul that can help me disable this feature. Please see 2 pieces of research that I have found there are miriads more out there. Regards man.
