Hey guys, since we don't have a recovery (other than factoy restore) what's my best option to go about wiping my dalvik cache & data??
Is it ok to just delete them using es file explorer then reboot? or what's the deal?

Why would you even go about that? I Googled your excact question and I found this link: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7541281/what-is-dalvik-and-dalvik-cache
Please read it thoroughly before deleting it.

Because i needed to clear out tons of useless .odex files after major debloat.
I read your link it didn't explain anything i didn't already know, thanks though.
I was asking what the best/optimal option to wipe dalvik on the LG G3 was since we have no recovery to do it. (so far just deleting it with es file explorer is what i did, although i'm not sure if it's as thorough as the recovery method on alot of other devices)
Only thing i can think off without recovery is switching from dalvik to art. That deletes dalvik cache for sure
please hit thanks if i helped in any way. send from my g3 d852 beast

I just rooted my phone yesterday and flashed warm z 2.2 rom and i want to flash a few of the add-ons. Do i just go into recovery and install from zip? Do i need to clear anything before i do this? this topic has been discussed before but im still unclear on exactly what i do. thanks.
You don't always need to wipe, but yeah, most stuff you flash in recovery. I usually wipe Cache and Dalvik before flashing anything, no matter what it is just to be safe. You shouldn't have to wipe anything other than that.
If you let me know the specific mods, I can double check for you.
Edit: Welcome! Excellent 1st ROM selection.
Yea im just trying to get the "recent apps in notification bar" and the "Hulu" add ons. thanks again for the help.
Yeah, you flash those, although I can't find the recent apps mod, I'm sure it is a flashable zip.
Also, someone the other day had trouble with the hulu zip. If you do, let me know and I can direct you to how to manually install Hulu.
ok im waiting on my battery to charge so i can flash the "recent apps in dropdown menu" add-on to my rom. Just to be 100% clear, i can just go into recovery and hit install from zip and choose the file? Is it best to clear the cache & dalvik cache before hand or does it matter? and if i do clear them will it erase any of my apps/files? Sorry, im really new to this stuff and im trying to learn as i go.

Its best to wipe the cache and dalvik before flashing anything in recovery. And it won't delete you apps, ect. Think of it like cleaning your internet cache on your browser. And yes, after the wipe, click install zip, and then choose zip. If you flash multiple things, wipe then flash again.
Ex: wipe cach/dalvik, flash thing one, go back, wipe cache/dalvik. flash thing 2, ect. Then reboot when done.
ok thanks a lot for the help.

I know I wasn't a part of this conversation but I used it to educate myself all the same, I would hit the thanks button if I could find it. Sorry, I'm new to this...
Are you using CWM to flash? I'm new to this as well and I don't think I'll be able to wipe cache without doing a full wipe with it.

You can use CWM Recovery to Flash. Or there are several other Recoveries out there. Amon_Ra v2.3 , or SmelkusMod.

i have been trying to change roms for the past week ! and they seem to flash but when done loading the rom changed but all my old apps and contacts are there nothing changed really but the name of the rom and boot screens ! ive formatted everything i could think of and still ending up w the same result can anyone help ? ive tried miui b4 the roms were not working.... and now im on mik roms working fine ! but i wanna try virtuous rom but cant !
i guess my question is what can i do to fix this problem ! ^^
thank you!
In CWM, did you clear dalvik, and factory reset/clear data?
Sent from my rooted MIUI Dinc2
i didnt try factory reset ill try that but could there be anyhting else ?
I don't think so. It should be a few slots down from install zip from SD card.
Sent from my rooted MIUI Dinc2
You need to factory reset in CWR. Also wipe data and cache.
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
Isn't that the same thing??
Sent from my rooted MIUI Dinc2
The reason for this is your not doing the "wipe data/facory reset" which will keep all your apps etc.
you should always wipe data/factory reset when switching between roms.
If your going from cm7 nightlie 80 to cm7 nightlie 81 then no you wouldnt need to do this.
I wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition (well i personally wipe them twice) when flashing roms.
hmm ok will try later on tonight ! thanks for the replies ! just to get it straight factory data reset then wipe data dalvik and cache ? and then switch rom ?

First make a backup of your current setup through Rom manager or Clockwork Recovery. Then wipe data, wipe cache, then wipe dalvick cached. Then install rom from sdcard and find file.
I check the md5sum of Roms on my computer also, to make sure they downloaded in their entirety and aren't corrupted. There is a md5 checker for pc on cnet and you can do it through terminal on Mac.
Please see OX's thread for more info.

once you have the ROM on your sd card (should check it when you have it on the sd card) you can use AFV to check the md5sum from your phone.

Hi
I was looking at some of these options on CWM and I was wondering if someone can explain what do these options do when click on them.
- Wipe dalvik cache?
- Fix permissions?
- Mount /efs or /data or /system etc
I especially see dalvik cache and fix permissions on the forums and always wanted to know what do those options do.
Thanks

The dalvik cache is where applications are expanded and compiled on the fly, dalvik is google's answer to java, clearing the cache , refreshes your applications in a way that could clear up any wrong information/data in the cache.
Fix permissions does just that , it fixes the file system permissions to what they are supposed to be, this can sometimes get messed up if you mess around in the shell, or manually install files or apps..
Mount , again does just what it says, these partitions are not mounted by default in recovery, they get mounted as needed if you flash a update file, but sometimes if you need to modify the file system while in recovery, via adb, you would need to mount them to have access to them ... Also sometimes, I don't know why, when installing a theme or other zip via CWM, sometimes, they need to be mounted properly to allow the update to modify the files.
Never realized to ask and just followed instructions. This cleared it up! Thanks!

can someone also explain the differences between stock, stable and latest (or custom) recovery? what does each of them do exactly?
specifically when you flash a custom rom and want to wipe data and cache, should you use stable or latest recovery, and why? what's the difference?
edit: oops, i'm in the wrong forum! if my questions don't make sense, please ignore. otherwise much appreciate for any answer.

Stock = What your phone came with from the manufacture (aka t-mobile)
Stable = Been thoroughly tested and is good for everyday usage
Latest = Updated bug fixes, designed for those who like to help devs oput and test/report back issues. Also for geeks who enjoy flashing such as I.
I'm sure many might have more to input but that is the basic run down.
Can someone please help. Running a rooted GS4 4.3. Made a backup with Rom Manager. was trying some zips to try and get WALLET with tap and pay working, well no go. so I did a full wipe, then booted into recovery and restored the back up I had. Now everything just force closes, making the phone pretty much unusable. There is no Fix Permissions in RM 6.0.2.2 to see if that will help. can someone please help!!!
Thank you

Try this, before you restore the nandroid backup in cwm recovery wipe data, system, cache, dalvik cache
and last but not least do a "factory reset".
Once that's done go a head and restore the nandroid backup in cwm recovery.
There is a very good chance it will work just fine after doing that.
Good luck!

Ok so now in CWM Touch i cannot see my backup. I can see it when I'm in Rom Manager though. I did make a copy of the backup via Rom Manager server and saved it to my computer. How do I restore this back to my phone so CWM can see it.
This really sucks. I can not figure out how to get my backup into the secure section /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup. I tried to manually put it there using Root Explorer, but that doesnt work.. Really need help here.

From the short search that I did, it appears the restore function is only available with the Premium version.

I have the Premium. It is only one way it looks like. It makes a Zip file, which from my research, is a flashable zip. However i try to flash it and it fails;

I think you have to flash it through your CWM recovery. Try to boot into recovery and hit install.Seems there's a backup and restore function through Rom Manager.
You may want to reflash your kernel too, just for the heck of it.

Hi there, apologies if this is a silly question. I'm not an expert by any means, just a guy who follows the directions given on helpful sites like this.
I recently flashed the Slimkat ROM onto my n7100 for various reasons. But when I did, I obviously didn't completely wipe everything (which is what I intended).
Because for example, I installed a couple games on there and found that my game-saves were still there, also there were some bits on the obb folder from apps that I had on my phone previously but haven't installed since flashing the new ROM.
Why is this? Did I maybe miss a step when flashing the ROM? I know I did the 'wipe and restore factory settings' part in CWM, but I'm not 100% if I did the part with wiping the dalvik and cache etc.
Would that be the reason?
And If I want to give my phone a completely clean wipe what's the best way to do that now? Would I have to go through the steps as if I were flashing the ROM all over again? Or could I just go into recovery mode and wipe the dalvik, cache, system, data etc and reboot?
P.S. Yes, I know that no one who gives advice is responsible if I brick my phone.

Just a follow up - I did a wipe + factory reset, wiped cache partition, wiped davlik cache, and was surprised to find I still had leftovers on my phone. For example I had some episodes of a tv show in my downloads folder and also there was still app leftovers in the obb folder. Meh... I'll just delete stuff manually.

Well, you will have to flash stock recovery then. after that, wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache. This will erase everything on internal SD card. I assume u have backed up EFS and other important stuff.
press thumbs up if u find this suggestion helpful.

By the way, I sort of overlooked the obvious - in the end I just did a factory wipe and reset from inside Slimkat i.e. not via recovery mode.
And that did the job fine. Cleaned up several gigs worth of clutter which apps like SD Maid seemed to have skipped over as well.
