[Q] Lost sound after applying modem.bin and NON-HLOS.bin - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I apologize that this is a common topic, I've searched quite a bit and although this comes up a lot, I don't quite know the best way forward with it.
I've been running Fenny's 4.4.2 on my TMO S4, but had stability issues. Since 4.4.4 was released, I tried out http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...stock-base-4-4-4-nh7-rooted-deodexed-t2873695 this ROM but had the wifi/radio issue not working. Sound was working however. I flashed the modem.bin and NON-HLOS.bin from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55373341&postcount=22 and gained radio + wifi, but lost sound.
Is there a basic modem I can flash to reset it and fix the sound?
Thanks,
Aaron

Iirc new LTE modem (NONHLOS.bin) will only work with the new boot loader. If you don't want to upgrade boot loader then flash the LTE modem (NONHLOS.bin) for your current boot loader.

That did the trick, found a non-hlos.bin for the original 4.4.2 firmware on my phone and it's working great. Thanks!

Is there any rationale for why the LTE radio has to pair with the boot loader version but the gsm radio is easily upgradable? I'm curious why they aren't both easily portable.

I was wondering about that myself, if it had to do with the difference between how the LTE radio code is bootstrapped versus a more portable gsm code?
Right now I'm trying to figure out how to update my bootloader to 4.4 to try and see why my wifi won't enable.

If you update the boot loader there's no going back. Aboot.mbn, sbl1.mbn, sbl2.mbn and sbl3.mbn are the boot loader files to be flashed in Odin.

Understand about not going back, I went ahead and reflashed stock 4.4.4 to get it back working again. Since this is my primary/only phone, I'll have to hold off on doing anything more non-standard for a while.
Thanks!

Can you provide a link to the non-hlos.bin for 4.4.2 firmware? I did the same thing and lost audio.

Just found the link that worked for me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544612
I followed the instructions there and regained audio, then flashed ONLY modem.bin for the new NH7 and did NOT flash the non-hlos like a dummy, ha!
(Bonus that I got 10 posts and can now posts these in the appropriate threads!)

I wonder if the new GSM modem gives any tangible benefit over the NB4 one...
I've also wondered if a "better" GSM modem helps at all with LTE, given the LTE modem is part of the boot loader...

the phone does not boot, and i do not have root. I have not tried flashing the modem through recovery as i dont have a custom recovery on there or a modem.zip
Update - so i was able to get the phone to boot up, installed root and TWRP, installed the note 2 modem but still baseband unknown. From i can understand so far is that its a Tmobile note2, my idiot friend tried to flash the n7100 SW on it, now its showing unknown baseband/IMEI. Is there a fix for this?

[Q] problem

hi,
I had a t-mobile phone from the netherlands... I flashed the XXUAME2 stock firmware over it and now my wifi and phone app don't work.
wifi just wont turn on... if I press it... it doesn't lit... it is immediatly turned off again... and if I want to call someone or someone tries to call me... the phone app crashes... black screen... can't do anything for 2 minutes...then the phone starts to flip.
is it because of the firmware? should I try flashing a t-mobile firmware for the netherlands?
HEEEELP PLS been this way for 2 days...
thanks!!
I would definitely flash the firmware for your region. Firmware includes the modem and you need the correct one for where you are.

You need to flash the stock modem/radio image file for the wifi and cellular phone to work again.
Here is the link for the CWM/TWRP or ODIN flashable modem/radio which will give you all the
information and download links for the i9500/i9505 modem/radio flashable files:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025
Just follow the step by step instructions in the link above and make sure you get the proper file for your phone.

You need to find out your phone's model #, if you have the i9500, i9505 or the M919 handset.
Which ever handset you have you need to flash the same model's modem/radio image.
You flash the one which matches and is intended for your phones model #.
If your phone is a Samsung galaxy s4 i9505 then you need the modem/radio file for i9505/
Good luck!

You do not need the entire firmware from sammobile, all you need is the modem image and flash it.
If you flash the entire sammobile firmware you will have to re root the phone..............

The reason the baseband says XXUAME2 is because you flashed a different firmware ontop of the stock
firmware which came with the phone.........
Again, follow instructions in link below and flash only the modem/radio image for your phone's model #.
(TMOBILE/BELGIUM are NOT a model numbers.)
model numbers are 9500/9505/M919 and so on....... download/flash the proper one for your phone.

[ROM][STOCK] Rogers/Bell/Telus [TW 4.3/MK5/ROOTED] KNOX/NO-KNOX - 12/05/13

Disclaimer
I am not responsible for any bricks, dead SD cards, house fires or girlfriends leaving you while flashing these. Flash at your own risk
I am not a DEV, im a simple man trying to learn how to compile and modify ROMS, this is my first official release of something! Be gentle! There shouldn't be any issues with these, there's not much that needed to be done, only time consuming! Enjoy!
For PURE UNROOTED STOCK ODIN images go here. Thanks @HiKsFiles
All the roms are zipaligned and deodexed.
ROGERS OFFICIAL STOCK ROOTED
TouchWiz 4.3 I747MVLUEMK5
Untouched with KNOX / DEODEX
This is untouched, pure stock with KNOX, besides being rooted, this is as stock as stock can be.
Untouched without KNOX / DEODEX
This is pure stock but with KNOX removed, everything else in intact.
BELL OFFICIAL STOCK ROOTED
TouchWiz 4.3 I747MVLUEMK5
Seems to be an issue with both Bells versions. I had issues when i uploaded. I will recompile to be sure and re-upload soon. If you can't wait, i would suggest a Telus version (has no bloat) just need to add your APN settings to enable data.
TELUS OFFICIAL STOCK ROOTED
TouchWiz 4.3 I747MVLUEMK5
Untouched with KNOX / DEODEX

Untouched without KNOX / DEODEX
This is pure stock but with KNOX removed, everything else in intact.
Installation:
You can install the new Bootloader IF YOU WANT. IT'S OPTIONAL. - Thank you -Mr. X-
If you decide to install it, please be aware that you will NOT be able to downgrade to 4.1.x bootloader. If you need to know if a file is safe to flash please refer to post #3 by @loserskater
Backup your data
Factory reset (Highly recommended)
Flash zip of your choice via recovery
Install new modem MK5 (if you haven't all ready)
Install this Kernel (only if you are having Wifi and Data issues. Will be sorted out, this kernel is a temporary fix) Thanks @scotteb
Clear cache
Reboot (First boot takes 4-5mins)
Enjoy
Concerning bloat, i think it's a personal decision. XDA member Kaito95 made a nice script which is editable here if you wish to remove bloat yourself.
Thanks to Kaito95 for KNOX removal and debloater script, dsixda for his Android Kitchen and -Mr. X- for Bootloader.

I feel like there's a lot of confusion about the new bootloaders. So let me try to clear some of it up.
You CAN flash 4.1.2 roms but NOT 4.1.x bootloaders.
If you're unsure that a rom contains bootloaders or a modem here's how to check, download the rom and look in the zip file. What you should look for are any of the following files:
Code:
aboot.mbn
sbl1.mbn
sbl2.mbn
sbl3.mbn
rpm.mbn
tz.mbn
NON-HLOS.bin
modem.bin
If the zip contains any of those files DO NOT flash it.
If it contains just these:
Code:
boot.img
system
META-INF
(There may be other folders if the rom uses aroma)
it is OK to flash.

I tried the same file as above and wifi wouldn't turn on during the intro startup.
Also. On 1st boot it said my external sd card was corrupted. I rebooted and when I went to mount the SD card it said it was blank.
I rebooted into recovery and my external sd card was fine and all my files were present.
So I refreshed my 4.4 quantum rest 2 build and will run again if another version is posted.
Lastly, I did bot upgrade my bootloader. I'm still on the 4.1.2 bootloader.

I used the Telus version and had no wifi until I flashed the kernel
kriEv, I had gallery force closes on the Bell version, switched to Telus just to see if the problem still exists. The result was, no force closes on the gallery and wifi was working fine, but i never had wifi problems on either build. The only thing I had to do was to set SElinux enforcing, to permissive. No other problems thus far.
Wi-Fi also not working, data not working either (Bell version)

I'll try the kernel a few posts ahead as well. Both my data and my wifi would not work after installing the Bell version rooted with KNOX and updating the modem supplied.
May be some sort of issue with the upload Bell version, or the modem file itself may be corrupted.
Many thanks for putting these up though!:good:

download the telus version and flash that, I am guessing your with bell as you stated you were using the bell version. I am currently using the one I said as there is no customization by the carrier. I did have to add the APN to get data (just so you know) You can also use the kernel that is included if you have no other problems, you may also have to switch SElinux to permissive depending on your root requirements. Or, flash the other kernel in my previous post and save the trouble.

Is the "Mobile hotspot" and "data" on the Notification panel (when you swipe your finger from the top of the phone) ???
Or is it the same as the Tmobile version, Mobile hotspot is on a separate app in the app drawer, and mobile data can only be accessed under settings menu?

Or is it the same as the Tmobile version, Mobile hotspot is on a separate app in the app drawer, and mobile data can only be accessed under settings menu?
Thanks

thanks.. will try it later
everything seemed to work, but after flashing the Modem.bin And NON-HLOS.bin I no longer have any sound. Anyone else having a similar issue? I think it was really the non-hlos.bin that screwed things up. Any way to undo what it did? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The nonhlos.bin version must match the bootloader version. For example, if you have the NB7 bootloader, you need to have the NB7 nonhlos.bin. Flash the proper nonhlos.bin.

Thanks for the reply. How can I find out what bootloader I have? I pretty much had rooted my MetroPCS S4 shortly after I bought it back in July of 2013. It was still using Jelly bean 4.2.2. with older firmware M919NUVUAMF2. I hope that info helps. Would I need to find a different nonhlos.bin file or update/upgrade my bootloader? I'm really SOL right now cuz I can't make phone calls. At least I can still recieve texts. Thanks again for any help?

July of 2013 means your warranty is up so tripping knox would be no issue. I'd completely update with the firmware then you can not worry about stupid mix match problems

One last question. I just download the huge M919NUVUFNI3_M919NTMBFNI3_M919NUVUFNI3_HOME.tar.md5 stock firmware file. In which slot do I put that in? I'm using Odin 3.09. The slots are labled: PIT, BL, AP, CP and CSC. Thanks again.

AP. Uncheck auto reboot, flash it, when done pull battery, back to download mode and flash it again and reboot. Just to be 100. Sometimes bootloader and/or modems have a issue writing to the device.

Edit: Looks like you're flashing the firmware...good choice.
If you've never flashed a different firmware then you would need the nonhlos.bin from the MF2 firmware. You can find that firmware at this link, under firmware...
http://androidforums.com/metropcs-g...cial-metropcs-s4-root-information-thread.html
Alternately you could just flash the new NI3 firmware like shiny suggested. It would be easier altogether. Your manufacturer warranty has expired so updating the bootloader is no longer an issue.

The firmware? No. Mobile odin doesn't flash bootloaders.
Modems should be able to yet I've never used it

FOH3 Modem.bin files for MDL and non MDL bootloaders

UPDATE: https://mega.nz/#!G0sUgLYQ!FLkCzuu_9MjGXuxQAZ3sGIZEGVTZLsy48v92NSZiaWQ
^^^Modem & Non-Hlos in a zip file. Extract and flash what you need.^^^
Non-Hlos <<<(need to be on [OH3] MATCHING Bootloader!)
FOR MDL BOOTLOADER FLASH ONLY THE MODEM.BIN (NOT NON-HLOS)
Everythings working, sound, calling, LTE, Wifi etc.
Steps I took in case anyone needs it: have latest samsung drivers, open odin (I used 3.04). Untick auto reboot, POWER OFF PHONE dont use reboot menu because files wont always flash correctly. Hold power + vol down to boot to download, make sure it shows up in odin. Click PDA navigate to modem.bin (if its not showing up enter ** into file name field and hit enter....poof its there) now flash it and wait until you see success. Unplug phone, Close/Reopen ODIN, Hold power to shut down, boot to download and repeat modem flash to make sure it sticks.
Make sure you have a backup of rom and current/older modem in case you want to switch it back or what not. Not a dev, just wanted to help out and give back to the community.
Thanks @shiamatsu for this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544612 , no clue if sound would still be effected by non-hlos.bin on MDL
Thanks @dirkdigles for the heads up on non-hlos.bin.
(Quoted link in post #37 is for OK3 not OH3)

Yeah I'm on NK2 bootloader and NK2 modem. So I guess I'd need both as you say.
Thanks!

Mine were just stuff that should have been put in OP, so I moved it.
While this allows one to update to the latest baseband, does it address the stagefright fix or is the entire firmware flash needed?
Thanks,

The entire firmware is needed. But it's a moot point if you're running a custom ROM; once you reflash your custom ROM, you're at risk if your devices dev hasn't patched the ROM.

It might be better or its just a placebo effect, mine seems more stable. Really need to try it in your area for yourself and see, too many different configs for this phone to be sure for everyone.
I was able to flash the modem.bin just fine. However, I'm on the NK2 bootloader, and I can't get the non-hlos.bin file to work. I've used Odin 3.04, 3.07 and 3.09, and I get a Pass message every time. According to the Phone info app, I'm still on The NK2 bootloader. I used the phone slot for the non-hlos.bin file. Has anyone else had this problem?

Its probably easier for EVERYONE not on MDL to just update with odin official firmware, then odin TWRP or whatever recovery and restore the backup you should've made. No need to re-root or what not. This post was mainly for MDL.

You can't flash non-hlos.bin on a bootloader that doesn't match. You gotta take the original TAR and do something like this guy did

What is the most recent bootloader? I upgraded to the knox one already and was using NB4 non-hlos and modem.
I tested out the FOH3 non-hlos and modem and so far it seems to be working with whatever bootloader I have.
