[Q] Making the leap, rooting my Galaxy Tab S - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy Tab S 10.5. I've done a little research on the web and am thinking of rooting my Tab S using the Odin/CF Autoroot method. My primary reasons for wanting to root are:
1. Samsung keeps reinstalling stuff that I remove. Namely New York Times and something else that I can't remember (blame alcohol).
2. For some strange reason I cannot drag and drop files (my comics and books for example) to my external SD card. I'm still trying to figure out what that 64 GB can possibly be good for if I can't install apps or drop my music/files onto it.
Even with the bit of research that I've done I have some lingering questions that hopefully some kind soul can maybe answer. These are:
1. As towelroot doesn't seem to work on my device, is there any other method for rooting that won't trip knox (Kango seemed a little untrustworthy to me)?
2. After rooting will I be able to get firmware/software upgrades through Samsung or will I need to find these elsewhere?
3. I pretty consistently see that "Samsung drivers" are suggested to have before rooting. I'm a little confused by this reference what does it mean?
4. Samsung pushes it's screen clarity/resolution as something called "adobe rgb". Is this something I'll need to replace or will I lose picture clarity?
Thanks for all the great work you guys do and thanks in advance for any help!

1. As of now no way to root without tripping Knox
2. You will need to unroot to get ota's. Stock recovery is also a must for ota
3. I just installed kies then made sure it's not running while doing rooting process
4. You will not lose picture quality.
The only con I can see to rooting is tripping Knox. That external SD issue is the very thing that made me pull the trigger on rooting. the super Samsung rom has some great added features and fixes the SD card issue if you want to flash a rom I would recommend that one it's great. Good luck

Thanks for the fast reply. Just a few more quick questions:
1. I couldn't find what OTA stood for (well I saw about 30 things). Where would I find a stock recovery or will one be created during the rooting process.
2. So before I start this madness I should install KIES and then kill the process before I begin?
Once again I really appreciate the quick response.

I can copy files from the internal memory to SD card with my unrooted device. You don't have to use third party app to copy.

Right but try getting a third party app to write to the SD card like es file explorer or whatever. Only option is my files app

Ota is over the air update. If you are just planning on rooting and staying on the stock rom you don't need to mess with the recovery but if you plan on flashing roms or kernels or anything you will need a custom recovery.

Okay so I downloaded Odin 3.07, Kies, CF Autoroot, and CWM. I've seen several people mention "drivers" for the Samsung but the only driver I can seem to find is a USB driver which I installed from the Samsung website. To start the process I fire up Odin, click on PDA and select the CF Autoroot file. At this point the device is NOT plugged in. I turn the power completely off, then back on while holding down PWR + VOLUME DOWN + HOME BUTTON. I let go of these button once I see the Samsung Galaxy Tab S (powered by android) logo. It flashes something a little too quick to see with the green Android guy standing up, then I get a screen where he's laying down with an exclamation mark coming from the hatch in his stomach. At the top left of the screen it says:
Android system recovery <3e>
KOT49H. T800XXU1ANFB
Volume up/down to move hightlight;
power button to select.
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
etc...etc...etc...
Bottom left it says:
#MANUAL MODE#
At this point I plug the Galaxy back into the PC but neither the PC nor Odin see it.
At some point I'm supposed to press VOLUME UP but no matter when I seem to press it after holding down PWR +VOLUME DOWN + HOME BUTTON I always get to the above screen. Any ideas?

OK that is recovery you need to be in download mode. When the tab is off hold volume down, home, and power til you see a screen warning you of using a custom os . It will say press volume up to continue or down to cancel. Press volume down thenYou should see a picture of a green android and underneath it, it should say downloading now do not turn off target after hitting that screen open Odin then plug it in you should see a yellow Com port pop up on Odin.

Turns out you have to be smarter than a third grader, which I apparently am not. In portrait mode holding volume to the LEFT is volume down, while RIGHT is volume up. Finished and rooted. Thanks for the great help!

If you want to go further and install a custom recovery the easiest way is to install twrp manager and follow the instructions and it flashes it for you

Mind if i ask you a question while your here.. on my note 3 i didn't use any program to root. I used odin to install twrp and than used twrp to flash supersu than installed the supersu program. .. can rooting be done via this method on the tab s 10.5?

To be honest I'm not real sure, this is the first Samsung I have owned since the captivate, so it's been awhile lol, I have been using lg devices for awhile...n4, g2, g3, and my tab was an hp TouchPad running android til I finally upgraded to this.

THIS THREAD IS INTENDED TO USE ONLY FOR THE SGH-S730m, AND NOT FOR ANY OTHER PHONE. I CANNOT CONFIRM THAT IT WILL WORK ON ANY OTHER SGH-S730 VARIANTS, SO USE THIS THREAD AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DATA LOSS, OR BRICKING THAT IS A RESULT FROM YOU CHOOSING TO ROOT. HOWEVER, IF YOU SOFT BRICK YOUR PHONE, IT CAN BE FIXED VIA CLOCKWORK RECOVERY (TO BE POSTED SOON)
WARNING ABOUT USING ODIN: IF YOU ARE A NOOB, ONLY CLICK ON THE BUTTONS I TELL YOU TO CLICK, AND NOTHING ELSE. I ACCIDENTALLY SOFT BRICKED MY PHONE BECAUSE I HIT THE WRONG BUTTON WHILE USING ODIN.
AND LASTLY, ROOTING WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.
What you will need to do this:
What you will need before you start:
A computer with a internet connection, and running Microsoft Windows XP or higher, with at least one working USB hub.
A Samsung Galaxy Discover - SGH-S730m

Rooting the SGH-S730m
1. Download and install UnlockRoot Free on your PC (here if you like to procrastinate). YOU DO NOT HAVE TO INSTALL BLOATWARE!!! PLEASE READ SETUP INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!!
2. Download and Install Samsung USB Drivers (here as well). If it prompts you to reboot for any reason, then reboot your Computer.
3. After all of this is over, you have to prepare yourself for the hardest part of this whole process, and maybe the most complicated dilemma you will ever face in the entirety of your lives.
4. Turn on your phone if it isn't already. Wait for the phone to fully boot.
5. Plug your phone into the computer via USB.
6. Run UnlockRoot on your computer and click the "Root" Button (when it prompts you to install bloatware apps on your device, say no).
DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE UNTIL UnlockRoot SAYS IT IS OK TO DO SO!!!!
Congratulations, you have should now have a rooted SGH-730m in proximity to your hands!
DIAGNOSTICS:
If by any reason, you feel unsure as to if your phone is actually rooted or not:
Install a root checking app.
These apps will tell you if your phone has root access or not.
Try Root Checker from the Google Play Store.
Install a terminal emulation app.
In these apps, type the command "su" (without quotes). If you get "permission denied" you have not rooted your device. If it prompts you for root privileges (ie a popup appears) then your device is rooted!
Try Terminal Emulator from the Google Play Store.
If you are a n00b (like me occasionally), and you fail to understand why something works, or, the exact opposite: Don't worry! You probably thought the auxiliary headphone jack was the USB port, or, thought you should unplug your phone early, despite me warning you not to do that. That's okay, you can get it fixed.
If you somehow managed to soft brick your phone, or, it boots to a black screen, then you can also continue to the next step.
Installing Clockwork Mod Recovery
This is when things start to get scary. If you are a beginner Odin person, then you must follow these steps very carefully, or you might brick your phone.
1. Download the Odin Flashing Application. All you need to do is extract the folder inside of the zip and place it onto your desktop.
2. Right click on the .exe file inside of the odin folder and select “Run as Administrator”
3. Now that odin is running:
4. CLICK ON THE PDA BUTTON
5. When the file window appears, browse to the desktop directory (your desktop) and select recovery.tar.md5
6. Press Start.
DO NOT DISCONNECT, UNPLUG, PLAY WITH ANY BUTTONS, OR CLICK ANYTHING ON EITHER THE PHONE OR COMPUTER UNTIL ODIN HAS FINISHED FLASHING CLOCKWORK RECOVERY ON YOUR PHONE.
7. To boot into recovery, just turn of the phone and press the upper volume button.
That should be IT!
A TriangleAway patch (a way to get rid of the yellow triangle that might appear on boot) post will follow eventually!
Please post any mistakes (or broken links) of this OP below. I will try to fix the instructions accordingly. I am not always online, but it may appear that I am. Please post questions, or corrections on this thread.

I just bought a unlocked Galaxy Discover, so wanted to say thank you for helping get root on it.
has anyone started working on a new rom for it, or a way to overclock the cpu a bit to help make it perform a little better, 800 MHz is a tad on the slow side but usable, if we can get it bumped up to at least 1 GHz that would be a big improvement.

I bought mine unlocked from Amazon, and I've seen them for sale on ebay also.
I have seen sites that claim to be able to unlock the Galaxy Discover S730M so you should be able to get a unlock code for it.
I finally had a chance to try this out, was able to root with no problems thanks OP. MY only remaining annoyance with the stock rom is the lock screen. I'd like to replace the swipe to unlock screen that Samsung used on this with the stock ICS unlock screen. Can you recommend any that would work with CWM if flashed to the s730M?

6. Now shutdown your phone. Boot into odin download mode by turning the phone (release the power button as the phone vibrates) and holding the lower volume button and home key. Follow the instructions (press the upper volume button) to continue with download mode.
7. Inside of odin, press the "Start" button.
DO NOT DISCONNECT, UNPLUG, PLAY WITH ANY BUTTONS, OR CLICK ANYTHING ON EITHER THE PHONE OR COMPUTER UNTIL ODIN HAS FINISHED FLASHING CLOCKWORK RECOVERY ON YOUR PHONE.
8. To boot into clockwork recovery, hold down the upper volume and power key until the first vibration, then just hold the volume key.
That should be IT!
How to recover from a soft brick
YOU MUST HAVE A MICRO SD CARD WITH AT LEAST 500 MB OF FREE STORAGE SPACE TO DO THIS!
To reduce confusion, please remove any backups that you may already have (which would be funny, you wouldnt have to do this anyways).
1. Download the rooted stock CWM Recovery Image (.zip) I made from here, to your device (preferably a computer).
2. Extract ALL of the contents of the zip file to the root directory of your micro SD Card. The folder should be named "clockworkrecovery".
3. Remove the SD card from the remote device, and turn off the SGH-S730m.
4. Remove the back plating from the phone, and insert the micro SD card into the phone.
5. After putting the phone back together, boot into recovery by holding down the upper volume and power key until the first vibration, then just hold the volume key.
6. Using the volume keys as scrolling keys, scroll down using the lower volume until you see "backup and restore". Touch the menu item.
7. Touch the "restore" option.
8. If you extracted the zip file the exact way I told you to: you should see a menu option. If you didn't do what I told you to, you may see "No files found". If it says "cant mound /sd" (or something similar), you probably have a bad SD Card, or, forgot to put it in correctly.
9. Click on the menu item.
WAIT FOR THE PHONE TO BE 100% DONE RESTORING YOUR BACKUP TO THE PHONE! YOU COULD HARD BRICK THE PHONE (BECAUSE CWM RECOVERY WRITES TO THE BOOTLOADER). DO NOT TURN OFF THE PHONE, THE PHONE IS NOT FROZEN IF IT WONT RESPOND FOR A WHILE.
10. If you did this correctly, you should have a rooted, restored SGH-S730m!
A Triangle Away Tutorial will come soon!

Unless we have custom ROM devs for this device: there is no way to actually remove the samsung lockscreen.
Does anyone know what system apk handles the lockscreen? It probably requires some deox work on some system files.
If you are looking for an app, try Holo Locker from Google Play Store. I use it for both the 730M and I777. It can glitch though, but it works!

Bricked my wifes phone trying to get it to work on Koodo for picture messageing. Luckily I was able to use ODIN to load Clockwork loader and load your backup. It is back to a telus phone but for the first time since we switched to Koodo I was able to send a text from the Galaxy discover.
When I built a new APN for Koodo it showed up at the top and Telus was second. This was previously Telus at the top even though I had the Koodo enabled not the Telus it would not send a picture.
Now the funny thing is my LG optimus won't send a picture and I have changed nothing. Koodo is driving me nuts. and it's a short trip. http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Latest in the Telus moving to Koodo Saga. Both the LG P500 and the Samsung SGH S730M do not send MMS. I loaded ICS on the LG from Oxygen and can now send MMS from the LG. Carrier shows as Telus. Does anybody know what settings might be changed to make this phone a KOODO phone or think it's a KOODO phone. Or even a plain google phone. Thanks:fingers-crossed:

Are you referring to the customer sales code?
It is embedded everywhere in the Android operating system.
Commonly known as the CSC.
I will post as many locations of the csc code as I can find.
As a note, if you install Holo Launcher from Google play, you can add "activities" to your homescreen, giving you access to hidden apps that require dial pad access.
One activity is called "preconfig". DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL OTHER CERTIFICATES: IT WILL RESET YOUR PHONE AND THE CSC WILL REMAIN THE SAME: TLS.
I will try to help. I wish I knew more about this phone's structure.

Cant factory reset my note 3

Hello, I just got my note 3 the other day and I just love it. I just want to be able to get the most out of it that I can. I decided I wanted to root it and put a custom rom on it. I wanted to put the rom wicked because it just looks amazing. Anyways I tried following this tutorial /watch?v=A6qt8sSTKYI (cant post full link) The last step where I had to hold the home, power, and volume up I messed up a bit. I am not sure if it is because I didn't hold them down long enough or what but it didn't work. So when I got back to my phones setting I wanted to factory reset it to start from scratch. When I tried this the phones powers off and then when it powers back on I am stuck in odin mode. The ONLY way I was able to get out of it was taking out the battery for a few secs. Put the battery back in, held down the down volume, home, and power button. Then when that menu came up it said press up to continue or down to cancel or reset. If I pressed up I would be stuck in the odin mode again. When I pressed down the phone then booted fine which was a big relief.
I am just wondering what I did wrong. I really would like to factory restore it before attempting the root again. Maybe this time I can have someone help me on skype? If you are willing to help me that would be wonderful. I will PM you my skype and it will be just through text no voice.
Thank you in advance
I'm just guessing but perhaps you need to just go ahead and flash stock firmware through Odin. Your files or partitions may have got messed up somehow. Its pretty simple. Goto dev section and read up on it. Gonahead and download the files and research while downloading so less wait time.

Yes, flashing anything will get the ticker to 0x1.(although I heard from some people, you CAN reset it, but it's not solid yet)
Now as far as getting to RECOVERY, it's volume UP, home and power, not down. down is download mode, up is recovery. Hope it helps.

also, in order to start anything on a brand new device that not rooted yet, you have to install the root BY going through odin, at that point you should google root note 3 and go to the website(which i cant access im at work) is rootgalaxynote3.com. he has the files you need and tutorials to root, AT THAT POINT install goo manager and install recovery, which you need root access to do. when thats done, you can get into TWRP recovery by holding down in this sequence: volume UP,home, power(always hold down power last to make sure it recognizes you holding down the other two buttons) at that point youre all set to flash!

I'm just guessing but perhaps you need to just go ahead and flash stock firmware through Odin. Your files or partitions may have got messed up somehow. Its pretty simple. Goto dev section and read up on it. Gonahead and download the files and research while downloading so less wait time.

I tried both volume down and up.
Or goto dev section and download files needed for sm-900t then move on to goo.manager.

Yeah that's good. Let us know what happens. That will stock your phone to out of the box. THEN Odin install the root.
Well, That seems to have worked very nicely
After I did what I said above I was able to factory reset without a problem. NOW, before I go ahead and screw up again what procedures should I take exactly? I was having problems when in the videos they where saying clockworkmod. I had the rom manager and then it wanted me to pick a recovery or something and I was confused. Any tips?
Goto the twrp thread and DL 2.6.3.7. Flash that and start flashing.

I am in GooManager and when I click install openrecoveryscript it says "No recoveries were found for your device"
I really have no idea what to do now. Does this mean I am stuck until a recovery is found for my device?
Did you download and install twrp from the team win project website?

P605 stuck at recovery booting...need help

So I just tried to flash 4.4 on my P605 (file being P605XXUCNE2_P605OXACNE2_NEE.zip).
Sadly, I forgot to tick 'phone bootloader update' in Odin, soooo....now I'm stuck on the Samsung logo with 'Recovery booting' written in blue on the top left edge.
I've searched the Net for a solution, but all the ones I've found require me to remove my battery, which is kinda impossible on the P605 without hardware modifications.
I really need some help here, as I'm sure there is another way to get to Download Mode.

Flash stock JB rom,let it reboot then Flash Kitkat rom after... Flash TWRP 2.7.0.1 and let reboot, go into recovery, now should be TWRP, flash latest supersu.zip file(1.99r3). Now Kitkat, rooted and custom recovery.
If you don't want root and TWRP, skip those steps...
Just be aware you will have difficulty accessing external sd card with any but stock file manager and not all 3rd party apps will be allowed to use it (unless rooted)...

The problem I'm currently facing is that I can't get to d/l mode, recovery or w/e. It's just stuck in a bootloop...
Thanks for the reply, tho.

I had the same problem, just hold down power and down vol and get to into download mode so you can tick that bootloader update and it will work.
Took me a few goes to get it to go there... but it did work for me.. Hope that helps
I also found the flash jig for the S2 works to get to download mode...
Don't know what I mean, here's a youtube video demonstrating, just forget the bit with the battery, you just need to insert and power down - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8yqWf6JU3o
Worth around $3 on ebay... Look for S2 usb jig...

You must do it at the right moment between screen cycles. Took me 1 minute, but for some people here on forum it took 30.

What does a screen cycle mean exactly? Sorry if the question is dumb.
Edit: Just got into d/l mode.
I did that by holding Vol- and power. It restarted a couple of times but in the end it got there. Thanks for all the help.
Try Power + Volume Down + Home instead of just Power + Volume Down, there is a different if you are stuck.

New to Samsung and the note brand

Hey guys in the many years I've been into android I've never owned a Samsung and never owned a note. ...so here's my question. ...
I'm used to having to unlock the bootloader to do any custom rom flashing....I've been scouring these note 4 threads (all variants) and can't seem to find anything pertaining to unlocking the bootloader...so I'm wondering if anyone could drop a few lines or a link to help me understand the process of rooting/unlocking bootloader/recovery/flashing for the note 4....my apologies if this has already been covered or if is a dumb question but I'd like to have all the info i can before doing any modding to my phone

Assuming you have the Sprint variant, and the drivers, for your computer, download the latest version of Odin, the latest TWRP, and Chainfire's SuperSu zip. Place the SuperSu zip on you phone's storage (either internal, or external micro sd). Place the TWRP tar file, in the "PDA" or "AP" slot (depends on version of Odin), uncheck auto reboot. Power phone off, and boot into download mode (hold volume down, and the physical home button, and press the power button. You should get a warning about custom operating systems- press volume up. Connect phone to computer, if everything is set up correctly, you should see a "com" number appear near the upper left of the Odin program. Uncheck "auto reboot", press start- process should go very quickly. Once it completes, hold the volume up, and the home button. Without releasing, the other buttons, press and hold the power button, until the phone reboots. If the phone doesn't reboot, and you're certain TWRP flashed, without errors. Pull the battery. Again hold volume up, and home, and press power. As the phone powers on, you should see the recovery booting text, at which point, you can release the buttons. Flash Chainfire's SuperSu zip, in TWRP, if you want root.
tldr: Odin TWRP, flash SuperSu in TWRP

Sprint TWRP Recovery - http://www.techerrata.com/file/twrp2/trltespr/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-trltespr.img.tar
1. Flash CF-Auto-Root
Reboot
2. Flash TWRP Recovery
Reboot
3. Rejoice!
Both of the above linked files are installed through Odin.
I used Odin included in the CF-Auto-Root zipfile for both flashes. Be sure to only flash through the PDA button in Odin, and nothing else.

Revert Tab S 8.4 to stock kitkat

I just got a Tab S 8.4 used on ebay.
I like the tab but lots of apps I use are not lollipop compatible even when side loaded.
I want to revert this Tab S 8.4 from lollipop to the stock samsung kitkat. (32gb Titanium, USA,. wifi only version)
I just found this link with instructions:
http://samsung-firmware.org/download/Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (WiFi)/5432/XAR/T700XXU1ANL2/T700XAR1ANL2/
Can I just download that and follow the instructions to get back to kitkat without any issue or tripping knox?
thanks.
Use this link: https://mega.nz/#!AYsCFaiY!aOJs57p3EV0HYzDYUxkE0QTgfW2ztCTzUYhtBKhhTZM
That is my own personal upload to Mega. It will probably be a faster download and I know it's safe.
Steps:
1. Place tablet in download mode (Turn tablet off, press and hold POWER, HOME, and VOLUME DOWN until you come to a warning screen. Click VOLUME UP to continue to download mode.)
2. Download zip file
3. Extract the file
4. Open Odin
5. Select AP
6. Select the file you just extracted
7. Click start
I've used these steps without issue. As far as KNOX is concerned, it is my understanding that flashing a custom ROM is what trips it and not stock firmware. I could be wrong on the KNOX issues.
thanks! it is a slow download.... yours is much quicker.
Any particular version of Odin to download? (3.10.6 work? or Samsung Odin 3.09?)
so installing this OVER the lollipop stock firmware I have...very little chance of bricking following the instructions if all goes well right?
I'm not new to flashing just want to make sure as I have heard someone say a samsung rep said you can't downgrade
Thanks very much!
I'm surprised at what you say, I haven't had a single issue with any app being incompatible with lollipop.
These must be pretty outdated apps.
3 of note:
simply note: you can't access it's menu system. (yes it is old, but it works the way I like just fine in kitkat)
xfinity tv go: no audio, freezes, crashes
Both Go Launcher HD & EX do weird things...unuseable.
The latest versions can't be setup the way I prefer and had on previous tablet or phone running kitkat.
all 3 run perfect in kitkat
Now granted all but the xfinity are old, but they work/config the way I want them to be.
I'd rather just have it the way I want then compromise if it all possible.

Version 3.10.6 is the version I use so you should be fine there. I have the same model as you, but mine is 16GB instead of 32. I seriously doubt that would make any difference. Yes, flashing over Lollipop is what I did. Ran into no issues whatsoever!
ok I did that and now it just boots to the samsung logo then holds there.
Tried turning off, won't do it.
held down vol power and home and it goes back into download mode.
I tried to flash again it does it successfully and reboots (just like first time) and it just freezes at samsung boot logo.
before that comes up it does show the green droid for a moment.
any ideas?

Boot into recovery mode and restore factory defaults. That should get you through the Samsung logo. Turn device off, hold POWER + VOLUME UP + HOME, select factory reset
ok i'm in setup now (like a new device)
thanks!

Yea, I was freaking out when I first did that. I figured at that point it wouldn't hurt to give everything else a try. Enjoy your KitKat! I noticed that the colors seems to be more vivid with KitKat than Lollipop as well. That's one reason I went back.
Hi...can i have the link again?
TQ.
