[Q] Bricked HTC One M8 - No OS Installed - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there - i am completely new to this so please excuse my ignorance. I rooted my phone and due to some Apps not working that I really needed, I tried to unroot to get back to where I was to start with.
I have now found myself in the awful position of my device having no OS installed and no matter what threads I have followed, I cannot get any ROM to install.
What I have is:
Unlocked Bootloader
TWRP installed
S-On
HBOOT 3.16.0.0000
I think I have the right ROM for my device (Vodap001) and i have tried using sideloading and ADB push but none of these work.
Can anyone please help me to get back to a stock ROM

Did you try to sideload a full ROM, or a backup? Asking as backups can't be installed using sideload. If tried to sideload a full ROM, what exactly happened?
You could just sideload any full sense ROM, the place the TWRP Backup for you version into the TWRP Backup folder on your phone and run a restore.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I tried to sideload a stock nandroid backup from one of the links. Is this not correct?
Sorry- quite new to this!
Where would I find a full ROM from?

Hi exocetdj
I've followed these instructions but I get a 'failed' message.
Here is the string:
E:Unable to open zip file.
Error flashing zip '/external_sd/TWRP/Backups/rom.zip'
Updating partition details...
Does this mean the zip file is corrupt or something?
I have taken this from one of the Stock nandroid backups here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376

Put it in root directory of external sd card.
That apart, I saw that some .zip files doesn't open properly at all but keeps on throwing errors even if you try to open it on a PC. If you have 7zip try and extract the .zip file and use 7zip to make it a .zip file again.
On a side note, are you trying to flash a backup again instead of a ROM? Just because you download a backup and rename it ROM.zip doesn't make it a ROM anymore than taking a baseball bat and naming it a soccer ball makes it a "soccer ball"
Download any stock ROM from Android Development ROM Repository. You could also just download a custom ROM quickly, flash the ROM. When that's done go into recovery and restore the nandroid backup for your device.

Zip file is not corrupted ... the way you do it totally wrong.
Stock nandroid backup is NOT a ROM.zip
See this on how to use a nandroid backup in proper way (replace the numbers with the one that you downloaded) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55316046&postcount=1894

If you just wiped the system partition you can got into TWRP, choose Restore and using this menu restore your OS that you have backed up and on your internal storage.

Hi, I'm still not having any luck with trying to get an OS back on my HTC One M8.
I've followed the advice and done the following:
1. I have extracted a nandroid stock backup, put this into the TWRP\backup folder and attempted to restore this from TWRP. This appears to do everything, i get no errors and looks great until I swipe to reboot and i get the mesage stating No OS Installed. Am I wrong in thinking this shoudl restore the OS?
2. I have downloaded ViperOneM8_2.4.0 and put this zip file in the root of my SD Card. I have then used the Install menu in TWRP, selected the .zip file and I still get the message E:Unable to open zip file. I have checked using 7Z and the file appears in tact and not corrupt.
can someone give me an idiots guide of how to get out of this mess I have created?
Thanks

[Q] How to restore backup nandroid upload as zip from Clockworkmod?

Hi,
Yesterday I made a new nandroid backup and uploaded it using clockworkmod, which created an zip file, my problem is, how upload it to android to restore again using clockworkmod?
Thanks in advanced
There should be an option to restore and let you choose the backup under "Backup and Restore" in recovery.

You made a nandroid while in custom recovery right ? The confusing part is you say then you uploaded it . If its on your phone then it should be in your clockworkmod backup directory .

The problem was, I made an nandroid backup and uploaded it to my computer, and to save space deleted from my GNex. I installed a new rom (4.4) and because I didn't like it wanted to return to my backup. I couldn't find a way to upload it to my GNex using Rom Manager/Clockworkmod Recovery, then I tried to copy to "sdcard" then to /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup, but using root explorer applications I couldn't, finally I used an terminal application to move/copy using comand lines as su/sudo (can't remember which), after this I finally restore the backup.
What's strange is, with Rom Manager I can upload the backup to my computer using http://192.168.43.1:4000, has an zip file, but to restore from my computer to GNex there isnt any option, either to extract the folder with date and time to the correct folder, in this case /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup.
that sound like u already wipe data partition.. just make any fake flash zip to mount up the partition.
then restore the recovery from your sd (if any)..
or can push that recovery data...
1. using correct path - /data/media/0/twrp/backup/folder_name.. or any ( can found this path in nandroid recovery log)

[Q] Problems and confusion with TWRP

I'm running twrp 2.7.1 and have quite a few problems but I'll just start out with the backup and restore options.
The tutorials I've reviewed instructs to simple backup your stock rom and to reinstall, choose the file and restore.
Why isn't the wipe and factory restore procedure performed?
I followed the instructions and attempted to restore the latest backup but when I hit reboot I get the no OS installed warning, this is without any wipe. I doubled check the checksum of this backup for accuracy.
If I choose the earliest file from the restore list, I get no OS warning and am able to reboot back to the "older" flash of the stock rom. I actually performed the same procedure after a failed install of a custom rom with wipe. Got the OS warning after loading the latest backup but no warning with the oldest.
This only scratches my problem but I'd like to address and hopefully fix this first.
Thanks for any suggestions.
If the nandroid was made with a different version of twrp, maybe try reflashing that version and try again.
Alternatively, you could just flash whatever rom is backed up, then try to only restore the data portion.

Just tried your suggestion choosing latest backup and restoring data only. Now after the splash screen it wants to setup language, email etc. again.
What I meant was flash whatever rom it was that you were trying to restore. If its the sane rom in another backup that's fine though. Did the data restore pass the md5 check?
You can try again, but afterwards go to twrps advanced menu and copy log to SD. It may provide some clue as to what's wrong. Attach it here if you want me to take a look.

Well I'm starting to think twrp is corrupt.
I tried to load the ndroid backup I made yesterday but the log showed it was done in 8 seconds. I attempted to flash back to the original image I made 2 months ago which I have been successful doing..I thought everything was flashing when I noticed the screen is now says...
Could not do normal boot.
ODIN MODE

CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD:Yes (3 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Custom STATUS: Custom

It's been stuck on this screen for a while.
Sounds like something got corrupted, or you need to try with a different recovery. Either way its in download mode for flashing with Odin.

Have you tried using Philz Touch? I was using TWRP but ran into problems flashing ROMs. I switch to Philz and the problems went away.
Unfortunately, Philz can't restore TWRP nandroid backups.
Could I please get some advice on what to do next?
Okay, I was able to pull the battery and boot into twrp, restore the old stock rom and safely reboot but this is one of many problems.
I haven't been successful installing any roms. I've downloaded Liquid Smooth, Gummy, Carbon and Slim 4.4.4 versions and encounter the following error message.............E: Unable to open zip file
Error flashing zip / external_sd / custom rom / "file name"
I'm using a 64 gb card but am not sure how it's formatted. I've created files with the roms in the internal card but twrp doesn't see it.
I've read tutorials and researched some of the blogs and I assure you that I'm not doing anything haphazard but the amount of problems I'm having is absurd.
the only thing i can think of (and hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in) is if in twrp settings see if 'md5 check ' is checked. if it is then uncheck it and try to flash again. srry thats all i got right now. (or bad idea doc ?)
good luck.
err on the side of kindness
Try flashing from internal SD. Don't know why but its worked for a couple other people so far. If it still doesn't work, please use the copy log to SD option and attach it here.

I suggest Philz Touch as a substitute for TWRP. I was having problems with TWRP until I switched to Philz.
I noted that I tried to flash from the internal card but twrp could't find the folder I created.
Twrp still didn't see the files after i moved them out of the folder and placed them among the other folders.

Open a file explorer like es file explorer..create a new folder and put the ROM zip in the external SD..I had to do that and I use cwm
I created files with Astro file manager but twrp still doesn't see them on the internal card just the external but won't open the zips.
I'm just not getting much feedback on my problem. Will posting on a different forum help?
If the external sd is formatted as exFat, recovery may not be able to read it correctly. Since its a 64gb card, I bet this is the problem.
Have you gone into the mounts menu and remounted your internal sd and/or /data? Maybe its just not mounted...
You might also want to try twrp 2.6.3.1 or 2.8.0.1. You can get them from the link in my sig.
Or try philz recovery as suggested before.

TWRP: No partitions selected for restore

Hi!
i kinda messed up my phone a little after trying to upgrade my firmware. I must have flashed the wrong one.
Fortunately i can get into the bootloader, recovery and even start a custom rom.
Unfortunately some things are broken there:
-BT not working
-cant install any apps from store
-some other things
now i tried to reset my phone to complete stock using a nandroid backup from the forum
i dragged it on my phone, twrp sees it and when i try to install it i cant choose the partitions to restore.
When i swipe it i get the Error:
E: no partitions selected for restore
i made a nandroid backup of my broken rom and i can flash this without any problems
maybe im trying to use the wrong nandroid? i tried several but i always get that message. What came to my mind is that there are some files missing in the nandroid backups i downloaded. its about all the 0byte .tar files. Are these interchangeable so i can just try to use copy the ones i have to the nandroid backup i want to install?
Can someone please tell me which nandroid backup i should get?
CID: VODAP102
version bootloader: 3.16.0.000
version baseband: 1.16.2133156.VA15G
S-ON
i only get empty text when using: fastboot getvar version-main
Please help me!!

The bootloader 3.16 indicates your phone is on 1.12 or 1.54 software
any of these should work for VODAP102

where are you putting the extradited files ?
they go in TWRP/BACKUPS/YourSerialnumber/nandroidyoudownloaded
in TWRP you can chang where it looks for the backup by simply click the word internel storage xxxxxmb or external sd xxxxxmb or usb_otg xxxxxmb
just choose where you put the nandroid you downloaded
Hi,

Hi Guys,
I found this thread and post my problem here cause I have the exact same problem.
I made an backup with the "online nandroid backup" app ant want to restore it with TWRP.
I put the folder in TWRP\backups\myserial\ and it is available in the restore menu in TWRP. But when I try to use it the message is shown!
What can I do? Do I have to flash CWM to use my backup?

After selected the desired backup folder to restore, did you actually "check" the boxes for the partitions (Boot, System, Data) you want to restore (before you do Swipe to Restore)?
there is actually no box like this or i just look in the wrong place. To do restore i go to bootloader then recovery, restore and i just select the backup folder i dont know where schould i check that boxes.

YOU my friend are an absolulte BEEEEEEEEAUTY!!!!
Everywhere that I checked other than here, simply stated that the backup file had to be in the BACKUP folder.
After two days of failure with multiple attempts to install different roms for my S4 (I know, wrong thread) I resorted to the 'Restore' option. I was losing my mind until I found this post of yours. That 'YourSerialNumber' step is crucial.
MUCH respect.

Easy and useful trick, is to use TWRP to make a backup. For instance, go into TWRP, select Backup, check Boot partition only (assuming your device has that - I don't know much about the S4), which is probably just 10-20 Mb.
TWRP will construct the proper folder structure to save the Boot backup. You can then copy the downloaded nandroid to the same location.
You can put several backup folders in twrp:\backups\myserial\backup1, backup2
But remember (no sub-folders)
**backup1 and backup2 are two different backups. You can also rename folders for your ease but you can't rename (myserial folder) otherwise it will disappear.

Useful info. I personally like to rename the backup folders (after TWRP generates the backup) with details about the ROM, date, etc. such as: "Stock Rooted Magisk (2-2-18)".
I know TWRP auto creates a file name, with the date and time of when the backup is made. But I still like to change the date format to something that is easier for me to understand. Plus some details on what exactly the backup contains (rooted or not, stock or custom ROM, etc.).

Sure.
TWRP -> BACKUP -> choose BOOT only -> execute
now check where the image was saved eg: ext: /TWRP/BACUPS/XXXXXXXXXX/DATA.../files
now delete what is in the XXXXXXXXXX folder and move your folders there from the path / TWRP / BACKUPS / YYYYYYYYYYY /
this is because it was re-uploaded TWRP and now have a different backup path (folder XXXXXXXXXX)

easiest solution is to restore from some one else his backup. It won't be fully stock since you still have TWRP recovery.
You can download a backup from here and here. I recommend b635 but it is your choice.
First make a full backup of your phone. Boot in twrp go to backup and swipe to backup.
Then in twrp mount your phone as usb.
Exract the downloaded .zip file. Then put that downloaded folder on sd card. Not the entire folder, but just the last folder.
Should look like this on your sd card: twrp>BACKUPS>022JBW7N3A017892(can be different folder name)>name of downloaded folder>11 different .win and .md5 files
then in twrp choose restore and select the one you want to restore to. One is your cm11 backup (you made yourself) and the other is the downloaded backup
Sorry if it is not clear enough. If you still have problems please tell me. :good:
Thanks its clear, my biggest problem was. which restore version download

Not able to restore nandroid back up

Hi there,
I was running a RR rom and got a msg about an update for my ROM. So i thought i would try it out. I made a full nandroid back up and after that updated my ROM. After the update my homebutton didnt work anymore. So i thought, lets just restore my back up again. I did a fully factory wipe, i flashed TWRP again on my OP3 because for some reason after the factory wipe i got the Cynogen recovery mode. So i put back TWRP, put my back up on my phone from my laptop, but when i went to "restore" nothing was there. I tried to move my back up from the "sdcard" directory to the root directory but i got an error which didnt specify what the problem was.
Can any1 help me restore my OP3 again?
so when u went to TWRP -> Restore, there was not backup found to restore? but when u check ur phone through file manager its there?

Thats correct. When i go in the file manager, i see the backup in the sdcard directory along side the TWRP directory. I tried to move it with the file manager, but it gave me an error which was not specefied.

ok now i extracted all the files from the tar files, but what is the next step? I tried putting them on my OP3, but that does nothing. My OP3 still doesnt see a back up.
Another thing is something i saw is that in TWRP, when i shut down my OP3, TWRP says that there is no OS installed. Is that normal?
No that is not normal, the extraction is there so u can reinstall things, I will have to take a look at it again, do u know what all partitions u had backed up and did u move the backup location?
Lately backup in twrp recovery sucks.
Yesterday, i want to test another rom. So i wipe cache/dalvik & backup in twrp. I select all except rom img (3gb) and cache (zero). Try the new rom. Does not work for me. So wipe all except sd card & restore my backup.
Error..
I use only twrp 3.0.4.1, so it can not be a conflict in different twrp's versions. It's not the first time....
If you wipe youre phone, including sd card, go to recovery, backup and choose the smallest size file to backup. Recovery creates youre backup folder in TWRP directory. After that you can erase the that backup.
I flashed back oxygen (OMG I forgot how ugly oxygen was) last version, so I got a working phone again but ofc without all my media. I just find it weird that I make a full backup (I had everything checked) and I can't do anything with it.
I did full factory reset, so maybe that's the reason my OS got deleted aswell. What partition has the OS installed?
When I reboot my OP3, I get a msg saying that dm-verity has not started in enforcingmode and may not work properly. What does that mean?
