First off, a real big thanks/"you the man!" etc. to Cyanogen for CM 7. Finally took the plunge and rooted my phone, warranty be damned. Let's just say I had an older Aria (which had already been rooted) as my training wheels, and it certainly was nice, but nowhere near as nice as the DZ/Vision.
So let me get my specs out of the way:
Baseband Version: 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2 (I gather the bold part is what we refer to as the radio version).
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.28-cyanogenmod-g4free2e [email protected] #1
Using CM 7.0.3
Now in running Speed Test, I'm getting about, ranging from .45 Mbps, going as high as 1.60 Mbps in terms of download with upload being only slightly behind, sometimes being even. Now the results don't make sense, and I know I've gotten significantly higher in my area, and browsing does seem slower many times latesly.
So should I change my radio (again)? I had changed it (probably shouldn't have) thinking I could get more consistent mobile Internet connections, but I guess I've kind of screwed up. Any suggestions from fellow AT&T users?
I'm in the same boat, about to get my Desire Z. Not a ton of AT&T users for the Vision so I wasn't sure whether a different radio would benefit or not...
I've gotten up to 5 Mbps down on the stock radio. But obviously, this is going to be dependent on your local network (whether or not the HSPA+ backhaul has been performed, and network congestion). It would be ideal if you could compare data transfer rates with another AT&T customer in your immediate area, preferably on an Android device.
Only time I've switched radios, was when I tried Virtuous, and used the radio that is recommended for that ROM. Did not notice any change in data speed.
I assume you have the Canada Bell version of the Vision. In that case, you never had a warranty. HTC states in their terms that any phone purchased outside of the country it is intended to be sold in, is not warrantied.
I am on 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.18_M3 CM7
I get 1~1.5 MB/s Down and <1 MB/s during peak hours. At 3am in the morning i get 3-4mb/s Down and 1.35 mb/s up. This is from an Suburban area too...
Once I get into the SF City CBD area during 8am hours i get 300kb down lol. And all my data no longer work.
Also I have an iphone 4. It makes no difference when i switch the sims. Same data speed.
I used to use RUU_Vision_Hutch_AUS_1.85.861.3 when i had issues with 3g dropping to edge all the time.

Really? No warranty, eh? Well I'm going to have to look at those terms again. Not like it matters now anyhow.
Sadly, most of the AT&T users I know are iPhone users; however, there are a few I know I could ask.
Yes I have the Canada Bell version of the Vision; however, I don't remember the stock version of the radio, so I'll have to do some digging unless the stock radio is what's in your sig. If that's not the stock radio, well, I can always try it.
Anybody else (particularly in New England/Northeast USA)?
Thanks again!
I should have an unlocked Bell Desire Z in my hands in the next few days. I'll do some testing and see what results I get.

Thanks! Keep us posted, cause I'm sure there are several of us here on AT&T. I plan on testing next week.
Kk, so finally got the phone unlocked/working. I ran a few tests from a few different places and got the best result to be 2.4Mbps down and 1.1Mbps up. I'm not really sure if those are hspa+ speeds or not and don't have my friend's atrix here to compare at the moment. I'm also no sure but he was telling me that if I want hspa+ speeds at&t needs to activate something for me. Can anyone confirm? Or at least tell me a way to be sure of what I'm currently on?

Stock radio is: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.18_M3
Where in New England? I'm in the Boston area. Data speeds vary greatly depending on exact location. I get good speeds at work (Burlington, MA), often 3-5 Mbps down (but sometimes dipping to 1-2 Mbps). While at my house in Waltham, its abyssmal, with speeds often around 0.5 Mbps down, or even less. Luckily, I'm always on WiFi at home.
Does your phone say H+ or just H?

I think it always says 'H'. Just tested at 4.11 Mbps down, and it says 'H'.
I'm in California, in the greater Sacramento area. I have a Desire Z NAM that I've been using on ATT since about last November.
I don't believe the backhaul overhauls have been done in our area yet as I haven't seen an increase in data speeds lately.
During the day, I average downloads of 1.5-2.5mbps and uploads of 1-1.5mbps. Of course during off peak hours, those numbers go up a little bit but not drastic. When heading into the bay area, specifically into San Francisco they tank hard, to the point where I'm better off switching to EDGE...
I am still running CM 6.1 with radio 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
My GF has a Dell Streak on ATT and she gets comparable speeds to my DZ. Haven't tested it for exact numbers but I don't feel a significant difference when using her browser against mine.
Haven't done any tinkering with Radios either, perhaps a project for summer when I get some vacation time...

Haven't had much time to test as the company move has me working massive amounts of overtime (hey, at least the paycheck is huge).
I live in Connecticut; right outside the Greater Hartford area. I plan on moving back to the stock radio to see if anything gets better, so we'll see.
Granted I plan on being in NYC this weekend, so testing may not happen seeing as how AT&T's service is like rhino poop in the area.
(Yes, rhino poop).
I'm on stock radio and I have zero service in my basement. Service was never that great down here, but I always got one to two bars. Can anyone point me to radios to work specifically for AT&T Desire Z users or does it make a difference if we use those other ones (like T-mobile)? I've seen the thread with all the radios, but I am clueless as to which ones I should try.
Hello all!
Noob here, first post, so first and foremost please pardon any ignorance. I did search here as well as google without finding any significant results. I appreciate anyone who takes time to answer.
I recently bought an unlocked Galaxy S2x (989D) for use here in the USA on T-Mobile. I went with the 989D and not the 989 because I'm using a grandfathered T-Zones plan.
I rooted/flashed Juggernaut 5.0 through cwm, and the phone is working fine EXCEPT my download/upload speeds are lousy. Consistently 1.5Mbps down / 500Kbps Up MAX with 800-1200 ms ping via speedtest app from various parts of Maryland (Baltimore/DC corridor) and using different servers. My N1 has always tested faster than that in the same area, which is why I'm particularly concerned.
I tried flashing Telus KJ3, T-Mo KID and T-Mo KL1 modems found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426001
But saw no improvement. I've also tried using the stock epc.t-mobile and the old internet2.voicestream APNs, with equally crappy results on both.
Is it just a matter of T-Mo having terrible speed over HSPA in this area, or is it possible that there's something screwy going on with the device/rom/kernel/radio? FWIW, calls and texts are fine, and wifi calling works as well. I've attached a few screenshots in case any of them might be helpful.
TIA!
hmm... you should read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514954
there's no spoon
highest speed i ever got was close to 10 Mbps in Canada 3G/3.5G networks
seems more like the area you live in, have poor Tmo coverage for data
That's disappointing, to say the least, especially since according to the coverage map, I'm smack in the middle of a giant blob of "4G Excellent" coverage. I'm still confused as to why my Nexus One would have better speedtest results. Perhaps HTC/Google FTW.
seriously???
Is this legit? Full 4G signal? I can't imagine how it's THIS slow. Does jugg 5.0 have any build.prop tweaks that could be farking with my data? Just threw my sim card into my N1 to compare and it's way faster.
@JoshD422, Did you ever figure this out?
[Q] Whats the difference between each of the radios?

I am also wondering about this same fact with a real Telus phone in Canada. I'm also wondering about the difference between the 3 radios that were provided with the Darkside.UCLE2 Beta 5 ROM. (Don't get me wrong, appreciate all the hard work from these guys, amazing where the T989 dev has come already!)
I tried all 3 radios, and get different speeds with each one. Blazes 4G radio I can't seem to tether, and then the T-mo radios I'm having issues with Bluetooth and even Data.
Could someone if you have a minute explain what the difference is between the radios and maybe suggest what radio would be best for us Telus users in Canada?
Cheers, TIA!
Drew

JoshD422,
I will be the first to tell you living in Toronto, that its completely unpredictable in Canada.
I've had areas if there is high use downtown I will get even worse results than that (seen a ping of over 1000ms ).
At the same time I can redo a speedtest about 200 metres away, and get results up in the 10 Mbps and pings of 45 ms. So I don't believe that part has to do with the radios but more the quality of service, and I'm in whats supposed to have the best service city in Canada.
Your problem definitely seems to be due to the T-Zones plan. I don't have that plan and I'm using an unlocked stock Telus T989D in Maryland and I get 2-4 Mbps down and 0.7-1.0 Mbps up

Do you get the "4G" icon?
I am on a stock unlocked T989d in the Atlanta area and get similar speed to you. However, I only see the "3G" icon in my phone.

Yes, only "3g" icon in MD/DC area. I guess maybe perhaps this is not as fast as using the T-Mobile radio software that comes stock in the T989, but it's plenty fast for me. I don't think the "4g" capability is much faster, anyway.

I think the "4g" icon is purely cosmetic. I have an unlocked Telus T989d on Tmobile and my co-worker has the Tmobile T989 on Tmobile. We both did a Speedtest side to side and we both got ~12Mbps down, ~1.3Mbps up. My phone was showing the 3g icon, while his was showing the 4g icon. Both our networks showed up as HSPA. Both of us in our respective stock, un-rooted ROMs.
While T-Mo roms do tend to be a bit over zelus with the 4G icon, it is much faster than a 3G connection. Where I live in Orlando is a 4G area and I get over 20mbs download speeds and over 2mbps upload speeds..
Side note though.. it is funny that people still use "" or call it 3.5G when the T-Mobile network has been accepted as 4G for almost a year now .. I tried to find the artical but its being illusive today..

Officially, 4G is supposed to get 1000mbs peak download. Tmobile uses HSPA+ which peaks at ~80mbs. I think that is why people call it 3.5G or use the "4G" when talking Tmobile.
I'm not sure if it's coincidence but when I first replaced my Nexus 5 with the M8 last week, the LTE speeds on my M8 were much slower; I'm talking borderline 2G/3G when 4G is indicated. This wasn't the case everywhere but around the areas I usually use my device, I noticed the M8 was generally considerably slower than my Nexus 5.
Then I got S-Off and flashed the GPE RUU, changed the CID and technically have a fully functioning GPE. My speed tests since have been better than my Nexus 5. Highest I've seen on that was maybe 25Mbps down, 20Mbps up. On the GPE M8 on T-Mobile, I've often seen 50Mbps, 20Mbps up.
Has T-Mobile possibly improved service in the NYC area the past few days or is it a combination of different hardware/software? Perhaps the radio?

I'd be guessing, but I would think that it's either just an early radio for the sense version isn't performing up to par for some reason in your area, or they have been working on the network and have improved things, and in the process made them worse for a little while (why you saw a drop from your nexus to the m8).
Thanks. Same things I thought. Twice the download speed of my Nexus 5 seems a bit odd though.
Hi all, I recently just upgraded from the HTC Rezound to the One M8. Overall I like the phone but as far as signal strength goes, it seems like a downgrade from the Rezound. My phone is stock and has the latest updates. I even did a factory reset after the last one. I troubleshooted with tech support and they recommended I return the phone. I went to Verizon the other day and got a new SIM card. The sales person told me that the Rezound's back case was pretty much one giant antenna and that's why my M8 seems like it doesn't get as good of service. I'm used to 3-4 bars of 4G inside my house now I get 1-3 bars of 3G with the occasional 1-2 bars of 4G inside. Is there anything I can do to improve this or is this just how it's going to be?
Unfortunately, the only thing I can recommend for you is to mess around with the APN settings, which should be just fine since it was sold straight from Verizon. Some phones get better reception than others. In my experience, my unlocked M8 is getting MUCH better reception than my G2, but I'm on AT&T.
The number of bars don't mean anything. Literally, there is no standard to what they symbolize. And while you would think that HTC has kept it (what the number of bars symbolizes) somewhat constant between the 2 phones, there is no guarantee of that. Much better to look at Settings>About>Network, and look at Signal Strength in dBm. The larger the value, the better the signal. Keeping in mind the value is negative, so a "larger" value actually means a smaller absolute value (drop the negative). -80s to -90s is decent signal. -110s is call-dropping bad.
Assuming you really do have poorer signal on the M8, if you are not on the latest software version, you might update (as updates typically include new radio software) but the difference will probably be minor at best. Or you can s-off and try an older radio. But it might mess up other things to do so (and again, I wouldn't expect a huge improvement, if any). And you can only flash a Verizon radio (GSM radios are not compatible with the Verizon version). Plus these types of mods void your warranty, and I'm not sure you want to go there or not.
Just making sure that band 12 works on the unlocked HTC 10 on T-Mobile. I know in the past many phones didn't have support for it right away.
Yes. Was on B12 all weekend while camping.
Yes works. Wi-Fi calling is also working. Yahoo

In in the Seattle area and not getting the speeds I expected on LTE. I purchased the HTC10 directly, and accepted the OTA. Am currently on 1.53.617.5 with radio/baseband [email protected]_45.00_F. Max speeds achieved have been ~27M down and 7.5M up. I expected to have much better speeds than this - some are getting over 150M down on other devices.
Tried *#*#4636#*#* and selected GSM/WCDMA/LTE but still no better speeds. Curious what others are getting and if they are on same radio image.
Thanks!

Did others receive those speeds on the same tower and at the same time? If you are comparing tests done on different towers, or even just minutes apart the speeds can vary wildly.

Those are, in general, pretty good speeds. People only ever post the rare glam speed tests, but it's not like that's what people always get. Any given day, in a city, sharing a tower with a bunch of people, 27/7.5 is pretty good and excessively usable.
Where I am at the 10 is on par with other devices I have.
All the devices here give me between 65-75 with the occasional 85-90.

I'm getting 5mbps D and 2mbps U where I'm at on ATT in LA this exact second.
It's not the phone, as mentioned it's the network and capacity/load at that time of day.
I've had 25mbps D connections but it's just not consistent depending on location and load.

I work in the Seattle area frequently and a lot has to do with time of day, location, etc. You have a lot of high tech people in a very small area and while T-Mobile does better than everyone else there some times of day and areas in Seattle are just horrible.
Much of the problem is due to jurisdictions putting a lot of restrictions on new site construction as well as site upgrades...
Thanks everyone - I was downtown Redmond today and got much better speeds - around 75 down and 25 up. I'll try by Factoria in Bellevue next week - that's where they test the latest radios in this area and it typically has the fastest speeds.
When holding phone normally to talk, anyone had issues with other person not able to hear when phone switches to band 12? For the past couple of days I am trying to test my new unlocked HTC 10. I was in the mall (Bellevue Square), made a call and phone was on Band 4, then while walking, phone keeps switching from 4 to Band 12 and that is when people just can't hear me, but when phone goes back to band 4, then all is normal again.
Like everyone said, it does work. It did throw me for a loop when I started looking for it (when I first got the phone). As it turns out, TMobile lies about their coverage map Maybe lie is a strong word. They likely put future coverage on the map as if it was already covered. I had the misfortune of picking such an area.

I don't know if you were replying to my last comment? I know that phone supports Band 12 and does connect to it. I am more concerned about mic not working when phone is switching to Band 12 in the middle of a phone call. I re-tested many times and result is the same. Note 5 on other hand, works just fine.
