Converting to GPe. Firewater fail - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I'm convert ing my AT&T M8 to GPe since I'm used to using my nexus tablet so much. This is my first shot at custom ROMs with android but I used to be big into the homebrew scene in the good old PSP days, so I'm not a stranger to modifying devices past their potential lol.
I've flashed my custom recovery and have installed supersu to the device, however.0, after running firewater, it fails and says firewater can't work with the device. It stops after "chugging first bottle"
I even installed Insertcoin rom because it says to do it with a rom with an insecure kernel for better results and it still fails.
- on a side note, while I have insertcoin installed in the meantime, does anyone know why after I flashed the rom my boot time is a few minutes long now? Seems strange to me.
Anyways, any help/comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

HTC patched the exploit Firewater used, doesn't work anymore. Can try Sunshine S-OFF
[Android][HTC S-OFF] SunShine for modern HTC devices
It's $25 , though it works and even in the event that it "might" not work. Your device gets tested to make sure it'll work before you have to pay the money, so if it passes you can pay, if it won't succeed you won't need to pay $25 for something that won't work...

Ah fiddlesticks! No way around that, huh? Well I guess I can learn to live with Sense. Does anybody recommend any other roms that don't need s-off other than the Insertcoin one I'm running now? I can learn to live with it but it does take roughly 5 minutes to boot, which is kind of a pain. Just wondering. Thanks.

the long boot time is due to out of date firmware look in the development section on updating firmware with S-On

You can run GPE edition ROMS on your device. Check out SkyDragon GPE or SinlessGPE

No problem Keep me posted on what you like or dislike. I've been running SkyDragon since I got my HTC and would like to try that since I am itching to flash something.
Don't forget to check out Gravity Box for KK on he Xposed modules.

definitely will check it out once I get into the rom a bit.
One more quick, possibly stupid question (I'm sorry to be a pain). Granted, I understand that the sense overlay is meant to run the sense based software and was never designed for crossover development, but is there any way to bring over the duo camera software to the GPe rom? If not, it's no big deal. I was just curious. It's honestly the only thing I'd miss. The standard google cam software is alright, but I know the camera is meant to do certain things. Just wondering.

In not entirely certain about this but apparently since GPE was built specific for this device the GPE camera app supports the hardware of the camera including the duo. The difference is the camera effects which can be done post picture with the HTC software available from the play store

Is it at all possible to make that camera app as an independent (from Sense 6) app ? Or am I dreaming ?

Dreaming. It relies on the sense 6 framework which isn't included in GPE models. (AFIK)
?!

I understand that part, where it relies on Sense 6, but how big is that dependence and how impossible is it to make that app work by it's own, like any other (sideloadable ) app ?
I mean I am not gonna handle this "issue" myself, but I do wanna have a clue how it works and how come it's that hard to do or maybe completely impossible ?!
This app is the only reason me and a lot other will not want to flash GPD on M8, cuz the camera is "bad" enough already to risk it, make it even worse ) Otherwise HTC did a great job adding a lot of hardware support for M* in GPE rom.
Thanks

I was just thinking of that exact thread; as I remember when the dev posted it, and have linked to it several times in the past myself.
Technically its "possible" as almost anything is. But whether its "feasible" or not is a completely different issue. Basically no dev is going to put that kind of effort and time into something with not that much payoff; when you can just flash a Sense ROM.

[Q] HTC Camera on Nexus

Is there any chance to install the new version of the HTC camera seen on the HTC One M8 with Sense 6.0 on Android Stock devices like the Nexus 5? Is there maybe a .apk floating around in the forums I didn't find?
Cheers

But there are a lot of feature that are working without the dualcamera, so it would be great to use those

Even regardless of the dual camera, the short answer is NO, not going to happen.
First off, the camera is dependent on Sense framework, so just installing the APK is not going to make it work.
Further, the effort to post the camera along with the necessary Sense framework while technically "possible" would be extremely tedious and laborious. So "possible" to port it, technically yes. Feasible? No.

[Q] What do people love about cyanogen mod?

This is my first phone with the capabilities to flash custom Roms and so far I've flashed most of the Roms available for the m9. I have my favorites.
But I've noticed that cyanogen mod has a huge following. What is it that makes this rom so famous? What are the pros and con's of the rom?
I saw that the beta version is out and would love to hear opinions on the rom to buy some time until a stable version is ready for me to test drive.
Thanks for your input
Sent from my HTC One M9 using XDA Free mobile app
Cyanogen mod is among one of the oldest full-featured android ROMS available. It has survived for so long since it is highly customizable, fast, stable, and gets good battery life. I'd definitely give it a go if you are curious about it. If you don't like it you can always restore from a backup or flash another rom.
I think a major factor in choosing to use it is that it's completely "de-bloated". There is no OEM crap taking up space and wasting battery.
Sure, most of us disable those things or uninstall them with Ti Backup, but it's just so much cleaner never to have had them.
It's really quick, and since it's based on AOSP, a lot more Xposed modules and customizers wwork with it (Like GravityBox, for example).
You should definitely try it out if you're curious. You'll probably like it.
The only downside is that the nightly builds and betas can be slightly dodgy sometimes (though the beta that's out is pretty good, minus the camera) and that since it's closer to a Vanilla android feel than OEM skins, you usually lose some of the device's unique software functionality. (Sometimes these can be re-downloaded from the play store, other times they just won't work)
Make a nandroid (or whatever we call these now. TWRP Backup?) and give it a go!
Thanks. I found this earlier explaining a little. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Main_Page
I still appreciate your opinions and would love to hear more. If there is anything more to add. These guys explained it well.

On HTC phone I don't use CM nor MIUI, the last time I did was on Nexus 1 years ago.
Though it should be good on samsung and LG + sense 7 port from xpirt
Thanks. @vivremetrique I recognize your name from the cm rom post. Are you one of the devs of the rom? I plan on flashing it soon. But I am going to wait for the camera to get fixed first. Also, will there be any sound mods like viper4android or just an amp?
I'm not sure if its the current rom I'm on or the firmware but it seems like my music isn't as loud as it was a few weeks ago.

No, I'm not one of the devs, just an "enthusiastic" tester and user
I'm really not sure about the sound mods, but I'd imagine that eventually v4a would work properly.
(If it doesn't already, this thread suggests that someone was able to get it working by changing SELinux mode to permissive, but it doesn't seem to have worked for everyone. You can always try it!)
I haven't updated my firmware recently so I'm not sure if an update may have affected sound volume (I'm not sure if you've updated your firmware either, but the CM Beta only works on 1.32.x so far anyway )

Thanks for the link. I didn't know that v4a was actually in the play store. I've only seen it in a custom rom. I actually have the selinux permission app already so definitely worth the try.
I'm on the new 2.8 developers edition firmware right now. But being as flashing firmware is so easy I can switch anytime. Am definitely going to follow the progress of cm and when it looks like most of the bugs are worked out I'll give it a try. Can't really run a beta on my phone because it is my daily driver.
You're welcome!
Keep in mind that you might need to be S-Off in order to tinker with firmware beyond updating it
(On some devices you need S-Off to downgrade or flash unsigned)
I am s-off thanks. Coming from my locked bootloader vzw s3 to this has been amazing. So I've unlocked everything to allow me full flexibility and freedom to customize as I see fit. I may never buy a carrier phone again.

Stock Android?

Long shot here, but is there a stock android either Lollipop or Marshmallow (way unlikely) that I can flash to this device once it is S-Off?
Nope. Closest you would get would be CM, but the camera is not fully functional yet and I don't know if it supports advanced calling on Verizon either.

Neo, thanks for pointing that out. However, I was referring to stock android along the lines on what you would find on Nexus Devices. On my One M8, I was able to flash stock android like was found on the google play edition. I couldn't quite tell whether the link you posted when I first browsed it yesterday was bone stock, or was still customized by HTC (HTC dialer, HTC help, HTC clock, etc).

Oh, so you're looking for a form of AOSP then ie: vanilla android os with no sense gui or other gui.
As the previous member stated, we have it, we can build it, but for now the camera is broken and wake gestures don't look to be working. Everything else appears to work ok. Actually, CM recently just pushed some changes to the device which might fix camera. I or flyhalf may put a build together and try it out soon.
The link I posted just now is the stock factory shipped sense rom (most updated).
Thanks Neo for your effort in attempting to put that together, I look forward to it!

Neo,
Sorry to revive this relatively old thread. CM has nightlies for the GSM M9 (himaul). From the bits and pieces that I've found around XDA and the web in general, it seems like it's working well with the potential exception of some bluetooth issues (which I don't really care all that much about right now). It's not built to run on the Verizon m9 though.
I know there's CandyRom, which is based on CM, but I'm looking for as close to AOSP as possible. Sense is actually okay, but I don't want any of the VZ specific stuff that's found on the stock ROMS I've seen. I know I can disable >>most<< of it, but definitely not all.
Is there general guidance out there on how to build CM from the himaul source, but make it compatible with the m9 himawl (verizon)? Any other suggestions for vanilla-ish ROMs?
The m8 version was compatible with all and worked well. Don't know why the m9 version isn't Verizon compatible (yet?).
Thanks! Happy Thanksgiving.

Trying to find a good ROM for Verizon M9

Hi, I'm trying to get a solid ROM for my Verizon One M9 and keep running into small bumps along the way. I used CM13 for a few months and loved it but found that the GPS wasn't working, because it can't get a lock. This is a known issue but there isn't a consistent solution yet. I saw that ViperOneM9 was a good ROM as well, but the Google App always crashes. I have verified that it is the ROM by redownloading and double checking the MD5. I also saw that LeeDroid was popular (and includes the HTC 10 version of Sense) so I wanted to give that a spin but found that with Systemless root it wouldn't boot at all, and with System-based root it got stuck on the boot screen. Right now I am using the rooted stock ROM but the Google apps keep crashing (nothing has actually closed on my, I just keep getting the notifications). Does anyone have any suggestions for any of those? Is there a ROM someone would suggest that I haven't tried? I am looking for something with lots of customization options.
Insert coin enhanced (ICE) works flawlessly for me. You might give it a shot.

Never mind
I'm ROM shopping too. Thinking of trying ICE. One thing I noticed is that some of these threads say to download the ROM to your virtual SD. I had always used the external SD on my other phones. I thought a clean flash means wiping everything, but the external SD. Can anyone clarify?
I'm in the same boat as all are, try to get some status bar tweaks! I have tried Xposed, LeeDroid tweaks, and sense tweaks - I can't get any of them to run on my M9. Love the phone just looking for some customization! Thanks

Have you tried Gravity Box with Xposed? I know it's for more vanilla versions of Android, but could potentially work. I've used it on my Moto phones without an issue at all. I'm not even rooted, but would if Gravity Box works simply to get rid of some of the silly notifications that HTC thinks we need.
Edit: For those that have scoured the forum (and other M9 forums), is there an up to date and maintained GPE rom that works for our M9s?
Thanks for input. I tried gravity box and couldn't get it to work, it did work on my M7, though! Maybe I'll give it another shot! Thanks
