Stock Android? - Verizon HTC One (M9)

Long shot here, but is there a stock android either Lollipop or Marshmallow (way unlikely) that I can flash to this device once it is S-Off?

Nope. Closest you would get would be CM, but the camera is not fully functional yet and I don't know if it supports advanced calling on Verizon either.

Neo, thanks for pointing that out. However, I was referring to stock android along the lines on what you would find on Nexus Devices. On my One M8, I was able to flash stock android like was found on the google play edition. I couldn't quite tell whether the link you posted when I first browsed it yesterday was bone stock, or was still customized by HTC (HTC dialer, HTC help, HTC clock, etc).

Oh, so you're looking for a form of AOSP then ie: vanilla android os with no sense gui or other gui.
As the previous member stated, we have it, we can build it, but for now the camera is broken and wake gestures don't look to be working. Everything else appears to work ok. Actually, CM recently just pushed some changes to the device which might fix camera. I or flyhalf may put a build together and try it out soon.
The link I posted just now is the stock factory shipped sense rom (most updated).

Thanks Neo for your effort in attempting to put that together, I look forward to it!

Neo,
Sorry to revive this relatively old thread. CM has nightlies for the GSM M9 (himaul). From the bits and pieces that I've found around XDA and the web in general, it seems like it's working well with the potential exception of some bluetooth issues (which I don't really care all that much about right now). It's not built to run on the Verizon m9 though.
I know there's CandyRom, which is based on CM, but I'm looking for as close to AOSP as possible. Sense is actually okay, but I don't want any of the VZ specific stuff that's found on the stock ROMS I've seen. I know I can disable >>most<< of it, but definitely not all.
Is there general guidance out there on how to build CM from the himaul source, but make it compatible with the m9 himawl (verizon)? Any other suggestions for vanilla-ish ROMs?
The m8 version was compatible with all and worked well. Don't know why the m9 version isn't Verizon compatible (yet?).
Thanks! Happy Thanksgiving.

Magic/ION/Google ROM on the Hero!

Hi Guys!
I have been searching for days if someone has managed to install a clean google rom on his HTC Hero. I can only find people running rooted Hero Roms.
The point is, i want to get rid of all the HTC Apps. I've managed to delete a lot of the stock applications, and it improved the speed a lot!
If i install any other "Magic based rom" the phone will hang on the HTC boot screen.
If i push original google apps like "contacts.apk/.odex" to the phone, they won't run.
Can someone port the original Magic/ION rom to the Hero please? I know a lot of people want to run a "clean android" rom on the hero.

My phone is rooted now with Modaco / CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF.

I cannot see the point why someone would want that . No offense , i mean all the HTC customisation and Rosie was the whole point in buying this device instead of the HTC Magic( which has the exact same specifications and a way lot cheaper)

To be honest, i don't really know why i bought the hero. I didn't know much about android at the time i bought one. Now i know better, but anyway, that's not what i want to discuss..
The magic can almost run any rom, why can't the hero run any rom i want?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please people, i don't want to be a jerk, but don't come up with questions like "Why did you buy a hero then?" ..

I'm on the same boat. When I bought my hero I hadn't really seen any working Android phone, either stock or HTC. Now that I have seen both I think that the stock apps and interface are somehow saner than HTC's, and what can I say? I'd prefer to use them.
Why don't you run the Rosie remover. It will get you part of the way to where you want to go
Indeed! but I also prefer the stock browser, the stock music player, the stock calendar, the stock contact list and dialer... and so on. They look less flashy but handier to my taste.
I totally agree with, frandavid100. I would also love to have a vanilla android rom on my Hero.
Actually, why do magic roms not work with the hero? What kind of modification would you have to do for them to work?

I think that the hero rom is not like the win rom. i mean all the htc customisations superimposed on the windows ones. There, all we had to do was just to remove the htc ones and we automatically got the windows ones.
I guess android's different. we have to remove all the htc customisations and add android's ones. Problem is hero never had the android's applications. what could be done is take a magic rom, remove all the applications and try to port them to the hero.
Problems would definetely arise cause the 2 phones are not 100% identical. some software work on the magic but not on hero bla bla bla.
I know some stock apps do work with the hero. I have been able to use the stock calendar and browser in my hero by replacing the apk and odex files, however replacing the contacts app makes it hang.
We could try to make a list of what apps can be replaced and how, or maybe even make update.zip files specific for that, similar to modaco's rosie remover. How difficult would that be?

I think that you'll probably find that the difference here is that chefs with a Magic or G1 actively want to "upgrade" to the latest and greatest ROMs. So, when presented with a Hero ROM, they will make the effort to back port it to the hardware they have.
The situation with the Hero is a little different. Here we already have the "latest and greatest", so there is probably very little motivation for a chef to port what is essentially an earlier ROM to the Hero. What you need to find is a chef who has a Hero, who either wants to run stock android, or is interesting in the intellectual challenge!
So, it's not really the case that "the magic can almost run any rom" - it's that their are chefs with Magics who are building these ROMs.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks guys!
I knew i wasn't the only one who wanted a clean vanilla android rom on the hero. Like frandavid100 said before, till there's another "magic rom" or something, we could make a list of apps working on hero.
I've had the same thing with the Contacts.app. This makes the phone freeze, and after removing the battery it constantly reboots.
If we all together manage to make a list of apps, i can create an update.zip which does all the work.

Let's do a test. I know you can replace HTC's browser with Android's. I'm attaching the files for both, can you create an update.zip that removes the HTC files from /system/apps, and pushes the stock ones?
EDIT: failed to upload the files to the forum. You can get them here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TVL3Y8UE

I will do that tomorrow ok? I live in The Netherlands and its 09.35pm and i'm watching a movie
BTW: I also have a stock Magic/ION image. I can extract the apps from there as well. Tomorrow i'll try some apps.
Thanks for the effort guys!
Just another quick post. Below you'll see a list of apps which i'm going to try tomorrow. Please post request apps if i forget one.
- Contacts (probably doesn't work)
- Phone (unknown - probably same as contacts)
- Browser (probably works)
- Music Player (probably works)
- Messages/sms?
- Camera (unknown)
- Albums (probably no multitouch)
- Camcorder (don't know if this one is available)
- Calender (probably works)
- Calculator (unknown)
- Clock (don't know if this one is available)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW; If you guys want the original android lockscreen, just remove HtcLockScreen.apk/odex. After reboot you'll have the original android lockscreen where you have to press "menu" to unlock. Works faster and ofcourse no lag!
Hey, if you come back during the ads... can you point me to that stock rom? I'd like to try some of those too.
I can advance that Browser and Calendar do work (I'm using them right now).

Im also going to try to port the sapphire keyboard to the hero. Don't know if someone already did this, i haven't used google yet.
Actually, the keyboard is one of the few things I like from HTC's customisations I'll give the sapphire one a try tho!

Poring MIUI

Hey All,
I have been hovering around the MIUI forums, and it seems like they have beta version of MIUI available for the HTC One (GSM/International). I searched for porting guides and it seems as if we would need a boot.img that matches the Android version 4.2.2. Does anyone have access to that? My understanding is our partitions are different from the rest of the HTC One's, does the Sprint version have similar partitions?
Also, I don't think MIUI has the proper coding to run on a CDMA network, is that correct? Any other differences that need to be looked at to get this thing booting on our devices?
Thanks

I had miui on my verizon S3 so it is possible.
I have read that our partitions are different from sprints. I am not knowledgeable enough to explain or say anything further though.
Miui is built from source since it is based off of cm.

It's not built from source at all. It's more or less a themed modded version of cm. You build miui into the cm apps, and it uses the cm kernel but it's not source built at all.

I did not know that..so technically its doable using a stock sense ROM..kind of like porting 4.3 Roms to our Verizon variant?
So,...how much interest is there in this?
I did a quick initial port and everything seems to be working. :good:
There are a few small quirks yet to be ironed out, but nothing that effects usability at all.
Mainly the fact that the 3g and 1x icons are always showing, one over the other, even though I believe 4G to be working.
Anyhow, data, calls, camera, wifi, Gps, all that stuff works fine...
It uses the Sense camera and includes the HTC TV application as well.
The rest of it is miui applications and UI.
Let me know, as I have no plans to persue it any further unless more people actually want it.

Converting to GPe. Firewater fail

Hi guys. I'm convert ing my AT&T M8 to GPe since I'm used to using my nexus tablet so much. This is my first shot at custom ROMs with android but I used to be big into the homebrew scene in the good old PSP days, so I'm not a stranger to modifying devices past their potential lol.
I've flashed my custom recovery and have installed supersu to the device, however.0, after running firewater, it fails and says firewater can't work with the device. It stops after "chugging first bottle"
I even installed Insertcoin rom because it says to do it with a rom with an insecure kernel for better results and it still fails.
- on a side note, while I have insertcoin installed in the meantime, does anyone know why after I flashed the rom my boot time is a few minutes long now? Seems strange to me.
Anyways, any help/comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

HTC patched the exploit Firewater used, doesn't work anymore. Can try Sunshine S-OFF
[Android][HTC S-OFF] SunShine for modern HTC devices
It's $25 , though it works and even in the event that it "might" not work. Your device gets tested to make sure it'll work before you have to pay the money, so if it passes you can pay, if it won't succeed you won't need to pay $25 for something that won't work...
Ah fiddlesticks! No way around that, huh? Well I guess I can learn to live with Sense. Does anybody recommend any other roms that don't need s-off other than the Insertcoin one I'm running now? I can learn to live with it but it does take roughly 5 minutes to boot, which is kind of a pain. Just wondering. Thanks.

definitely will check it out once I get into the rom a bit.
One more quick, possibly stupid question (I'm sorry to be a pain). Granted, I understand that the sense overlay is meant to run the sense based software and was never designed for crossover development, but is there any way to bring over the duo camera software to the GPe rom? If not, it's no big deal. I was just curious. It's honestly the only thing I'd miss. The standard google cam software is alright, but I know the camera is meant to do certain things. Just wondering.

In not entirely certain about this but apparently since GPE was built specific for this device the GPE camera app supports the hardware of the camera including the duo. The difference is the camera effects which can be done post picture with the HTC software available from the play store

Even regardless of the dual camera, the short answer is NO, not going to happen.
First off, the camera is dependent on Sense framework, so just installing the APK is not going to make it work.
Further, the effort to post the camera along with the necessary Sense framework while technically "possible" would be extremely tedious and laborious. So "possible" to port it, technically yes. Feasible? No.
rohan32 had a good explanation for this a while ago: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780038

[Q] What do people love about cyanogen mod?

This is my first phone with the capabilities to flash custom Roms and so far I've flashed most of the Roms available for the m9. I have my favorites.
But I've noticed that cyanogen mod has a huge following. What is it that makes this rom so famous? What are the pros and con's of the rom?
I saw that the beta version is out and would love to hear opinions on the rom to buy some time until a stable version is ready for me to test drive.
Thanks for your input
Sent from my HTC One M9 using XDA Free mobile app
Cyanogen mod is among one of the oldest full-featured android ROMS available. It has survived for so long since it is highly customizable, fast, stable, and gets good battery life. I'd definitely give it a go if you are curious about it. If you don't like it you can always restore from a backup or flash another rom.
I think a major factor in choosing to use it is that it's completely "de-bloated". There is no OEM crap taking up space and wasting battery.
Sure, most of us disable those things or uninstall them with Ti Backup, but it's just so much cleaner never to have had them.
It's really quick, and since it's based on AOSP, a lot more Xposed modules and customizers wwork with it (Like GravityBox, for example).
You should definitely try it out if you're curious. You'll probably like it.
The only downside is that the nightly builds and betas can be slightly dodgy sometimes (though the beta that's out is pretty good, minus the camera) and that since it's closer to a Vanilla android feel than OEM skins, you usually lose some of the device's unique software functionality. (Sometimes these can be re-downloaded from the play store, other times they just won't work)
Make a nandroid (or whatever we call these now. TWRP Backup?) and give it a go!
Thanks. I found this earlier explaining a little. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Main_Page
I still appreciate your opinions and would love to hear more. If there is anything more to add. These guys explained it well.

Thanks. @vivremetrique I recognize your name from the cm rom post. Are you one of the devs of the rom? I plan on flashing it soon. But I am going to wait for the camera to get fixed first. Also, will there be any sound mods like viper4android or just an amp?
I'm not sure if its the current rom I'm on or the firmware but it seems like my music isn't as loud as it was a few weeks ago.

No, I'm not one of the devs, just an "enthusiastic" tester and user
I'm really not sure about the sound mods, but I'd imagine that eventually v4a would work properly.
(If it doesn't already, this thread suggests that someone was able to get it working by changing SELinux mode to permissive, but it doesn't seem to have worked for everyone. You can always try it!)
I haven't updated my firmware recently so I'm not sure if an update may have affected sound volume (I'm not sure if you've updated your firmware either, but the CM Beta only works on 1.32.x so far anyway )

I'm on the new 2.8 developers edition firmware right now. But being as flashing firmware is so easy I can switch anytime. Am definitely going to follow the progress of cm and when it looks like most of the bugs are worked out I'll give it a try. Can't really run a beta on my phone because it is my daily driver.
You're welcome!
Keep in mind that you might need to be S-Off in order to tinker with firmware beyond updating it
(On some devices you need S-Off to downgrade or flash unsigned)
I am s-off thanks. Coming from my locked bootloader vzw s3 to this has been amazing. So I've unlocked everything to allow me full flexibility and freedom to customize as I see fit. I may never buy a carrier phone again.
