Only 86.4MB visible when connection S8500 - Bada Software and Hacking General

Hi,
I'm currently trying to use my Samsung Wave S8500 again, and want to get Android on it. I've done it before but I'm a bit rusty on working with it.
Most things I will be able to figure out and find online.
However there's one problem I'm stuck with. Whenever I connect the phone to the computer I can only see 1 partition of 86.4MB.
Google and the XDA can't help me (At least not with the terms I tried using)
I don't recall what exactly I did with the phone the last time, now I flashed a new Bootloader and Fota from this android version.
When I place the corresponding zlimage file on the 86.4mb partition I can boot into the CWM Recovery mode.
Bada also works like regular. However after using some of the functions in the recovery mode (I didn't really know what I did, and I believe it wasn't too smart) the Memory status is:
Total / Available
System Memory: 564 MB ./ 162 MB
Application Memory 129 MB / 3.00 KB
Internal User Memory 85.2 MB / 38.9 MB
Before using some recovery functions these numbers were different (mainly higher)
Can anyone help me with my problems? I want to get any android version on the phone asap. I have a broken SD card so I hope I can do it without any SD card. (Buying a new SD card is not really an option as my next phone won't have a slot)
Kind regards,
Advena

1. reflash bada (FULL)
2. run bada > factort reset
3. copy zImage/boot.img to sd card
4. install android

Can't believe it was that simple.
I started reflashing just before I saw your post just to at least have the newest version.
And yes it instantly booted with the full 390MB

A complete Newbie

i have a new problem that i just figured :S, market wont download for some reason, i think it has something to do with rooting, it opens normally and i start browsing the market, and i download something, it says downloading but it never goes further than that, any info available about that?
hello all, i just bought an HTC desire, and i'm a complete newb when it comes to understanding the technical details of how to get the best out of my O.S
i managed to root the phone using unrevoked, because all i really wanted for now was to save apps on SD card instead of phone memory(very very small phone memory)
and i noticed that most people use an app. called APP2SD or something like that, but most of the instructions had something related to ROMS and stuff like that, and i dont really understand how all the ROMS thing work, so my question is, is there a way 2 install APP2SD directly on my unrooted with original O.S desire (2.1), and without using an SD as a goldcard or something like that( i saw a tutorial where having a goldcard was a must)
i'm very sorry if this a bit too newbie,
thank you.
no, you will have to be rooted for proper A2SD to work, unless you upgrade to froyo, you won't have A2sd, but the froyo a2sd has too many ristrictions on which apps can be moved, it is better off to root your phone and installl a custom rom with proper A2SD....
i meant rooted mobile, my phone is rooted ,what ROMS do you recommend that have a good A2SD and would be effective?
If you're looking for a stock Sense-based ROM then look at LeeDroid. Not used it myself but a lot of people say it's good
If you want Sense and a stable running operating system, go with LeeDroid.
It has APP2SD+ integrated already.
To 'activate' it you have to modify your SD card prior. So on your currently rooted phone you have to install ROM manager from the market. If you open this app, you have an option to partition the SD card. Select it and create a 512MB EXT partition and no swap file/partition. It will reboot your phone, enter the recovery mode, format the whole SD card (so everything will be lost on it), create an EXT3 partition and then it will reboot again to Android. Nothing visible changed yet, except that you lost 500MB free space on your SD card.
After you've done that you can flash LeeDroid. It will automatically detect the EXT3 partition on your SD card and activate APP2SD+. Every app, which gets installed on the internal memory now, gets in real installed on the EXT3 partition on your SD card.
For all this you need root, which you already have.
A Goldcard is only necessary to get root on a branded Desire.
Gold card isn't needed to root a branded phone, it's needed to install an RUU from another vendor code onto your Desire. e.g. flash a WWE ROM onto a T-Mobile device

Can I root my o2 froyo branded HTC desire and use the apps2sd+ alone to installs apps on my SD card without using a custom Rom.

This is a general problem atm and it's not based on rooting. Google should fix the market next days (hoping that).

I follow your recommendation. Run ROM manager, then go to Partition SD, 512 Kb, 0 swap, then say Ok to reboot anв format but then ... nothing is happend - phone is rebooting and look with exclamation sign and green android forever... How long should I wait for the card (8Gb) to be formated?

Still having questions about Android

Message edited by myself :
I have/had a lot of questions about using Android on my Kaiser, so I'm editing this message, integrating my questions and their answers..
1° How to install softwares on the microSD card? (Thanks to l1q1d !)
-> You need a microSD class 4 or more to do it.. Partition like this (for a 2Gb microSD) : 1600 Mb FAT32 + 32 Mb EXT2 + 300 Mb EXT2 with QParted or "Minitool Partition Wizard"
-> During Android's installation, you have to choose System on NAND, and Data on "SD Card Partition" !
2° The camera doesnt works.. Do I need to change the kernel (.nbh file I guess?) or is it a ROM problem? (Thanks to Krazy-Killa!)
-> It is a RADIO problem
-> All radios 1.65.xx make the camera unusable, but phone is stable. All 1.71.xx radios allow camera function but break phone stability.
3° How could I be able to transfer files from my PC to my Android phone? (thanks to myself)
-> Using DoubleTwist (on PC) and DoubleTwist AirSync on your phone! It is like an iTunes, but for Android.
4° How can I access the Android Market and its content from my computer? (thanks to myself)
-> Using DoubleTwist on your computer!
5° How can I watch Youtube videos on my phone? Or, how to watch embedded youtube videos in my browser?
-> Don't know..
6° How can I watch divx videos on my phone?
-> Don't know..
6°
Thanks to everyone!
1° I can't install softwares on the microSD card.. Tried to make a EXT2 partition (1500 Mb FAT32 + 500 Mb Ext2), but it won't use it!
-> If I select "Data on EXT2 Data.img" during installation, it makes a "data.img" file on my FAT32 partition, but I think it is even not using it..
This may sound wierd, but your /data dir is inside data.img. The file is mounted via loop to that dir. Windows analogy, TrueCrypt, although for other purposes.
-> If i select "Data on SDCard partition", it says he's not able to "umount /data"..
Your SD card MUST correctly be partitioned. Windows will not partitions removable drives, please use dedicated software. Take this syntax and apply for you SD size:
For a 4GB sd, 3.2 gb for first PRIMARY partition FAT32, 64mgs for 2nd PRIMARY partition EXT2, 512 mgs for 3rd PRIMARY partition EXT. Your SDcard will be the Fat32 partition, your data the last partition. Adjust acordingly.
2° The camera doesnt works.. Do I need to change the kernel (.nbh file I guess?) or is it a ROM problem?
NBH might be considered a ROM, the kernel (and others) part of it. The Androidinstall.tar might also be considered a ROM, the system part of it (in this case, Android OS).
But yes... perhaps a very wrong mismatch of kernel VS androidinstall.tar
3° I wonder if I could be able to transfer files from my PC to my phone.. If it does, how could I do it?
Not easy. You cannot mount the sd card via USB. Not yet at least.
You will never be able to mount the sdcard if you use the data.img option. (both Android and your computer cannot access at the same time to the sdcard. Cut android from /data, and expect SERIOUS malfunctions.
(i digress... but if /data was in data.img, and /sdcard as in sdcard.img you could mount the sdcard. But then again... Kaiser MMC/SD reader is quite.... SLOW.)

Thanks for this fast answer.
Do you have any solution to see the camera working?
I partitioned with PartitionWizard for Windows, very useful tool, which is able to support Ext2, etc..
But the problem is that if I select the "SD partition" option (to stock the data) in the Android installer, it says "unable to umount /data"..
I will give it a try with 3 partitions as you said
Edit : okay, so, I made these 3 partitions (on a 2Gb SD) : 1500 Mb FAT32 + 32Mb EXT2 + 300Mb EXT2, it is approximately the same.
Then I boot the phone, I select "Sys on NAND", "Data on SDCard partition", I try to install, some (normal) text appears, but nothing more..
And, if I select "Data on EXT2 Data.img", it makes a "Data.img" in my 1.5Gb FAT32 partition! It makes no sense..
I also have another question : could you explain me the difference between ODEX and DEODEX ?
I made searchs on the web, but not very useful help..
No comment about your search skills....

Oh thanks. This page was even in my bookmarks..
Maybe I saw it but did not read the good lines..
L1qU1d, do you have some answers for my previous questions??
Which one? daedric responded well to all the questions
Not really.
I'm still unable to use the camera (with Froyo ROMs).
And I'm still unable to stock data on a EXT2 partition (in my SDCard)..
Also, I noticed today that I can't install some ROMs, as "Fat Free Froyo"..
With the same options than other ROMs, it wont boot.. So sad!

Do you mean your front camera or the main camera on the back side of the phone?
Front camera doesn't work in any builds.
Back camera needs to be fixed by flashing another radio.
Radios can be found here:

Funny thing with my case. My camera doesn't work either (but chose not to bother with it), as I have two issues.
1. All radios 1.65.xx make my camera unusable, but phone is stable.
2. 1.71.xx radios allow camera function but break phone stability.
So in my case it's Catch 22, lol. Do I want the camera but an unstable phone or no camera and stable phone.
Sent from my AT&T Tilt using XDA App
Hmm, tried every radio?
If that's the case I would prefer stability above the camera.
Since the camera quality isn't super anyways so.
My Tilt had the 1.65.21.18 radio loaded stock when I got it, still using it to this day and having no trouble with instability, and yes tried all 1.65.xx radios and none allow camera usability. Used all 1.71.x radios, all unstable but camera works, and even then I get one shot out of it and the phone crashes.

My SD is partitioned like this : 1.5Gb FAT32 + 32Mb EXT2 + 300Mb EXT2
Following your advice, I started ATools and made these changes :
- System -> Auto
- Data -> SD Partition 3 (300 Mb)
- Swap -> SD Partition 2 (32 Mb)
I installed, and at first boot, it says "System is not responding". But after a while (30 secs), it boots, but totally unstable, many problems..
Maybe should I remove the "Swap" option?
Also, another question : how could I know my "LCD Panel" type? I have sometimes display issues like the white screen so I guess "Auto" option is not a good choice.

Yah the front camera is supported but only in the kernel. Our android builds still don't have the software to utilize the front camera.
If you really want to use the camera try flashing a 1.71.xx radio but if you want stability go 1.65.xx radios.
Swap should actually improve performance, but that also depends on your SD Card Class (class 6 is recomended)
There's really no way to know what lcd panel you have except by experimenting. I'm using Panel 3 though I still get the white screen I don't have any issues with it powering back on. Panel 2 is most common however.
Btw some builds have their launcher on /data. You can check by using the mixer in aTools and possibly move the launcher into /system (Though MAKE SURE you don't overfill /system. No more than 100MB for the /system folder is what I recommend)
If the Launcher is on /data that could explain your slow performance.

I think I will go for stability, I'm using another phone to take pictures, so I dont care about that.
Tried without changing the Swap, but it's still the same, system still crashes..
I can't find this option in aTools mixer.. Or, I don't know how to check it..
My priority is having a good and stable (then maybe fast, also) ROM, with applications installed on my SD card..
Run a search for aTools here on the forums, there should be a thread along with a link to a tutorial on how to use the mixer.
I would but I'm on my phone, and 3G here is crap, lol.

No problem, thanks for your help.
Which ROM could you advise me, for stability?
NotSoSuperFroyo seems to be very stable, but I can't really judge it..
I installed Radio 1.65.21.18 as yours, and will give it a try!
Also, is there an application to read .AVI (Divx) videos?? As TCPMP (Windows Mobile) or VLC (iPhone / Windows)
Gingerbones, but then again I use it because it's stripped down do much that I can customize it to my liking and let's me isolate problems.
The other is not so super froyo, as it's pretty stable too.

I think I will edit this topic as a basic FAQ
Could someone teach me how to :
1. Watch youtube videos on Android ?
2. Watch my .avi files ??
3. Take notes (as Windows Mobile notepad, where you can draw & write!) ?
Thanks a lot!

Dead Internal SD Solution Galaxy S

Fully working Samsung Galaxy S - Using 16GB External Micro SD to run OS and function as External SD!!
Ok so to set the scene I will quickly explain the issue I had with my Samasung Galaxy S.
One day it worked....
Next day it didn't...from then on it would only boot to first screen then continually repeat this step.....
After day two of having no luck at fixing the issue I got an S3...great phone!
BUT DONT GIVE UP JUST YET! It can be fixed!!!
Overall I think I would have spent somewhere in the ballpark of about 40 hours trying to fix the Galaxy S...stubborn? Yes....and my Galaxy S was such a good phone I hated the idea of binning it.
I wont waste your time listing the hundreds of methods I tried or posts I read, but in the end all things pointed to a dead internal SD.
I should be able to run the OS off an external SD... shouldn't I? The answer is Yes!
Many hours were spent on this stage and for about a week I had a working pone with OS running on External SD, but no access to the camera or anything which required an external SD.
I now have a perfectly working phone, using a 16gb External SD to run the OS and remaining space on it recognised as the external SD.
I can't promise this will work for everyone but here is the last of WAY TO MANY methods I used which completely solved this problem for me.
Let me know if this works for you & GOOD LUCK!
Step 1:
Your phone must be rooted!
The best, easiest and only way I was able to do it is with the following guide, big thank you to the person who put it up. As my Internal SD was dead! my external SD was to be my new internal SD...so the standard add to zip method for rooting on external SD... would obviously not work for me! yes I worded that perfectly!
BIG IMPORTANT NOTE IN CAPITAL LETTERS! - Make sure you have your external SD inserted during the below process!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546
NOW! You should have your phone booting as it used to back in the good old days! However.....some of you wont...if this is the case please follow Step 1B.
Step 1B:
If the above did not work for you then you need a way to connect your Micro SD to your PC (I did this using a USB adaptor).
1. Download and install EaseUS partition master
2. Insert Micro SD in PC
3. EaseUS partition master
4. Wipe all partitions/data.
5. Create EXT4 partition approx 2gb
6. Create FAT32 partition with remaining space.
7. Remove battery from phone
8. Insert SD, Battery back in.
9. Turn on, you should have your phone booting as it used to back in the good old days!
IF NOT THEN.....Start with Step 1B then do Step1 then if all looking as it should move to step 2. If not...sorry...I have failed you!
Step 2:
You phone should now have booted like the good old days....but if you go into SD/Storage on android OS, you will notice it does not recognise the remaining space on the External SD as an external SD...it must be very confusing for the green robot!
So next steps as follows!
1. Install script manager app and mount r/w app from Google Play (market)
2. Use mount r/w to Mount the system partition in r/w mode.
3. Browse using script manager app as root (change setting in config).
4. Go to /system/etc folder and change file permission for vold.fstab to rwxrwxrwx (This means tick all the 9 boxes on the left not the 3 on the right.....such a technical explanation)
5. Then edit the vold.fstab file as text and change the following
Change:
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard auto /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/mmc_host/mmc0
to
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard auto /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc2
Change:
s3c-sdhci.0
to
s3c-sdhci.2
Change:
mmc0
to
mmc2
Save the file and reboot the phone!
If all has gone well then your sdcard partition will be mounted and old faithful is ready to ride once again!
I hope this worked for you, if it didn't...gutted and I guess you have moved onto the next post...good hunting!
Please note this solution was created from a pile of posts I trawled through to get a solution. The above vold.fstab solution was taken from the following post. Unfortunately this posts overall solution didn't work for me, but I would not have been able to mount remaining External SD Space as well...you know THE EXTERNAL SD! without his post, which is the best part!

Thanks for this, I'm going to try this again. Finally a good explanation of what to do.
I posted a thread yesterday with, I think, the same problem. Could you take a look and see if I have the same problem as you did?
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905284
EDIT
Does the EXT4 partition has to be the first and the FAT32 the second?
If so, isn't it a problem that windows can't read the FAT32 partition. In case I need to drop files on it? (because it only reads the first)
EDIT
Thanks in advance!
Good Luck!

do EXT4 first, make both as primary partitions (NOT logical..probably obvious but just spelling it out )

with the method I used above you shouldnt need to drop any files on, let me know.
Quite similar except I couldnt acces my internal SD at all, let me know how you go!
Same issue ?
Hi,
My friend has Galaxy S, And he has similar issue. For him phone boots till splash screen and then reboots on its own.
He was able to go to recovery mode/wipe data/cache partitions etc. He was also able to go to download mode.
But he didn't try flashing custom ROM or anything instead he gave it to Samsung service center where they told him that his Motherboard has gone for toss and need to replace complete MOBO which would cost $110 (6K INR).
Though i didnt get time to check his cell myself i guess it is because of internal SD card has gone. Because he was telling in recovery page it was showing some mount error (not sure if it was internal or external SD card). If that is the case i can try this method to run OS from external SD card .
I have two questions here.
1] If MOBO was gone (like samsung service guy told) would it still boot at first place ? or even if it boots would it go to recovery or download mode ?
2] Where exactly Recovery image is stored ? internal SD or in some other memory ?
Thanks
Exactly the same issue! MOBO i doubt it!

Hi,
My friend has Galaxy S, And he has similar issue.
Thanks

That is exactly the same situation my phone was in, exactly.
I highly doubt there was any issue with the motherboard, as I understand it the internal SD is hard wired on the MOBO which is probably why they said to replace it as one piece.

As above! As i understand it it would not go into either mode if MOBO was fried, doubt you would get any response at all.
2] Where exactly Recovery image is stored ? internal SD or in some other memory ?
Il get back to you on this one
Same issue ?

Dead Internal SD Solution Galaxy S - HELP
reganstott,
First of all thank you for the hope.
1 - Your step 1, the link provided doesn't work (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1852546)
is there another link available?
In what step I ACTUALLY install the OS on the EXTERNAL SD, just asking to get the whole pic.
Is it possible, in order to just test it, use a 2GB SD card?
thanks
It seems to work, I only have to do a mount switch now.
The only thing is; I had the EXT4 (2GB) as first partition and FAT32 (5GB) as second, but now if I connect to my PC it sees only 2GB storage of FAT32. So I guess I have to switch them?
I'm going to try again and then do the mount switch.
EDIT
Confirmed this is working, running on CyanogenMod 9.1.0 right now.
I thank you really reaally much! I almost gave up, but luckily I saw your post in time.
Thanks!
help please
Hello,
I guess I have the same problem and wanted to know if you have to CORRECT links to the files
needed to do this.
thanks
p.s.
maybe a short EXTRA explanation on how you did it may help.

Just follow the steps, in case it is still unclear here exactly what I did;
Needed
microSDcard
Step 1
1. Wipe your external SD card and create 2 partitions; first one FAT32, second one EXT4 (about 2GB). Both has to be primary (not local)
I did this with Minitool Partition Wizard
2. Insert the SD card into your phone and install firmware from point 2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546
3. Install CF-Root link is also here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546
4. Check if phone boots right (this goes slower than normal, so just wait)
5. If phone works right do Step 2 from first post
Step 2
My phone happened to have no Play Store after the root. If so, follow this step 2
1. Install this zip: will upload this file in a minute -> I can't post outside links yet -.-
This will to the mount swap (for firmware above)
OR
2. Install a root explorer APK through ADB and edit vold.fstab like Step 2 in first post
Now your phone has to be working. If not, check the steps and try again.
Otherwise your problem is others than ours.
p.s.
If you do flash another ROM don't forget to swap mounts! (edit /system/etc/vold.fstab in zip file from ROM)
Currently on Slimbean 2.5
Thank you
Hello,
First I want to thank you for the effort and time. I believe that my SGS has a very similar problem.
I try to flash it with many ROMS, uninstall the apps, but after reboot they always come back and I get TONS os FORCE CLOSES.
Can't Install new apps, so I guess the internal SD is the problem.
The thing is that my SGS is a Brazilian model I9000b (with TV) just wanted to make sure if it changes anything from the
instructions you gave me.
(I don't need a working TV, so I don't care for another firmware)
thanks

Just a question:
1 - I created 2 partitions on the EXTERNAL SD
2 - inserted the EXTERNAL SD into phone.
3 - on ODIN, how he knows to install the new firmware ON THE EXTERNAL SD rather that on the INTERNAL SD??
---------- Post added at 10:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:49 AM ----------
when I try to apply the new ZIP from sd it doesn't recofnize the SD
actually it never did.
it is showing me the INTERNAL SD with all the folder of the apps I had, which I can't delete anymore.
3 - on ODIN, how he knows to install the new firmware ON THE EXTERNAL SD rather that on the INTERNAL SD??
I don't know how it works, but it does work.
when I try to apply the new ZIP from sd it doesn't recofnize the SD
Which ZIP do you mean? You only have to flash firmware and root through ODIN.
Great

Not a problem, glad it worked for you too. Not sure why the step 1 link isn't working anymore. Anyone else reading this.... I will post soon with the method for step one rooting exercise. (to put a up a brief its just using the odin way of rooting to avoid the issue of not being able to use external sd add zip method)
Info
Hey there,
2 important questions:
1 - My SGS is the Brazilian model I9000B, does it make any difference?
2 - Can I use a 2GB EXTERNAL SD, or it MUST be more than this?
3 - Do I need to have any knowledge in LINUX?
thanks again.,
I have managed to get it all done, modded .fstab file before applying new rom but after applying the new rom and booting in, I get encryption unsuccessful. (CM9.1.0)
Is this unfortunately the end of what can be done?
Nope..

If you use this method and then do a new rom...u have to do the whole process again...each time you put a new rom on you will need to change .fstab etc..

Thanks for getting back to me. I modded the rom to have the fstab use the correct settings but I still get the issue. I've tried with Darky and with CM.
Seems I will need to stay with jw4 and the app crashes until I get a new phone at the end of the year.

Hello,
Does my phone have a dead Internal Storage ?
after i install any (stock) rom by odin , it shows up in recovery 3e:
E:failed to mount /sdcard (File exists)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount /sdcard
your storage not prepared yet, please UI menu for format and reboot actions
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0pk2
and i try to flash new rom in External SDcard following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546,
odin don't know what i want , it puts new rom in internal sd which was broken so above error display.
I have formated my external sd by MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition with 2gb ext4 and 5.592 gb fat32.
but same errors.
What should i do to flash rom in external sd.
sorry about my English , i'm not native speaker.

Do you mean that after the new rom is applied and I get encryption unsuccessful, i need to access the root of the phone somehow (presumably android commander or something similar) and change the fstab that way while it is powered on and stuck on the error message?
Or do I need to modify the zip file I want to apply before I apply it and then deploy it? If so, then I have already done this with no success.
Also, is there a way to ensure that messages and contacts don't get lost everytime the phone loses power?

Yes, means your internal storage is dead. My advice - if you can get it replaced thru warranty do that, otherwise buy one on Ebay with broken screen (or/and any other parts) but with working motherboard and swap it. Last option - sell your phone for parts and get a new one...

[Q] How to make Wildfire recognize SD partition as internal storage

Hello development community
I'm currently running an CM 9 on an unlocked, rooted Wildfire S. A while ago I created a 4 GB partition in my SD card (Ext 2 format I believe) and set link2sd to install all new apps to this partition (this is the tutorial I followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31544540 )
Anyway lately I've been having trouble installing new apps and larger updates (Facebook and DoubleTwist, namely) and my phone keeps telling me that I don't have enough memory. I tried wiping all my cache data and generally cleaning up, still no luck.
So I checked my storage usage in my settings, that's when things got interesting. My phone is telling me that I have 150 MB total of internal storage (which is how much there is without the partition), but somehow I have 229 MB used with 21.63 MB free. Doesn't take a mathematician to figure out that i can't be using 250 MB when there's only 150 MB to be had, however this 250 MB it's telling me I have is a lot less than the 4 GB of space I formatted and am linking everything too.
Does anyone know a way to get the phone to recognize the partition as internal space so it stops telling me I'm running out? I should be able to install any apps to my phone via my computer since they won't install directly from Google Play. Or is there a way I can set everything to just automatically install to the partition? That would solve my app installing problems but I might run into storage problems later on depending on how full my caches get. The more steps your give me the better, I'm still pretty new to this stuff :silly:
Thanks for any help!
PS. I checked some other threads but nothing I saw was helpful; so sorry if this is answered somewhere else, but I didn't find it.
After flashing rom did u flash the latest cronmod script

First of all, you can never use 4GB of your card as a partition Since there are some restrictions-- 100mb internal is needed for every 500mb sd-ext. We are getting around 100+ internal only for most of the ROMs , right? So you can use only around 600-700MB of the SD card as a partition.
Use min-partition tool and format your card and better make use of that card to the max. Format with ext4 (your choice) for around 700-800MB (Since 1/2/3/4GB is totally useless considering the above restriction) . After that, download and place this on SD card .
Before we go any further make sure that there are no scripts already loaded in that ROM you are using. (Apps2SD, Link2SD, etc). You need to have init.d support to make this work. This , you can verify by opening the ROM zip package and follow the path - system/etc . If you see a "init.d" folder there, then you have this support. All CM9 ROMs have this (I believe). So, now you make sure that the ROM whichever you are trying doesn't have any link2sd or apps2sd pre-loaded in it.
Then do the following.
* Put both the ROM and INT2EXT file on the SD card.
1- Goto Recovery.
2- Wipe Dalvik Cache, Battery Stats (Twice - Just to make sure )
3- Factory reset , Wipe Cache partition (Twice)
4- 'Choose zip from SD card' and select your ROM. Wait until it has finished installation.
5- Once Finished, again 'Choose zip from SD card' and flash/install the INT2EXT file that you have already placed on SD card.
6- Once done, reboot the phone. Goto settings->Apps and check if you have 'added' memory now
7- Go to recovery again and Flash GAPPS.
You are all set to Rock and Roll
Check this if you need more information
Hey, this will give you better space manipulation than the Link2SD, but still this is also limited to use, You can't fill all the internal memory. That will considerably lag your phone. Use the internal memory wisely
I guess this helps. And don't forget to thank "croniccorey" for his work
Thank you so much!!!

Thank you so much for the post! I know it's been a while since the OP, but this worked perfectly! My phone now tells me that I have 705MB of internal storage. I believe all my problems have now been solved. I literally can't say "Thank you" enough!

Cannot change Ext 2-3 or 3-4 after reformat....

Okay, so I've partitioned the SD card, but when I went to do this step.... (I'm following an XDA beginner's guide)
"Once the process is complete, select Upgrade EXT 2 to EXT 3. Do not use EXT 4 On Sense ROMS. DEFINITELY use EXT4 on newer AOSP ROMS. Your SD Card is now partitioned and you’re ready to restore your backup and flash your custom ROM so back out, go to USB-MS Toggle, select it and copy everything from the EVO Backup folder on your computer, back to your SD Card."
It didn't work... This is the error message I get... "Oops... Something went wrong! Please check the recovery log."
I think default partitions to Ext 2 and then you can upgrade. Please advise if there is something I am not doing correct.
I am using an AOSP ROM, so how to I upgrade to Ext 4?
It seems like once this is done, I am ready to carryover the backup files from my PC, wipe, and install the new ROM.
So I am reading that it is possible that my current Kernel and / or SD Card may not support going to Ext 2,3, or 4.
I'm running Android 2.3.3 (hence why I desperately need an upgrade)
Kernel Version:
2.6.35.10-g13578ee
[email protected] #1
(dated) 2011
My SD Card:
Samsung 8 GB MicroSD
Class 2
Shows 6.54 space available after Reformat and Partition with 1024 (1GB) selected for EXT2
Could either of these cause a problem for why I can't upgrade my EXT? I'm a total Noob, so I need some help with this. Thanks.

I just plugged in the phone and opened my SD folder on the computer and don't see anything in there.
Is there a way to get to the log file on the phone, in Recovery mode, per se? If not, please help!

Are your display settings on your computer set so all files, including protected system ones, will show? It may be that the file is there, but just that your explorer is not showing it.
