installing recovery - LG Optimus G Pro

Hello everyone I just had a question about recover, a little while back I had cwm on my phone but then I did a full restore and am on stock rooted kit Kat. The first time I installed the cwm recovery I used freegee, but I've seen people say that it doesn't work on the software I am on which is E98020H, can anyone confirm that it doesn't work and is there another way? Thank you.

Unless I am doing something completely wrong... it is not working for me either. I'm on E98020h and I was not even able to root with kitkat root tool. I wound up using Root Genius to root, and was able to get root access for apps like FreeGee, titanium backup, etc.. However Freegee is littered with errors. Upon opening I get an error message saying there is an "exception thrown waiting for command to finish" and then the next error window says that "your aboot is not supported by loki on software version: E98020h." After that the app seems fine, everything is there, but when I go to flash CWM-6.0.4.7 I get another error message, this time saying "There was an error running action "loki_recovery."
No clue, might just be me, but I have tried some other methods as well (including rooting, using voodoo root protector, update to e98020h, and then try freegee) but still nothing.

Loki hasn't been updated in months. I think we just have to hold tight until they update it to include the new aboot that comes with e98020h. I'm stuck at the same place. No big deal since I have root, but would be nice to get into CWM (safely) and back the phone up.

flash the CWM from this thread. At least allows you the ability to get into CWM and do backups, etc...

Here's what you do to be able to install freegee cwm recovery successfully and also obtain root.
1.) Download towelrrot app from www.towelroot.com (much appreciation to Geohot). One click and you are rooted.
2.) Download busybox from playstore. Install.
3.) Download GPRO cwm 6.0.4.4 recovery apk (look for it on the attached files area of G3 rom v 4.7 on the android section of our phone). Run app and install recovery but don't reboot afterwards.
4.)Run Freegee. It should install freegee cwm or twrp by then.

i tried this sadly freegee still getting hung on a boot error...

You're on stock Kitkat. Use GPRO_recovery.apk, after that update recovery to something newer (TWRP prefered) and voila, you're ready to go.
Or start from stock Jellybean, unlock via Freegee and update recovery. You'll get a better flashing base (smaller chances for hardware wakelocks).

Yeah I finally worked through it last night. Towel root. Gpro recovery. Then installed busy box and flashed latest twrp with flashify and got to flashing my ROMs. Hey BTW which ROM/kernel do you get the best battery life with?

I'm still on KitKat (custom build of PAC-ROM 4.4.4, with my own kernel) and I get pretty good SOT (~5h) and maybe a day-day and a half of one charge. Haven't used Lollipop ROMs much, they are too unstable for my needs (mostly problems with overheating and phone not sleeping properly) and I'm too lazy to sync repos and do a custom build, but CM12.1 with Emmanuel's kernel was OK for me for a long time. Please note, I was using older CM build (01.06.2015) because of the SIM bug which is not patched yet.

Help for a somewhat new person.

I am new with rooting my phone. I have used Rooted phones before, I followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258633 Motochopper how to. I ran into a problem. I click the superuser app that was installed onto my phone, and it tells me that "The Superuser binary (su) must be updated. Please choose an installation method. Recovery mode installation is recommended for HTC devices." I click install and it tells me there was an error. I would like to root my phone along with potentially installing CWM so that I can easily install Cyanogenmod when they release a stable verison for the S4. Also would love to install titanium backup along with some Adfree apps.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
OK, so it looks like you already have it rooted.
When super SU asks that question, dont install via CWM, tell it to just install normally.
Once you have SuperSU working, Download Rom Manager from the play store and install CWM Recovery right from within the ROM Manager app.
It will give you the option to pick between two types of CWM(ClockWorkMod). The Touch version, like its name gives you the ability to use the touch screen and not only the volume up/down + Power button.
Telling it to install normally causes it to just tell me there was an error, it also tells me it is out of date as well. Titanium Backup tells me that it cant get root access and I was never asked about it.
OK, so your phone is not rooted then.
Your going to have to try rooting it again or flashing an already rooted rom with Odin.
I just tried it again, this time it said failure after the install of the superuser.apk. I just read that one of the later updates by samsung can make it harder to root. I just got my phone and i was fully updated. What Roms, are already rooted for the S4. I am actually enjoying some of the default apps that came with the phone.
Wicked (and most ROMs that don't include the [STOCK] tag) are pre-rooted...but you'll need to ODIN a custom recovery first then flash the ROM.
If you want to stay on rooted stock, follow the steps in the "root May 7 MDL" thread to ODIN a rooted kernel, and you'll be good to go.
(You don't need root access to get a custom recovery flashed)
Basically, any of your options are pretty straightforward, but they're going to involve Odin-ing stuff.
So there isn't really a way to just root my phone without installing a custom rom?
There was before the second update, with the second update rooting got just a little bit more steps

So is there a way to keep it stock but root it? What are the other steps I would have to take. Why does Samsung not like people rooting their phones, I thought carriers were the ones that hated people rooting their phones

Are you still on the MDB firmware or have you done any over the air updates? Specifically the May 7 update which is MDL. Motochopper is specifically for then older firmware (MDB) and it won't work if you are already on the updated. MDL firmware. In which case you would have to follow these instructions to acquire root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41162041
I usually use a market app called root checker to quickly check if I do have root.
And yes you can be rooted on stock.

Root checker says no root. I believe it does have that over the air update installed. T Mobile updated it when they gave me the phone, because they thought I didn't really know anything about phones. I assume this means I have to follow another method to root my phone?
If you have the MDL update you have to root using the steps listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2268880
Easily done, just a few more steps.

This is going to sound like a dumb question but from reading all of that I need to use ODIN to install the ROOT_M919?UVUAMDL onto the phone? that should root the phone and allow me to install ROM Manager and install CWM from there right?
Also would doing this delete everything I have on my phone right now?

No, you use Odin to install one of the recoveries. You use the recovery to install the zip ROOT_M919?UVUAMD. Personally I didn't use that file. I installed the kernel in recovery and SuperSU in recovery. And no, it won't delete things on your phone.

Thank you so much, I am about to go and do this. I will use the kernel you suggested since that looks like a better option, after flashing the kernal should i reboot and just use it normally for a bit and then go to recovery and flash SuperSU?
EDIT: The steps on the thread for ODIN are for installing a rooted ROM, I am assuming its still the same steps for installing a recovery instead of a rooted ROM

Okay I didn't get any error using ODIN, however when I try and boot into CWM using Volume Up + Power it just goes to android recovery. Which doesn't have any of the options I need. Am I just booting up the wrong way, or did I do something wrong. I tried both the touch version and the non-touch version

2 options. uncheck auto reboot in Odin. When Odin is done, unplug your phone, pull your battery, then boot into recovery. Or .. when Odin is done and it reboots your phone, keep holding volume up to get to recovery.

Rooting the SG3 running stock 4.3 is notoriously difficult. CF AutoRoot may not always work. The instructions below (thanks to XDA Developer upndwn4par), however, works pretty well. The usual disclaimers ... you are trying this at your own risk etc. apply here...
Before rooting your phone, however, please check to see if rooting is really necessary. You may not need root access to install a custom or stock ROM. Custom recovery (e.g. CWM or TWRP) alone may be sufficient.

Can't load custom Recovery

Hi, I have the optimus g pro E980 and im having the following problem:
So i have a dillema with my custom recovery. I am trying to flash Beanstalk, but i had a problem with installing cwm. Rom manager's cwm an twrp wont work, it just has the android with his chest open and a red "!" triangle on him. goo manager's open recovery script says there is no recoveries found. I tried freeGee but the app wont load properly to use it. I have downloaded the madmack's updated TWRP and the modem to go with it but Idk how to install the zip on it without the custom recovery.
My root is successful as I followed the guide for the chinese root program since I had the 4.1.2 version of android. Sorry I sound nubbish, im just having trouble doing this since the rom manager failed me

Also I did a boot with KDZ and now everytime I boot it puts my phone into "All auto test - FTM mode" and I cant exit out of it
Freegee has su permissions? On mine, su denied it after I allowed it. And this made it act abnormal when trying to open it.

Yup, freegee needs su permissions, that is why it sounds like a bad root to me

I don't think ftm mode can be entered into with cwm present. I tried just now, with twrp, and could not enter into ftm.
Have you looked into using flashtools to flash stock image files? I don't know the ins and outs of that specific to this device, just an idea.

The only way to install a custom recovery on the e980 is by installing FreeGee, our boot loader is locked and the only way to bypass that is by installing FreeGee after you are rooted. You need to return back to stock using LG flashtools and start over again, once you are done with the restore, then you root and finally FreeGee, and you should be able to flash anything you like.
Hope it helps.

It worked after I did exactly this! I have a question, what does everyone normally set their core limits with the trickster mod? I read someone on the forum sets theirs on 810MHz min and 1350MHz max. I feel right now as though my idle battery is good but my active usage could be better. I'm on the beanstalk rom if it helps

[Q] How to get OTA update to take on rooted device

Device was rooted with PurpleDrake, works fine on D85110c, but I'd like the new OTA. I get the OTA notification all the time, but I can't get it to "take". It says installing, reboots and I'm still on the old one. I had Xposed installed with some modules, but uninstalled it all. Any tips on how to make the OTA work, and can I just use PurpleDrake after the OTA to re-root?
Thanks for your patience with the noobtastic post.
I am also freshly rooted with PurpleDrake on 10c with twrp installed. Because of the OTA update, I am not flashing any ROMs until I figure out what to do. I am using a G3 851 on AT&T, so I'm not sure what an update will do. Will it mess with my unlock or APN settings? I'm coming from an HTC M7, so still trying to get myself mentally sound on this device before I just go flash happy all over the place. I'd like to flash a custom rom, but weary if I should update first. I see the zone rom is for the new update, so I guess I'd have to update to run his ROM. Skydragon is still 10c I believe. Any ideas? Sorry to hijack your thread. Lol
Guys, you really should search the forums for an answer. There are numerous threads in regards to the OTA as wll as guides. Your are lucky that the OTA did not apply while rooted. If you happen to also have a custom recovery installed you could have caused yourself a bootloop and would have been stuck. Search option is your friend.
In any case, it is pretty easy to update. Use the link I provided below to install download and install the latest 10m ROM. Just make sure you have everything backed up first, as the preferred method is to wipe everything. I just completed this myself this weekend and all went smooth. Once installed, just root again with PurpleDrake. Installing the permroot appears like it fails and the window closes, but it indeed applies root. You will then just need to download SU and Busybox. Additionally if you want custom recovery, use TWRP manager from play store and install the latest 2.8.01 recovery. Again, all easy if you read the threads. Good luck

I also amd running the Tmobile 851 on AT&T. After update it's no different than what you did the first time, just setup and re-enter the appropriate APN settings. Reboot and your done / back on AT&T network.
OK I think I may be stuck. I gave my phone to wife to check something on the internet and when the notification came up for the update she accepted it. Then handed me my phone back because it got stuck on the TWRP loop. Is there anything to do to get out of this loop? I tried restore from one of my back saves without any luck. Never mind I was able to install the stock ROM in TWRP and got out of the boot loop. Trying to fix and get root and TWRP back now to restore one.

[Q] How to change ROMS?

Hoping someone on the forum can help me out. First off let me state what I'm working with:
LG G2 LS980 (Sprint)
Rooted
Using OptimusG3 V1.0 ROM
4.4.2 KitKat
Basedband: unknown
Kernel 3.4.0
Build number: KOT49I.LS980
I am a complete newbie to rooting and flashing ROMS, but I have done some homework to have a basic idea of what to do since my phone is already flashable and running a custom ROM now. (I bought the phone pre-rooted and flashed)
I would like to switch ROMS to one that is based on Lollipop and have download several different ROMS specific for the LS980, but everytime I attempt to flash one, it begins to read the ZIP file and then shortly afterwards it just fails the install and leaves my phone in the SOFT-Brick mode with the LG start screen.
I was smart enough to make a backup of my phone with TWRP so I have been restoring my phone everytime. But I want to figure out what's going on so I can flash a new ROM onto my G2. I have tried going to all the how-to forums and nothing seems to work. I know I am missing something or some step because I have the OptimusG3 ROM going, so I know I have most if not all of what I need to flash another ROM. I've used Flashify, ROM Manager, and just plain using TWRP to go into recovery and pick out the zip fill from there and flash (with the right gApps zip) and all ROMS get about 5% installed and then fail. Each time I wipe Davalik, Data, and Cache. Only thing I have never done is format, just because I fear to erase everything including my ROMS and backups. (all ROMS I dl are for the ls980 specifically)
What step am I missing or doing wrong that no new ROM will flash?

Your boot loader is fine. Which version of TWRP are you using? And lollipop Roms are aosp or cm based so they need zv8 radio.
If your using two 2.7 you will need to update to a more recent version. Blastorgator (sp) has a TWRP that is bumped and Loki for all your goodness. It is at least 2.8 something.

Thanks! You're right, I am using version 2.7 of TWRP. I'll give Blastorgator a go and see if that solves the problem.

I tried updating my TWRP as you suggested and unfortunately I went from not being able to flash ROMS to soft-bricking the phone. Now trying to boot the phone I get the LG Security Error fast load screen. Somehow the twrp upgrade didn't take and has triggered the Security Error. I can boot into Recovery and TWRP, but trying to flash a ROM or restore my backup does not get rid of the error. Per other posts I tried using the LG Mobile Support Tool to get a stock ROM on there, but no go the Tool says my phone is up to date and does nothing.
Tried re-flashing the TWRP upgrade and it claimed successful and for one reboot it was at 2.8.6.x. Tried flashing my ROMS and backup and no go again. Then strangely enough TWRP rebooted and was back to ver 2.7. Once more I'm at a loss of what to do to recover from the soft-brick. HELP!!!

Well I found instructions on how to go back to stock. As a flashing newb, do I need to re-root the device? Re-install SuperSU? What do I do next to get back into the flashing game? (on a side note, my phone was unlocked and I was using it with MetroPCS, how do I get it back to recognizing MetroPCS? It now claims there is no SIM card)

Yes, so if your on zve or less stump root should work no problem for you.
If you are of zvg then you need the one click root process.
After root in sprint development, there is an unlock thread.
Follow directions and it should get you back to working mode.

You may try this post and see if it works for you. A few posted that it worked on zvg.(lollipop)

If you want to go to lollipop, do not root out do anything else but leave it stock before you upgrade to lollipop.
You should .tot back to ZVE (and ZV8 radio), sideload the ZVG update, re-root, and do the SIM unlock found here (looks like that works).

First off, thanks for your continued help. Since I do want to go to Lollipop, preferably a custom ROM like Revolution Remix or Cyanogenmod, how would I do that without rooting first?
I am on stock still with ZV8, but I had already rooted it with IOroot before reading your reply. I could start all over with reflashing stock if that is best.

I've heard different things with the new builds. But last known and working use auto-rec KitKat. Not the lollipop version.
This will get you a recovery installed. Since you are zv8, you should be good. Just update the TWRP version to the newer build. There is a thread in g2 development. Can't remember if it is original or android of the g2. But I'll find it and post the link with an edit.
Then flash the lollipop cm or aosp based ROM. Don't forget your Google apps.
They are on 5.1 based.
