Rooting the SG3 running stock 4.3 is notoriously difficult. CF AutoRoot may not always work. The instructions below (thanks to XDA Developer upndwn4par), however, works pretty well. The usual disclaimers ... you are trying this at your own risk etc. apply here...
Before rooting your phone, however, please check to see if rooting is really necessary. You may not need root access to install a custom or stock ROM. Custom recovery (e.g. CWM or TWRP) alone may be sufficient.

I presume also you are trying to install a 4.4 based custom ROM since KitKat is not officially available for the i747?

Have you removed Knox before attempting to flash the custom ROM?
Other than that I don't have a suggestion, mostly because I have never used TWRP.

I am new with rooting my phone. I have used Rooted phones before, I followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258633 Motochopper how to. I ran into a problem. I click the superuser app that was installed onto my phone, and it tells me that "The Superuser binary (su) must be updated. Please choose an installation method. Recovery mode installation is recommended for HTC devices." I click install and it tells me there was an error. I would like to root my phone along with potentially installing CWM so that I can easily install Cyanogenmod when they release a stable verison for the S4. Also would love to install titanium backup along with some Adfree apps.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
OK, so it looks like you already have it rooted.
When super SU asks that question, dont install via CWM, tell it to just install normally.
Once you have SuperSU working, Download Rom Manager from the play store and install CWM Recovery right from within the ROM Manager app.
It will give you the option to pick between two types of CWM(ClockWorkMod). The Touch version, like its name gives you the ability to use the touch screen and not only the volume up/down + Power button.
Telling it to install normally causes it to just tell me there was an error, it also tells me it is out of date as well. Titanium Backup tells me that it cant get root access and I was never asked about it.
OK, so your phone is not rooted then.
Your going to have to try rooting it again or flashing an already rooted rom with Odin.
I just tried it again, this time it said failure after the install of the superuser.apk. I just read that one of the later updates by samsung can make it harder to root. I just got my phone and i was fully updated. What Roms, are already rooted for the S4. I am actually enjoying some of the default apps that came with the phone.
Wicked (and most ROMs that don't include the [STOCK] tag) are pre-rooted...but you'll need to ODIN a custom recovery first then flash the ROM.
If you want to stay on rooted stock, follow the steps in the "root May 7 MDL" thread to ODIN a rooted kernel, and you'll be good to go.
(You don't need root access to get a custom recovery flashed)
Basically, any of your options are pretty straightforward, but they're going to involve Odin-ing stuff.
So there isn't really a way to just root my phone without installing a custom rom?
There was before the second update, with the second update rooting got just a little bit more steps

So is there a way to keep it stock but root it? What are the other steps I would have to take. Why does Samsung not like people rooting their phones, I thought carriers were the ones that hated people rooting their phones

Are you still on the MDB firmware or have you done any over the air updates? Specifically the May 7 update which is MDL. Motochopper is specifically for then older firmware (MDB) and it won't work if you are already on the updated. MDL firmware. In which case you would have to follow these instructions to acquire root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41162041
I usually use a market app called root checker to quickly check if I do have root.
And yes you can be rooted on stock.

Root checker says no root. I believe it does have that over the air update installed. T Mobile updated it when they gave me the phone, because they thought I didn't really know anything about phones. I assume this means I have to follow another method to root my phone?
If you have the MDL update you have to root using the steps listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2268880
Easily done, just a few more steps.

This is going to sound like a dumb question but from reading all of that I need to use ODIN to install the ROOT_M919?UVUAMDL onto the phone? that should root the phone and allow me to install ROM Manager and install CWM from there right?
Also would doing this delete everything I have on my phone right now?

No, you use Odin to install one of the recoveries. You use the recovery to install the zip ROOT_M919?UVUAMD. Personally I didn't use that file. I installed the kernel in recovery and SuperSU in recovery. And no, it won't delete things on your phone.

Thank you so much, I am about to go and do this. I will use the kernel you suggested since that looks like a better option, after flashing the kernal should i reboot and just use it normally for a bit and then go to recovery and flash SuperSU?
EDIT: The steps on the thread for ODIN are for installing a rooted ROM, I am assuming its still the same steps for installing a recovery instead of a rooted ROM

Okay I didn't get any error using ODIN, however when I try and boot into CWM using Volume Up + Power it just goes to android recovery. Which doesn't have any of the options I need. 2 options. uncheck auto reboot in Odin. When Odin is done, unplug your phone, pull your battery, then boot into recovery. Or .. when Odin is done and it reboots your phone, keep holding volume up to get to recovery.

I decided to try cyanogenmod on my SGH-I747 but have had so many issues I would be happy at this point if I could just get a working phone again.
I started with a 4.3 OTA-updated phone. I rooted the phone, then tried to install the latest 10.2 ROM. I also tried 10.1. I used CWM: I would have preferred the latest version but the best I could find that was not an .img file (I used Odin) was in the 5.x range. In both cases I hit what I believe is a bootloader error ("assert failed: ... Status 7"). At this point the phone is wiped with no recourse. I attempted to install the stock boot image for the I747, but after doing so the phone will no longer boot.
EDIT: I am able to get to downloading mode. I am afraid to use it to install stock firmware b/c of a post I found here claiming that downgrading from 4.3 OTA (e.g., to 4.1) will brick the phone.

i actually had the same problem earlier today. what i did was use odin to install clockworkmod recovery. after it reboots, hold VOLUME UP and HOME at the same time. if you have a micro sd handy, download any of the two updates here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498233 place them on you sd card and in recovery format cache and factory reset/data. then highlight "install zip from sd card" or something that sounds relevant. select the zip you placed on your sd card earlier and there.
Worked, I think

That appears to be the standard tutorial for rooting/flashing. I did it anyway, even though didn't the file you had me install before already root the phone? In any event, I ran CF-root and then I attempted to install CM 10.2 and it failed: "failed to verify whole-file signature." I believe that was the first error I hit in the beginning of this exercise. Additionally, now I get an error on the welcome screen that says "Unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped."

Thanks for the suggestion. I went back to the no-KNOX file you pointed out earlier. I assume that is the same type of file as the CF-Root so I assume I don't need to install CF-root anymore after installing the no-KNOX file. So now I follow the tutorial from your second response minus the root step. I no longer get the SuperSU error. However, I still can't load a ROM. I get the same "assert failed... getprop("ro.bootloader... Status 7" that I mentioned in my first post. When I googled this in the first round, I saw several posts saying it means I had a bad bootloader. That is when I tried to flash the stock bootloader, which nearly hardbricked the phone. Do the two files you initially posted include a bootloader file?

No idea. I went ahead and tried to install the I747UCDLK3_aio.tar.md5, which I hoped was a 4.3 bootloader (don't know how you are supposed to tell). The error I got was this was another failure--this time saying the package was for d2att and this is a d2spr. My phone is definitely not a sprint phone. Some posts say I have to update the build.prop file, but I don't know how I can do that before a ROM is even installed.

Hello everyone, so AT&T updated my phone and foxfi used to work just fine for hotspot but since Android 4.3 I can't so I need to root. I've seen a few threads in this site on some roots but don't get much info about them. How can I root my GS3 running 4.3? I've never rooted in my life so I'm making sure I do this right the first time . If anyone can please help me get the proper root for my GS3. I'm not wanting all these custom roms and stuff. - Has Anyone had an update to this yet? I am having the exact same issue where several things no longer allow me the permissions I once had. At&t sent out an update that kept popping up on my screen every five minutes for like 2 days so I Finally upgraded and I do not like the new version.
- I am especially ticked that they removed the option to hide Applications now. I use my phone for work and don't need clients and coworkers having easy access to personal apps and data since I collaborate on my phone quite a bit in meetings, plane rides etc.where my phone is passed around. So any new app I try to add also requires root access to do the trick and combined with not being able to use pdanet+ or foxfi to tether I have a big need to root now. I tried to root using GalaxyS3RootATT.zip - which did work on an earlier version of 4.2 but only ended up wiping my phone after the 4.3 update (i think this was the 2nd update for the same OS version 4.3) but it did install super user. However root test fail to show that it is properly rooted. Very Frustating and VERY nervous about Bricking my phone so I want to make sure its done right. Ive only rooted a handful of times every couple of years when I get a new phone and the process seems to change constantly due to so many codes and manufacturers and models and carriers etc.
Anyway please help ASAP. Thanks

The instructions here worked like a charm after I upgraded to 4.3. Rest assured, CF auto root is compatible with the latest firmware. Just be very careful and follow the instructions meticulously.
First time rooter
Sorry if i don't understand whats going on this is the first time rooting for me.
I am trying to root my phone to be able to run 4.4 on it and have followed the steps to root it using odin3 and CF-Auto-Root but once i get back to my home page and try to use superSU I get an error message stating "Unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped." along with "Security information An application attempted to access system on your device without authorization. This attempt has been blocked".
Sorry if this is an easy fix or i left out important information but i would just like some help getting off the gound

You need to install a custom recovery in order to flash a custom ROM. You don't necessarily need root to load a custom ROM. Are you running a stock 4.3 ROM?

I have not personally put Knox on the phone but when i go into settings/security/device administrators. It lists Knox as one with an unchecked box so dose that mean its on the phone? and if so how would i go about removing it.
also if i don't necessarily need to root to load a custom ROM where could i be directed to be able to load 4.4?
Thanks!

The 4.3 OTA installs Knox without checking if you want it or not. Fortunately there are ways to remove it after the fact. Most suggestions I have seen recommend using CF-AutoRoot, updating SuperUser, and then going into SuperUser to disable Knox. You don't need root to install custom ROMs but as far as I know you need it to remove Knox. Removing Knox seems to be necessary in order to get the custom recovery required to flash custom ROMs.
|Guide|How-To| Root & Install Custom Recovery for 4.3 Update
[CWM][4.2.2/4.3/4.4] DE-SAMSUNGNIZER Script V5.0.0 - Clean all unneded Samsung Crap contains scripts to remove Samsung bloat and others that seem to just remove Knox.
I was about to offer no comment on the ROM to which you linked because it is in the Verizon forum, but then I noticed the d2lte in the description. My understanding is that d2lte is good for all US SGS3 variants. (Gummy says this in it's forum.) Maybe you can get around using a custom recovery with some ROMs, but the Gummy ROM comes as a recovery flashable zip. So, it looks like: root, remove knox, install custom recovery, flash rom.

From reading quite a few ROM threads I have learned that the updater scripts have code that indicates which devices they will work on and will cause the install to fail if you are trying to flash an incompatible ROM to a device. Sometimes these scripts have not been updated to reflect ROM compatibility with devices and editing the updater script will correct this. This is best verified in the ROM thread. Something to check for yourself before posting would be that you are using a compatible ROM version. The d2lte files should work with any of the US variants. If you downloaded one of the older files there is then the need to make sure it works with your device, unless you are confident about editing the script.
Other possible causes of your error:
1) it could be that the zip is on the external_sd and the installer expects it on the internal
2) you have a bad ROM download

Look in the development thread for a way to flash back to stock 4.3.
Root problem solved
I have an AT&T S3 SGH-i747. The problems I had with rooting was all related to Knox, unfortunately I had no way to get rid of Knox.
Please follow the web link and follow all the steps in order. The short version of the steps is you install the TWRP recovery using Odin, then boot back into recovery , install SuperSU and then Knox removal script via recovery. After that enjoy whatever custom ROM you want. I'm running the KitKat 4.4 now :good:
As a note getting to the correct download link can be a pain due to the bait and switch of the "download now" button with other shareware apps but the links provided to lead you to the correct zip files.

I have a SGHI-I747 4.3 I am wondering if I am able to root it with the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963790&nocache=1 I do not see my phone listed.
I would like to disable knox also and enable wifi tether.

CF-AutoRoot should work fine. But theres also Towelroot now, which is much, much, much easier!
After rooting with Towelroot, install SuperSU from the play store. Then open it and update the binary and disable knox.

Hello everyone I just had a question about recover, a little while back I had cwm on my phone but then I did a full restore and am on stock rooted kit Kat. The first time I installed the cwm recovery I used freegee, but I've seen people say that it doesn't work on the software I am on which is E98020H, can anyone confirm that it doesn't work and is there another way? Thank you.

Unless I am doing something completely wrong... it is not working for me either. I'm on E98020h and I was not even able to root with kitkat root tool. I wound up using Root Genius to root, and was able to get root access for apps like FreeGee, titanium backup, etc.. However Freegee is littered with errors. Upon opening I get an error message saying there is an "exception thrown waiting for command to finish" and then the next error window says that "your aboot is not supported by loki on software version: E98020h." After that the app seems fine, everything is there, but when I go to flash CWM-6.0.4.7 I get another error message, this time saying "There was an error running action "loki_recovery."
No clue, might just be me, but I have tried some other methods as well (including rooting, using voodoo root protector, update to e98020h, and then try freegee) but still nothing.

Loki hasn't been updated in months. I think we just have to hold tight until they update it to include the new aboot that comes with e98020h. I'm stuck at the same place. No big deal since I have root, but would be nice to get into CWM (safely) and back the phone up.

flash the CWM from this thread. At least allows you the ability to get into CWM and do backups, etc...

Here's what you do to be able to install freegee cwm recovery successfully and also obtain root.
1.) Download towelrrot app from www.towelroot.com (much appreciation to Geohot). One click and you are rooted.
2.) Download busybox from playstore. Install.
3.) Download GPRO cwm 6.0.4.4 recovery apk (look for it on the attached files area of G3 rom v 4.7 on the android section of our phone). Run app and install recovery but don't reboot afterwards.
4.)Run Freegee. It should install freegee cwm or twrp by then.
i tried this sadly freegee still getting hung on a boot error...

You're on stock Kitkat. Use GPRO_recovery.apk, after that update recovery to something newer (TWRP prefered) and voila, you're ready to go.
Or start from stock Jellybean, unlock via Freegee and update recovery. You'll get a better flashing base (smaller chances for hardware wakelocks).
Yeah I finally worked through it last night. Towel root. Gpro recovery. Then installed busy box and flashed latest twrp with flashify and got to flashing my ROMs. Hey BTW which ROM/kernel do you get the best battery life with?

I'm still on KitKat (custom build of PAC-ROM 4.4.4, with my own kernel) and I get pretty good SOT (~5h) and maybe a day-day and a half of one charge. Haven't used Lollipop ROMs much, they are too unstable for my needs (mostly problems with overheating and phone not sleeping properly) and I'm too lazy to sync repos and do a custom build, but CM12.1 with Emmanuel's kernel was OK for me for a long time. Please note, I was using older CM build (01.06.2015) because of the SIM bug which is not patched yet.

to run freegee you need stuck 4.1.2 android.
Device was rooted with PurpleDrake, works fine on D85110c, but I'd like the new OTA. I get the OTA notification all the time, but I can't get it to "take". It says installing, reboots and I'm still on the old one. I had Xposed installed with some modules, but uninstalled it all. Any tips on how to make the OTA work, and can I just use PurpleDrake after the OTA to re-root?
Thanks for your patience with the noobtastic post.
I am also freshly rooted with PurpleDrake on 10c with twrp installed. Because of the OTA update, I am not flashing any ROMs until I figure out what to do. I am using a G3 851 on AT&T, so I'm not sure what an update will do. Will it mess with my unlock or APN settings? I'm coming from an HTC M7, so still trying to get myself mentally sound on this device before I just go flash happy all over the place. I'd like to flash a custom rom, but weary if I should update first. I see the zone rom is for the new update, so I guess I'd have to update to run his ROM. Skydragon is still 10c I believe. Any ideas? Sorry to hijack your thread. Lol
Guys, you really should search the forums for an answer. There are numerous threads in regards to the OTA as wll as guides. Your are lucky that the OTA did not apply while rooted. If you happen to also have a custom recovery installed you could have caused yourself a bootloop and would have been stuck. Search option is your friend.
In any case, it is pretty easy to update. Use the link I provided below to install download and install the latest 10m ROM. Just make sure you have everything backed up first, as the preferred method is to wipe everything. I just completed this myself this weekend and all went smooth. Once installed, just root again with PurpleDrake. Installing the permroot appears like it fails and the window closes, but it indeed applies root. You will then just need to download SU and Busybox. Additionally if you want custom recovery, use TWRP manager from play store and install the latest 2.8.01 recovery. Again, all easy if you read the threads. Good luck

OK I think I may be stuck. I gave my phone to wife to check something on the internet and when the notification came up for the update she accepted it. Then handed me my phone back because it got stuck on the TWRP loop. Is there anything to do to get out of this loop? I tried restore from one of my back saves without any luck. Never mind I was able to install the stock ROM in TWRP and got out of the boot loop. Trying to fix and get root and TWRP back now to restore one.
