Couple questions. - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got my virgin mobile HTC desire 816 and I totally love it, but I got a couple questions about it. I noticed that when I had it sitting on my nightstand, and I got a message I picked it up and the screen woke. It seems to only work when the phone is horizontal. The weird thing is I cannot find any setting for it. Has anybody else noticed this feature? Also, I know on virgin mobile website it claims the 816 has gorilla glass 2. Is that true? Thanks guys.

Major problems with dropping calls!

First off, let me say that having been a WinMob guy for the past 4 years, this phone has been a revelation in good design. I love it.
The ONLY thing that is impacting my experience with this handset is its CONSTANT habit of dropping calls! This usually happens completely at random, sometimes 1 minute into a call, sometimes 10 minutes into one - happens with both poor service and full bar service.
Could it have anything to do with HSDPA being active during voice calls?? Haven't had this issue with any other phones before and I certainly don't want to have to return it for a fix.
Any help with this would be very greatly appreciated!!
I've experience it a few times, put it down to poor T-Mobile coverage so far.
Happens every call with me, really can't figure out what I can do to fix it. Just hope it's not a hardware fault.
Has any one had any similar experiences with their handsets? Or alternatively, any ideas on how to fix the issue?
Thanks, just want to know so I can decide whether to take it back or not...
Guys, any help with this?
Well, I've never had this problem until today when I dropped a call twice. Had full bars. Hmmm. (T-mobile in case it's a network prob btw)
Have you had a look on the T-Mo Android forum ?

I've not looked there for sometime now.
I've been using it in Switzerland for a week, and have had no dropped calls whatsoever, so i'm assuming it's something to do with T Mobile UK
(Just for the benefit of any one else who will read this, I'm on O2.)
Hey guys, might have found a fix for this -
1. Turn phone off
2. Remove SIM + battery
3. Put battery back in without SIM, turn handset on and leave for 3 or so mins.
4. Turn off, + put SIM back in w/ battery as well
5. Change Network data setting to receive WCDMA only
Seems to have worked, but haven't tested extensively.
Btw, thanks for the t-mobile forums link, did help.
ive also had the same issue. had the same problem on my hero on 3 before I got my desire which is now on Orange and still the dame problem. also g1 on 3 had same problem. must be a problem on Android or with data and voice at same time.

I thinks it's more the phone since I'm AT&T with a Telus Desire.
This happens to me too with 2-4 bars. I thought it was my cheek hitting the End Call but it happens with BT too.
Maybe I've just been spoiled with Nokia and Motorola's reception...
It happened in Taiwan before. It's sim card's fault. We replaced our cards with new ones and problems are solved.

No HTC seal on box, have I been given a refurbished or returned unit?

Just received my desire from Devicewire, not on contract but sim free version. I noticed that there was no HTC seal on the bottom of the box, does this mean I have been given a returned phone? I also noticed there is a virgin media widget? Also homepage on the browser is virgin media?
Apart from a tiny bubble in the glass (bottom left, you can hardly notice it) and a back cover that doesn't fit snug, everything else is fine.
My concern is that I will have problems when upgrading the firmware due to some virgin media connection? For example will I only be able to upgrade the firmware with VM firmware?
if you look around on this site you'll see that the general consensus is that due to stock shortages, HTC shipped some phones that were meant to be locked by Virgin, but in fact are still unlocked phones. I don't have one myself, but you shouldn't have any issues with it
that being said, I'd be a bit off-put by that, couldn't stand looking at a branding if I didn't buy it that way in the first place. I mean, the phones are usually knocked down in price due to branding and contract deals..
I'd send it back and demand an unbranded one, but you may have to wait.

oh yeah, the seal...
sounds to me like someone opened your box for one reason it another, I'd find out why...

I got a completely unlocked unbraded one from superetrader.co.uk and it didn't have a seal on, but the seal was inside the box ready to be used. So don't worry about not having a seal
mine was also unbranded, etc... I had a seal on the box AS WELL as inside the box.
maybe just confusion in the HTC packing plant at the moment ...

thanks guys for the info. It looks like they just didnt apply a seal at the factory, maybe they were destined for a carrier who adds some doc into the box and then applies their own seal.
I have one of the phones with Virgin branding, too, also from devicewire. I emailed them about it and they assured me it came direct from HTC themselves.
So I emailed HTC and they said it was a firmware bug, where using a sim on the t-mobile network, as virgin is, produces this branding. they assured me the phone is fully sim free and won't have any trouble being updated. I posted the email in the thread about the April 7th phones. i'll dig it up when I'm next on my pc.
I'm assuming you're on t-mobile?

Arrhhh, very interesting. Thanks for the heads up on that. I have used devicewire many times and never had a problem with them, so I thought it was a bit unusual for them.
Mine came without a seal aswell. The seal was in the box unused though.
yes I'm on T-Mobile

In case you hadn't seen it yet, here's my post from the other thread:
-----------
For anyone that is actually curious, I emailed HTC about the rogue Virgin Media branding on mine:
Hi,
I ordered a SIM free HTC Desire from devicewire.com, and while the phone itself is just fine, I noticed some branding for Virgin Media. There was a shortcut on the homescreen (I assume to the website but I deleted it), the browser's homepage was set to Virgin Media and there is a Virgin Media scene that I can't delete. Devicewire assure me that the phone is a SIM free unit delivered directly from HTC so I was wondering if you had any idea as to why this branding is there?
More importantly, I'd like to confirm that this branding won't affect my ability to update the phone with HTC supplied firmware upgrades.
I look forward to hearing your comments.

And here's their reply:
This is normal. There is a very minor bug in the generic rom in that whenever it sees a SIM from a netork that uses the T-mobile network (T-Mobile, Virgin, Fresh etc) it creates that virgin link and scene.
this will be fixed in the update so it is nothing to worry about. It is definitely a SIM free device you have.
Best regards,

So, assuming that's accurate I guess it's mystery solved!

When I bought my Touch HD from the carphone warehouse it was unbranded and didnt have the seal. That was in the box. I was told that is how HTC distribute them. It was/is so that networks can brand them and then apply the seal.
Im not sure if thats right or wrong but it was covered by warranty.

Desire seems half locked...?

Hey there guys,
firstly i would like to apologise if this has been asked before, but i have indeed tried many things in the forums and nothing is working..
i have just purchased a telstra branded HTC desire [outright] 2 days ago from JB HIFI, the salesman said its unlocked and i assumed its all good.
I can definately send/recieve calls and sms, BUT i cannot connect to the net for browsing unless im at home in my wifi area... i dont get it.. its like the device is a half locked phone, calls/sms -ok, internet-no only to telstra
i have a vodafone [prepaid sim] and i was able to browse and recieve emails and so on with my nokia e63 on prepaid with no issue whatsoever. This is my first android phone and im feeling a little lost/stumped with it and taken advantage of with half truths from the salesman at JB HIFI. Im sure they would know about this, i did make it clear and stress out it is a non telstra sim and that its prepaid.
if anyone can kindly assist me with a post or email, with a brief step by step instruction on how you got it working i would really appreciate it. this is indeed all new to me.
thankyou kindly
Please check do you have an apn in wireless settings, if not, add one

[Q] Can I Use A LCD/Digitizer from a GSM Rhodium on CDMA Rhodium?

Hello All,
I cracked my screen on my sprint Touch Pro 2 CDMA Rhodium World, but i have a GSM Rhodium for parts, are the screens/digitizers compatible? I have read they are and then that they are not? Anyone have first hand knowledge about this?
Thank in advance
cheers,
disco
Well I Tried it...
Howdy Everyone,
I hate to be "one of those peeps" who answers there own questions, but I this afternoon turned out pretty boring and I figured the phone was dead anyway, LOL!
I tried the swap I took a LCD and digitizer from an AT&T GSM only Rhodium and swapped it for the cracked lcd and digitizer in my Rhodium World (sprint HTC Touch Pro 2).
so far so good, it booted up and acting normal, but it only been like 5 minutes, lol, I will keep you posted.
cheers,
disco
hi there read that you replaced tp2 cdma lcd with at&t gsm one. i am facing same problem my verizon tp2 need replacement of digitizer and lcd hows your one going on
OOOHH!! I posted a thread asking this SAME EXACT question for no reason! Took me some googling to find this.
So, tell, tell! hows it working so far?? I'm eye-balling an AT&T Digitizer+LCD on eBay for my Sprint phone, and don't know if i should go for it!
Every part should work fine, mix n match. Except for 3G which pertains to hardware.

are you using a call blocker? I was getting weird issues when using root call blocker. I had to uninstall it, had read from the app devs they are working on the problem

mine is still stock, but I only had problems after I updated 2-3 days ago
had really great signal before upgrade... havent tried restoring fabric settings, but am searching for custom rom, and will try that out
Already happened to me three times where suddenly "preparing sim card" appears and I lose signal. Had to hard reset all the time. Unfortunately, htc shops here in the Philippines are crap. They say they have to send it to service center even if the phone is a week old. For what? So they open it up? I don't want to have a week old phone opened and fixed. I want a replacement.
Have the phone for 2 week now, and today i also faced this problem for the first time T_T (running stock 1.28)
Just great, first the yellow spots that didn't went away and now this problem on top of it ?
I hope it was a coincidence and hope i won't get worse.
I had my microSIM replaced and so far, crossing my fingers, signal has been full almost all the time. I just had the original SIM cut before, so I hope that was just the problem.
I've read about sim cards been cut to micro sim been a possible cause.

Similar fault here with factory micro Sim

In Slovenia one carrier has this problem. Only SIM cards older than 2 years work so it is a SIM problem. When I asked them about when they will solve this they told me it's HTC's problem and that HTC is working on the problem. Maybe the next update will fix it. SIM cards of other carriers work ok. So if you can, try cards from other carriers. If anyone knows how to fix this I'd be grateful. I don't want to switch my carrier because other two's 3G network is [email protected]
