[Q] Android 4.4.3 Manual Camera Mode Slow - T-Mobile HTC One (M8)

My phone is fully stock and has never been rooted. I updated to 4.4.3 a few days ago, and notice the manual mode in the camera is slow. Even if I use the fastest shutter speed, it takes a few seconds to take a picture. Auto mode is quick as usual. Anybody have a solution?

I'm glad I'm not alone with this one. Hopefully there will be a fix for this. I deleted the app data. It didn't do anything

Well you are not alone.
In the topic regarding the pics taken with the M8 we were discussing about the fact that now you can't see anymore what you shoot when using 4 second shutter speed (very annoying ) and also I've noticed like you that now in manual mode it's incredible slow.
I don't know I'd we are in the right place to discuss this matter...Personally I'm upset because I don't understand why they did this mess. I'm not fan of the UltraPixel camera and neither a fanboy, so I get used to the m8 camera, but now with this change HTC left me very disappointed.
I don't think they will revert back to the old camera...For them this is an improvement...

Man, that's crazy. The only improvement the camera needed was HDR mode (I use the lock focus trick, but I wish that wasn't needed), and removing the purple fringing if that was possible to fix in the software. Oh, if HTC added a fast shutter priority mode, that would have been nice.
But yes, they need to fix manual mode.

{REQ] a very simple and FAST camera

the problem with the default x1 camera application:
-very big application with very slow startup time
-very slow interface
-require too many clicks to change the mode or the settings
now im not asking to make a full fledged camera application as that would take too much time. i am asking for a very simple and lightwaight camera application that can simply start right away into sports mode with infinite focus and flash as this seems like the quickest and most practical
shooting mode on our X1. or simply start to the last used mode in the SE camera app
i just want to have a very quick way to to take good pics.
on my old 2003 magican it takes me only 2-3 seconds to quickly start the application and take the first pic. on the xperia it takes no less the a ridicoulus 7 seconds because of the camera application.
i find the rhodium's camera to be quick and good quality.. but when there is light sometime could get overexposed lock until u take another pic.. but definitely heaps faster than SE camera.. drawback also is u cant use the camera button to use rhodium..
maybe someone can do a quick one by porting one of the old apps like the ones that come with the htc wizard/magican. these cameras apps are very small and they startup in a second
Actually I think if one want a 'simple' camera, get a 'simple phone'!
For me, I would like a camera that WORKS 100%! So whatever the features, as long as they work fast and correct, that is what I want!

you are TOTALLY missing the point. what i am proposing is in not to replace the camera but to have an additional one that can start and take a good pic in about 2 seconds instead of about 7 seconds right now
this would greatly increase the practicality and usefulness of the camera
Aha.... you want a 2nd(!) camera because of a 5 second difference....!
Well, as for me, I want a camera that works and records without pixelation, etc. as the current one does!
I'm with the GRIZZ. 5 seconds often makes all the difference, especially when you have bought a phone specifically so that you can have a decent camera on you at all times.
A lightweight camera app would be fantastic but I suspect it would take some pretty fancy programming to make work.

im not sure about that our xperia runs the 'HD or rhodium cameras fine. also the very old imate kjam runs the relativly new touch viva camera on some of the new cooked roms.
how hard can it be to to simply port a very small and old camera application like the one that comes with the magican or wizard.
defenatly worth a try but unfortunatly im no good at programing or even hacking. anybody willing to give this a shot?

why are you expecting it to be pixely or blury. its using the same hardware at as the SE camera application the end of the day. if the app boots to the sport mode with infinite focus (the faststest and best mode SE camera does anyway)it should be able to take very good pics. infact you will be able to take better pics because you will now be able to take 3 pics in the same time that normally takes you 1 picture with the default camera
of course the ultimite solution is for sony to make a much faster camera but i wouldnt hold my breath for that. their newer camera application with gps and autoflash is even slower than the original application which was also slow
i say we make a proof of concept first before we judge the practicality of this.
I totally agree on the importance of speed on phone camera's. The main reason to have one on a phone is to take swift pictures on the fly when you don't have a digital camera at hand but want to capture the moment.
In my humble opinion, if you want super quality pictures, get a digital camera, thats what they're for. On a phone i prefer speed rather than quality. (not saying Xperia doesnt take decent pictures (; )
In new custom ROMs (as in mine, check sig) the cam takes only 2secs to start and focus is very fast! I don't know how the R3A Cam behaves if used as cab...but cooked in it is very fast!!

2 seconds to get a picture taken is more than what i am asking for. and if the default focus is set to infinite it should take even less (or even no) time for focus
currnty its taking me about 7 seconds to be able to take a picture on Udk's rom
ill go and test your rom

Otherwise, shouldn't there be a cab floating around from one of the simpler HTC camera apps? Why not just try one of those?
Someone could also experiment with Speedbooster 2 and assign the camera to top priority. I would but I don't have it.

Yes, I think that would work.
You only need to improve the speed of camera.exe or the name of the camera process, and it should go faster.
The good thing is that the trial version allows you to control one task, so this is exactly what you need.
Cab here.

Doesn't work on my device... not sure why. It loaded the 1st time but then never again, even after reinstalls. Strange...
flash one of itjes roms...
they contain the htc topaz/rhodium camera...
it takes pictures instantly and is the same quality as the stock camera
i flashed so many roms and while the speed of the startup and taking the first picture is not too bad, its still much slower than what can be achived if it was a simpler & lighter application.
the fastest i managed to get was about 5 seconds on the rohdium camera
And how fast would that be if you increase the .exe process of the camera to maximum priority?
I'm using a diamond and I'm happy with the default camera speed.

Re. camera restarting phone - it's been reported that when on autobrightness, the camera will reboot the phone sometimes. Using an alternative camera app (like Camera 360 for instance), or not using autobrightness for the display, will help.
I also had this problem, and since switching camera apps it hasn't happened.

One more question: how to turn on Time Stamp when I'm taking photo?

dawpuc, I've your same problem.
I've tried to change some radios and rils, but the problem remains.
I don't want to use an alternative camera app, because I like the default app.
I also would like to continue to use the autobrightness utility, because I need it.
Can anyone help me?
P.S.: do you know how can I add the timestamp to my photos directly on the photo in one of the corners?
Why would anyone want time stamps?
On a digital camera, it is the very first thing I turn off.

Hi, I have the same problem using Insertcoin CM7 V1.1.2 . The problem has gotten worse since Insertcoin 1.1.1. Back then only the camera would crash.
Since updating to Insertcoin 1.1.2 the camera freezes the whole phone. I have to take the battery out to reboot manually.
I've used a card gparted with ext3 and ext4 both.
At one point the camera kept working but images were not saved properly. Windows then detected problems with the card and some images were placed in the found folder during the check.
The crashes also happen with the separate Sense 3 camera zip linked on Insertcoin's blog. To be honest that one does not look different from the bundled camera and I have the idea that the problems started with the Sense 3 camera.
Hope this makes more people aware of the issue and perhaps attracts the attention of a dev.

LG Camera takes ages to save the photo and sometimes losses it

I've noticed if you snap a photo with LG Camera app and immediately press the back button or switch off the screen, the photograph is not going to be saved and you will loose it. You really need to wait until you see a preview of it in a circle on the right side.
And that time can be up to 2-3 seconds, which is really annoying.
Native google camera doesn't have this bug.
Has anyone else experienced such behavior?

No problem here...... Just tried it.
If I snap and immediately press the back button it quits the camera app but if I go back into the app the thumbnail of the shot is there.
So no, my G3 takes the shot and saves immediately.

That's why it takes a while.. HDRs don't render instantly and need some time to process. The reason it doesn't save when you back out is because it's still taking pictures.

So, I understand that, but why does it need to discard the photo if I close it too fast ? Can't it just schedule the processing in the background like Google camera does ?
With Google camera if it is in HDR mode and I switch off the screen immediately after taking a picture, the photo will still be saved.

I believe it's because the way HDR works is it takes multiple pictures at different exposures and puts them together so maybe the lg camera takes the pictures more slowly and you're quitting it while the shutter is still open?

What is the point of quitting camera app immediately after making a shot? I think you probably want something that is nonexistent. Shoot with your Google camera if you in so desperate need to quit camera app after each shot. What else to advice

As I said before, a google camera app doesn't have this problem. It produces hdr fine, even if you close the app immediately.
Obviously you gonna ask why am I not using it. I find that lg camera produces better results in HDR mode.
I usually don't reply to semi trolly post but I just took an HDR and instantly hit the back button and it doesn't save. (Of course) but I did the same thing and waited MAYBE a second maybe less and the photo finished processing and saved even though I backed out.
@op does the phone close when you take a picture or are you just intentionally hiring the back button that quickly on purpose? I literally had to try to NOT take a picture to keep it from processing. In just curious why someone would back out of taking a picture each time so fast. Well an HDR anyway

I presume that LG camera made that behaviour intended, programmers decided that if back or home buttons pressed immediately after pic is shot then use decided not to save picture so camera stops processing completely and doesn't save photo on memory. I think it is not problem it is a feature.

1. I do not talk nonsense especially when photography is the subject.
2. My previous phone was a Z2 which I would hardly call inferior.
3. If you wish to take a non standard photo then you also have to allow the processor time to complete it's action. As such 3 seconds (which by the way it is nothing like this on my G3) is adequate.
4. What gives you the right to insult any user. All that was given to you was an example of a waiting period prior to doing something else. In no way did that give you the right to be offensive.

Check out the below article, explains the functions and features.
What is it you're trying to do exactly and what happens?
http://www.htc.com/uk/support/htc-one-m8/howto/473767.html
Actually it is just saying that "duo effects is unavailable for this image"
For every image I take.
I know what are the procedure to take photos for duo effects so thr is no problem in that.
Duo effects are not compatible with manual camera settings. Its likely that you changed some minor & inconspicuous thing that's preventing you from applying duo effects.
Try the following:
- Clear the camera app settings.
- Make sure you don't change any setting, not even the flash.
- Make sure your fingers aren't blocking the depth sensor, and that its clean from greese (a simple wipe will do)
- Test drive the camera and the gallery for duo effects.
Cheers

We're still not ruling out the software side. So, next step: clear data + cache for Gallery, since its responsible for using the depth sensor data to apply effects. Then, when that fails, you still have the tedious task of hard resetting. Then its either a bad rom flash or hardware fault

What about resetting the camera app settings to default?
The option is on the settings menu when in the camera app itself. Do that then just open the camera and take a normal photo without changing any settings and try editing it from the gallery app.
These options need to be set so that duo effects can be used:
Scene Auto
Flash Off
Filters None
Aspect ratio Wide 16:9
Zooming Zoom slider should be at the minimum zoom level.
Continuous shooting Not supported

[Q] Defective Device??? Not sure.....but I do have a big problem!

Any Camera app errors when switched to front facing camera. Snapchat also become unresponsive when switched to front facing camera. After many months of trying to figure out why, I've come to the conclusion that I must not have a front facing camera! I found this ridiculous since the G3 was advertised with one and even states on the T-Mobile site that it has one. I gave up on continuously clearing the app's cache and switched to google camera. (Its easier to switch to front camera on stock app than google cam) so as long as I didn't switch into the front camera the app worked fine and pictures with the rear camera are beautiful! I don't even get the blueish tint that many others get. After the lollipop update I can't even access my camera apps without them erroring or becoming unresponsive. Why would I be having so many troubles with a much anticipated cell phone that I tried very hard to attain? I would absotutelylutely love some help with this! I kinda need this phone to last me in good condition throughout college. Any and all help would be appreciated!
Thank you.

Why would I be having so many troubles with a much anticipated cell phone that I tried very hard to attain? I would absotutelylutely love some help with this! I kinda need this phone to last me in good condition throughout college. Any and all help would be appreciated!
Thank you.

No, not yet. I wanted to see what someone here on XDA would know about it first. Maybe if rooting would be a good idea? But yeah I see what you're saying. I should probably check with T-Mobile.
