Hello folks,
I recently purchased a HTC one M8 and it is currently running 5.01 (Sense 6.0) and I would like to change to the GPE
I'm wondering if this is possible and if anyone could offer any help for someone who hasn't done this before? I am a former BlackBerry and iPhone user! (This is my first Android)

Yes you can but there are a number of steps first. It depends on whether you want the full GPE conversion which in effect makes your phone a GPE or just a rom.
You will need to unlock the bootloader, root and s-off.
Have a read through this from @vomer, it's a great guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
Then you can take a look here for the full GPE.

Most of all PLEASE READ, don't take shortcuts and ask if you need help before you do anything.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I followed the posts instructions and was able to root my phone successfully. Much appreciated.
I now have a question I'm hoping someone can help me with.
For S-Off, it says:
SunShine is our bootloader unlock/s-off tool for Motorola and HTC phones. We currently support most HTC phones, and Moto X (2013), MotoG (2013) and Droid Maxx/Mini/Ultra. All users are supported up to 4.4.3, and some users may have success on 4.4.4. Our planned 3.0 release will add support for HTC devices on 4.4.4 and 5.0.X.
Which makes me wonder whether it will work on my device, since I am running 5.0.1

Ok, I installed it and ran the tests and it says it's incompatible. ****ing great.
Is there a way to regress back to 4 and then S-off?
I cant Help but Personally I think you are lucky, I went from sense 4.4.4 to GPE 5.0.1 using sunshine to get s-off, it's not that great, sense is FAR better IMO.
Also I think I've now bricked my phone trying to go back to sense. :crying:

Not without S-OFF...
I apologize if this is explained elsewhere, did a search but not coming up with much:
I'm somewhat new to Android rooting. I have a Verizon M8 that was on 4.4.4. I installed Sunshine 3.02, got root no problem, TWRP installed with no issues, SU installed fine. I tried to run a few of the Lollipop ROMs but they would not run, I jut got returned to TWRP. (Some, like ViperOneM8 run fine). According to a post in another thread, I also need to update the kernel to get it to work with these newer ROMs.
My question is: what now? There's a section on XDA for Kernels but they all appear to be custom kernels, the ROM I want to use (Android Revolution) says that using the stock kernel is best. How do I find these kernels and how do I figure out which one to use?
Anyone willing to give me the short version of when I would need a new kernel and why?
Thanks for any help!
You need to update to Lollipop firmware.
You should also make sure you stick to ROMs that specifically support the Verizon variant (if you are not doing so already) as its a CDMA variant, which is different hardware from most other (GSM) versions.
I accidentally forgot to make a backup before flashing a new ROM and now I'm stuck with no ROM! Please help if you can. Here's my phone's info:
HTC One M9 (Telus Canadian phone) Unlocked with S-ON.
Rooted with SuperSU and TWRP v2.8.7.0.
Currently, I only have access to fastboot and TWRP. I tried flashing Revolution HD and Viper and both of them install just fine, but right after installation, my phone boots to the bootloader and will not boot to the system no mater what I do. I tried going back to full-stock but I think I need S-Off for that which I have no clue how to do with no ROM. Plus fastboot won't even show me what my CID/MID numbers are to download the right stuff for my phone if I wanna go back to stock.
I just need a ROM to work. I don't care which one. What are my options? Is there a way unbrick my phone?
Thanks in advance!
Flash an lollipop ROM and all will be fine, you can't use MM without MM firmware
Powered by SkyDragon ROM

Marshmallow Firmware is what you would need to run latest rom. You could pay $25 and use sunshine to make yourself s-off and flash the latest marshmallow Firmware.

Thanks to you, now I have a ROM
But what's a near-stock Lollipop ROM you'd recommend? Because I just installed Candy5 and Sunshine didn't like it for being too far from stock.

For the original look you get when you buy it,I'd go with leedroid rom. For AOSP I'd go with slimroms or candy.
FYI, you can install a Marshmallow rom with firmware 2.1x when AOSP only. I tried a Cyanogenmod and was working perfectly with actual nightlies.
But for Sense rom, you will have to install firmware 3.x
Thank you guys for your help! @BR7fan you're a real life saver! Just a quick update:
I managed to get S-Off and now I guess I have to wait until firmware 3.x is released for Canadian phones as I could not get it on the HTC website as of yet. @gortys I ran Cyanogenmod all day today and got annoyed with the WiFi drops. It happens so frequently and as I understand, there's no stable build for the M9 yet. So I'm taking @BR7fan's advice and going with LeeDroid for now. Thanks for pointing out that I can get Marshmallow ROM's with my old firmware.

It's true that wifi isn't as responsive as with a Sense rom. I am actually running Android Revolution HD (Lollipop 5.1) with Elementalx kernel and I'd say that Sense rom are quite always more optimized. Waiting for official OTA to firmware 3.x to flash their marshmallow version of the rom.
Patience for all!!

Looks like the old Lollipop based LeeDroid has been taken down. I have a backup of it on my phone though. I'm uploading it to Google Drive right now but it's a 2 GB file so it won't be ready till tomorrow. I hope you find something else in the meantime, but if you didn't, check your inbox tomorrow, I'll share the link with you so you can download it.
Thanks, i'll be waiting

Hello guys,
i'm an owner of HTC one M8, with unlocked bootloader from htcdev but with S-ON.
I just want to go back to stock rom, because every custom rom i try has some issues (battery life mainly too short! I dont know if this is because of firmware, i
dont know how to update it or even how to see what is my one now).
But, the only guides i see are with S-OFF devices. Is this possible to to it with s-on?
Also, i would be s-off if there is a still working method, i've seen firewater one doesnt work anymore so there are no other solutions.
EDIT: at least guys, can you tell me how to check and/or update my firmware?
You post this on wrong section .. should be in Q&A ... I'm asking a mod to move this thread to Q&A
Read this thread, it is for both S-On and S-Off to get back to stock - http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
First thing to check is fastboot getvar all result (delete serial & imei no.) then we will know what you need to do
Try MIUI7 rom

listen you can try MIUI based rom for htc it have great battery backup compare to the other marshmallow based roms,
so you first try miui rom(4.4.4) for htc , it have some bugs like google text to speech isnt working but battery backup is awesome. rom is stable though. and you cannot rollback to stock using ruu when your device is S-ON , use sunshine for S-OFF, lol pay $25

Ok i would like to not pay lel.
THE PROBLEM in using custom roms is, i think, the firmware, because i just flashed trough fastboot the roms, without updating any firmware.
I tryed Android revolution HD and Skydragon but booth had battery problems, i mean the battery was going down too quickly also with screen off (from stats, in 6 hours i say 3 hours deep sleep, 3 hours 300 mhz cpu so it didnt "relax"!
I really want top say thanks to ckpv5 that helped me in PM's and linked me his own guide to restore to stock rom, it worked and it's all perfect! Thanks man!
Just a last question: now i have the stock htc one rom, so i'm doing OTA's. This means my firmware is automatically updated with them?
So if in future i want to install a custom rom MM based, i won't need to flash firmware?
Yes firmware is updated with the OTA .. after the latest OTA 6.12.401.4, you can install latest TWRP and install MM custom ROMs .. no need firmware update anymore
Very well, thanks mate.
for the moment i'll leave the stock rom.
I will use a MM custom rom when they will be based on official MM rom for htc one m8, and not porting from M9/A9

There have been MM based Sense custom ROMs since before the new year (Viper, Skydragon Sense, Wolla, ARHD).
S.ROM is the only A9 port.
I bought a used M8 for the price of the M7, it had a locked bootloader, modified 1111111 CID and S-OFF, I updated it manually to MM 6.0 Verizon after installing TWRP
My Questions are
- Can I flash non-Verizon ROMs like an unlocked M8?
- Do you advise unlocking the bootloader as well? Through which means?
- Do you prefer CM14 over Sense 8/7, I love Sense put CM14 looks great! Is S-team/ICE/Lee/Venom ROM more stable than CM14?

The Verizon is known as a "CDMA" version (works on Verizon's CDMA voice network, as well as GSM) versus most other "GSM" versions of the M8.
This means you can install most ROMs meant for the M8, however, you would need to flash the proper kernel to get it working. Or stick to ROMs which specifically support Verizon M8.

Since your intent is to flash custom ROMs, its not a question of whether we advise it or not; you must unlock the bootloader in order to install custom recovery (needed to flash custom ROMs).

CM14 is in alpha. There will be bugs. Can't say firsthand, but another member stated nothing major is broken.
Sense based ROMs take official ROM, and tweak it. Generally speaking, this will be more stable than an alpha ROM like CM14.
