I apologize if this is explained elsewhere, did a search but not coming up with much:
I'm somewhat new to Android rooting. I have a Verizon M8 that was on 4.4.4. I installed Sunshine 3.02, got root no problem, TWRP installed with no issues, SU installed fine. I tried to run a few of the Lollipop ROMs but they would not run, I jut got returned to TWRP. (Some, like ViperOneM8 run fine). According to a post in another thread, I also need to update the kernel to get it to work with these newer ROMs.
My question is: what now? There's a section on XDA for Kernels but they all appear to be custom kernels, the ROM I want to use (Android Revolution) says that using the stock kernel is best. How do I find these kernels and how do I figure out which one to use?
Anyone willing to give me the short version of when I would need a new kernel and why?
Thanks for any help!
You need to update to Lollipop firmware.
You should also make sure you stick to ROMs that specifically support the Verizon variant (if you are not doing so already) as its a CDMA variant, which is different hardware from most other (GSM) versions.

Sorry if this is a noob question but I did quite a bit of searching and could not find anything.
Is it possible to install stock google roms on a DZ? I would really like to install the latest version then have it update itself by OTA. My phone is rooted and currently running Cyanogen Mod 7.1.
Thanks!
Id stick with cm7 from my personal experience its close to stock android Rome and it runs remarkably well

Yes, it is possible to run stock android roms on a DZ, there are several different variants out there right now. Just for example there's virtuous g-lite (look in the dev section or on virtuous' homepage) which is currently on version 2.3.5 I believe. A more up-to-date rom seems to be this one: 2.3.7 (please read the op, some issues still remain).
Though, as far as I know, you will not be able to receive OTAs as these are pushed to your phone by your carrier. If you want to receive OTAs on a DZ you will have to revert back to a stock sense rom.
Any ROM that works on the G2 works on the Desire Z (as long as you are rooted and S-Off, which you obviously are if you are on CM7). So if you want, just go to the Developement section and you will find pre-rooted versions of the G2 AOSP ("stock Google") ROMs. But make sure the ROM is pre-rooted. If you install an "official" ROM that is not pre-rooted, you will lose root, and need to go through the whole process again.
So here is a question that I cannot find the answer to. If a ROM like Android Revolution HD is based off the 1.29.401.12 Firmware and I have a 1.29.707.11 based phone, can I install the ROM? I know I would have to unlock and install a custom recovery, but is it possible? I ask because I thought I read somewhere you cant mix firmware updates (ie x.xx.401.xx and x.xx.707.xx) without S-Off or it would cause problems.
Thanks in advance!!

There should be no problem to install latest ARHD ROM. I did it many times coming from stock with different numbers. Any way most of your stock files are reflashed by ROM files. ARHD is universal ROM for any HOX Internatioanal versions.
Since you are replacing the whole firmware, the version of the one you are replacing should not matter.
However, make sure that the new ROM has support for your specific hardware!

Thanks, I shall try the ROM this weekend or next!!
Hi there.
I have the Huawei Acsend p6 phone, i have some rom of our cellular carrier, i'm not sure if it's custom or official rom with some minor changes. anyway, i can see that the build is "b130sp03".
i want to be at kitkat 4.4.2 with a good custom rom (one of the reasons i want custom is i not sure if my ver is official or not). the thing is: i'm new in this, and i don't know how i get from here to there.
i see some custom roms here, and each rom says you must have kitkat installed, or you must have this build installed before... so i go to the mentioned build, and then i see you must have that build before you install it... so i really don't know where to start and what is the right upgrade path for me.
can someone instruct me how to burn new custom rom from where i stand, and which builds (with links) i need to install after that in order to get to 4.4.2. Thanks a lot!
oh yeah. i rooted my devices. and install touch CWM
noobie question - after rooting, how do i get the latest "unbloated" version ?
noobie question -
So I finally rooted my phone today because I got sick of looking at all the AT&T Bloatware (and also being unable to update my phone since I use it on t-mobile)
after rooting, how do i get the latest "unbloated" software version ? 4.4.4 please, no lollipop until they fix all the bugs.
Can someone direct me to a step by step process of putting (flashing?) the official HTC software (ROM?)
Thanks

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 5.0 is official and fully working on Sprint. I thought that's what the newer Verizon 5.0 Sense custom ROMs were based on. I'm on Verizon so I don't go milling about the Sprint forum, but I'd imagine there'd be a debloated stock or lightly modified ROM out there. If you're just unlocked and not s-off you'd need to flash the boot.img separately, but the ROM thread or a help thread should explain how that works of you're unfamiliar.
Sorry to be that guy but is there a thread somewhere that has some kind of list as to which phone these roms work on.
I flashed my phone about a year ago and it seemed like it was very model specific. Maybe thats not the case anymore but it seems like it would be very helpful to have a thread dedicated to it.
Thanks
I have a tmobile version btw.
I'm not sure what you're talking about. Except for Maximus HD all custom roms I know supported and still support all variants of the M9.
Some 3.x firmwares required you to either flash a custom kernel or the stock boot.img alongside a custom rom. Nonetheless, they were usable on every variant (except for Maximus HD).
