HTC Desire overheating

My HTC Desire has a serious issue with battery life. Although I shut down most programs and connections, the battery lasts about 3 hours only. Also I have noticed that the phone gets quite hot on the back by the micro SD card. Do you think that my phone is faulty?

mmmm 3 hours? i think its faultly.. my one last more or less a day with normal usage. gets warm when i use it a lot.

There are many tips in this thread and how to identify which application is using the most battery, and which are causing the device not to sleep correctly. Its a long thread, but worth the read.

If it is only lasting three hours no matter what you do, and it's getting THAT hot, then yeah... I would say there is an issue. Maybe it is shorting out somewhere. I would take it back if I were you. It can have poor battery life under VERY heavy use, but that's still pretty extreme... and I have never seen my battery get above 39c.

I had this last night, but only while I was charging the phone. I pulled the battery & it was around the microSD that was hottest. Took it out & replaced n rebooted...haven't had any problems since.
Doub't the microSD caused the problem but might be worth a try. Either that or when I rebooted I didn't start the app that caused the overheating.
Does it overheat if you just do nothing with it when u reboot?

Hot Battery
I received my HTC on Tues night and within half an hour the palm of my hand was burning inside and yet still not healed (Thurs AM). P10 of the safety guide says this is nonionizng radiation (sounds unhealthy). I believe that the aerial is just beside the SIM and card slot and holding this next to your palm is warned against in the manual. Bit strange since that is how you would hold a PDA. However, I informed my service provider (Three) and they said it must be a fault so are replacing (with new apparently). Slighlty concerning however I will reserve the option to refund until I see the new handset. I might add that I have HTC's XDA Guide for bus. and that battery also gets very hot, but not as quick! Why put an aerial next to a battery, the combination of the two, I beleive is casuing heat issues.

56c?! That's probably the highest I've heard of? What are you doing when it gets that hot, charging?

My phone was charging, WiFi was ON and I was browsering the internet, then i watched a movie. suddenly it started to smell like pommes frites. The phone was lying on a sleeping bag ( which is air tight and works like a heat shield ) and seriously it almost went flame on! lol

I would seriously reconsider your usage when charging. The highest mine has gotten was 40c. Just take into account that the bottom of your screen will also get near that temp, so be very careful

Erm, no.
I'd consider mine overheated if it gets over 35c.

highest I've seen is 38°C, I believe above 45 is extremely hot

I've had to send mine back to HTC for "stress testing" as mine can't even get past 33°C without going into a reboot loop . It gets that hot just with some light use of GPS + Maps or Mobile Internet + Browsing.
Hopefully they at least replace the MoBo or possibly even the whole phone doubtful though...

hehe, my active holder in the car is in such a place I aim the vent/blower at the back of the Desire. No overheating while navigating with the airco on!
But I guess having something this fast (1ghz) in such a small package which uses quite some power as well means it's going to be hot real fast.
Although I don't find the Desire -that- much warmer/hotter than some of the other phones I've owned.
I guess when your Desire gets really hot (over 40C-45C or something) you can always give HTC or the warranty service a call. Perhaps when some parts don't sit properly on the cpu (something like a cooling frame or whatever), temperatures will rise a lot. And might even cause the phone to reboot.

Hi, I had similar problems that is very evident when i started playing games. I sent back to HTC 3 times before they finally replaced my mobo. I suggest you guys do the same

The heat Issue?

I am thinking to buy the phone but I saw some posts there are some heat issues. So what is the problem besides the phone getting too hot? Is it shuting down when it gets too hot or get really laggy? Is there any other problem when heated except it gets really hot?

I haven't experienced any heat issues. I have yet to feel my g3 get warm Tbh.
Others (not sure which model) have reported issues with heat, to the point that it causes the device to throttle the brightness down. Again haven't experienced this on my at&t model.

Same here not felt it get warm even watching video.

When the phone gets hot several things happen.
1) The CPU is clocked down to help lower heat
2) Brightness is capped to help lower heat
3) If the phone continues to get too hot (usually when its already hot and you then start to play a really intense game, or benchmark the phone may shut itself down.

People complained a lot with the Korean model but I haven't seen anyone with a US model complain. Maybe the type of person that waits is less likely to be a phone gamer? They may have actually tweaked it so it doesn't activate as quickly or harshly. I do know some people disabled it on the Korean model. I haven't heard of anything bad happening but those few people may have felt dumb if it destroyed their phone and not posted that it did...

I have no heating problem with my lg g3 international D855 16gb model, even during quadrant test or playing games.

Define an actual temperature for hot.

I disabled the thermal protection on my AT&T version and yes, I've felt it get quite hot while playing Final Fantasy 6. The heat radiated mainly through the metal power button but the entire top half of the device got pretty hot. Didn't bother me all that much tho, as I've had other devices get hot like that in the past.

I use exposed app CPU temp my g3 sits at about 30c and 45c which is normal temps and about 50ish whith thermal protection on disabled.

My girlfriend picked this up yesterday and this is happening to her G3. Not playing games though, just browsing the internet/reading an article. It makes no sense to me. How can you take control over that? She doesn't want to root the phone.
But yeah, just reading something or even looking at Facebook, the phone gets way too hot.

I picked up the Verizon version yesterday. It's gotten pretty warm around the power button a few times for me also. Typically not bad or what I would consider unusual with one or two exceptions.

My G3 (UK) go very very hot yesterday when I was on the train playing a graphically intensive game.
It shut itself down and then refused to turn on again. Ever.
I tried everything all night but no joy. I got a replacement handset today.
I'm sure it was because of the overheating that the phone malfunctioned. Without knowing exactly what has happened to it the timing is too coincidental for it to be random hardware failure. It was SUPER hot!

This is strange. Does the kernel not shut the phone down before it "fries" the SOC?,unless the throttling temps are too high? Wonder if this is linked to the display flickering problem myself and another poster had.

Funny you mention display flickering. I had that about 2 weeks ago. The display started flickering really badly, like nothing I've ever seen on any Android device, and I needed to pull the battery to reset. It didn't boot straight away either, it had to cool down a bit.

all phones get warm if you are on it for an extended period of time, surfing (using data), gaming etc etc screen on for long periods of time. those saying they can game and not have heat are lying to you. phone gets warm when screen is on for extended period of time and by phone I mean any phone

Yeah, i had a flickering display which didnt go away.I returned that phone. Another poster yesterday had the same issue.Im wondering if the GPU is frying itself? Although the GPU does throttle as well as the CPU. Running Antutu I would get 60+deg C maybe playing a game for an extended period of time for example is causing damage? Just a theory.

Serious over heating issue

So ive had my Tmobile G4 for about 3 weeks now. Ive been using the G series since it started. I love the G4 but wow ive never had a phone with this type of heating issue.
There is not a time when the phone js not at least warm to touch. Few times a day it gets to the point where its too hot to touch at all. Forget about making a phone call way to hot to lut against face.
Im not doing muxh of anything either. Web browse etc... But its hot at idle screen off just sitting there.
Anyone have issues with heating? Multiple times its given me the over heating message and shuts off phone.
Last night for example it got to 80c.... Thats fricken hot!
Could factory reset help it? I dont know what to do at this point? Am i just having to get a replacement? As i type this from my g4 sensors showing high 60 to low 70C.
The heat is generating from the top half of the phone btw. Like at the camera it feels like.
Any suggestions or help? Thanks

Is the battery draining abnormally fast? Check the usage for play service, could need that fix

If you live in a hot area like me, such as LA, then you probably experienced phone shutting down while using phone as a GPS due to the overheat.
I've never Had that problems with all of my previous phones but I'd give few software updates for optimization.

Yeah battery is draibing very fasy. I use a battery monitor and nothing is sucking it up.
Also, i live in Arizona where it has been 110 degrees daily. Though it hasnt shut down from heat outside or when using gps yet.
It shut down with over heat warning last night in my apartment where its 67 degrees in here while i was on google.com just browsing. So im clueless right now.
I just cleared cache partition and booted to safe mode to see if it runs any better.
I can leave my phone on my table for an hour and pick it up and itll still be scorching hot doing nothing. Its literally never not hot to touch.

Yeah. That's the mytmobile app... Unchecked all the boxes in the settings. Helped me

My 1st Tmobile G4 Online Preorder had some problems mostly screen. I sent it back. I went to the store and bought one. That one was always hot as well. It was always throwing warnings at me. I had Gmaps on in my car with the AC on and only 70F out the time and it shut down on me. I called Tmobile and did some master reset etc and still was the same. I finally just went back to the store and told them to exchange it after they seen how hot it got in store. Tired to tell me I was at 15days when I went back in but I called in a few days before and asked what day was the 14th Monday or Tuesday I guess they count Purchase day as day 1 and that's what I thought but the person I talked to said no but they called Manager and they honored it. This phone finally seems to be good a few little issue's but they should get worked out soon with software we all hope. The 1st 2 phone's I had the Update Pushed to my phone the 3rd one was already on the phone so might be newer batch ? I was not happy spending over $600 on the phone with the issue's I had on those til this 3rd one which is good so far.

Then I'd say that even when it's doing nothing, it's still actually doing something, maybe just something it shouldn't be doing.
My Verizon G4 ran warm, and I was disappointed with the battery life. Different monitoring tools were unable to point me to what app (?) was causing the problem. Sometimes it would stay cooler after a reboot. Mine was never just constantly hot, however. Mine would be cool sometimes when sitting around, and then sometimes warm. Like taking it off the charger in the mornings, some days it would be cool, others it would be warm (~95F or so), when it had been just sitting there with the screen off.

Just now for example. After i replied here i out my phone on my table. I just now picked it up and it was 74 C. Scorching. Like its just gonna melt ibro a pile of G4 goo lol.
I guess ill call my store on Monday. Safe mode and clearing cache partition didnt help at all.

Are you using a case with it? I recently had overheating issues and figured out that the leather wallet case I was using was causing my G4 leather to overheat. It went as high as 112°5F But as soon as removed it it went back to normal.

Nah I have the black version normal backing not the leather version. I have the thin Tech21 case but i took it off a week ago to see if this helps.
As im typing this my phone is at 75C which is 167 degrees F! So hot!
Possible a Facorty reset could help? I really dont have many apps installed right now either. Since its relatively new ive been slowly installing apps. I started blank, didnt install anything from backups etc. The apps i do have installed are pretty basic. Nothing syncing or running. Ive been clear the recents aswell just to try. Frustrating

Have you tried turning off WiFi? I've noticed occasionally that my phone will constantly drop WiFi on my home router and reconnect a few seconds later, repeating this until I restart the router. All of that constant disconnecting and reconnecting makes it pretty hot...

Yeah its happening regardless. I turn data off when im on wifi and my wifi never loses connection, it stays constant. Though i did try a few days ago using no data or wifi and same dral, just hot.

Have you tried a factory reset? I leave my wifi on and stream music and everything. The only time it gets warm is when I Fast Charge. But I mostly wirelessly charge so its still cool.
Maybe you should exchange it.

I'm second on that doing factory reset. Seems like you have a corrupted profile or rogue app, or both.

What sensors are you referring to? With wich app? That's fundamental

I were having over heating problems on my G4. It were so hot at one point that my 6 year old daughter picked it up to play a game on it. The phone was that hot my daughter actually started crying cause the phone burnt her hand. This is not good. I have an awful lot of applications on my handset, over 300 so before I contacted LG I did a LG backup and reset. I restored probably half the apps what I had and a week after I haven't had a problem and the phone seems to be running as it should. The phone isn't even warm.
My theory is the G4 has 64bit processors. The snapdragon 810 processors were known for over heating and the G4 uses the snapdragon 808 processors for this reason. The 64bit processors deal with twice the data at the same time to the old 32bit processors and this contributes to them getting too hot. I feel that a few tweaks by developers and updates from LG is what's needed to combat the over heating. Time is our friend here and a bit of common sense. When you install a new app and overheating occurs then just remove the problem app. I always see how the app affects the handset now for over heating problems.
The 64bit processors in the G4 are new and need to have some updates to combat the overheating I feel. I recommend a system restore, debloating and only using the apps what you need.
I remember when pc's went from 32bit to 64bit processors. There were processors burning out, melting, water cooling became popular and bigger fans to combat the over heating. In time it sorted itself out so I feel this is the case for the G4 and other new handsets running 64bit processors.

Did anyone try unchecking the boxes in the my T-Mobile app? My phone went from 50% to %5 in less than 30 mins running crazy hot. You could also try uninstalling the app updates, or using the debloater tool on xda to disable it.

Same here, although not so hot that it "burns". iPhone 6 got warm but never so hot - software improvements should help combat this over time. +1 on the debloat tool.
One may argue the dead air via removable back cover can act as an insulator vs a compact design. Maybe just get an Otterbox/Thick case so you can't notice the heat as much? Could possibly lower battery lifespan though.

I've had my AT&T G4 for a little over a week. The first couple days the battery life was horrendous so I did a factory reset. The battery life improved greatly however that's when I noticed the top half of my screen getting unbearably hot. Another factory reset didn't solve the issue. So I talked with an AT&T Rep and am taking mine in for a replacement now. Hopefully will resolve this issue. Will update.

Nexus 5X Heat (normal or problem?)

Hello everybody, before, I know there are several posts on the xda about the phone get so warm, but I think I have a different question. At this point in my country are about 35/36º Celsius, which obviously makes the phone warm up a bit, but i without open any application the temperature reaches 42/43 Celsius, but it will be normal or is a situation to worry ? I see quite a few posts from people saying that the mobile phone reaches 60º, the maximum I could get on my was to 48 and had several applications open and was playing a game. Like all others, the mobile phone is quite hot in the sensor zone and sometimes is hard to use, I even installed an app to close all applications to save battery and cool the phone. Therefore, it is normal but all phones warm up a little when they are being used aggressively, but it's normal after unlocking and without any open application temperatures reach 42/43 celsius? Should i send for warranty or not because this is normal?

This phone is going to heat up considerably in that temperature due to the 808 CPU. If you spend a lot of time outside or in a warmer environment, there may not be anything you can do. Depending on the case, that may also keep the phone running warm as well. Try an RMA and see what happens though.

If the ambient temperature is high then the battery temperature will start high as well. I'm assuming you're monitoring the battery temperature since that is what most apps will report.

Unless it's Greenify, get rid of it. Apps like that can cause more harm than good, and your phone might actually be running hotter due to apps closing/launching more than necessary.

Ok, i will take your help, i unistall the app i use to see the temperature and now i use greenify..
Sorry if this is a stupid question, i switch from a micro sim(old phone) to a nano sim ( nexus 5x) but yesterday the SIM stop worked, i have a new one now and looks like my phone dont get so hot, is this possible or is this my imagination?

Do you have better signal with the new SIM? If the phone has to constantly search for signal, that uses a lot of power and heats up the phone.

I believe yes, i have the 4G as the preferable, but after this new sim i don´t have 4G often, now i do... is a fact :good:

Fixed dreaded bootloop I think!!!

I do believe I fixed my bootloop caused by the CPU. I need some feedback though. Anyone want to download Cpu Temperature from google play and report back with their IDLE temp? I have not done any extensive testing yet such as stress tests etc since I'm still letting my battery charge up. But would like to know what your IDLE temps are compared to mine. I was faced with the dreaded bootloop that happened literally out of nowhere. After doing this fix I have had my phone sitting and charging for about 30 minutes now as where before I couldn't even reach the red Verizon boot screen without keeping it in the freezer for 10 minutes and then powering on only to be able to use it for two minutes. My IDLE temp with screen on at 20% brightness is 29c

To add to the above I then downloaded StabilityTest (ROOT optional) from the google play store to stress test the CPU and ran the classic test for exactly five minutes and then switched directly back to Cpu Temerature at the CPU temp was at 43c so if anyone could also run that test for five minutes on the classic test and report back with their CPU temp I'd appreciate that too.

Just an update, Has been a few hours now and phone is still working after playing angry birds, taking pictures and videos, using facebook and messenger, watching youtube 1080 60fps, and keeping screen at 100% brightness my average IDLE CPU temp is hovering around 35-37c

(attempt the following fix at your own risk I am not responsible for any damages to your phone or property or anyones else's property)
Checking back in. Turns out to be a partial fix. Under normal phone use it works fine. The problem comes when you do a factory reset. The way I fixed mine was I took the phone apart, Took the motherboard out and on the center back of the mother board that faces towards the screen is a piece of thermal tape (very thin) I then took some polished copper and hammered it out to about the thickness of half of a dime. and then cleaned and polished the copper again. (make sure it is pure copper not a penny as most these days aren't 100% copper) Then use some arctic silver 5 thermal paste or even better a NON conductive thermal paste... Take the thin thermal tape off of the processor on the motherboard. Then apply thermal paste on the processor covering entire processor about half the thickness of a dime. Next take your copper which should be at least the size of the processor and stick it onto the processor. Then put everything back together. If your phone is in the middle of a factory reset put it in the freezer between two paper towels for 10 minutes then turn it on and complete factory reset with it still laying in freezer between paper towels. I can't guarantee this will work for others but this is what worked for me. The phone just still gets too hot during a factory reset. I got the idea for this from the following video on youtube and then added my own little spin on it in places.

Unfortunately this didn't work for me wish it did though..

I got the bootloop after owning my G4 for about 18 months. Tried all the software fixes, heating, cooling etc, and got precisely nowhere. However, dismantling the phone, and heating the CPU with a heat gun on low power, followed by a bit of pressure, then reassembling with some thermal grease on the core, has resurrected the phone with no data loss. (Still going to buy a new phone though).
Only problems are - I constantly get a message saying "Unfortunately, Apps Update has stopped." This pops up every time I use the phone, change a screen, open an app etc. and I cannot find a way to fix it.
- LG backup seems to have stopped working properly as well - it won't perform an update, although it does prepare one, and the buttons have decided to label themselves in dots (presumably Korean or something) rather than English scrip, so it is difficult to see what each button does. However, I have backed up all my data through LG Bridge.
- battery life seems awful - but this seems to be a Marshmallow problem, rather than the phone.
- I'm getting a new one because they're cheap, and also I'll have a UK version so I can root, unlock etc. etc.

Same miserable story here. But I don't know how to disassemble phones so I sent it to a friend and he told me its a general problem with the LG G series where the CPU soldering detaches from the mainboard. Every few days I have to sent it back to fix it again, such a pain in the ***...
Mine was as good as a new so I won't buy any LG high-end product after this one ever again.

Just had mine which was out of warranty fixed by LG free after I contacted them, so if you own a bootlooping VS986, there's still hope for it.

I have the LG G4 vs986 so I went to the Verizon store. Try calling this number 1 (800) 243-0000

And what did they do to resolve this issue?
