USB that came with phone hardly fits? - Nexus 5 Accessories

I got this phone 2 days ago, and I have noticed that the USB that came with it, has something like 2 little teeth at the bottom (I guess they are made to hold in the USB better)... But I kind of have to force the USB to come in, and I am afraid that I will damage the port. So is this USB safe to use and can it damage the port? Should I get an USB from another phone?

Should be fine, I never had issues with it. :/

its fine. it's just new and needs to be broken in some. I would make an analogy to something else, but don't think it would be appropriate on xda

So, I don't have to swap it? Could the port get damaged from this USB?

Its fine, 2 little teeth on the flat part, good usb cables will require some effort and may make a click sound.
My 3rd party usb have smaller teeth which makes the connection flimsy and insecure which is worse over time as it can bend the connection in the phone.
you shouldn't worry, you could use a Qi charger, what's worse is dust and lint blocking up the port being in your pocket which requires a clean

The cable will ware out before the port on your phone does. That's why it was designed that way, I believe.

I believe this wont damage your device

[Q] Phones touch screen acts up when USB port is stressed - How to fix?

So, after a couple weeks of trying to figure out the problem, I have finally narrowed it down (yay me!).
Anyways, when there is a cable (and sometimes not) plugged into the USB Port on the phone, and the port is stressed so that it is angled downwards, all input to the touchscreen goes haywire. I attempted to follow the ifixit guide, however I don't have any plastic removal parts, and using my fingers and nails was becoming really painful, but, I don't think it is going to work, because the headphone port began to come off as well, and judging by the pictures in the guide, that isn't supposed to happen.
Anyways, I am wondering, is there any way to fix this? Possibly other then opening the device up? Or should I just go to the repair store and swap it out?
If I do swap it out, what is my chance that I would get a new phone versus a refurb, seeing as how the phone is so new?

Ive tried this. A new cord actually didn't work for me. I also tried it with a different phone, which is where I came to the conclusion that its the actual charging plug. Something in it is either fried or just malfunctioning. The cause of it is unknown, but luckiliy i have a few micro usb chargers laying around and the rest work fine. You should also ask yourselves the following question: Do you have the same problem when charging thru usb on a Comp? If the answer to that question is no, then its clearly not the USB wire. If the answer was yes, then I just didnt have the same problem as you and you can disregard this entire post.

[Q] USB connected message...over and over...

I just received my replacement phone from Sprint. I go to boot it up and see that it is saying USB connected and just saying it over and over, like I am plugging it in and unplugging it. This was pure stock. I go to put Cyanogen Mod back on it and it actually stopped it for a while, but it keeps coming back occasionally. The only way to stop it is to plug a charger up to it and then it stops.
Thanks,
Jaculop

Go back to stock and bring it back to sprint... seems as though lots of these phones have been having this same issue... make sure no apps are installed at all when you bring it to them so they can't blame it on an app...

i had this problem also, drives me crazy, The worst thing is this will eat my battery. All i can do is to hide the notification bar (possible if using adw launcher), but when i open an app, the notification bar appears again.
Done anything like back to stock ec05, repartition etc, etc. But now im on MTD and at first the problem with usb is still there, but now it is completely gone, wtf

I had this problem when I first got my epic (bought it used on eBay). I tried blowing in the port and stuff. Eventually the problem went away and hasn't come back.

uh, not to scare you or anything, but you don't clean any ports on a cell phone with a damp cloth, it will do harm to it. take a toothbrush that has never been used before and gently brush the port. then blow into the port to remove debri (small particles), then try it.

seems not, i use the cable to charge my Desire HD with no problem..
I'm opening the converter apart, it is just mini-usb 2 cables soldered to the maybe VBUS and ground micro usb, so this is a charger cable, the data pin was shorted, maybe this is why the notification stopped ?

Loose mini USB port

I just noticed my mini USB port is fairly loose that when the usb cable is angled at a particular direction charging stops.
I tried the same cable at two other phones and no problem. I visually inspected the port and it seems the metal that surround and supports the mini usb broke at the side making the top and bottom part separate from each other. It makes the port not a snug fit but a losse fit... And so I wonder if anyone else had this issue? I've only had my S3 for a few months and I use it roughly the same as my old phones (yes, I do use it while charging) and they didn't have this problem... Is it really that easy to break or do I seem to be mistreating it?
Note: The small pointy thing is ok, so I can still charge and do other stuff. Only issue is that it's a loose fit.

I was just dealing with this last night. It may be a little flimsy. Hopefully it doesn't get worse
I know... If it gets worse, I hope I don't get caught somewhere having unable to flash a stock rom via odin... To claim a clean warranty... Afterall, the damage is on the hardware and can be seen outside
Is it the original cable? I know my charger cable is stupid loose but my USB cable is fine.

I'll have to check with Wireless Wave where I bought the phone... Because it's either they send it for repair which would take weeks and they'd give me a crappy temporary phone... Or if I'm lucky replace it on the spot... Which I doubt... So I'll have to weigh in the options... It's not much of an issue right now but pretty sure it will be soon enough so I have to ask them soon... I'm just doing some poking around to see if other people experience this as well if it's a fairly "common" issue then they might give me a replacement if I tell them fixing wouldn't help because it may just happen again.

Bad USB port? Maybe a software issue?

Saturday night I had my phone on the charger overnight. When I woke up, it was still low and had not charged. I played with the cable and got it to start charging, but not properly. I figured it was probably a bad cable or charger, not sure why though. So I used a zero lemon case that worked fine. My charger in the car worked okay too. Fast forward to this morning and the phone now displays as being plugged into usb and charging something - see attached. Plugging in any other chargers changes nothing. Powering off will show a charging icon. I doubt it's a software issue but it could be I suppose, but I suspect I have a bad charging port. It's currently wireless charging, but still displaying the message in the status bar. Stock ROM, custom kernel. Any ideas? I will probably try a reflash tonight to see if it changes anything. Edit: not a kernel issue, switched kernels and same issue. I'm almost certain this is a bad usb port but I've never experienced a bad one before.
Is it still attached to the Zero Lemon case? It looks like the phone is charging it. If nothing is attached, then the port might be goofed. Did you try cleaning any lint out of it? Use a toothpick or plastic dental flosser. DO NOT use a paperclip or anything else metal as it could damage the port.

Have you tried a different wall charger, reversing the cable, same cable different charging block, etc? Does the notification persist all the time, only after it's plugged in, does rebooting remove it?

I have, three different chargers, all with different cords. One of them is the same cord I used to connect it to a PC a minute ago, and USB and charging work when connected to a PC. Reboot does nothing, the notification persists until it's plugged into a PC.
I had this issue too, was freaking out. Cleaned the USB c port with a dental pick and got some lint out, still no good.
So...I powered off the device. Wrapped a thin layer of iso alcohol wipe on the dental stick and cleaned as good as I could. After a few seconds of drying, used a aerosol duster to blow out the port.
Been fine for months now.
An update, in the usb preferences screen, if I select USB controlled by this device, it will charge normally. Seems more like a software issue, but if it's acting weird when off, would it be? When off it would indicate a firmware or hardware issue. At least I would think.
Had the same thing happen to me, its a faulty use port. Contacted support and they got me a new phone. The only bad part is you gotta have a credit card to have them send it out

Please don't use a toothpick to clean USB ports. I did that some time ago and broke some pins, just slightly, so it sometimes worked, sometimes it didn't. Replacing the jack (was a different waterproof phone) was a pain and cost a quite a bit of money.
Try to wash it down with alcohol and blow it lightly with compressed air, several times.

Question Phone charging, but it isnt

I think i just ****ed my phone with a simple USB. I wanted to stream to pc so i plugged a usb c into my device and into my pc, then i noticed it wasnt detecting on redmagic app so i unplugged, now my battery status is in green and it has a white lightning bolt by it, and thinks it is charging when it isnt. Says charging 45 days left, accubattery has stupid high voltage, and rebooting doesnt fix it. Do i need to send it back for warranty or something? never had issues with default charger, i just used this ****ing usb c for streaming and now my **** is broken if i shut off the phone it brings itself back and before unlock shows the charging symbol in the middle. Please can anyone help me ill take any suggestions
Maybe the charger is the problem.
Always check the charger.

Maybe the port got damaged? Try to clean it first if possible using an ear swab dipped in rubbing alcohol with the device turned off and let it dry.
If it's a damaged port, may need to be repaired.

Do you understand what power surges are or what improperly plugging in a cable can do to a port of a mobile device?
For example: Too much or too low voltage can damage a port to the point the device will think something is there, when it isn't. The same goes for damaging the pins when you plug the charger in.

my friend was saying something similar, but was originally going more towards "android got drunk, reset"
but sadly that didn't work. So im assuming plugging in a usb-c to my phone to my pc literally ****ed my port/battery. I didn't SHOVE it in, i plugged it in as i would my normal charger.
if voltage is the case, i find it very unfair they don't disclose this in their streaming app, it simply says to use a usb-c and that is what i did, now im paying for trying to use a feature of a device i paid for.
already shot an email to support, and have a backup phone in the meantime.
appreciate your response, backing up one of the theories of why its now screwed.

"stuff" happens, it's unfortunate but technology is known to go bad randomly without explanation. Best to get it repaired if you still have warranty. Otherwise, upgrade the phone to something newer. It's just bad luck.
Sometimes people buy cars and they break down within a few months.

Did you try the rubbing alcohol cleaning? I had something similar with an ipad, the USB c cable broke a couple of the female port and it ended up screwing the whole thing, as much as I want to advice anything, it ain't a software issue but a hardware one, the only option I see it's cleaning the port and trying to "scrap" any debris that might been left by the other cable, If that doesn't work, then yes, use your warranty asap

i didn't even think of that, but if i were to do that, wouldn't they then use that as an argument of why it stopped working? "oh well you put cleaning alcohol in the port, of course its gonna break idiot" etc

i dont think port is damaged, i think voltage from my pc to phone was so high/low that it totally ****ed the battery or port.
once again, all i did was take a USB-C CORD and PLUG IT INTO MY DEVICE, took the other end and plugged into USB, i see nubia app doesnt see phone, unplug it, and ****ed.
has to be electrical, nothing else makes sense for what i did, the only cord they give you out of the box is a 65w usb-c to usb-c, had i a proper cord from usb-a to usb-c i wouldnt be in this situation
https://imgur.com/RD7c0LV
i did what it said, and now im paying for it. Given the fact there's no way to change the charging method/wattage/voltage in the system, i feel they should at least specify what TYPE of usb-c cord to use, because im just a normal user who wanted to stream to pc, and all because i simply did what they said, I'm out of a phone. Ridiculous.
im convinced the voltage of device + too high/low voltage of port, screwed the battery up, and now it thinks its always charging, and says 45 days left till full charge, does this not sound like a problem from electricity? i did NOTHING ELSE, this is the dumbest thing i've ever had to deal with, all because i plugged in my phone to pc
