It just mean unlock sim...any provider will work....on any lg phone with unlock bootloader...same as buying an unlock code from ebay(what i did for $2)
That is. Less hoops to jump through development-wise.

Dont think this is just about a SIM unlock. The article says " ......pre-unlocked and ready to flash the custom ROMs like CyanogenMod or Paranoid Android." So we are talking about custom ROMs. I can see that unlocked bootloaders helps manfacturers since more custom ROMs could make their devices more popular...of course, the device needs to be half decent in the first place.
Wireless providers want to have bootloader locks to avoid warranty issues with people modding phones improperly and then asking for a replacement for bricked devices. Also custom ROMs allows one to remove carrier customized apps which allows the carriers to push their services.

It appears that Samsung has disabled root at the kernel level on new kernels for the 9500 and 9505. It looks like Samsung is going back on developer community support in favor of enterprise security.

I hope they don't do that to us in the states - originally I thought it was because of the Exynos exploits but the 9505 is a Snapdragon 600 device.

This is worrisome stuff - it may not affect those of you with a device right now but if it ends up being enacted across the board, you better hope that you never break it.
This is the first time I've seen this implemented on the kernel level. It is by far the most effective way to prevent root as it keeps you from being able to switch to the root user. Without the ability to do that, all software exploits are worthless. And good luck exploiting the kernel itself.

Do they do this with a firmware upgrade? If so, would avoiding any OTA updates and only flashing Modded ROM's be a way to avoid it?

I would assume yes.. and once youre rooted, you dont gotta worry about OTAs anyways....
OP suggested in another thread that this can be an issue if god forbid you need a replacement device..
I then stated that if we saved the backtostock file for the current firmware, this could possibly be avoided by flashing it through odin on a new device, but if samsung doesnt allow that by some means, were screwed
They're barring root at the kernel level on the i9500/i9505, but the difference with those models is that they have unlocked bootloaders and custom recovery with kernel source. It's possible to just install a custom recovery with ODIN and make a modified kernel (both of which are common practice in rooting anyway). They're just making it so that if you want to obtain root, you have to have physical access to the device to flash through ODIN, which is a lot safer in the long run. All this means is that Sally can't be exploited by running an APK or a malicious file to get root without her consent. (It also means that her "techy" boyfriend will have to understand ODIN to get root from now on,)

The T-Mo S4 has an unlocked bootloader. This is much ado about nothing. Read the last few pages of the thread.
i think we are flipping out over nothing. this is probably just for government phones. I think samsung is smart enough to know the heat they will get if they implement this across the board.
Worse comes to worse, carriers start to implement this, and tmobile doesnt seem interested in doing anything of the sort. the verizon and at&t guys are the ones that should be worried then.
but like i said before. making a mountain out of a molehill
It's for security reasons. You will still be able to install a custom kernel and have root. One minute people complain about an exploit the next they complain about not being secure.. it really isnt a big deal. Well I'm not a dev so I can't really say it's not a big deal but it is what it is and you'll still be able to have root.

Come on now. How tech savvy does one have to be to use ODIN. Honestly, my MyTouch 3G was more difficult to root than this thing with ODIN. Point, click, profit. I'm sure all those "techy" boyfriends will be rooting Sammy phones just as easily as they do now. At some point someone will figure out a one click solution anyway.
I agree 100% though, this really is nothing to worry about. I welcome it honestly. Its a great bump for security. Given the current state of things with the NSA and whatever else trying to siphon data like damn vampires and hack everything in sight like Jason. Though I'd say this is more for businesses, we need all we can get. As it sits, we're about as bad off as Windows 95 would be on today's internet surfing warez sites.

Hi guys,
I got a galaxy s4 T-mobile one week before, since i was going to use the mobile out of state i didnt check the performance and smoothness of the mobile becuz i was going to unluck it first.
The first method i used to unlock the mobile was the one posted on the general section using the hidden menu but with no luck!!!
After that i used the box method by flashing the snapdragon chipset which is done by some guy and it worked!!!
Does unlock affect the cpu and gpu performance??!!
If does so, can i fix it??!
It is realy annoying to have a flagship mobile and to be not even maching the galaxy s3 performance!!!

is lag something common even with the locked devices or it is also with the unlocked or may be just with my device??!
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Unlocking your phone doesn't affect the way your phone runs at all. It just opens the phone so you can insert any SIM card and use it. If you are stock and not rooted I recommend rooting and flashing a custom rom or manually removing bloatware to get rid of a ton of lag.

Hey everyone,
Just curious, if I root/custom rom the phone does it also carrier unlock the device as well?
I have a Rogers SGH-I747M running Droid Version 4.1.2 on it.
I'd like to have it rooted and throw a custom rom on the device as well, just too much bloatware on the stock device.
Any sort of guidance is much appreciated.
Thank you all once again.
No it will not unlock the carrier. If you are still on jelly bean 4.1.1 you can unlock the phone using the hidden menu on the phone. Just search unlock galaxy s3. I know at&t unlocks most of there older devices for free these days. Just takes them a little while to get you the unlock code, 5 days at the most.

I have already done that unlock, but I don't think it is permanent?
Correct me if I'm wrong..
But say it is a permanent unlock, if I custom rom the device will I lose the unlock? Or will I retain it?

I just flashed stock, got a code from AT&T and unlocked, then flashed AOKP a couple weeks ago. Unlock stays, happily on T-Mobile now.

Thanks. I finally got i747 At&t s 3 working on T-Mobile's Walmart $30/monthly unlimited web/text/100 min plan. Don't want to loose that feature & need a rom instead of this stock rooted 4.1.1 to allow for native tethering with touchwiz features. It looks like every ROM that I see is AOSP based.

There's plenty of TW based roms. Search for 4.1.2/4.1.1 in the title, those are likely to be TW based.

When you got your code did AT&T give you any hassle to get it ? They will not give me a code but I think its because I bought it outright..? Anyone know if that could be the reason why ?

Think about it. Every single us carrier (as far as I know) has a locked bootlaoder meaning you can't flash most custom roms. So far there isn't a way to unlock it. Only the Euro H815 can be unlocked. Also CM is in the works. So once that is fully working I'm sure we will see many roms. But overall it is early in the rooting/Rom building scene
screen skipping when using a Swype style keyboard it manifests itself in the same way as lifting your finger during swyping , if you go into the maintenance menu and do the screen test you get gaps while swiping the screen by all accounts these had finally been fixed in the euro update on the 31st of august, but 4 months is a long time for bugs which effect the basic functionality of the phone.

early stages, not alot of devs on this phone yet, locked bootloader.
we're geting there OP. i think just last week they got x-posed working for g4.
i remmeber when phone came out, people where making threads thinking root would never come to the g4 cuz it was too hard, and too dangerous and this and that. But patients is key, just hang in there man, im waiting on some good roms too. but first we gotta get that bootloader unlocked
I'm getting tired of my g5 with no root
. So my question is, since I have the jump on demand and usually keep my phones about 6 months, is s-off really worth it for me?
I root, Xposed, rom and adblock. Nothing special.

Thank you for the reply. I'll probably pick my m10 up today. I'm done screwing with LG g5 no root ☺
http://www.xda-developers.com/lg-g5-on-t-mobile-bears-unlockable-bootloader-afterall/
G5 has an unlockable bootloader (and thus root is possible if not out already.) In fact, the process is basically the same as the Nexus phones. The G4 and V10 were the same way.
OP, the devs over at the G5 T-Mobile subforum just achieved root+twrp last night. Take a look if you're still holding on to the phone.

Ya the s7 has the easiest to use camera too. I still haven't made my mind up. The g5 camera is much easier to use. I am no expect, I just point and shoot. The battery on the g5 seems to be okay but you can swap it out unlike the m10.

Is it the same to return the device? Flash the stock backup, relock the bt, think I'd be okay? Returning two devices, one is untouched.

Going back to S-ON is a bit trickier without a RUU. If anything is messed up, you brick the phone. I wouldn't set the secure flag just in case. T-Mobile takes Knox tripped phones and that's permanent so I don't see why they wouldn't take S-OFF which is not.
