Custom Rom, will it unlock device too? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey everyone,
Just curious, if I root/custom rom the phone does it also carrier unlock the device as well?
I have a Rogers SGH-I747M running Droid Version 4.1.2 on it.
I'd like to have it rooted and throw a custom rom on the device as well, just too much bloatware on the stock device.
Any sort of guidance is much appreciated.
Thank you all once again.

No it will not unlock the carrier. If you are still on jelly bean 4.1.1 you can unlock the phone using the hidden menu on the phone. Just search unlock galaxy s3. I know at&t unlocks most of there older devices for free these days. Just takes them a little while to get you the unlock code, 5 days at the most.

I have already done that unlock, but I don't think it is permanent?
Correct me if I'm wrong..
But say it is a permanent unlock, if I custom rom the device will I lose the unlock? Or will I retain it?

I'm pretty sure it remains unlocked. Might wanna do a search and read up on it first though.

I just flashed stock, got a code from AT&T and unlocked, then flashed AOKP a couple weeks ago. Unlock stays, happily on T-Mobile now.

Thanks. I finally got i747 At&t s 3 working on T-Mobile's Walmart $30/monthly unlimited web/text/100 min plan. Don't want to loose that feature & need a rom instead of this stock rooted 4.1.1 to allow for native tethering with touchwiz features. It looks like every ROM that I see is AOSP based.

There's plenty of TW based roms. Search for 4.1.2/4.1.1 in the title, those are likely to be TW based.

When you got your code did AT&T give you any hassle to get it ? They will not give me a code but I think its because I bought it outright..? Anyone know if that could be the reason why ?

[Q]How to flash other S3 ROMs to the Tmobile S3

Hello, I was curious if you can flash ROMs from the S3's from other carriers besides T-Mobile and also flash ROMs from the international forums. I remeber back when i had my Vibrant all you would have to do is flash the correct boot.img and also replace the keylayout file. Is it as simple as flashing a tmobile boot.img since the keys are all the same? Thank you in advance.
don't do it.

There is a possibility of sharing ROMs with the AT&T model. If you go check out their forum, there are a couple of ROMs which people have successfully flashed on the T-Mobile model. Search the threads and flash at your own risk!

That is totally true. On the Hercules you could flash the skyrocket roms. But the T-Mobile ones are usually better. The att ones are really only better when att leaks first.
Don't do it was an oversimplification, however.
Just heard about too many people flashing the international roms.

Nope, the hardware internally is too different. I doubt there'll be an easy method to port the ROMs either.
The AT&T ROMs on the other hand should be fairly easy to port and I think there is a group working towards this goal.
You will lose your insurance.
Just to let you know, you will lose your phone's insurance, this is not the same as the 90 day warranty. I remember I had flashed my vibrant to a rom using the international model, about six months later I got a letter in the mail saying assurion would no longer insure my phone, because it wasn't the right model. I might have been able to add the text file that adds the correct model number, but I don't know if that really works or how to I it.

In this case they could have seen the flashing being done and the changing of the build.prop file. That would make the most sense to me.
You obviously haven't been reading...heck go for it.
You CAN NOT do other roms, as was stated, the hardware is different.
Not that hard to search. Do it and report back with results.

Risky is an i9300 rom because the SoC is 100% different. We all have the same SoC so it's not as big of a deal.

International N7105 firmware confirmed working on i317!!!

For any of you who want to have your cake and eat it too, you can now flash the international N7105 firmware onto your AT&T branded i317!
What does this mean? It means that you can give AT&T the middle finger by having unlocked firmware with none of the restrictions and bloatware. By extension, this also means that you can benefit from the development going on for the international devices.
Finally, this also means that you can reap all those benefits without sacrificing LTE access in North America!
Now that this has been confirmed to work with the i317, I wonder if the T889 is next...

We tried flashing the international N7105 firmware onto the i317 using Odin, but that didn't work. However, the procedure seems to be working if, instead of using Odin, you flash a re-packaged stock N7105 firmware using a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP, just like flashing any other custom ROM. Once that's done, just flash the AT&T modem/kernel, and you're all set!
Unfortunately, there hasn't been much development for the N7105 yet. Root, CWM, deodexing and all the other basics are there, but that's all for the moment. Devs are still trying to work out N7100/N7105 inter-compatibility. N7100 firmware will flash to an N7105, but the modem won't work, so that's pretty useless, and that's what we're all trying to fix.
At least, in the mean time, you can enjoy a stock N7105 experience in North America without AT&T/Rogers sticking their fingers in the pie

Very nice.
Upon thinking about it. I believe there is a way to use this method to give us international firmware and also retain our NA CSC's so we keep carrier specific settings such as Wi-Fi access, Fast dormancy and the like too.
Currently working on it and will get back to people once I am finished.
Glad to see someone else was working on this as it was something I wanted to get around to messing with but have been busy poking into Bootloaders and dialer codes.

Agreed however, no one knows for sure it isn't present in our devices and that Samsung just removed the driver at the request of the greedy NA companies. They don't want us listening to something for free when they can force us to connect and use data. Maybe the driver is in the 7105 firmware...

Did what Miscom had done and got the latest GT-I7105 Unbranded firmware release LJ5, with this one I injected the Canadian CSC's and everything seems to be working except a few carrier apps that check for the proper model number they would force close on me.
Going over this firmware, seems okay but doesn't seem to be any better then the stock LJ2 that came with the phone.
My main hope with using an international firmware would be unlocked dialer codes, and I was correct in my testing, any carrier locked dialer codes are controller within the firmware + check what CSC you have as well.
Got some working that I couldn't before hand, however the main one that I wanted to use was the *#7465625# to view network lock status, it was one that I couldn't get working, but I believe that it wasn't working because my phone is already a factory unlocked one so to really know for sure I'd half to have one that is known to be locked.
Anyways, glad this experiment worked, I will definitely be looking at this again in the future, however I know that the Samsung Canada is planning on releasing an updated firmware for the phone at the same time or soon after the Canadian S3's get their Jelly Bean updated, and it is also rumored that they will be 4.1.2 as well. So with this possibility I will be going back to Bell's Stock firmware and see what we get in a few weeks.

So you say we can't because you are lazy? If you want a sprint or Verizon rom you would be willing to remove the radio file and update the script (honestly 2 minutes of work).
I can confirm I had the 4.1 version of sprints PA ROM (was out before ours or ATT) working, I needed tmobile radio and kernel (took from early port of CM10) and needed an APN app to set APNS as settings APN selector force closed on me.

The radio you get from the development forum. you have a good radio if you get T-Mobile signal. Try downloading HiAPN Global or see if you can change the APNs in the settings menu, I would bet you the APN for T-Mobile is not there.

A week ago I tested exactly what you mentioned here... a sprint rom with the tmobile radio. Worked like a champ. Ended up going back to Teshxx's deodexed t-mobile rob because at the end of the day, every single thing works right out of the box, including the themes I want to install on top.
How did you get around the APN force close issue?

I just want it to get into the hands of the TW ROM teams, Ditto Note, Sky Note and Jedi so I can see what they do with it.
Yeah, my contract is up in January and I don't think I'm going to stick with AT&T. It seems like they really don't update their phones if they don't absolutely have to. =/

I don't think that the update will be far behind the other carriers. At&t always waits till the last possible moment for anything. My guess is that it wont be an OTA but thru Kies which will suck cause my CPU just crashed on me the other day

Well as far as I can tell they're already the last carrier to push the update. The only question now is "WHEN?" (if ever, heh...)
As for Kies, I highly doubt it. Every other update was always OTA. Kies is just a convenience factor.
Refurbished units and warranty replacement devices reportedly have 4.3 loaded..
Of course ...no love for the current users ...again....g

I thought you only ran AOSP roms. Don't tell me you are cheating on AOSP with TW.

Uh....gotta go....LOL
Update is failing... I think it's b/c I removed some Sammy bloat apps.
I've never had to go back to stock / unroot. Is there a guide? Is there a stock SGH-I317 UCAMC3 zip in this forum I can use with odin?
-J
(Yes, I searched a ton and only found some questionable non-xda guides.)

I bet that "official" update won't have any note 3 spen features or multi window features integrated into it!

Just got update on my GT-I9300 international version unlocked, got installed successfully but then apps started giving problem, crashing multiple time, unable to launch. So had to reset, works fine now.
One thing! I felt my phone was damn slow after the update.
