I plan on rooting this in the future, but I am gonna play around with it stock for a bit. That being said, what now? Should I charge to full immediately or drain it then charge? Should I register it or not since I will root in the future? Anything I need to do out of the box? I got a 64 GB Samsung SD card for it as well. Any suggestions are appreciated.

open a pitch solid black HD picture in gallery in full screen, set brightness to max, check to see if any color bleeding/ gradient. the black wallpaper must be completely pitch black, just looks like when the screen is off.
fully charge the device, when reached 100, leave it plugged in approx 15 minutes, if the charging adapter is cooling down a few moments when reached 100, that's good. unplug it.
rush to acc store, put a screen protector. tab s is not protected by gorilla glass, we never know when it will be scratched.
about rooting :
- root will trip knox fuse to 0x1, and it is NOT reversible, not until now.
- depends on samsung technicians in your area, some may void warranty if they know that knox had been tripped, but some have no idea what knox is, so, it's just a lucky draw.
Thanks. All is well with the screen and charging as I did what you said. Also went and got a zagg shield from Best buy. There are a lot of bubbles, but the guy said they would go away in a few days. Time will tell I guess. Also, what is the screen made of if not gorilla glass? Hell, I thought that was the standard in 2014.

UPDATE: Phone was replaced at the nearest service center free of charge, no questions asked. :highfive:
My phone took a fall today from about mid-chest height. I didn't think anything of it as it was in a case and the screen is unblemished, but a few minutes later I noticed it wouldn't turn on. I pulled the battery a few times, tried the three-finger salute while connected to power and it's showing no response. It does get a bit warm after a few minutes of having the battery in it, though. I'm pretty sure it's done for but if anyone has any suggestions for getting it to power up, I'm all ears!
In life, was obviously rooted and ran AOKP. In death, it's as beautiful as the day I bought it cosmetically speaking. No signs of liquid or physical abuse of any kind. Is it even worth it trying for the warranty replacement? "I woke up this morning and my phone won't power on, I dunno what happened?!?" Or should I not even bother and just take the $200 to the face for insurance to replace it? I'm just looking for some opinions. Thanks all! :highfive:

No blemishes and it doesnt power on?
WARRANTY
"I woke up this morning and my phone wont turn on."
-did you drop it or damage it?
"nope, take a look, not a scratch or mark on the moisture detector"
how can they not warranty it?
I'd try it. If it won't turn on at all, won't show anything on the screen, i seriously doubt they could hold the idea of it being rooted or using a custom ROM against you. Actually.... they can't even really use the idea of it being rooted against you, since rooting is legal per the DMCA.... so i think you'd be alright trying for a warranty replacement.
seriously, its not like they will send it to the forensics lab for deep analysis of the installed software
Ha. Thanks guys, I will try this on Tuesday as I've been stucking working overtime well past the time the stores close. I'll update in a couple days!
I bricked my old SGS2 while flashing CM9 wouldn't power open. Called in a replacement. As long as it doesn't turn shouldn't be a problem.

If all else fails, you should be able to flash stock back onto it even if you cant see the screen. If it heats up, I assume that it is powered on but you just cant see it. I would suggest using a USB dongle from ebay to force it into download mode and then Odin it back to stock. Even if this is not necessary, I would still suggest you get yourself one of the Usb Jigs to have around just in case in the future.
did you guys bought additonal monthly warranty from AT&T or is there a factory warranty from Samsung for 1 year period since purchased date?

I'm a little concerned about my current predicament.
A month ago I bought a rooted Galaxy Note II second hand. I have had no problems with it until Saturday morning.
On Saturday I plugged it in - it was flat because the battery had ran out of juice from the previous night. I left it off and plugged in. I returned not long after to a slight burning smell, and the phone was roasting hot.
I could turn it on, but it hasn't charged, still showing 1% and cutting out immediately. Any time you plug in within seconds, it overheats.
It has burned in one spot, and burned the battery cover as well.
Obviously I am not impressed, it could have burned the place down if I'd left it on overnight.
However, the device has been rooted, and can be turned on but it will damage it more if you do. It has had a theme applied to it that could only be done with a rooted phone so it is blatantly obvious.
I've put in a support call with Samsung who are going to send out a bag to send it off to them in. I would have preferred to send them an unrooted phone, but obviously not practical and I don't know anyone else with a Note 2. I also don't want to buy replacement components in case I make it worse or damage those.
Anyone faced a similar predicament, and what was done about it?
Well, in this case, a melted phone is very dangerous, they should or must send you a new one just to not report it to the police or the media!
I think the problem was in the battery, it's the only component that can get so hot and even it can explode in some conditions.

My concern is they try to say that it was the fact the phone was rooted that caused it to overheat... although it was switched off at the time.
Don't worry I won't let it go without a fight, but am unsure about what rights I may or may not have.

Try to run triangle away, before you return it.

Phone is totally flat, and will only turn on when the battery is connected, and it is connected to the mains. It will overheat with a minute.
In Norway, and I assume in the EU too, they have to prove that there is a connection between the broken phone and the fact that it is rooted to void warranty. No worries then if there's similar legislature in your country.

What if you charge it with usb cable connected to a computer? Does it still overheat?
Alternatively, do you know any1 with a note 2 whos battery you can borrow?

Try buying a spare battery. And then try triangle away. Put the faulty battery back in the phone and send it to Samsung.
It's way cheaper than having to pay for the full phone repair.

This thread's funny. A second hand phone received or bought rooted which could have been using a different kernel, been OC'd, or had any of a laundry list of mods done to it overheats. Since none of that can be ruled out, why is there any reason to alert the media or expect Samsung to be responsible for something that's most likely not a defect but customer induced damage? With millions sold I'd expect more reports of phone's melting if there was some sort of common or repeatable fault. Best of luck OP but your fate will be determined by Samsung's graciousness and not you claiming that a rooted second-hand device somehow combusted on its own having nothing to do with what you or the first owner did to it.
To be fair if it's not charging the battery at all and just overheating/melting the phone it sounds more like a hardware issue than a software one. Something in the charging circuit is screwed up by the sounds of it.

idk if this help, last time my S2 also got some issue so I go to SC and the guy there said that I voided my warranty coz I rooted it.
And that statement made me angry, so I said to him in angry tone: why the hell you say its illegal to root and voided my warranty becoz I root my phone. If that's illegal, why the hell Superuser/SuperSU/any root tools exist in Google Play and Google let it in there for a long time? I bought this phone by my money so I have right to install anything in play store.
Then they unable to say something and fix my phone rightaway and told me to be careful next time.
So, rooting isn't illegal, its in Google Play anyway.
ask yr friends or someone borrow a battery and reset the counter first
I don't know anyone with an N2 so I can't borrow a battery, I'd have to buy one.
I'll try plugging it just into the computer, I suppose with less power going in, it might not overheat. I've been reluctant to plug it back in.
Phone is running standard kernel, it was only rooted, with a replacement status bar added, and CWM installed. Nothing special.
Ideally, I would need to flash it back to standard though, so I'll need to find out the easiest / quickest way to do this, and, possibly, reset the counter.
I suppose its possible they will refuse to fix it. If I am, that is me massively out of pocket, and I won't be rooting anything ever again, even buying second hand is losing its appeal.
Heck, as I can't afford to replace it, I now may be stuck with this Nokia Lumia 800 I had to buy as an "emergency" phone, which is actually not a bad little machine in many respects (obviously tiny though).

Given the near fatal consequences of a battery explosion you shouldnt have any problems Samsung will be much more interested in working out why it happened and avoiding any negative PR about their flagship handset.
However if they can proove that it was the root that caused the burn out (we all know thats not the likely reason) then they may reject the device and tell you it was all your fault. at that point take it to the media.
to me it sounds like the charging circuit has failed and instead of passing charge to the battery its built up in the circuit, mechanical failure can't see how a root would cause that. Were you using the sammy charger, cable and battery?

Ye that was my thought wonder if OP has original sammy cable and charger or was given a third party one?
Yes I did indeed use the original charger and cable (it looks original too, not like a knock off). In general, in the past, I've had issues using chargers mean't for other devices, usually just slow charging though rather than it blowing up.
The fact the phone was turned off when it was being charged suggests to me, like you say, that its a proper hardware fault.
We shall see. I'm waiting for the jiffy bag to send it back, it will be at least 2 weeks till I get it back (maybe longer now with Xmas coming up).

Take a picture of the burned note2 first, maybe you can use it as a "leverage" when the time comes. You know how burned phone have negative impact on products marketing.
I was hoping to turn my wife's old epic 4g touch into a cheapcast. So I bought an mhl adapter from monoprice. She hasn't used her phone in a few months so it was completely dead, so I charged it up and booted the phone and the screen was acting really funky with grey lines and such. The problem just seemed to get worse and worse over a ten minute period, and now the screen is just grey with lines sometimes, and completely grey at other times, every once in a while I can see the screen barely through the lines.
Capacitive buttons seem to still work and I can tell the touch screen is still working as I can unlock the phone, but I can't see anything on the screen at all. I did have the MHL adapter hooked up for a few minutes to verify it worked, and it did but thats it.
I seen some other threads about the grey lines being a battery issue, but I have three batteries for the phone and the same issue with all three. Two are cheap batteries and one is the original samsung battery. And I couldn't find any threads about a completely grey screen with a working touch screen.
So is it dead? Would recovery possible fix this? If so how the heck do I get to download mode without being able to see the screen?
This phone is stock unrooted with whatever the latest firmware update from sprint was. Sorry I can't give you more details, it wasn't my phone so I haven't messed with it too much.
Maybe one of the ribbon cables came loose.

Yeah I may have to do a tear down. Just seems odd that it would slowly degrade that way. Oddly enough I tried the MHL adapter again and it will display the screen, but its pretty difficult to type on the screen that way. I would probably be golden if the phone was rooted. Then I could easily load some vnc software and be done, but alas Its not rooted...
Not sure if you know how or not. But put tge phone in download mode and use a one click version no data of the same stock version number. Now its rooted and you lost no data in the process. You can find your build version in the about phone section of your phone. So if you have fl24 look up the one click no data version

It is likely that the battery is shot. What happens with lith-ion batteries is when they lose all of their charge, the become unstable to completely useless. When the phone dies, the battery still has about 20% charge left. Over time that charge drops to levels making the use of it inadvisable. I suggest trying a new battery first. If that does not fix it, we can work from there. Order one and check the flex cables in the meantime. An unstable battery can cause undesirable behavior of the device to include screen issues.

I suppose thats a possibility. Unfortunately I've already done a factory reset on the phone so theres not much there anyway. I'm used to nexus phones that make it super easy to root and sideload via adb, so I'm just going to have to dig in and do some reading on this phone so I can put all the pieces together. Certainly I'll choose that option over doing a tear down. Teardown will be the last resort.
Hey Thanks GrayDiggy, Unfortunately my cheap cast project is starting to add up a tad. I was hoping with three separate batteries I could eliminate that as an issue. I'll see if i can source a new battery cheap.
Just got my Note 10.1 2014 and was so excited to play with it and guess what? The screen is dead. I can hear it boot up and everything even the capacitive menu and back buttons make their annoying "water drop" noises and light up. Anyone know something I can do about this? I've already ordered a replacement from Amazon but would like to try and fix it meanwhile (I put 1 day shipping for a reason...). I'm really impressed with Samsung's quality control. Tinted screens, loose speaker grills, unresponsive tablets, and now one that has a screen that doesn't even work out of the box. Thanks Samsung!

This happened to me last night. My screen did eventually work, and it might've been related to it being charged. I still sent mine back to Amazon today, however.
You may want to read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551881
When I did my RMA last night they only would do a refund since the 32 GB Black model was out of stock at Amazon, so I'm carefully reconsidering what tablet I want now... ugh.

Thanks for the link. I don't know if I want to open up the back cover and risk breaking anything as of now because I only got it like an hour ago, but I'm going to try charging it fully to see if it works later. That really sucks that they don't have it in stock anymore and Samsung should really be getting a lot of **** for this. Nobody wants to spend 500-600 dollars on a tablet and have it not work after a week let alone the first hour. I have been thinking about the iPad Air, but I like the S-Pen so much I don't know what to do. Sigh, first world problems. :crying:

Well, the wonderful thing (sarcasm) is that it was back in-stock this morning, but my RMA was already set up for a return and I was sending a case back too. I could probably tell Amazon to switch it back but at this point I'd rather just see this through and figure out where to go from there.
In my case I didn't remove the back. What I did initially was just plug it into the charger. At first it didn't even turn on then, but after a little bit the backlight did turn on in charging mode. Then it would work on the initial boot but not come on after it first turned off, and then after a while that ended and it just worked normally. FWIW, my battery was at 0 or 1% when I got it and around 15% when it started working completely correct, so it possibly is related to the charge level.

Charged it to 100% and didn't work. Oh well, my replacement will be here tomorrow. I'm pretty sure they forgot to connect the display connector or something. I can take screenshots and look at the screenshots through my computer with the tablet connected and even navigate through the menus and things. Don't know how quality control missed the tablet that didn't even have a connected display. Thanks for the help and good luck on deciding on a new tablet.
Mine arrived on Tuesday with a dead screen as well. And I had ordered mine from Samsung. Horrible customer service BTW.

Has anyone else experienced battery swelling in the tab s 8.4 T700? As per a previous post of mine, mine was stuck with the screen on in download mode overnight until I woke up and flashed a workable ROM on it.
As of this afternoon when i took it out of it's case to appreciate it, it has a distinct swelling directly in the middle of the back of the tabket, just below the camera. There is definitely a distinct hump on the back.
Should I take it back?
I have one Knox count to void warranty, and I am running a firmware that is not from the country in which I bought the tablet.
Will I be knocked back for warranty?
Personally I would take it back as would be worried that it might get worse. As for warranty problems, you can only try and see what happens.
Stick your country's firmware back on first and hopefully they won't notice that knox has been tripped.

Ever seen a battery fire on one of these puppies? You don't want to. Something between a hand grenade and a blow torch. DEFINITELY take it back if you think there is battery swelling. Even if this is just a warped back you want to replace it.
If you are within your return window at the retailer warranty will not be an issue. Just tell them it is defective.
** Caveat - I do not know where on the Tab S the battery is located and it could be something else completely.
Can you post a pic of the problem?

I'm going to take it into the service centre to get it checked out this afternoon. I can't really post a photo of it. At the moment the swelling is ever so slight that a photo barely picks it up. Last night though, when I was using it a lot and it heated up, the swelling was pretty significant.
I agree that it's a very dangerous thing. I worry about getting knocked by for warranty because of knox, but I'll just not mention I did any firmware etc and see what they say. Hopefully they won't notice it. I will just change the language settings into Chinese before I hand it to them if necessary.
Either way, they've quoted my 400RMB for a new battery and back and labour if I need to pay it. That's like $65. I can cope with that. Pretty ****ty experience to have on the second day of owning the thing, but then again, so was soft-bricking it and not knowing if I'd have a working tablet at all.
Good luck. Flashing is not without its risks. Hopefully they will just exchange it no problem. Just point out the overheating and swelling and don't mention the flash business at all. They will probably just exchange it.
Hi Again,
So I took it in. They agreed on the battery swelling. I will submit it for a return tomorrow (had to muck around with reciepts today) and they say it will take around 3 days before I get a new one back. Things are weird in China.
Hopefully they don't look to far into the software side of things. Being China, and the horrible mentality of much of the service industry here, I am sure they will try to reject me or gouge me for fees or just charge me somehow. I'm pretty sure this will cost me somehow or another. Ah well, whatever. You've gotta accept these things occasionally in life, right?
