if u get a whelp message using firewater, sunshine is ur only way to go

S-off with firewater worked fine for me on the AT&T version with 3.16 hboot (before sunshine even existed). As mentioned, you can always try it, as there is no harm in doing so. Worst that will happen is firewater tells you it won't work.
But if you are on AT&T (don't know if other carriers have hboot 3.16) firewater should work fine.

No idea, as there is also an Ipswich in Massachusetts, USA. Folks need to be specific (as you have kindly done in your "location") as a great many town names happen in multiple different places (especially UK and New England, USA).
In any case, my feeling is firewater is only patched in later hboots, and any phone with hboot 3.16 will probably work. I can only comment on the AT&T version, since that is what I own.

Good to know, thanks. I know firewater doesn't work for newer hboots; but wasn't aware that other versions with hboot 3.16 are not compatible as well.
As you already mentioned, the worst that can happen is OP runs firewater, and he gets the "whelp" message. So its worth a shot.

That won't work. Firewater was an online service. It stopped working once the dev stopped supporting it in December.
Sunshine s-off is the only current working method.

The s5 was never in the cards with me.
I see no reason that we won't have an exploit available pretty quickly. If nothing else, you can do the official HTC unlock now and wait for S-OFF later so you can cover your tracks.

Me neither. Until KNOX is either optional or gone altogether, Samsung will never get my business again. I refuse to support a company so openly anti-developer.

Same about sammy. I vowed id only stick to the nexus line but this m8 looks awesome if it can be rooted.
Hopefully your right and it will be htc dev unlockable from day 1. I doubt it being at&t.

With at&t its hard to tell but the One was HTC Dev unlockable on at&t at launch I thought?
This is why I'm glad I have T-Mobile. Besides the Sony phones (which T-Mobile likely doesn't even ask Sony to lock the bootloader but Sony chooses to do it themselves), T-Mobile is very cool about rooting and custom ROMs. Hell EVERY person at the T-Mobile store we go to has their **** rooted and they have no problem saying it! If an at&t employee did that, guaranteed there would be a job opening.

Original HTC One bootloader unlock was available on day 1 then vanished. I think there are other exploits. I have unlocked the bootloader of almost every Android device I've ever owned (except my Nexus 7 FHD). I *dont* intend on doing that with my M8 unless and until the promised support and updates doesn't materialize. In the best of all possible worlds, someone will come up with a temporary root method so I can at least run Titanium backup.

S-On means you can only install "Secure" software. S-OFF, means you can install whatever you want.
If you want roms, you'll want S-OFF.

Not completely correct, if you want ROMs you just need an unlocked bootloader and a recovery which you can get without S-OFF too...
S-OFF (Security-OFF) = much more control of the entire phone (you can do pretty much everything if you're able to do it)
if you have enough time to spend then read this perfect in depth explanation

It will give u more info.
I know on the m7 it didn't work on phones with emmc 9001 serial. I have got two T-Mobile HTC m8s and firewater worked on both with no problems.
Just flash viper or arhd and try they both have an unsecured boot.img.
And go to the built in superuser app and change settings to apps and adb then try.
If your just gonna flash roms and aren't into development like some then you don't need s-off.
There's a lot of people that don't understand s-off and brick there phones by flashing something that was not for their phone.
So be careful of what you flash if u s-off.
On my m8 my emmc serial begins with 1501.
On play store there's an app called emmc brick bug checker. Use it and it will show you your emmc

HTC stock RUU

Hi.
I have a 100% stock one m8. If i now want to root it and install a rom from here, can i than use the RUU from HTCdev.com to make it 100% stock again? Or will it still say tampered and no OTA updates?
Thanks
Those are not RUUs, they are kernel sources.
Only the US versions of the M8 have RUUs.
Oh, is that all? :/
So the only way to get back to stock is installing a stock backup and recovery?

Which Canadian versions have RUUs? I haven't seen any, although that of course does not mean that they exist.
The Euro, EMEA versions definitely do not have RUUs; as its a common issue that folks here have trouble and don't have an RUU to fall back on. I've seen very few RUUs, the only ones I've seen are AT&T, T-Mob, and I think Verizon and Sprint, as well as GPE and Dev ED RUUs.

My friend bought an M8 last month as an upgrade to his M7.
He called me about a week and a half ago saying he had got an RUU for his phone and have I ever flashed one.
I said no, I haven't. He said he would just follow the instructions.
I just called him now asking about it, and he said it was for his M7. He's just getting into rooting, and wants to try stuff on his old phone to learn.
So yes, there are no Canadian M8 RUUs. Thanks for correcting me and clearing that up.

Yes, but that ruu is only and pure for the people that have s-off ! s-on users with a higher main can't use it as they can't downgrade the bootloader......

It says right in the thread title, its the zip from the RUU, not an RUU itself. And the fact you probably won't find the RUU itself might mean this was leaked and never officially released.
Its also for an extremely old software version, and as Mr Hofs points out, s-off is required. So there is a good reason folks need to use Mr Hofs nandroid thread.

How to get s-off without sunshine

Hi guys. My m8 was s'onned on 4.4.4 and I'd lost my wifi. So I read somewhere you needed to downgrade and flash the OTA manually and for that I needed s'off. Now I really wouldn't mind paying the devs of sunshine 25$ for s'offing because let's face it, they're awesome and they probably have to charge much more for all the work they put in. But unfortunately for me, I'm a kid in my 12th grade and my dad isn't gonna buy me anything but guides for my studies LOL.
I couldn't use firewater because it said htc patched my device and I was out of luck.
So, on a hunch what I did was I flashed cm 11 and then I tried firewater and surprise!! it worked!! my device was s-off'ed
anyway after that I had to go back to the 4.4.3 stock and then upgrade using OTA and everything was alright.
So what I'm basically saying is if you're a cheap bastard like me and can't pay for sunshine and you love sense, you should try that method above. I can't guarantee it'll work for you but it's worth the try, eh?
Note: Please use the above method only if you cannot pay for sunshine. Plus sunshine is much easier to use and you don't have to go through all this hassle
Note 2: If this topic has already been covered by someone else, please feel free to point out so and close this thread.

[Q] Effectiveness of free simunlock procedures.

Hello XDA.
Here's the thing. I have an HTC One M8 from AT&T which I want to unlock, but also I wanna S-OFF it because I like to play (safely) with it making it a developer edition or even a GPE. The thing is I don't wanna spend much money, so it's unlocking (~15 USD) or S-OFF it (25 USD) and then be able to simunlock it for free with two options so far:
Super CID
Universal SIM unlock
I wanna think the best idea is to purchase Sunshine, S-OFF my phone and then try one of those two options. I just need some feedback from someone who has tried them to ensure they're 100% effective and I wont need to end to purchase an unlock code.
Anyway, thanks in advance and best regards.
Nothing is ever a sure thing. And recent hboots have patched the SIM unlock exploit, as well as sunshine s-off. What hboot number?
I'm not personally SIM unlocked. But it seems from the SIM unlock thread, results were fairly positive, at least on older hboot numbers. Again, nothing is every certain; and that goes for the paid methods as well (although most services typically won't charge unless you can unlock).

That's the original (phone's release) hboot version. So I'd say that sunshine s-off should work; and chances of a successful SIM unlock are very good.
