[Q] Effectiveness of free simunlock procedures. - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA.
Here's the thing. I have an HTC One M8 from AT&T which I want to unlock, but also I wanna S-OFF it because I like to play (safely) with it making it a developer edition or even a GPE. The thing is I don't wanna spend much money, so it's unlocking (~15 USD) or S-OFF it (25 USD) and then be able to simunlock it for free with two options so far:
Super CID
Universal SIM unlock
I wanna think the best idea is to purchase Sunshine, S-OFF my phone and then try one of those two options. I just need some feedback from someone who has tried them to ensure they're 100% effective and I wont need to end to purchase an unlock code.
Anyway, thanks in advance and best regards.

Nothing is ever a sure thing. And recent hboots have patched the SIM unlock exploit, as well as sunshine s-off. What hboot number?
I'm not personally SIM unlocked. But it seems from the SIM unlock thread, results were fairly positive, at least on older hboot numbers. Again, nothing is every certain; and that goes for the paid methods as well (although most services typically won't charge unless you can unlock).

That's the original (phone's release) hboot version. So I'd say that sunshine s-off should work; and chances of a successful SIM unlock are very good.

You might want to check out what S-Off is before attempting it. Also if are TMOUK then they charge to unlock normally 20 pounds sterling

I know what S-OFF is I done it on my other HTC one, I bought another one but it was updated to 1.57. I was praying that the unlock code can actually turn off S-OFF too
If you knew what s-off was why would you even think it had anything to do with network unlock which is something entirely different? :silly:
They would be really nice if they did offer factory s-off using a HTC Java card.
Would make life much easier, since you own the device you should be able to do anything you damn please.

I'm afraid not my friend.
Network lock is something that is universal to almost all manufacturers and is implemented by a particular carrier.
S-off or indeed S-on is unique to HTC devices. S-off does not guarantee network unlock.
Also S-off is not required to SIM unlock.

I'm pretty sure it does. I have two HTC one M8 and one of them is S-OFF, it works with another GSM carrier.
If you change your cid to super cid then the phone will be able to be used with any carrier. This is not the same as network unlock, the lock will reactivate if you change your cid back.
To SIM unlock permanently you need to follow this method:

Is S-OFF needed to switch carriers ?

I have a T-Mobile HTC One M8 which is bootloader unlocked and rooted with custom recovery. I also have a custom ROM (Viper One) in there. However I couldn't achieve S-OFF (tough luck! ). So my questions is, can I use the phone with other GSM carriers ? I want to start using AT&T service with this phone. Is it possible to use it without S-OFFing ?
Thanks!

I believe so yes, can't recall seeing anything about unlocking it with S-ON. Have you tried the SunShine method to gain S-OFF?
[Android][HTC S-OFF] SunShine for modern HTC devices
Sure it's $25 but going on most responses it seems well worth the few pennies to gain that extra "freedom". Something to consider perhaps...

Thanks BerndM! Appreciate the response.
Turns out I need S-Off to use other carriers. Will probably buy Sunshine's application for S-Off
You only need S-OFF if your phone is SIM-locked but you can use a pay service to remove the SIM-lock. Unless you have a CDMA phone and are trying to use a GSM SIM in it, in which case probably to stop now...

Isn't it better to pay $25 to our devs and get S-OFF instead of paying some corporate guys just to get my SIM lock removed ? Just my thought
Depends if you have to pay or not...
In the UK, not all operators charge to SIM-unlock (that's if the phone even is to begin with, most don't bother these days)

Any new S-Off way yet?

Is there a new way to achieve S-Off ? I tried Firewater but I get the message that HTC has blocked that way of getting s-Off I guess cause my phone was updated.

Ok thanks, $25 isn't bad at all I'm surprised cause all my other phones I've ever did S-Off on the software was free but I don't mind supporting the developers, they deserve it. Thanks again

It is better to give 25$ to unlock everything rather than to pay some guy who only sim unlocks it.

Yeah I agree and it's the least I could since I'm always flashing a Rom or mod that someone makes and doesn't charge, so I always like to give back to this community of developers. This community has always been there for me thru every phone I've had, and the people that use it always help each other out. Can't wait till payday cause it's the first thing I'm doing with my paycheck lol
On http://theroot.ninja/ i downloaded the APK, im going to have to install a stock rom due to it says it wont work on insert coins rom, but a quick question before i do any of that when does it ask me to donate the $25 ? after it runs its test to make sure it works and also what kind of payments do they accept? if anyone knows thanks in advance everyone!

Has anyone tried this for S-OFF

I found this site, http://rumrunner.us/ Does anyone know if this is legit or just a virus waiting to happen? It looks pretty legit to me. Thanks for your input, it would be great if we could get s-off for our device!

Well this (semi) is good news, we went from not hearing at all of S-OFF, to apparently having it in 2 weeks.
Now, there's now way in heck I'm paying $25 for S-OFF, thats ridiculous. But I'm sure some people will. Especially if it allows our device to be carrier unlocked, which it could.
I'll pay it sucks but it is what it is cause I know its a pain in the a%# too find vulnerabilitys too make s-off possible!!
I am glad I could bring that to you guys's attention

How to S-OFF for free on Nougat?

Hello,
I'm currently trying to find out how to install a rom matching to my region. I understand that I need S-OFF for that.
Sadly, I cannot find out how to make s-off. All I hear, even in those threads here, is advertisement for an app where you actually pay for a developer functionality (Sunshine). I also tried rumrunner, but that didnt work either.
It was rumrunner 0.5 on my M9 with Version 4.30.617.2. My current cid is: BS_US002
There is no other way to S-OFF your phone unless Sunshine.
I had to do it too.
Yeah it cost money but its really easy.
As stated, no way. You have 3 options, all will cost.
1. Sunshine app.
2. XTClip. (I think thats the name?).
3. Take it to a phone repair shop.
Otherwise, no free way. Sunshine app is worth paying for as it walks you through the process. If you have any problems they (the devs) will help you sort it out. Your money goes to paying staff for the hard work they do finding exploits to give us, the common everyday users, a little bit of freedom from these ever increasingly over-zealous corporations who will do anything to put us in a box and feed us crumbs so we do what they want so they can monitise us.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Like in many, many other threads, YOU CANNOT get sunshine for free. To be honest it even isn't that expensive. It is worth it as the app is so simple. The devs that created it have bricked a lot of m9's in the process of getting s-off for us.
Anyway, u still can't use sunshine on nougat. Use this thread (https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...one-m9-nougat-downgrade-s-off-t3554665/page2)
to help u to downgrade to marshmallow and run sunshine.
Hope this helps,
Jev

I don't know where you got that information from. C.f.: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q8GKXw3EDVGtAoiu36MdeVqMPRJba1WlF5TZXKQgNgA/htmlview
Only temp-root isn't supported on nougat. But that's not a big deal since you can just unlock the bootloader and flash SuperSU or Magisk via TWRP.

Oh, I was pretty sure I read that it didn't work on nougat. Jeez, I went through all that guide to downgrade to marshmallow for nothing. Dang it.
EDIT: Just checked the sunshine website and it has been updated since I last attempted s-off. Sorry, I'll stop suggesting that downgrade now!
Anyway thanks,

HTC M9
Hello every one, I'm new in HTC, I tried to install a new rom on my HTC M9 (stuck in bootloop) but it's not working, I've tried factory reset, many roms, I read almost all posts on the net (blogs) without success.
Model : HTC_HIMAUHL
Build : 3.35.401.12
CID : HTC__247
HBoot : 1.0.0.0000
MID : 0PJA10000
Security : CURITY FAILED (REMOTE: UNKNOWN COMMAND)
Region : HTC-FRA-Bouygues
I tried to set my phone S-off without success as well, unfortunately I have no way to pay sunshine for that, I live in a third world country.
please could you help, and thx in davance.
Please read the ReadMe thread. The RUU section of that thread contains everything you need for recovering your phone.
There still is no free S-OFF method and chances are high that there never will be one.
Just a friendly advice: I'd delete my IMEI from my post if I were you. Others can use it for scam.

That's not possible. HTCdev can only be used for unlocking the bootloader since HTC doesn't want users to get S-OFF on their devices. They definitely won't provide a way to get S-OFF. Chances are high that the device was already set S-OFF by a previous owner.
Firewater isn't compatible with the M9, btw. I haven't heard about chimera tool, though.

So I did a dumb thing I paid for the 'sunshine app'
With the 'Out-of-app' purchase and then downloaded the app but the app crashes every time...
