So far I think it's OK. I used to have Note 3 and the Wi-Fi calling was bad.
What do you think?
So far I think it's fantastic. Just to put that in perspective though, I'm coming from AT&T, which means two cans and a string might have been an improvement.
Works perfect
My wi-fi calling sucks. It's laggy. People on the other side of the phone seem to hear 1 out of 4 words. My network speeds generally seem fine, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I'm going to try on another wireless network other than my home the first chance I get.

What exactly is sip alg and why does it need to be on for quality Wifi calling (genuinely curious, although Wifi calling works without issue for me at home).

I have an ASUS RT-N66U. I also don't know what a sip alg is, but I some quick googling found me this webpage:
Asus RT-N66U
Current Status: Not Compatible
Recommendation: Replace device
Comments:
This router is not SIP Compatible. It has no SIP ALG or SIP Fixup options and does not work with polycom, aastra or cisco phones.

No clue if that's something that has been fixed that I might be able to resolve with a firmware upgrade. Nice catch!
If your WiFi signal sucks so will ur call. Same as cell service. U need good signal and don't cover the top of the phones. This beast suffers from death grip

Theres your answer to one.
Try turning your firewall on your router off. What could be happening is one of the listening ports for the wifi calling is being blocked so call clairty is being degraded. Also if you are running on 5k rather than the lower band for your cells wifi switch back. You need a slower but more reliable stream.
Most of the issues are because of nat
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation
but can be solved if your router has a sip alg function. Check this forum from tmo it has some of the ports you need to make sure u have open if you dont turn off the firewall on your router

Gonna disagree with this a little, as 2.4 Ghz tends to be more congested and more interference-prone. Use 5 GHz WiFi if you can.
I'vs used WiFi calling on both WiFi frequencies with no issue, but I have a $250 pro-level access point that I use.

That can be true the only issue with 5 k is its signal penetration. if you have to go between walls 5k will lose alot of quality.
I use 5ghz all the time. Definitely not the issue. It could be a router firmware issue.
To the op This issue probably won't get resolved if you are using phone at work . everyone else is on WiFi also. Unless u work in office with 3 employees. Do a video screen record with phone on speaker while ur at work so we can see what is going on and we can help if we can.
This is my first wifi calling enabled phone, but so far, it has been great on Wifi calling. I've been using it since I arrived in London Saturday on a crappy hotel wifi connection with perfect results. Before that I used it in a grocery store and my basement back in the states where I never have cell reception...also great results.
Now that I seem to have international data roaming sorted, I'm feeling much better about my choice of phones.

I'm going to ask this, but I'll probably be killed with insults, anyway whats the big deal with wifi calling? I have unlimited phone calls, so how come everyone is so jazzed about wifi calling?
Just Curious, I have used wifi calling before on my old Vibrant and when I was talking on my phone in the house it was great, then walk out to my car and drive somewhere it would drop the call because the phone switched from wifi to network. Thats just not going to work for me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they have the same release day?
Not really sure how to properly start a bounty thread, and direction is appreciated. Also don't know if this is even possible as I know porting wifi calling has proven to be nearly impossible on other devices, e.g. Nexus S. However, doesn't hurt to ask and I know it was done on Nexus One. Am using Galaxy Nexus on TMo, if that makes any difference.
Really, desperately need wifi calling for reception purposes in my apartment. Left TMo's Galaxy S2 for the Galaxy Nexus, love everything about it except lack of reception in home.
I know I can utilize Google Voice, but I need to be able to use my TMo number for both incoming and outgoing calls as well as texts, and not interested in porting my mobile number to Google.
I'm willing to fork over $100 for working wifi calling, if anyone is up to the challenge... if even possible...
Also, if anyone has alternate suggestion (not Google Voice, something that utilizes TMo mobile number, would be GREATLY appreciated!!
If this is possible that would be awesome. But I believe UMA is strictly a tmo thing

I use Groove IP app exclusively for calls, both over wifi and 3G/HSPA+. I am on the T-mobile $30/unlimited data/100min plan, so it is a must for me. It works great! and only a few bucks on the market. You will need a Google Voice account, and to set it to ring Google Talk, and maybe a little other setup, but it is pretty simple.

Verizon has a network extender that plugs into your home internet connection. It gives you a cell signal in your house and routes it over the internet back to Verizon. There is no monthly fee just a charge of the device. $250 i think. Maybe TMo has a similar device.

TMo does have a signal booster device, but it cannot be implemented in shared-wall structures (i.e. apartment buildings). Also, have many places, such as family homes, with lousy in-door coverage where wi-fi calling makes all the difference in the world.
i called tmo last month i fact complaining of a low signal in my town home. they sent me a signal booster for free.. from 1 bar downstairs to now 5 bars

Well I'm not scared of the signal booster police!
Unfortunately they check your address to verify. NO, I don't know if/how they can verify ALL shared wall structures, but for someone like me with "Apt. 5J" attached to my address it's not difficult. The issue is you need to register your address in case of emergency, as 911 cannot definitely and accurately determine your address if making a call using signal booster. So the issue is that if a neighbor picks up your signal without knowing and makes an emergency call, 911 may not be able to identify address. I know it's a long shot but it's not MY rule. And afaik, you cannot lock the signal to exclude others as you can with wifi.

I think the booster is tied to your cell account... so you might have a fun surprise.
The wifi calling was awesome but ultimately its property of T-Mobile and doesn't work on ICS. T-Mobile must update it before even attempting to porting it over.
CM team has used it a ton. Maybe they'll implement it in their CM9 rom. But I suspect they'll be busy just ironing out the bugs for a while.
Plus T-Mobile is doing away with wifi calling as we know it. I BELIEVE they're implementing a new system and probably going to charge for it.
Hopefully T-Mobile gets this working on some ICS (Nexus?) when it releases.

You're correct that wifi calling is very proprietary to T-Mobile and from what I understand (I'm not a developer whatsoever), is extremely difficult to impossible to port. I've been watching them try it on Nexus S since its release a year ago.
Unfortunately T-Mobile won't make it available to a non-branded TMo phone so unless Galaxy Nexus is released directly by TMo (which I doubt will happen), it won't happen even when they update it for their own ICS devices.
ALso, TMo did in fact change the implementation of their wifi calling- it's already been released on new devices such as TMo Galaxy S2 and HTC Amaze. However they are not and will not be charging for it (in fact they've again enabled free calls that don't use plan minutes when calling on wifi), it has just changed the way it's handled (better performance). Little to no noticeable change to end users.
Would be great if CM team get it working on Galaxy Nexus!
Good thoughts, thanks!

The problem on the Nexus S has nothing to do with the Wifi Calling app (which is actually made by Kineto), the problem is the radio interface layer (from Samsung) which is a binary blob. It does not support what the Wifi calling software requires to work (authentication calls mainly). Kineto blames Google for not "requesting" this feature from Samsung.
Getting the Kineto app up and working was really not that difficult. The only thing that needed to be changed was an audio library because the constructor was changed from Froyo to Gingerbread. That had nothing to do with the Kineto/Wifi calling software other than it used that constructor.

Every time I turn on WiFi and it initiates WiFi Calling, I notice that the GPS signal comes on for about 5-10seconds. Why would it pull my GPS location when starting WiFi calling?
Is this for 911 calling (hopefully), or is this to prevent you from using WiFi calling internationally to make free calls back home to the US?

That is what I am worried about. I am actually headed to Canada tomorrow and thinking I want to try it from a Tim Hortons or something but I am a little bit chicken haha.
It doesn't seem fair that they would do that... It doesn't matter/cost anything to them where I am connecting over WiFi from as long as I am not connecting via a tower.

ip is assigned by t-mobile, so it wouldn't necessarily very by location.
while yes, they could look it up, that would use their resources, and they would much rather use your battery and abuse your privacy.

Bump. I have been noticing this since updating to ICS. How do I get it to stop?
does anyone else that came to this phone from another t-mobile phone find that the wifi calling is just awful? i had perfect wifi calling on my g2 and mytouch4gslide but now, and although this phone as far as regular performance goes is a million times better in every other department, wifi calling (which i need because i get terrible signal in my house) is SO hit or miss. sometimes i'll get a call and answer it and its just blank silence. the other person will claim to be able to hear me when we finally disconnect and call each other back, but i hear absolutely nothing, like as if the phone was turned off, not even any dead air. sometimes i'll go to dial someone and the dial button just won't even work. it depresses and nothing happens. then a minute later it starts dialing. sometimes people say they call me and it goes straight to voicemail. i'd say its roughly 50/50 whether or not i get a good wifi calling experience or not. is there something with my router that maybe would help to make the experience better? certain settings i should have? i'm not really very experienced with setting up routers. i pretty much just go default down the line and then setup a password and thats it. i've tried clearing data on the wifi calling a couple times but it really hasn't helped. would appreciate any input because at this point its getting to where if i'm expecting calls i'll just have to turn wifi off and hope my fluctuating regular signal is good enough to get the call (usually is fine in my house for calls just practically unusable for data).
thanks
Try to get a range extender from tmo. WiFi calling is unreliable and from what I've seen on their forums they've done nothing to remedy it.

It worked better on your other phones because those phones WiFi calling utilized the kinecto servers. Since now they've switched to IMS, WIFI calling has been kinda crappy.

I have been using my Galaxy S3 for the last couple of months , and I just don't get the range from wifi calling like I have with my other T-Mobile phones. When I get down to 2 bars of wifi signal my S3 drops wifi calling and searches for cell signal. This greatly reduces my wifi calling range around my house. All of my other T-Mobile phones keep wifi calling active until I completely lose wifi signal. Is there a script or tweak that can be made to make wifi calling active until wifi signal is lost? I have searched many times but I just can't seem to find any info. Wow! I had long forgot about that! The only issue here is you will have to redo this every time you reboot as it does not stick. I spent a good bit of time on this back on ICS, but ended up moving on to other things. I just tested and on 4.3, it does work by just entering *#0011#, but as has always been the case, it turns back on if you reboot.

Even when I set my phone to wifi calling only, the S3 still drops wifi calling with 2 bars of wifi signal left. It must have something to do with the S3 wifi calling app itself. With my last 3 T-mobile phones which were a G2x, exhibit 4g and optimus L9 I was able to get 100ft + outside my house before I lost wifi calling. With the S3 i cant even get 5 feet and I lose it.

I've found the wifi signal indicator to be far from accurate in terms of signal strength. For example, when you are at 3 bars, the signal strength might be at 30-40% already. 2 bars is a very weak signal, which is why wifi calling is disabling itself.
There are a couple things you can try. First is getting on the MD5 train. Flash an MD5 ROM along with the MD5 firmware. Get the firmware here: https://db.tt/5C5M8FpD. WARNING, it is the for SGH-T999 only and will brick you if you have a variant (n/l/v) For ROM, S3Rx or Dandroid, if I'm recommending.
Also, check with your router to verify which standard the phone is using. 2.4GHz has a longer range than 5GHz. Also, make sure it's not using 802.11b. Mine was doing this. Had to disable it in the router.
Keep the router away from other electronics, elevate it as much as possible. If the router has external antennas (like the Linksys WRT54GL), you can get high gain antennas (which do help if you know what you're doing), but aiming them properly is important. http://weekendtechnotes.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/antennaradiationpattern2.jpg for reference. Understanding how the signals work may help you in your situation. And remember, the more walls and objects the signal has to penetrate to get to your device, the weaker it gets. A few walls can easily half it's effective range. I don't know what router you are using so no more on this for now.
That's about all the information that I can give you without knowing more about your situation.
Great info from aerowinder! To add, if you are up for it, install inSSIDer from the store. Make sure you aren't using a heavily crowded WiFi channel. Should be easy enough for most to just look at its graphs and know if it's overcrowded.
