[Q] Anyone else have a tight micro USB port? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just picked up my new LG G3 two days ago. Does anyone else have a hard time plugging the micro usb cable into their phone? I have to sit their for a little bit and wiggle the plug around to get it into the phone. Never had this issue with a micro usb device before. Wanted to know if this is normal for this phone,

I am experiencing the same thing you are.. seems like the charging cable teeth seem to be too snug..

I have the T-Mobile g3 and I do have that issue. As though the port is not aligned properly. I also had the sprint g3 before I traded it for my T-Mobile one and had no issue with it. I assume it's normal random small defects that can come with any man made device.

Yep same here

It's not tight, it's angled slightly. Basically you're plugging it in upwards but also tilted in towards the back a little. I think I'm getting used to it the more I do it.
Some connectors are more friendly about it than others too.

Spit on it first and go really slow. If its still too tight start with something smaller and work your way up.

But yes, it is a bit tougher to plug in the micro usb plug into the port than most other phones I've used. Also, some micro usb cables plug in much easier than certain others. The specific LG charger is almost very hard to plug in but my older HP Touchpad charger plugs in with no problem.

Do you guys think it's a defect worth exchanging the phone for?

samehere. Just tilt the usb cord tip downward.

No. It's not the phone. It's the cable. My other cables plug with no trouble (same thing with the G2)

Actually, I tried mutliple cables and have had the same problem with all of them. It is worse with some than others.

Same problem here. Slightly tilting the USB cable does the trick.

The tighter the better
I've has many phones where the USB port is poor quality. This one feels solid. I'm very impressed with this phone

Yup, like I said in my previous post, other cable plugs in normally, just the g3's default cable that's a bit tight but it's no biggie.

My experience was with all cables having the problem. I exchanged it at Best Buy and the new one is a big improvement.

Loose USB power connector

I've noticed after a couple of weeks of use (= quite a lot of charging) that he usb connector as become quite loose. I have to position the cable carefully and then not move the device while charging or the orange charge light goes out and it stops.
I can see this being more of a prob in a car mount than on my desk but it's a pain. Wondering whether this will come under the warranty.
Ofcourse it will. Unless they can prove its user error and/or bad handling. This depends on law per country or in eu.

I know other people who have the micro usb connecter for a long time and are using a cradle, car charger and other stuff a lot (not desire, different device). But no problems at all with the micro-usb connector. Never had any problems with the mini-usb connector as well. Don't see why it would suddenly be a problem now.
It feels quite solid, think it works great on my desktop cradle as well.

oh really? You don't see a problem here? LOL
Mines wobbled since the start, luckily it hasn't come loose whilst charging, hopefully it won't or its going straight back.
Exact same observation here and it's only become an issue in the past 3 days for me after more than 2 months in use. If I don't keep it still and without even the slightest forces pushing/pulling either side, the USB connection drops.

Yeah - it was fine and now it's wobbly and fussy. Experience suggests that this is the start of a slow decline that ends up with selotape.

Having a cradle and carkit with connector myself, and using it for quite some time: no, I don't see a problem.
I never had any problems with charging connectors, ever.
But you get my credits for remembering this, kudos.
As I am currently importing micro usb adapters, cradle and cables I do see quite some differences.
Micro usb connectors from some suppliers are more loose than others. The original is still rock solid here, even after some weeks of use.
The same with different cradles I've tried. Some fit perfectly while others hold the phone in place only with the micro usb. So the weight is all on the connector which means its a bad cradle.
Sure, charging stripes can solve the problem of a bad cradle, but so does a decently made cradle which is actually made for the Desire and supports it properly.

[Q] Problems with the Samsung OEM data/charge cable

Any micro USB cables that you guys would recommend over the OEM original cable.
I seem to be one of the very few that have problems with the original cable fitting snuggly. Yes, the door is open all the way til it clicks, yet the cable easily falls out.
If anyone has a suggestion of another cable or has the same problem with a fix that I just somehow missed after searching for a couple of days, it would be greatly appreciated.
I had the same problem. After about a month of use it just came completely loose and would only stay in if I propped it up a certain way. I tried a friend's charger and it worked fine (likewise my charger was loose on his captivate).
I just took the usb cable from my external hard drive and that one fits very snuggly, unfortunately it is also much shorter
I'm also having this issue. I wonder why...

Yes, this is exactly what I have to do for mine to charge. So I guess I'll have to just start looking for one that will work for me. It seems just any other standard micro USB cable will do the trick. Thanks a lot my friend.

Well upon further inspection, you can see how the top of the phone is curved and if you look at with the USB door open from the top and tilted slightly back you can see how the jack actually looks crooked inside the phone. I'm quite sure that this is because of the curved top parallel to the circuit board that has the jack is too tall. And I think for some reason I might need to trim down the micro end a bit on the front side..it looks like its hitting the front side of the phone.
I'm looking for a replacement cable as well...even OEM is fine. The case around mine cracked off one night when I feel asleep playing on my phone. Mine was always kind of loose compared to the att charging cable which is nice and tight. Does radio shack carry cables like this?

i called AT&T about this with my cappy and they said that the charging port was bad and sent me a new phone , thats been 3 mo ago and the problem hasnt recurred.
(just a thought)
Search Amazon for "blackberry usb cable micro usb". The first result should be it, it's a very high quality, shielded cable. To get a solid, snug fit I suggest a razor or a knife to easily cut back some of the rubber around the micro tip. Works amazingly well. I could even make it work before I trimmed it.
just to elaborate, the specific micro end is called a "micro b " usb connection.
not to be confused with mini or micro a
of course the other end is just standard.
The place I work has a 5' nice quality cable that fits my Captivate tight. They got them to go with the 2100mA USB Car Charger we sell. Cost on the cable is $ 4.99 plus shipping (about $2.99 first class parcel).

I'm not sure if its quality, or just chance, but I've found that only some 3rd-party cables will work. I've tried a blackberry one that didn't work, and a really cheap one that did.
I would suggest keeping the one you got from samsung, just in case.
I'd like to know if anyone else had issues with cables not working?
I got a Samsung cable designed for the galaxy S on Amazon for like $6 with free shipping.

I had the same problem.
I used some tools(hammer, knife, etc) to fix the cable.
Now my cable works fine!!

I just used a razor blade to trim the rubber back, works great.
If you look at your cable. The black part and the silver part(part that goes in your phone) is not in a straight line.
Just try to make it straight. And use a knife to cut the rubber of the edge a little bit.
That should do the trick.

I haven't read all of the posts so I don't know if someone has already posted a solution to this problem, so I'll just answer.
I had this same problem. If you notice their are two tiny metal teeth that lock the charger into the phone. These teeth no longer stick out as far as they used to. That is why you are having this problem. The teeth are not bent. It is the micro usb plug that is around it. All that you need to do is give it a firm bush on the table. Bend the plug away from the teeth so that they stick out more. This fixed my problem.
When you put it back into your phone, you will notice that the plug is no longer in the phone at an angle.

You should saved me from buying 3 more cables. I distroyed my OEM cable to make a jig because I bricked my phone. I ordered 3 sets of cables and they all had the same problem.... Usb kept popping off. So I was just about to go out and order 3 more sets if cables, this time OEM untill I decided to read this tread. It never occured to me that it was fitting in well because of the extra rubber on the connector. I trimmed it down and now the cable snapped in perfectly like it was supposed to. Thanks for the fix!

I know this is getting old, but it took me about 2 hours to find an answer that WASN'T recommending to just make sure the slider was all the way open. For no reason at all, my phone cable just wouldn't hold a real connection this morning... your answer saved the day
For cables that are good quality and cheap, go to www.meritline.com ....... I have never gotten a bad cable from them, typically I use their HDMI cables but the USB cables are less complex and work just as well. My last usb cable was one of theirs.

Loose mini USB port

I just noticed my mini USB port is fairly loose that when the usb cable is angled at a particular direction charging stops.
I tried the same cable at two other phones and no problem. I visually inspected the port and it seems the metal that surround and supports the mini usb broke at the side making the top and bottom part separate from each other. It makes the port not a snug fit but a losse fit... And so I wonder if anyone else had this issue? I've only had my S3 for a few months and I use it roughly the same as my old phones (yes, I do use it while charging) and they didn't have this problem... Is it really that easy to break or do I seem to be mistreating it?
Note: The small pointy thing is ok, so I can still charge and do other stuff. Only issue is that it's a loose fit.

I was just dealing with this last night. It may be a little flimsy. Hopefully it doesn't get worse
I know... If it gets worse, I hope I don't get caught somewhere having unable to flash a stock rom via odin... To claim a clean warranty... Afterall, the damage is on the hardware and can be seen outside
Is it the original cable? I know my charger cable is stupid loose but my USB cable is fine.

I'll have to check with Wireless Wave where I bought the phone... Because it's either they send it for repair which would take weeks and they'd give me a crappy temporary phone... Or if I'm lucky replace it on the spot... Which I doubt... So I'll have to weigh in the options... It's not much of an issue right now but pretty sure it will be soon enough so I have to ask them soon... I'm just doing some poking around to see if other people experience this as well if it's a fairly "common" issue then they might give me a replacement if I tell them fixing wouldn't help because it may just happen again.

Stock Cable > Hard to Plug on the Charging Port of the Phone

I just purchased this unit. is it normal that the Stock Cable is Hard to Plug on the Charging Port of the Phone..
i need to try so many times before i can plug the charging cable to charging port of the phone before i can plug it successfully. i'm thinking of breaking the charging port if this is the case? Anyone who have the same concern? Thanks

I noticed this as well. hopefully if something gets broken its more likely to be the connector on the cable than the charging port. I have tried a few other cables as well and all are pretty difficult to insert.
Well the way I see it would you rather have it flop around and be loose, or have a night tight fit?
On a more serious note I had the same issue when I first recieved my F400S. After a week or so it got better, you can always try an older micro usb cable thats more broken in to avoid this issue.
when i first got the phone it was like what you've desribed. but after a while, it wasn't an issue anymore, i guess its a good sign that the phone is brand spanking new.
Same for me, hard To plug in ...

Hi,
I tilt the usb-connector up (just a bit) while plugging it in.
Greetz
It requires a downward angle tilting towards the device to insert.
Same for me, but once you're using qi charging and Wi-Fi file transfer, you'll hardly ever use the port.
got it! it was like virg** phone. haha..
wow same issue here.

Only way to get it in is by tilting the cable downward. Tried few cables, they are all doing the same thing. Exchange perhaps?

Tilting the cable to plug in seems to be the norm on pretty much every G3. I doubt exchanging it will help.
Once you've done it for a while, it should become pretty easy to do.
Tilting the cable and just dealing with it are fine, but what happens when you stay finding usb cables that don't want to charge your G3 properly? I have one (very nice) 10ft cable and my phone plays a game of connecting and disconnecting while trying to charge with this cord. This courts does not give me the same problems on other devices. However the G3 charges just fine on all my other cables. Not using this cable is an obvious answer but i worry that the problem could get worse and what if I start having problems with other chargers?
For now, the solution is to tilt the cord slightly downward (or upward, depending on your perspective) as the port is just sliiiiightly more flush with the opening. My advice is to get used to doing this. A broken charger port is really a PITA, so taking an extra 2 seconds to plug it in is the prudent choice. My dad gave me a lot of good advice when I was growing up, and one of the gems turns out to be "don't force things."
As mentioned, once we get some wireless charging back covers on a more accessible basis, we'll all just use wireless charging and never plug in again. Except in the car.
The cable from my old GS4 plugs in very very easily. I haven't tried charging with it tho. I use it mainly for usb mtp.
Posted from my LG-D850
Difficult at first. It did get better for me though. I too thought i had damaged it or that it had shipped that way. And I also thought I was just breaking it more each time I charged and contemplated exchanging LOL. Make sure cord is facing the right way first (im still trying to put it in upside down sometimes), then you do have to tilt it down a bit to get in initially and then it tilts slightly up before fully inserting. It was very diificult to do the first couple days. Day 5 and its way easy. Hope this has helped and put your mind at ease This is my first Android phone and i'm luvin it!
the past new phones i had. was always hard at first to plug it in.
just gotta lube it up
Any new updates on this? I guess tilting the cable a bit is working, but will it ever get to the point it will go straight in? It really appears that this is not a defect but a LG design for the port.

I agree with what was previously stated, after a week with phone, I've become used to putting the cable in. I'm pleased with the tight fit as I've had devices where it feels loose and unsecured.

Normal for the micro USB charging cable to "wiggle" in the port?

Not having a single problem with it charging, just surprised you can easily move the cable when plugged in from left to right or up or down, tried 4 different cables, all the same, is this just normal for micro USB to prevent it from being broken by a yank? Thanks in advance.

I noticed it immediately but I'm trying to ignore it.
Alright so apparently it is normal? Just bothers me as on my Note 2 I eventually had to end up wrapping the charging cord around the phone to hold the charging cord in the port otherwise it wouldn't charge at all (port got SUPER loose), and didn't want that to happen again.
I guess maybe there is "play" in it so that if someone does yank the cord it doesn't just snap off inside, but I have no idea, glad to know I'm not alone though and apparently it is the norm for the Note 4.
Doh, just noticed we can always use the warranty @ AT&T stores to exchange\swap out for up to an entire year, I was paranoid as I thought I only had 14 days and after that it was in Samsungs hands (people that have to deal with Samsung's support seem to end up very unhappy) so I'm far less stressed about it now. I still am considering a Squaretrade warranty, anyone here used them? I keep hearing good things but wasn't sure if they are worth it, but most people seem to get a new phone even if water damaged\broken with 2 days. Anyone here have experience with Squaretrade?
