Best keyboard? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not quite satisfied with stock and since I've used Swype forever on my previous devices, I'm not up to speed on the keyboard front and especially not for super-hires 10.5" tablets. Anyone running any particular ones they're happy with?

Try swiftkey. Its free and has a tablet mode (thumb typing). Swype and the likes don't work for me on a tablet as there's too much real estate to cover.

I use AI on my phone, it is my dd keyboard?. Best prediction capabilities for me. However, its a pay app and you have pay separate for the tab model. Swiftkey is free and has tab mode where it splits the right and left side of the keyboard, bringing them closer to the edge.

Love SwiftKey. You get cursor keys, and, man! Some really great themes! After SwiftKey learns you, it's almost as if it can read your mind.

I use Thumb Keyboard. You can setup text shortcuts and substitutions. It's good for 1 key passwords and infomation like email address, credit card numbers, etc. It makes entering information much easier and faster.

Oh How I Miss the SII Keyboard

I got the S3 after having the Evo and then the SII. The SII was a step up in almost every way from the EVo but the big step down for me in the S3 is the keyboard. Why does it have so many more problems then the S2 keyboard?
I tried other keyboards that are supposed to be like the S2 but none are as good.

I love Swype myself but if you want a good standard keyboard the stock ICS keyboard I have attached is better than both the S2 and S3 stock keyboards IMO.

Worthy S Note replacement app?

This 3-4 seconds lag when creating a new note is becoming very frustrating for me, especially as I often use it.
So is there any worthy replacement of it? I know I won't be able use any alternatives with S-Pen pull out but that's no problem.
Thanks in advance.
PS: I mean an app which will support S-Pen input like S-Note, I won't be using it without S-Pen.

Thanks for your replies guys. Tried Papyrus, didn't like it much. My Story, good app, but I don't need it. I've installed the Handrite one, it'll come useful when taking long notes. But atm, S-Note still looks better than others and I think I don't have any other, better options.

Evernote?
I've switched over to Evernote combined with Skitch. Skitch works quite well with the S-Pen in terms of drawing.

How do you type on your Nexus?

I have the OG Nexus 7 and I find typing on it to be a pain which is really my only complaint about the 7 inch form factor. I find it equally difficult in portrait and landscape. I'm getting ready to purchase the new Nexus 7 and the fact that I can hardly type on my old one keeps weighing on my mind. So what do you guys do to type easier on your Nexus 7's?

Wha? There's a tablet version of swiftkey? Gonna have to find that for sure. I loaded up the normal one and it works, but I'm guessing a tablet version has a lot better layout/size/shape of the keys.
I'm using the phone version of SwiftKey, at first it was a bit hard to type but when you're accustomed to it, you can't change keyboard (I don't even want to use the tablet version.) I guess the 7 inches plays a role here.

Forgot I bought thumb keyboard a long time ago. Just installed it and so far it seems much better. The keyboard itself seems less sensitive o am getting less double clicks.

I find it the perfect size for me to type on in portrait mode - way too wide in landscape (at least with my thumbs). I use Ultra Keyboard because I've always had HTC phones and am used to the keyboard layout. Ultra Keyboard is the only one that I found that duplicates that layout.
The only problem that I've got with the stock keyboard is that the layout is different than on my phone. Other than that, I've turned up the autocorrect aggressiveness, and it catches nearly every error that I make. Of late, I've been finding that the stock android keyboard is better than the ones you can purchase off the Play Store. I think it's because Google's putting a ton of work on the general look and feel of their OS, and the keyboard is a major part of that.

Folks at Samsung are busy laughing maniacally at all the update questions on the interwebs. Once they are done laughing you will know that they don't really bother unless it helps sell something more - like the Gear. So enjoy your 4.3 for a long time to come. (In my case until Google puts out a usable Nexus 10 2014.)
highly doubt this would happen given the sheer amount of Software optimization Samsung would need to do. Perhaps if we are lucky a custom Rom with 4.4
I would be happy enough if they release a stable update which gets rid of the occasional lags and makes it more fluid. Even if it would be based on 4.3
Sent by my Note 10.1 2014
Well, i read that Galaxy note 3 and another device is getting KitKat update in January, so i am crossing my fingers and hoping that Samsung releases an update for our device too.
No need to cross fingers. I would be surprised if we don't have 4.4 by spring.

Absolutely! Guys, there is one sure thing about Sammy, don't expect any updates until a year later. I purchased the Note2 the same day of release from T-Mobile, a year later I purchased the Note3. I given my Note2 to my wife. A few months later, she gets a update. Now, since my Note 10.1 2014 edition isn't through a carrier, I still wouldn't hold my breath.

I figured it's pretty much a waiting game. I really don't have much trouble anyway other than bt keyboard connectivity ( logitech k810 drops connection with more than 10 seconds inactivity) samsung keyboard is the culprit I'm sure since even with installing swift key and external keyboard helper in order to use qwerty keyboard I get booted back to samsung as defalt. I've changed the bt visibility to never time out and switched off the on screen keyboard with no luck, even tried a different keyboard with the same results. Also it bugs me that the multi window bar and s pen window only allow for select apps. I sent a message to support on Facebook regarding the keyboard issue we'll see what they have to say. I'm trying to decide if I want to root this thing. Thanks for your input!

Thanks much. I believe it could be a h/w issue. I thought it was strange that others were using the same keyboard with mixed results. I'm interested to see what samsung support has to say via Facebook, I contacted them about my perks and they were very helpful so I may end up having to exchange my device.

I like TW and the features it provides even though some of them are admittedly on the parlor trick side. I also like some specific features like SamsungLink, KiesAir, and Group Play which depend on TW. LG's mimicking the features of TW and is the only Android manufacturer gaining market share (Sony's flat and HTC who has been slimming down Sense is in a free fall). So no matter what our individual opinions are the masses seem to like "stuff" with their s/w. If someone with a Nexus loads third party apps (some of dubious quality) to replicate the functionality of an overlay they'll end up with the same (or more) background processes and open threads running using as many resources with poorer integration between functions. I'm a productivity user and consider AOSP a barren wasteland both visually and functionally. I don't race my devices for pink slips, I use them (heavily) to get things done. Samsung's s/w helps me do that. So if the price to pay is less fluid transitions so be it. All just my opinion of course; YMMV.

I totally agree with you 100%. And thats why I wrote the above.
Samsung doesn't offer so much in the GUI and although they have top hardware on their products(like the one I have now SM-P605), still they have the TW which apperantly has a lot of issues especially on the smoothness.
Don't get me wrong here. I love their products and I'm a huge fan.

The G-TabPro 10.1 and Note 10.1 2014 Edition are identical except for the latter having 1GB of extra RAM and S Pen. The former will probably be $100-150 less. Which do you think Samsung wants to sell more of and makes better margins on? They could have had any one of the five new devices on the shelves for the holiday selling season. Why do you think they chose the N10.1-14? With all Samsung's 2014 high-end devices running the same h/w and using the same screen resolution Samsung's development burden has been greatly reduced. It would be moronic of them to leave the more expensive and profitable N10.1-14 on older s/w while launching the cheaper and near identical G-TabPro 10.1 on 4.4 with new s/w features.
My guess is that if the new tablets are launching in February we'll start to see 4.4 and Magazine UX rolling out to N10.1-14 no later than mid-February with leaks starting to pop-up in the next three weeks. The media were using all the new tablets with 4.4 and Magazine UX at CES so the s/w's got to be close to done.
I think will be soon. New version note pro 12 have same hardware like note 10.1 installed 4.4 kitkat and new UX. That's mean samsung ready for 4.4 update after introduce new version tablet.

Well, now I need to research if the Note 10.1 2014 is getting the new gui with kitkat. Spec wise, they are virtually the same other than the pen and the tabpro is 2gb ram vs 3gb ram on the 2014. Might need an exchange, if so.
in my opinion, for the difference in price i would get the 2014 10.1 IF I wanted another 10 inch tablet. I have an iPad now but want a smaller tablet, hence getting the 8.4. Had the new nexus 7 and it was too small, especially using the note 3 as my phone.

I personally agree, especially since coming from a Note 10.1 (original) or tab 2, it is far smaller. That said, 7 and 8" tabs are extremely popular..
