For me, it takes absolutely forever to focus, and will usually only focus if I move my phone up and down/left and right (basically don't hold it still). As a result, I inevitably get blur.
I've tried using LG's camera app, and it focuses absolutely fine with no issue. Anybody else with the same issue?
Same problem here... I can't figure out how to improve this issue.

I'm on 100% stock Sprint. :/
I have a similar problem with CamScanner which I use to scan receipts....I think it has something to do with the fact the LG G3 has a UHD display and the app doesn't support that resolution yet. I'm on AT&T D850
No problems here. The picture is super-crisp at any distance. Then I press shutter and it takes maybe a second to take photo, then additional time to process/upload.
Google Drive 2.0.222.39
Running the same version here. I've noticed that if I tape the shutter once, a ring appears around the button. If I tap it again, it disappears. Sometimes that second tap takes the picture, but 9 times out of 10, I have to pan the camera around, pull it away or zoom in, and it snaps the shot, most of the time blurry because I'm moving.
Same issue.
Used to have the same issue as well. I just tried it now and Drive crashes after opening the camera to scan.
Google Drive 2.0.222.40, stock V10G-EUR-XX, Dalvik.
Completely unusable now

same problem here !
any solutions ?
You guys have the HDR on ? Tried turning it off ?
I tried disabling the HDR (was set to auto,) in the native camera app. I don't think that influences Google Drive though. Had no effect.
HDR off no effect here either
I just installed the latest Google Drive 2.0.222.51 and application started working. It still takes some time to focus on some shots, but is much better than before.
If you don't want to wait your turn to update Google Drive from the Play store you can grab it from here:

I have the G3 D855 10g version (with Root) and focus takes 1 second so works fine !!

Greetings,
My T-mobile Note 3 has a problem with the Rear Camera problem. I have to hold the camera on the subject about 2 seconds after the shutter sound, to wait for the line in the processing pop up window has scrolled across the screen. If i move the Note 3 before this is done the image is blurred or complelely lost off the picture. The image stabilizeation feature is on. The unit currently has Kit Kat (ver 4.4.2). Is there a setting I am missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been noticing this issue as well, mainly after the update to 4.4. Prior to the update, i could move the phone when the processing pops up and it still had the right picture. I reduced the resolution down to 6MP wide and it still has the same problem.
Only way I found to fix the issue was to turn off the smart stabilization feature. I don't see a use for this feature right now as I am able to hold the phone steady enough.

Thanks for the advice.
I shut off image stabilization, same as you and the problem is no longer there. Thank you for your suggesting. I hope this issue will be addressed in a future update from Samsung.

Update:
I chatted with a Samsung tech support online in regards to this issue. The problem seems to have been addressed by going into the camera app and clearing the cache and Data (Settings -> General [top tab] -> Application manager -> Camera). I don't know if this is a permanent solution (I doubt it), but it addresses the immediate problem. Fortunately, it seems that the pictures taken using the camera are still intact. :good: Once again, I hope Samsung will supply an update to address this issue.

No Dice....I cleared the data and cache and tried taking a picture with the stabilization on. After I clicked the camera icon and once the processing info popped up, I moved the phone. The recorded picture was not the one that i was focusing on when i clicked.
And I thought it was just me and my phone. I've not been to happy with the camera on the 3 because of this and I'm rooted so I didn't feel like unrooting to take it back and try another phone. I still use Samsung camera for video recording. (Smooth video by the way is like no other that I've seen, even on real camera's.) I downloaded Google camera from phonearena and it works fine for pictures, Samsungs is fine to as long as you don't move but I'll keep Googles. http://click.xda-developers.com/api....4) - xda-developers&txt=http://goo.gl/VEBuiq
Hey everyone, I recently updated to KitKat on my phone, and I have noticed a strange issue.
When loading up the camera, whether in the default camera app or on a program such as snapchat, the following thing happens:
The menu buttons and the camera shutter button all appear as normal...
BUT the screen (the camera viewfinder) remains black, and everything freezes for a few seconds. Then the screen shows up the cameras image and everything starts to work as it should.
So it seems like the apps are asking for the camera, but the camera is taking a few seconds to actually boot up. Which is weird, right?
I'm not on a stock ROM, im on the RomAur 3.0 one, but as far as I can tell it is using the standard camera app, and noone else has had this problem. I cam from the previous version of RomAur and the camera in that didnt have any issues either.
Just wondering if this is some glitch or something is interfering? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Try to clean (wipe) all cache.
Send from my Z1C using tapatalk
Had the same issue...
I did a reboot and the problem didn't happen again....
strangely enough this worked, even though clearing the cache and reboots were all things I did since I installed the ROM anyway...
I must have done something in the interim. Silly of me. Seems to be working now anyway so thanks guys

Can confirm this.
Sometimes the camera app is working fine and sometimes it takes several seconds to start and it is laggy... :-/
If it lags, but starts okay, rebooting does fix it. No idea what causes it, but it's only done it twice so far.
The far bigger problem is trying to start the camera when it was locked, when there's every chance the camera will freeze and not take or save your picture.
Unlock first then start the camera and all should be fine.

Mine did this as well as other issues. A factory reset did not help but the thing that cured is was a "Repair" from Sony PC Companion. This will perform a factory reset and reflash the OS. Worked for me.
Resets, wipes or repairs won't fix it forever. In fact, I think it's something else that causes problems with the camera app and not the app itself. It's how you start the camera and what was going on at the time that matters.

This turns out to be right. After a day or so of no issues with the camera, I tried loading up instagram today and the camera took a long time to load up.
I also notice that even when the camera is loaded, if you try switching to the front-facing camera - that takes a long time to load up too. And same again if you try and switch back to the rear camera.
If this is standard on all kitkat roms for the Z1c then there is some major glitch in there somewhere.
So far it happens on standard app, instagram, and snapchat for sure.

Resurrecting my own thread, as I never actually noticed a fix for this to come up anywhere? I know im not the only one experiencing this, is everyone just living with it?
Its not a huge bother as when it crops up I can do a restart to fix it for another day, but if/when it crops up when im trying to do something quickly its pretty annoying.
I noticed this. Turn off location and it fires right up. That GPS lock can take a few seconds... especially if you're indoors!

Oh well then its unlikely to be the same problem, as CM (as far as I know) doesnt use the same camera/framework/etc as the stock sony.
I have the same lag on my Z1C (CM Nightly), but it only occurs the first time I start the camera after a reboot. I just start the camera once I have rebooted the phone (you can kill it via task manager again and it still works!) and do not have any lags afterwards that could prevent a quick shot. It's not perfect, but it works.
Same here with cm 11.

Then its a completely different problem, cos on the stock android after a reboot the camera is fast straight away, and its only after an indeterminate amount of time (hours/days) of running that the camera will then become slow to load. And then a restart fixes the problem.
Clearly CM uses a different camera, or some other different piece of coding, that isnt the same in the stock sony build.

Does the ported Z2 camera overwrite the Z1 camera? As in, will apps like snapchat etc use the Z2 camera code instead of the Z1 code?
Because the problem isnt just with the default camera app, its with every app that uses the camera. Snapchat, instagram, facebook, whenever you load up the camera on any of them, theres a 5 second delay while the camera screen stays black, until the camera then switches on and starts working.
BUT not all the time, after a fresh reboot they all work instantly like they should. Its only after a few hours or whatever that the camera starts misbehaving. Something is causing interference.
I've seen threads about performance issues when charging etc and I have them myself!
One thing that completely destroys me is the performance when trying to take a quick picture or use an app that uses the camera.
E.g. barcode scanners move the complete opposite direction
Snapchat is also practically unusable. When I open it, it completely s**ts itself every time and is unusual!
I guess my question is..... Do you think custom ROMs and recoveries will solve the issues?
Thanks

I definitely think we should see some optimizations in the next weeks. Snapchat would crap out on me and eventually cause the camera module to crash. It got to the point that the camera would turn black within Snapchat and even within the camera app itself. Only fix was to reboot the phone to get the camera working again. Yesterday I received a snapchat update, not sure if it was meant to address performance issues, but it now works more smoothly and doesn't crash as often. There is definitely room for improvement!
It's really doing my head in and glad I'm not on my own in seeing this!! I don't know anyone else with the 5x to compare so been searching online.
I timed it today, I rebooted the phone and left it 5 minutes without opening anything. I fired up the camera app and it took 124 seconds (just over 2min) until the app was ready to take a photo (the blue circle showing around the shutter button). Then tapping the button to take a photo took a further minute to take the actual photo. Then the phone was that sluggish it needed a reboot.
Not sure if it's the hardware, the os or the app but I've tried Open Camera too and that seems to be really really slow. And, as the OP says, Snapchat totally craps out as do other apps that use the camera.

I just tried the same test. The camera app opened and was ready to shoot (blue circle showing) in about 2 seconds. Double pressing the power button to open the camera app had the blue circle around the shutter button showing right away
Every now and then it does work perfectly. But more times than not there is a massive lag. Usually after the phone has been on for half a day, but like this morning sometimes when it's just turned on.
I've experienced the same issues mentioned by you guys, especially in the OP.
Snapchat has practically been completely unusable until the most recent update, and that only marginally improved things. The root cause seems to be the camera itself, as I'm only seeing this type of lag in apps that access the camera. I can't help but imagine Google is working on a fix for this in the very near future, just one of those 'early adopter' issues I guess. It has caused me to do daily reboots just about, which is very aggravating because that defeats the purpose of a good camera if you miss the moment you're trying to capture. As I'm sure you guys have noticed, when the camera app actually works properly, the pictures are pretty impressive, which makes it all the more aggravating that it can't be used as fluently as designed.
Hoping for all of our sake that Google fixes this soon.
I'm in the same boat.

Hello guys,
I'm writing here because I've been running some frustrating problems with the htc camera application on my M8.
I run stock firmware, stock rom. never did any kind of flashing-modding or whatsoever, although I am not completely sure since it is a second hand phone. When i got it, it came on kitkat. I then upgraded directly to marshmallow.
Here are my actual software information: Android 6.0 / Software number: 6.16.708.1 / Kernel Version: 3.4.0 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT. Build number: 6.16.708.1 CL683910 release-keys.
I used the phone for one month without a problem. Then, for roughly two weeks my phone run minor random crashes with a very weird soft reset of certain application setting after the reboot. I.E: I had to log back again on all my app which required log in: spotify, wechat, even whastapp once, etc. Every time the home screen would show me the "how-to-use" tips as if it was the very first time I run the phone.
The camera became unusable: once opened, every button on screen was unusable. It didn't take photo, it didn't go to settings. nothing of nothing. It couldn't even show the bottom buttons for returning back to the home screen or managing the multi task. The whole interface seemed to be completely unresponsive.
Two days ago, I decided to factory reset through the recovery and reinstall everything.
Everything seemed fine.... but the camera.
It takes litteraly ages (7s more) to save photos. The interface is super laggy, I have to wait sensible seconds to go to settings or switch the camera mode. It is not as bad as it was before the reset, but it still unusable.
I have to mention that I have an sd card formatted as internal storage. However, since the problem persists, I formatted as portable and eventually I removed it completely. Despite this, the camera still does not work properly.
I tried to wipe the cache of the phone from the recovery. Nothing changed.
I also tried to run the phone in safe mode to see whether it was due to some application conflict. Problem still persists.
I am so frustrated, I really want my camera to work back again. I mean, I need it because I love taking picture with this phone ( I often go for photo shooting at night) and the htc camera application gives you a great Manual Mode which I cannot find in other 3d party applications.
Do you have any idea of what it might be?
Many thanks for having spent time reading this post.
I hope you can give some good feedback on this.
Cheers!
I have ran into the same problem. I even did a fresh install of viper rom. And still very slow.
This started happening less than a week ago.
Good afternoon,
The same problem occured to me last week.
This problem started after I restored apps from titanium backup.
I can point our how.
But.. After fresh wipe, all caches cleared. Camera seems to work fast again, no lag.
So check your phone space.. Free ram available.. And your use of titanium backup.
That helped me.
Let me know if this does something.
Regards,
WyCkson
I have the same problem it just started yesterday.
at the moment im using a another application to use the camera.
i want the stock camera working.
i have enough space and enough Ram.
why is it that the camera is so laggy.

OK a fresh install of viper and camera works fine, after updating from the play store the camera is slow. I don't think this is a titanium backup issue, I think it's a new update for something on the device that's interfering with the camera
Fresh install again, removed Titanium Backup. Downloaded selected system Google apps and all HTC apps except for sense home. Camera worked fine. Restarted for the lock screen update and now the camera lags. Trying to figure out which app is doing it.

After some 'auto updates', my camera started lagging huge ammount ~ 6 secs. plus other stuff. . .
Sounds like the same problem. Please post if you find out what's causing it.
same here
I just noticed crazy camera lag this morning (seemed to be working fine just yesterday). The Camera app was updated 6/23, so I assume its that. Can't find any other HTC apps that have recently updated; and no recent changes to the phone (Titanium restores or anything like that). Been on the same build of S.ROM for over a month, with no previous issues.
same here! ...
Hey guys I found your page during my research, since last night I cannot use my camera properly as you said huge lags occur and until that moment I cannot find a proper solution. But at least I found! The source of our problem is HTC SPEAK app. When I uninstall the app's updates camera became more stabyl and my phone's getting warm issues solved!
Good luck.
Found Solution(s)
For me, its HTC Speak app. If I uninstall updates for this App, Camera is back to normal.
But there is workaround even when recent update for this App is installed.
Turn On Camera App, go to Settings-Camera Options-Voice Capture. Turn it ON, download language pack when asked and than use Speak App for Camera or turn it off (as I did). Camera is working like it should either way

The same thing effects the 'Motion Launch Gestures' in Settings (Display & gestures). For some reason, it also uses language pack, same as camera app.

Are you trying to uninstall the Speak updates, or the Camera app workaround in Post #12?
If you are trying to uninstall updates, you can find the app in phone settings under Settings>Apps>Speak. But for me, the option to uninstall updates is grayed out, and cannot be selected.
For the workaround: when you select "Voice Capture" in Camera app Settings, it will ask you to update the language pack. Select to update it. Then, once that is updated, the camera will work fine. You can leave "Voice Capture" on, or turn it off in Camera app settings; either way, the camera should work fine now.
The option to uninstall updates was also greyed out for me, but you can select the menu icon in the top right corner of the Speak app settings to make that option available. I did this and yes it did fix the laggy camera issue but did not fix the non-functioning gesture control. The workaround that 3alfa3 provided fixes both issues.
Thank you to everyone who has helped resolve this issue as HTC support were as much use as (insert your own witty line...)

Hello all, i noticed this about a week ago,
I open camera app, and the viewfinder shows a lot of stuttering, the lower the light (not night sight and not night time photos, day time) the more it struggles to instantly snap the photo.
And throughout all this, lag, stuttering and what appears to be the app having difficulty just keeping up with displaying the viewfinder objects accurately.
Anyone else having this problem?
I noticed it after i dirty flashed Dec update. but then i did a full wipe and clean install of the dec update.
Still on going
thanks!
Edit:
I've cleared data, uninstalled updates, reinstalled updates, disabled all substratum themes, nothing seems to make it better

Just guessing but might be a HW issue. Perhaps there's a problem with the lens movement when trying to focus. You could try a different camera app to see if that makes a difference. Have you contacted Google support?

Mine doesn't do it all of the time, it randomly does it. Does yours do it all of the time?

Not a HW issue as this happened after Dec update.
No, I don't talk to google unless it's about a replacement, their techs are tier 1 idiots, they ain't gonna tell me more than what I know at this stage, and we don't get to talk to the people that know more than us.
Edit:
Can more people chime in and confirm if this behavior is happening w\them ?

Mine did this a couple of times since the update too. It only happens when I first open the camera app but not all the time. It happened yesterday but I can't get it to do it since then.

Yep, can confirm it happens when I first open the app too, but also happens when I move the phone a lot and the view finder just struggles to maintain a steady image through the movement

Google probably messed with the ISO to improve the image quality. I don't get it often and my photos come out clear so it's not a huge deal for me. It's still a big improvement from the Note 9 I had anyway.

I know image quality is good but the UI behavior is something of concern. The user shouldn't be exposed to the lag like that. Drives me nuts
I have been travelling and this phone is the worst I have used for taking photos while moving, I missed so many photos since the camera would not respond to click, then ended up taking a photos a few seconds later. Annoyed me so much tried to turn off motion, but it seems you can't and I believe this is the main problem, my wife uses a Pixel phone as well Pixel XL and she did not have the same problem with the camera app at all, same OS update level and the new camera updated app. Once it has taken one shot with lag, then the following are quick and almost instant.

I have no problems taking photos of things in motion , just a slight hesitation when I first open the app for the first time. As I said before my Note 9 had problems with objects in motion, not so with this camera for me. You can turn off motion photo by tapping the motion icon in the photo app.

Disable HDR enhanced and then you will be able to turn off motion. After that you can turn on HDR again.

It's strange there is no consistency to this experience

You are right... I miss my Pixel 2 XL already, except for the screen. A much better phone, and the most amazing battery I have experienced... Pixel 3 XL just killed all my hype with the Pixel Line.
Update:
I flashed one of the roms and it had me bootlooping so i did another flashall, this time all i did was root, i didn't flash any kernel.
Stock rom, + Magisk, and issue is no longer present.
This MAKES NO SENSE.
