Hey everyone, I recently updated to KitKat on my phone, and I have noticed a strange issue.
When loading up the camera, whether in the default camera app or on a program such as snapchat, the following thing happens:
The menu buttons and the camera shutter button all appear as normal...
BUT the screen (the camera viewfinder) remains black, and everything freezes for a few seconds. Then the screen shows up the cameras image and everything starts to work as it should.
So it seems like the apps are asking for the camera, but the camera is taking a few seconds to actually boot up. Which is weird, right?
I'm not on a stock ROM, im on the RomAur 3.0 one, but as far as I can tell it is using the standard camera app, and noone else has had this problem. I cam from the previous version of RomAur and the camera in that didnt have any issues either.
Just wondering if this is some glitch or something is interfering? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Try to clean (wipe) all cache.

Had the same issue...
I did a reboot and the problem didn't happen again....
strangely enough this worked, even though clearing the cache and reboots were all things I did since I installed the ROM anyway...
I must have done something in the interim. Silly of me. Seems to be working now anyway so thanks guys
Hello guys,
I have the same problem, I did a factory reset which solved it.
But after some days it appears again, sometime it's working sometime not, it seems to be random...

Can confirm this.
Sometimes the camera app is working fine and sometimes it takes several seconds to start and it is laggy... :-/
If it lags, but starts okay, rebooting does fix it. No idea what causes it, but it's only done it twice so far.
The far bigger problem is trying to start the camera when it was locked, when there's every chance the camera will freeze and not take or save your picture.
Unlock first then start the camera and all should be fine.

Mine did this as well as other issues. A factory reset did not help but the thing that cured is was a "Repair" from Sony PC Companion. This will perform a factory reset and reflash the OS. Worked for me.
Resets, wipes or repairs won't fix it forever. In fact, I think it's something else that causes problems with the camera app and not the app itself. It's how you start the camera and what was going on at the time that matters.

This turns out to be right. After a day or so of no issues with the camera, I tried loading up instagram today and the camera took a long time to load up.
I also notice that even when the camera is loaded, if you try switching to the front-facing camera - that takes a long time to load up too. And same again if you try and switch back to the rear camera.
If this is standard on all kitkat roms for the Z1c then there is some major glitch in there somewhere.
So far it happens on standard app, instagram, and snapchat for sure.

Resurrecting my own thread, as I never actually noticed a fix for this to come up anywhere? I know im not the only one experiencing this, is everyone just living with it?
Its not a huge bother as when it crops up I can do a restart to fix it for another day, but if/when it crops up when im trying to do something quickly its pretty annoying.
I noticed this. Turn off location and it fires right up. That GPS lock can take a few seconds... especially if you're indoors!

I always have location turned off, at least the location toggle is turned off. Unless the camera is still attempting to use gps even when the service is deactivated? But then thats still a fault

Hmm, that's how I disable it... and I haven't noticed the lag. I should say, I am currently running a CM based ROM - PA.

Oh well then its unlikely to be the same problem, as CM (as far as I know) doesnt use the same camera/framework/etc as the stock sony.
I have the same lag on my Z1C (CM Nightly), but it only occurs the first time I start the camera after a reboot. I just start the camera once I have rebooted the phone (you can kill it via task manager again and it still works!) and do not have any lags afterwards that could prevent a quick shot. It's not perfect, but it works.
Same here with cm 11.

Then its a completely different problem, cos on the stock android after a reboot the camera is fast straight away, and its only after an indeterminate amount of time (hours/days) of running that the camera will then become slow to load. And then a restart fixes the problem.
Clearly CM uses a different camera, or some other different piece of coding, that isnt the same in the stock sony build.
I installed port camera from z2 and i dont have lags. On stock camera i had couple of lags and crashes but for now with new camera is good

Does the ported Z2 camera overwrite the Z1 camera? As in, will apps like snapchat etc use the Z2 camera code instead of the Z1 code?
Because the problem isnt just with the default camera app, its with every app that uses the camera. Snapchat, instagram, facebook, whenever you load up the camera on any of them, theres a 5 second delay while the camera screen stays black, until the camera then switches on and starts working.
BUT not all the time, after a fresh reboot they all work instantly like they should. Its only after a few hours or whatever that the camera starts misbehaving. Something is causing interference.

Heya!
Anyone having some camera issues since the 4.4 Update?
Mine crashes and/or freezes randomly when taking photos with the software and hardware buttons. Sometimes the whole phone freezes and won't respond on any touch input. Sometimes lock and unlock it again helps but most times I have to wait a few seconds or use the "OFF"-Buttons.
Any fix for this?

Gosh, that sucks :/ Is it at least good to make a backup with the Sony app and then restore it or will this end up with the same error again?

if u want better chance not to see these kindda issue u must repair ur firmware by PCC.
factory reset means wiping firmware
but repair by PCC means install fresh firmware
:good:
I've got the same issue. It's actually worst when using SnapChat. It just freezes sometimes. I did a factory reset from the phone and this solved the issues for a day, but now it's back. I'm gonna do a full reset from the computer now and see if this solves it.
I have the same problem with the camera!! Anyone fixed this problem without factory reset?

And it's back. Camera often freezes the whole phone. When I listen to music, and starts snapchat and change from back to front camera, the whole phone freeze and the music stops for almost ten seconds.
Same here, 14.3.A.0.681. Did anyone found a fix?
The camera app opens and works, but at the moment to focus it just stuck on focusing and the photo is never taken.
I experience the same issue. Often, I have to wait for the camera to open, and SnapChat is unusable now. Don't really feel like resetting if people here are reporting that it doesn't fix the issues.
Same issue here. But on 785 (4.4, latest update, german TFT, unlocked BL and root). Camera hangs on every occassion, doesn't make a difference which capture method I use. Tried emptying cache and data for the camera app but that didn't solve anything. I don't want to reinstall my phone because it's a pain in the ass. Problem does not occur with the front camera.
I did find a fix!!!:
Just clear data&cache of the camera app and snapchat (just need to log in again). Now everything works smooth and quick again.
@madlive: weird, for me clearing data&cache fixed all my problems. Maybe try it again?

Having just sold my Z1 (after having .757 installed) and now using a 'spare' Z1 Compact until my Z2 arrives, I wasn't that surprised to notice that the Z1 Compact has exactly the same problems as the Z1.
Wiping, resetting, clearing the cache - all pointless in the long run. Any fix is coincidental. It's a bug that hasn't been completely fixed with .757. The mere fact I've had the same problems on both handsets shows it's the firmware.
If you unlock the phone and start up the camera via the icon, chances are it will work fine.
If you activate the camera from standby, it may fail (the freezing problem, or 'camera not available' error).
What .757 seems to have fixed is the issue where the phone starts to get red hot and then you get the warning that it's too hot to use the camera. I've been taking a lot of photos this last weekend and never had that happen, so at least Sony fixed one thing. I suspect that was down to a series of problems with the media server and creating thumbnails etc, all of which were fixed.
When you have the freezing problem, was the phone locked? In other words; was it locked, but you started the camera via the camera key or dragging up the camera icon? When you tapped power to turn off/on, did you then have to unlock again? If you subsequently unlock - does the camera work fine now?
My hunch is that this is where the problem lies. I've got pattern unlock and now have it set to not lock for 30 minutes. So if I'm taking photos, I unlock the phone and - touch wood - I have no camera issues for that time.
If the phone has locked itself later on, and I don't unlock first, I expect the camera to fail. Yet it doesn't always - but once is still too much. I missed a potentially awesome photo of my two year old son because of this - and it's bloody frustrating. Especially as there's no idea on when we might get another update.
Another problem I noticed on the first KitKat release was the on-screen keyboard appearing over the camera one time. I'd been using the keyboard in another app before firing up the camera using the button, so the camera fault must be down to how it sets itself up when launched - and what you were doing just before (unlock screen, another app) influences the likelihood of it crashing.
In any case, it's a pain.
But on the plus side, the quality of the photos I got over the weekend - mostly in manual landscape mode - are stunning. The phone is capturing a level of detail that is exceptional now. And auto mode is now generally pretty good too, suggesting it doesn't just bump up the ISO all the time.
Same bug here!

I'm having the same problem here. Does Sony is aware of this bug?
Does anyone know of a link where we can complain about it to the manufacturer?
I thought that something was wrong/broken with my phone, but then, after seeing your posts, it isn't... So no factory reset... Just wait for an update? even 3rd party apps seem to crash, expecially the google camera... Wth
I'm getting the same problem since the stock 4.4.2 update, battery life doesn't seem as good anymore either, but i'm always near a charger so the new Camera bugs are the most annoying.
You can't exactly "catch a moment" by whipping your camera out anymore, most of the time I'm waiting about 5-10 secs for the picture to appear ready to take a pic, especially noticeable on Snapchat or when switching from front-face to rear.
I woudn't mind but being on Stock Firmware I'm always waiting longer for Android updates, supposedly because of the extra rigorous testing etc!
bump !
it appears accessing camera from different locations (lockscreen shortcuts ...) confuses the mecanism, this added to some flashlight app and you're good to have the reboot-proof camera FC problem... pffff
Possible Fix!
*** possible fix! ***
I read this on another forum and for about 5 days now my camera has been behaving completely normal across all apps!
Little warning - for me this logged me out of some apps, and caused me to have to put some widgets back on - it almost behaved like clearing the cache when you're rooted, no data lost just a some apps liked twitter etc were acting like they were installed for the first time...
The method is to boot into safe mode once, then just power the phone off and boot as normal:
Hold down your power button
In the menu hold down the "Power Off" option and say OK to safe mode
Once you're in safe mode, turn the phone off
Turn the phone on again, it will boot as normal
Camera just now behave as normal!
Not only has it worked for me so far, but my whole phone seems a bit faster.
Good luck!
Yes have faced that issue with camera, just like my friend warned me :/ freezing, when clicking
Factory reset didn't do much good

For me, it takes absolutely forever to focus, and will usually only focus if I move my phone up and down/left and right (basically don't hold it still). As a result, I inevitably get blur.
I've tried using LG's camera app, and it focuses absolutely fine with no issue. Anybody else with the same issue?

I'm on 100% stock Sprint. :/
I have a similar problem with CamScanner which I use to scan receipts....I think it has something to do with the fact the LG G3 has a UHD display and the app doesn't support that resolution yet. I'm on AT&T D850
No problems here. The picture is super-crisp at any distance. Then I press shutter and it takes maybe a second to take photo, then additional time to process/upload.
Google Drive 2.0.222.39
Running the same version here. I've noticed that if I tape the shutter once, a ring appears around the button. If I tap it again, it disappears. Sometimes that second tap takes the picture, but 9 times out of 10, I have to pan the camera around, pull it away or zoom in, and it snaps the shot, most of the time blurry because I'm moving.
Same issue.
Used to have the same issue as well. I just tried it now and Drive crashes after opening the camera to scan.
Google Drive 2.0.222.40, stock V10G-EUR-XX, Dalvik.
Completely unusable now

You guys have the HDR on ? Tried turning it off ?
I tried disabling the HDR (was set to auto,) in the native camera app. I don't think that influences Google Drive though. Had no effect.

I just installed the latest Google Drive 2.0.222.51 and application started working. It still takes some time to focus on some shots, but is much better than before.

Hey guys!
So just as the subject reads, the phone from time to time can't connect to my camera and I just get a black screen. Switching between the front and back when this happens triggers the error message and tells me to send a diagnostic report to Google. One of the things I tried was to force close the camera process and still nothing. Only fix is to reboot the phone, but eventually in a day or two the camera will crash again.
Just to rule out any kind of corruption, I wiped the phone to factory settings via recovery and the phone still behaves like this. One of the apps I noticed does not play well with the phone is snapchat (current beta). The app is super laggy and wondering if this could cause the camera overall to eventually crash. Any ideas or thoughts are welcome!
Overall I'm kind if disappointed with the performance of the phone over several days. Upon reboot its quick and over a day or two the phone gets pretty sluggish, even locking up at times for a few seconds without being able to do anything. Sometimes exiting an app and going to the main screen takes a solid 5 to 10 seconds.
Yeah the camera app is very, very bugging. Really hoping there'll be an update that fixes the problems with that and 3rd party cameras.

Actually that's exactly the way my Nexus 4 behaved, which was the main reason I had to replace it now. Hope 5X won't do that, or I'd be pretty pissed off. I thought it was a hardware issue, but now according to what you write I suspect this might relate to some application installed.
I'll add myself to the list. Sometimes It doesn't even make picture, just get stuck and does nothing for a while, then for whatever reason it start shooting a sequence of pointless picture. Many times it take 2 pics in a row, like a not asked, not wanted crappy pointless multishot
Camera was completely fine for me until I got an OTA update 2 days ago and now its completely dog ****. Freezes for a while when I open the app, and crashes if I turn the phone to landscape.

How exactly did you root? And if you flashed a modified boot.img, which one fid you flash? Also, what does "reset to default" mean? Does this mean that you flashed the factory image for MMB29K?

I don't know what's happened, seemingly over night my camera no longer works. I was running Cloudy 2.5 and I wiped it and installed CM12, still no luck. Now I've got it running PA and STILL the camera refuses to work in any apps. I installed FV-5 camera and it just crashes when I launches it. Snapchat tells me to restart the phone but after a few attemps, I can get the front camera to work. I'm starting to think this is a hardware problem as I've flashed new ROMS etc. Has anyone else had a problem like this?
edit: I just installed and launched Snapchat again and when I switched from the front camera to the back, it worked for half a second and then froze. Restarted the app and now it seems to be working.
Greets
I had this issue on my g2 all roms nogo so i flashed back stock kdz and it worked then flashed all same romsa again and it actually work so im asuming it was some stupid issue from the factory. But mine done it from the start on stock rom i thought it was a hardware issue it was a warantie replacement i didnt know i had the pbone for about a week and went to take a pic and bam so like i said i tried many roms nogo a fresh new tot
I'll give it a go because it still seems broken. It's working sometimes, but in snap chat the image is flipped upside down and there's a purple tint. Exiting the app and opening it again fixes it, but most of the time it's not working.
This happened to me, but on a different device - it's a CM bug. You could download an app called "restart camera" by temasek from playstore to see if it helps.

I have LG G3 *D855*... My phone worked fine and fast 2 and half years, no problem, warranty after 2 years was over, but I even didnt think about other phone, because I realy like LG G3 and there is nothing very better created yet + I used mobile case and phone is in perfect condition. Ok, after 2,5 years, phone never was swiped, it was overloaded with files, photos, apps... One day, camera start crashing and sometimes I got some lagz. I decided to root the phone, installed Cloudy 3G, camera worked only first 10mins, then crashed like in stock version. I found one flashable file, called camera fix lgg3... It fixed camera, no lagz on camera, no problem with crashing, flashlight worked, everything was fine. But damn, that Cloudy3G was so unstabble, sometimes phone freezed for a while, sometimes it restarted itself, sometimes apps crashed, like facebook, whatsup and other... But... The biggest deal was with battery... Battery drain was awfully high... If phone was in standby mode, battery taked only one day, but... If I used any app or just watched videos on youtube, I was able to see how % was dropping in minutes. It was like 1 min = 1-2% gone. So, I flashed CM14... Nice mod, I liked, takked few hours to know the mode and customize it for my needs. Camera worked first day, then crashed again... Actualy... It worked sometimes, like 1 time from 10 attempts with phone restart. But, for short time, sometimes 1min, sometimes 30mins. I didnt find any fix, cause that first fix was only for stock camera version... Decided to flash other rom... Fulmics was next, worked fine, mode is cool, stable, battery life is very good, almost like stock version. Camera worked for 2 days, then the same problem... Cannot connect to camera or camera is busy...
From starting, I was able to get into camera by restarting phone, but after few days, no restarts helped.
What I can do now? Any suggestions? Ohh, and sometimes camera is purple and shows upsidedown, before crashing.
All, what I can imagine to do, is try another ROM or try to swipe everything and get back to original stock version. But its not so difficult like installing custom roms. So, it will help or somebody has other solution?
So i dont know what happened, maybe something broke inside but the default camera app wont work anymore. It just crashes immediately. it started do it out of nowhere on a custom rom (colt OS) i went to stock image and it still crashes, and now im on pixel dust and it continues crashing..
could it be a hardware problem internally?

Could be, but it seems to be, unfortunately, a common problem.
yea the one time i got the camera app to work, the camera WILL NOT FOCUS and the colors are all ****ed up, and the colors flicker slightly. atleast now i can definitively say the camera module got broke internally. shock damage since ive always had a case on
