well i spoke to Samsung and they said in the past they use to wait for Bell , Rogers , Telus , but not anymore as the update is made for all samsung s3 canadian via ota and they no more need the provider so it should be fast and the proof is all galaxy s3 get the update in the same time . all application are update it via Google play so let's see .time will tell .
Question, since I'm rooted, would I have any issues with installing this upgrade?

Well there are great apps out there, I use Voodoo OTA. And it creates a backup of your root, then you have the option to do a temp unroot so when you are doing the update OTA (only works for OTA updates), the update won't detect that your device is rooted and after upgrade complete, open up Voodoo OTA, click Restore Root and voilĂ !
This should work all of the time, but I haven't tested it in a real scenario yet.
Let me know what happens!

I think you are referring to another leak. The first official JB update has come only for Poland.

Hi!
I was talking about official updates only with the OTA(over-the-air/wirelessly). So if you're in USA/CAN you'll have to wait for the JB update to come over here first then get pushed out to devices, then before update sue the app.
Michael
This is awesome news. Quick question though, since I'm new to the SGSIII. If I "disabled" some apps under the application manager, can I still install the OTA when it comes around? I'm not rooted or anything, I just got the phone a couple days ago and don't feel like voiding my warranty quite yet

You dont need to disable anything. You are on stock - so wait until the OTA is released. It will inform you, and just let it download and install.

I think he was asking if he has some apps disabled, vs rooting to remove them, if it'll be an issue to install OTA. I have all the Rogers apps disabled, since I'm not using the Rogers network. I don't see any issue with the OTA working, since no system files were changed, you're just telling them to not run. Worst case, just re-enable them when you know the OTA is out, do the update and disable the apps again. That's my plan!
Just tried to update with the "check for updates" : option under settings and it didn't work. My phone is rooted, and so when it rebooted (it props for reboot and install) it went into CW and aborted install. Is there a way around this?

I keep getting a notification about an ATT update and I was wondering if it will affect my rooted phone. I just have a basic 'stock' odin root, not a custom Rom. The update will not let me disable notifications and will only let me delay the reminders 8 hrs........... I am getting tired of seeing the notifications and dont know what it will do if I update. Any advice is appreciated!!!

Yeah it will remove the root but you can re-root it after the update or use supersu pro to conserve root (though not guaranteed).
Have you modified any system apps or files at all? If not i don't see why you won't, just be sure to run Voodoo OTA Keeper before installing the update and restore it after the update. As this update patches the ExynosAbuse exploit
Download OTA root keeper from the play store.

So you are saying that you were on a rooted stock LK2 ROM, and ran the OTA update successfully without losing root? And this was without using RootKeeper OTA or SuperuserSU set to protect root?

Your phone will not correctly install an OTA update if you have a custom recovery. You will need to find it in the development forums, already rooted, and as a flashable ZIP in custom recovery.
I get " Your device has been modified, software updates are not available." when checking for OTA updates in settings. Does that mean I have to flash via Odin and wipe my device for every update?

No, just unroot using Super SU, then reboot. Once you're back up, check for updates and they will now come through, then after the update is done, reroot, I just did all of that so I know it will work.
Didn't work for me. I removed quite a lot of Samsung apps and other things I don't need ( atm. 51 apps). I defrosted all of them to see it that was causing it. I also unrooted multiple times to no avail.

That's weird, I even forgot to defrost the Knox apps and the update still applied successfully. The Knox apps were the only ones I froze, and since the update was successful it must have unfrozen them when I un rooted, either that or the update didn't touch any files related to Knox, or maybe freezing apps still shows them as there to system and fw updates.
I'm getting the same message. I think it's because I deleted a few system apps, instead of just freezing them. I just have to find another copy of Windows, so I can use Odin.
I don't have anything deleted, unfrozen everything, unroot, keep getting the same message.

Flash stock recovery solved the problem for me!
But after I downloaded to update it said that failed to update, and told me to use Kies. However on Kies it said latest update is already installed.
Anyone?

one step i did when i got the error was to reroot and then unroot just to make sure that it unrooted properly and to unfreeze all the apps i had frozen. i also cleared the cache in recovery.

How do I get to recovery mode?
adb reboot recovery in a command prompt or terminal emulator.
or hold power and volume up at boot up.
Nothing worked for me to get the OTA. For some reason I was able to update using Kies. It took forever to download the update but it worked.

Evidently just unrooting doesn't do it for everybody, so the cache must be cleared as well to allow updates again.

Won't take the update if you are rooted. Already tried.
Waiting for root safe confirmation before accepting an update that includes nothing more than Roms here have had for a while?

you should never take an update unless you're SURE it can be rooted. I bought an s4 in the store and before I left the worker updated my phone for me to, and it turns out that update is what locked down the bootloader and to this day if you have that firmware you still can't unlock the bootloader.. so before anyone accepts updates research first or you might end up with a stock phone, forever.
You can root S4 though. Big difference between unlocking boot loader and rooting lol

That's what he's saying, basically the OP's problem differs slightly from yours in that although your phone was updated there was was still a means to root your phone even after losing the ability to unlock you boot loader. Meanwhile after updating the OP can't even get root. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though...

I can CONFIRM 100% that you CAN UPDATE to 10p once you are rooted and use TITANIUM BACKUP to FREEZE the AT&T APPS. Tried twice...worked flawlessly both times. Hope I helped someone.:good:
I just rooted and updated to the P version. Kept root. I don't even have TBU installed, either, so freezing ATT apps is not a variable necessarily.

It doesn't matter if you freeze the apps. It matters if the apps are uninstalled.

I never uninstalled them, only tried without being frozen, then with. Only updated with freezing. Not sure about uninstalling them.
Root sticks after the update. Your recovery must be stock, not CWM or TWRP. I didn't need to freeze anything, though I never deleted/disabled anything prior to the update.
What about the OP's question: Can anyone root AFTER taking the update? I assume his phone was not rooted prior to the update.
I just tried this myself on my "clean" phone and can confirm the univ root method does not work any more after the 10p update.
.
I'm having the same problem, hopefully somebody figures out a way way around this, I hate not being rooted.

You might be on to something here! Definitely going to try tomorrow...even though I'm updated at the moment, and rooted!
well I had the similar issue as the OP. I was rooted, running CWM recovery and had removed most of the AT&T stock apps. I saw the update available and like a fool I accepted the update and then was stuck in CWM recovery boot loop. Nothing worked to get out of the loop so I decided to reflash with stock TOT file. Then I took the 10p update and found the Universal Root file not working (I updated before rooting).
I need to have root... so next try I reflash stock TOT file, root with Universal Root, accept update to 10p and all is good. I can once again remove AT&T stock apps, disable carrier-iq, use Freegees to go back to custom recovery, etc, etc, etc... all good now! :good:
Hello all.
I have a rooted SGH-I747 (AT&T S3) with Android 4.1.1
When the update for Android 4.4 becomes available, I would like to have it.
I was under the impression that I would have to unroot, wipe, and install the stock to get 4.4
And then earlier I found the "Temp Unroot" and "OTA Survival" options in SU.
Will these options allow me to simply update to 4.4 without going through the hastle of unrooting/wiping ?
Thanks in advance for the help.

I personally would wait to see what the update will entail, see what kind of problems it may have, see if they still have the boot loaders on lock down where you cannot flash previous versions before I update. As far as you're concerned I would do a fresh install of whatever stock rom you're running now through Odin since you're still on 4.1.1 you can flash whatever you want. I would also do the free unlock while you're on 4.1.1 because it was a glitch they over looked in that rom and corrected in all the newer roms.

OK. Got the free unlock, dont know how I missed that.
Now, back to the temp unroot,
whenever the time comes to update to 4.4, is SU's "Temp Unroot" and/or "OTA Survival" a dependable method?
I've tried to research it as much as possible within the last 24 hours but I'm still a little unresolved.
Is there a tutorial/guide somewhere?
Also, follow up question:
Will Titanium backup help in this process?
And/or will it benefit me to get the paid version of titanium backup?

This probably can not be answered with any certainty until the update is out and a number of people have tried it. Like theramsey3 was saying, to answer this someone will have to have tried it and failed or succeeded. We will find out at that point. Just like we found out that the 4.3 update installed a bootloader that could not be downgraded (easily) and that Knox was active on all devices, not just when activated by corporate IT.

TiBU will allow you to restore apps and or their data much more quickly than re-downloading all of the apps.
Definitely DO NOT restore system apps with TiBu.
An advantage the paid version has is that you can restore the apps and their data in batches, rather than one at a time.
