Anybody taken the same update? Universal root isn't working for me, it's saying it's a read only system. Any help??
((PROBLEM FIXED!!!)) HAVE PHONE ROOTED BEFORE, THEN USE TITANIUM BACKUP TO FREEZE AT&T APPS. Then update...enjoy still having root!
Try to flash again the older version with lg flash tool and root then.

Won't take the update if you are rooted. Already tried.
Waiting for root safe confirmation before accepting an update that includes nothing more than Roms here have had for a while?

you should never take an update unless you're SURE it can be rooted. I bought an s4 in the store and before I left the worker updated my phone for me to, and it turns out that update is what locked down the bootloader and to this day if you have that firmware you still can't unlock the bootloader.. so before anyone accepts updates research first or you might end up with a stock phone, forever.
You can root S4 though. Big difference between unlocking boot loader and rooting lol

That's what he's saying, basically the OP's problem differs slightly from yours in that although your phone was updated there was was still a means to root your phone even after losing the ability to unlock you boot loader. Meanwhile after updating the OP can't even get root. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though...

I can CONFIRM 100% that you CAN UPDATE to 10p once you are rooted and use TITANIUM BACKUP to FREEZE the AT&T APPS. Tried twice...worked flawlessly both times. Hope I helped someone.:good:
I just rooted and updated to the P version. Kept root. I don't even have TBU installed, either, so freezing ATT apps is not a variable necessarily.

It doesn't matter if you freeze the apps. It matters if the apps are uninstalled.

I never uninstalled them, only tried without being frozen, then with. Only updated with freezing. Not sure about uninstalling them.
Root sticks after the update. Your recovery must be stock, not CWM or TWRP. I didn't need to freeze anything, though I never deleted/disabled anything prior to the update.
What about the OP's question: Can anyone root AFTER taking the update? I assume his phone was not rooted prior to the update.
I just tried this myself on my "clean" phone and can confirm the univ root method does not work any more after the 10p update.
.
I'm having the same problem, hopefully somebody figures out a way way around this, I hate not being rooted.

You might be on to something here! Definitely going to try tomorrow...even though I'm updated at the moment, and rooted!
well I had the similar issue as the OP. I was rooted, running CWM recovery and had removed most of the AT&T stock apps. I saw the update available and like a fool I accepted the update and then was stuck in CWM recovery boot loop. Nothing worked to get out of the loop so I decided to reflash with stock TOT file. Then I took the 10p update and found the Universal Root file not working (I updated before rooting).
I need to have root... so next try I reflash stock TOT file, root with Universal Root, accept update to 10p and all is good. I can once again remove AT&T stock apps, disable carrier-iq, use Freegees to go back to custom recovery, etc, etc, etc... all good now! :good:

So I updated to 4.1.2 recently and decided I'd simply root my phone. Now today I have the AT&T updater telling me I have an update pending. I'm already on 4.1.2 and the only possible reason I could conceive as to why this is popping up is because during rooting something must have changed and that flagged the updater as me having an obsolete firmware. Anyone else getting this?

If you are going to stick with stock, you may want to use autoruns to disable the check for updates. That way at least the notification will go away.

You mean "the unroot did work", and you are not presently rooted, right?
Did you simply try rebooting? I was confused about the update not working, then realized I simply needed to reboot, then the update worked fine.
If any bloat apps were even frozen in Titanium, you need to unfreeze them. I know you said you didn't modify the firmware. But you might have missed this, or didn't consider it "modifying the firmware".
Did you install busybox? It's possible that Samsung's looking for things other than the SU binary and busybox is one of the things a lot of folks install immediately after SU.
All those things are accounted for. The device status still says custom though. Weird..

Did you remove or freeze any apps while rooted? If so then did you make sure to restore them before you unrooted and tried to update?
Use the PCsoftware "kies" of samsung , that will let you update / upgrade even if you are rooted.
It shows the latest firmware and your firmware so you know if you need to update or not.
You will lose root if you decide to flash firmware.
It may sound ridiculous, don't really understand why, but I had the same problem and googled it (don't remember where i found it) the solution for me was as simple as removing my SD card and rebooting, then the update option magically was available again.
Ok, so here is my issue. For the sake of time, i want to make this question as simple as possible.
I've been putting it off, but now that kit kat is here, i need to get the ball rolling with twrp and my phone. Basically, i am on zv7, rooted stock. I have not been able to install twrp on my phone, and I need someone who would be merciful enough to help me out, to explain to me how to install it on stock zv7, and get kit kat, as i dont want to unroot. I have yet to find instructions online that would be able to help me with my particular situation... Any help would be appreciated.... Thank you for your time guys.

You can update with stock rooted. Why are you not on at least ZVA? You don't need a custom recovery to be rooted. You can be rooted and have stock recovery, but any time you take an OTA update you lose the root and have to rerun ioroot.

My point exactly. I don't want to lose root, and i don't want to reroot. Even if i took the OTA on stock rooted, i'm pretty sure it would break several things I have now as i use alot of apps that require root privilegedes, e.g titanium backup. I realize you don't need to have twrp to be rooted (as i am rooted), but i do need it to safely flash an updated 4.4 zip that would preserve my root privileges, and upgrade me to kitkat...
P. S, i am not on ZVA because when i soft bricked earlier this year, i had to go back to full unrooted stock, and in my rush to reroot, forgot to upgrade to zva before rooting, which is why im on zv7...

If you follow this method you will not lose root. But, 4.4.2 can be rooted with ioroot25 anyway, and it's easy.
The only way to enter custom recovery will be through a terminal emulator command (see post #2). If you take the OTA, you will lose custom recovery altogether.

If I'm not mistaken when you check for updates, you will have to update to zv8, then zva, then it will offer zvc. Check in your updater what it says is available. I don't expect you'll have any issues as long as you haven't modified files/removed system files.

No. You will have to unfreeze those apps and completely remove xposed. You might want to flash Youdug's odexed stock rom if you continue to run into snags.
Also: If you are taking the OTA on your phone, you should probably unroot.
Ok, so here is what i did. I updated all the way to zva, but now im not seeing the kitkat update. How do i go about getting kitkat since the update broke root completely?
Just a note for those who want to preserve root while doing an OTA, supersu and superuser have a "survival mode" for people who want to preserve root. I had to factory reset so i couldn't do it, but just something to keep in mind.

If you're not seeing the update you have a few options. Some say clearing Google services framework data and hitting check for updates repeatedly works. You can install it using the method above, or you can flash autoprime's .tot file using LG flash tool.
You can always re-root with ioroot25 if you need to.
Just want to say thanks to everyone here who took the time to help me out. For those of you who want to know, i decided to root from zva. I used the freegee app to download and install recovery (super easy) and am about to flash cm11 for stock kitkat.
Hey Guys,
I'm trying to apply the OTA update to move to KitKat but I've tried it twice now and both times before it even starts doing anything on the installation after turning off, I get a dead android icon with a red triangle and an exclamation point. I figured this issue was due to me removing some packages to uninstall bloat but I restored all the ones I backed up and I'm not sure if I'm missing something. I'm rooted using the saferoot on 98.30.1.XT907.Verizon.en.US. How can I get my phone to update? I'm aware that I'll lose root but it's not imperative for me. I really only use it to get rid of ads using AdAway. Thanks in advance!
Is there a way to get the apk's for all the system installed apps that come with the Droid RAZR M? I could go through and install the ones I'm missing that way. I thought I backed up any ones that I was removing so that this wouldn't happen when a new OTA came out but apparently not.
Your best bet will likely be to RSD back to stock and then take the OTA.

So I would just want to use RSDLite from here - http://www.4shared.com/zip/uOa2HVb9/RSDLite616.html
And then download the same version of Android I have now (98.30.1.XT907.Verizon.en.US) from here - http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=8 and install that?

Would that do a factory reset in the process? I just want to know if I need to backup my pictures before hand. I haven't had a problem with doing OTA's and losing pictures but I guess if there's some in there I want to keep I should back them up anyways. I don't really use my phone for many pictures though.
Using the linked files it shouldn't delete user data (wipe), but some system settings will get reset.
Please see this thread.

I'm not sure on that. I was on the stock rom to begin with but I had removed some bloat (thought I had backups for everything but I guess not) and after restoring it all it wouldn't install. Tried it twice to no avail. Then just grabbed the KK update zip file and RSD'ed it over and it was done in about 5-10 min. Phone was running slow while Google Play went and downloaded updates for all my apps but it's running beautifully now.

Yes, as long it's the same or a newer system version you're flashing: You can restore your version, you can upgrade it to a newer one, but to downgrade the bootloader has to be unlocked.

Truth be told, I never tried to downgrade from KitKat, so maybe there's something different now, but I believe it works, just as a downgrade from JB to ICS.

I would say you would need to unroot and/or find a modified package you can flash through recovery on a rooted device. If you want to return to stock there are the required files in the Dev forum.

If you´re using towelroot or installing busybox those will leave pretty lot of files behind in system etc.
I imagine those left behind will possibly make an update a bit harder.

Now that I think of it, that could be my issue, I've made a few modifications and froze certain apps. That explains why a full unroot wouldn't work. I'll have to do a full backup and restore later. I'm just hoping that the OTA fixes the Chromecast crashing issues.
