[Q] Status of freedom to install ROMs? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm considering picking up a S3 off eBay, since they seem to be rather cheap nowadays ( under $100), and was thinking of it as an upgrade from my Galaxy Nexus.
I've seen people with Verizon S3s and S4s get stuck after updating so they couldn't install any ROMs anymore.
Of course I haven't really heard much about the Sprint phones being locked down so much, but could anyone tell me if (even with the newest update) if you can install CWM and CyanogenMod?
Thanks

it would be better to install Philz Touch CWM advanced recovery from Odin and you can back up your stock rom when in the recovery then do the second option under wipe data to wipe everything but first make sure you have the Touchwiz rom and or AOSP rom + Gapps to flash in your internal storage then wipe cache and dalvik cache and your done so yes you can still install a custom recovery and custom rom like CyanogenMod

I don't think you read through my whole post, since I wasn't asking how to do it, since I'm already familiar with Heimdall flashing (have been flashing on early Verizon S3/S4, before updates blocked it).
But the big question is... If you were to go to 100% stock (or a 100% stock phone to begin with), and have the newest updates applied(I think it is 4.3 or 4.4), you can still flash stuff, and not have it brick, right?
I know if I were to try the same on a Verizon S3, it would almost certainly brick.

but i did read through it i just answered the last part about CWM and CyanogenMod since that's what i know for sure
but you see for the rest of your words i have flashed on full stock 4.4.2 NDC since mine is the Boost variant with root and philz touch recovery....but only stuff made for touchwiz like the S5 ported apps just the worst i got after flashing is constant force closing of one or more apps for then i would have to boot back into recovery with the button method and flash a backup but i have done so and my s3 started with 4.4.2 stock update for the sprint variant even tho its the same model number i would wait to see if anyone else with it chimes in....but since it is the same basic model everything basically works the same way for them

Yes, you can still flash whatever you want besides modem. You just can't ever Odin anything older than ND8 (Sprint TouchWiz 4.4.2) or NDC (Boost / Virgin Mobile TouchWiz 4.4.2).

[Q] Rom for Pageplus Galaxy S3

Hi, I have a Galaxy S3 sprint that was recently flashed to Pageplus. It has the stock Android 4.3 rom and I was able to install a custom Kernel (Ktoonsez Touchwiz JELLYBEAN 4.3) so far everything works fine...I, however, would like to flash a "as close as possible" vanilla Android rom, or maybe a debloated Touchwiz based rom without the samsung and sprint Apps, btw..I like to game on my phone so a rom that brings the best performance is also welcome
However, I've read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2335582 which seems to confirm that the flash wont be ruined in Android 4.1.2 (I have 4.3), but when I asked the guy who flashed my phone about flashing a custom rom he said this
"He: any questions for me?
Me: yes, If I flash a custom rom..will that break the flash?
He: yes, custom roms will 100% break the flash
they flash a custom radio usually or do NVM folder wipe
so all flash settings get wiped
there are some roms that don't have radio in them
but it's risky unless you know 100% from the ROM dev that NVM folder is not being wiped
the other issue is most custom roms don't have DIAG mode
so you can't flash inside them
only touchwiz based roms have DM mode which is requiref for flashing"
How much of this is correct?, can I flash any rom, yes or no?

No custom ROM that I know of wipes NVM or flashes a radio... Now if you are talking about Odining a stock ROM, then yes that would wipe everything out. So I would try a TouchWiz ROM, because he is right about those, they are the only ones with DIAG mode.

I've used Dandroid 2.1 which is TouchWiz, CM 10.1 and C-Rom 4.4.2 v5.9
I'm curretly using C-Rom with LeanKernel 9.6
You have to use a third party MMS App in order to receive and send pics if you are using a TouchWiz Rom with the stock Sprint MMS App.
That App is not 100% compatible with the Verizon/Pageplus 3g network.
Within the stock App go to settings and uncheck notifications.
To replace it I recommend 8sms which is free and reliable from the App store, but you have to change the setting within the App once installed.
Change whatever you have for..
MMSC URL:h ttp://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMSC Proxy: 0.0.0.0
Port: 80
I don't think that last two are really needed to be changed but that's how I have it
If you are using a AOSP Rom like C-Rom Android 4.4.2 the MMS App will work just fine.
However, you will have to go to
1) Settings
2) "More" Wireless & Network settings
3) Mobile Networks
4) Access Point Names
5) Choose Sprint or create a new one
Do the same thing as before
MMSC: htt p://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMSC Proxy: 0.0.0.0
Port: 80
Save the settings (Left button next to home button) and you are good to go.

[Q] Noob question about un-rooting

So I have an S3 that I had CM11 on and I switched from sprint to ting and need to update the PLR Profiles. I installed what I thought was a Touchwiz ROM (MOAR) and it wouldn't boot. But it removed Clockwork Mod, I'm back to the stock downloader that says "Odin Mode" with a Warranty Bit: 1.
Before I go further and flash a stock ROM (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738533 ) with Odin I wanted to make sure this wouldn't brick (knowing brick anyway) my phone. Everything I read through search contradicts what I read before it. Some say that downgrading (CW11 is KitKat and I'm guessing this is JB or ICS since its from 2012) will brick your phone (Cant seem to find current stock ROMs), some say that flashing stock with "warranty bit: 1" will do it (I can't fix this bit count because phone wont boot), some say that flashing a stock ROM over a custom ROM will brick it. Of course for each rule there is 20 posts saying they are wrong.
TL;DR
Can I flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738533 over a MOAR install on a phone with a warranty bit : 1 condition?
Thanks in advance,
Omega
PS - Thanks to all the Devs, been lurking here for years and using your work since my first Droid.
The tar in that thread is nd8 kitkat 4.4.2 for touchwiz. Once that tar is flashed you CANNOT downgrade bootloader or modem, you can however flash any rom you desire. Again be sure NOT to downgrade bootloader or modem, because doing so will hard brick your phone.

Yes you can flash this tar via odin. It will restore your phone back to factory settings with 4.4.2 touchwiz.
Thank you for the help and quick response! I am about to flash it now. I did have one more dumb question that I thought other people might not know and find this thread in search: Is the N8 the version of the radio software? The bootloader? What does it represent? When I good a 2 or 3 letter word like that, its useless.
Again thank you so much for the quick help.
Edit: Worked like a damned charm. If I could, I'd buy ya a beer. Thanks again.

ND8 is just the build number by Samsung that they settled on as stable. I've seen am explanation of exactly what the letters and number means but basically I think it's just year, month and day but I don't remember precisely.

[Q] downgrade

hi i have stock rooted gs3 on kitkat and would ike to install goodness rom which i believe is on JB. (MIJJz+Goodness+JB+v10.0.4+MD4)
what do i need to do and what files?
ive tried to flash over but gives me error.so there is no way to do this by myself and i will need instructions.
please help and thanks
Its a fairly simple process. You can flash the ROM you are wanting to but because you are on the KitKat build you must NEVER try to revert to a lower boot loader or modem. Doing so will cause a bricked phone. Meaning you can't ever try to downgrade by flashing a previous stock tar through Odin. What you'll need to do is have a custom recovery. Philz is the recommended recovery for the KitKat build as its been doing the best so far. If you don't already have a custom recovery you can get it by searching 'philz recovery for sprint galaxy s3' (assuming you have sprint of course) you need to get the tar form so you can flash it through Odin. Once you've flashed it I suggest making a backup. After your backup is complete just flash the ROM you desire as instructed in its OP. Best of luck to you

If memory serves me correctly when choosing to install zip there's an option right after you select install zip that says update binary. Unclick that and you should be good to go. Clean to flash new rom-wipe cache-wipe dalvik-install rom-wioe cache-wipe dalvik-reboot system-profit!!
Dont update old binary.I uncheck that and im good? Alright..lets try that now.

try re downloading the rom and putting it on your internal storage when wiping on philiz touch when you click wipe/factory there should be a second option that says full wipe clean/new rom install which i have used to flash other roms on my s3 that should take care of wiping but when flashing i like to put my files in my internal storage to have less errors.........but i'm also new here try what i have said but make sure you have a backup of the working rom
edit: with the infuse since it didn't make it past GB officially when you want a JB rom and are on kk you just odin back to stock then re root add cwm then flash away but as i barely found out with the s3 you can't go back to stock if your on official 4.4.2 cause it will cause brick so if my info above this doesn't help then im sorry
ill just quit.
thanks to 6th_Hokage (ive tried ur instructions and doesnt work either) and droid716 .
its not that important to have that rom anyway.
ill find some kk rom and check it out.

I've been liking the ROM in my signature for the past few weeks. The latest is 4.0 but I'm sticking with 2.2 because 3.x+ take out some features I like, but you can download any of the versions still.

[Q] Time to update ROM with Knox bit tripped, how to avoid a brick

So back in December while updating to the newest version of MOAR, I made this mistake of taking the OTA update and getting Knox. I managed not to brick my phone at the time, but ended up with the Knox bit tripped and a lot of concern that further experimenting would result in a dead phone and a forced replacement. Anyway, fast forward to now and its time to update again (some apps are starting to get unstable because they have been updated but my ROM hasn't), but I want to make sure I don't risk bricking the phone thanks to Knox.
If I remember correctly, the fact that I'd contracted Knox and tripped the bit already meant that I was stuck with the same bootloader, but I could update everything else. Is this still the case, or has someone figured a way around the issue in the past six months so that I can get rid of Knox once and for all? Also, since I haven't looked at any of this in the last 7 months, what exactly would the process be to update to the newest version of MOAR without updating the bootloader (if that's still what needs to happen)?
Thanks
You can downgrade everything but bootloader and modem. You can upgrade everything.
Flashing custom ROMs don't include bootloaders or modems, so have no fear. Only Odining the stock ROM, taking an OTA, or specifically finding a way to flash those upgrade them.
Just flash the latest MOAR or whatever other ROM you want to, as always.
The only exception to this is to flash ND8 (TouchWiz 4.4.2) based ROMs you need to have taken the ND8 OTA or Odined the stock ND8 tar first, otherwise you may brick your phone.
You're welcome!

The only valid arguments against Knox (IMHO) are:
1. Once the warranty counter is tripped there is no way to reset it.
2. You do not have the ability to downgrade modems/bootloaders.
Myself, rode warrior and many others have had no issues directly related to Knox....

The problem is the way in which those issues manifested. Samsung essentially slipped Knox into the update almost without warning and with virtually no documentation. As a result many of those who were affected found out about it as a result of a bricked phone which was now permanently marked as ineligible for warranty work. Had Samsung made it clear what Knox was capable of and provided proper documentation of its function then I don't think many people would have had any problems with it.

I'm in the same boat, I've been trying all day to get this to work. None of the Jelly Bean guides seem to work on 4.4.2. I just tried flashing the SuperSu via the recovery with no luck. Hope someone helps out, my Super keeps giving that message.
I install Philz recovery and root from from there and install supersu work better then cf auto root.
Is any downside by rooting this way?

And there are at least 4-5 rooted TouchWiz 4.4.2 stock-based ROMs including @CNexus' completely stock but rooted in the development (non-original) section.
